Joyce Jean Blue
SYRACUSE - Funeral for Joyce Jean Blue, 65, will be 10 a.m. MDT Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Syracuse. Graveside committal service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.
Mrs. Blue died Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, at Syracuse.
She was born Aug. 25, 1937, at Liberal, the daughter of Henry and Reba Mildred Brown Barnes. She lived a good part of her life in Lakin before moving with her parents as migrant farm workers to California and Oregon and then returned to Lakin where she attended school.
After moving to Syracuse, she worked for many of the local restaurants before starting her 29-year career at First National Bank where she began as a janitor, worked as a teller and eventually became a vice president. For 11 years, she owned and operated MaCaws Café in Syracuse. She also had worked as a cashier at the Colorado Grand Casino in Cripple Creek, Colo., and at the Hamilton County Appraisers Office. She also kept busy with the rental properties she owned.
She enjoyed bowling, crocheting, sewing for her family, and especially enjoyed gambling. She also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, attending their sporting and school activities. She was involved with many community activities.
Survivors include a son, Troy Nairn, Syracuse; three daughters, Lori Nairn, Johnson, Tammy Hayes and Mandy Bennett, both of Syracuse; a sister, Beatrice Ives, Garden City; two grandsons; four granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Bubby Nairn; her parents; and a sister, Nora Ella Hook.
Visitation will be until 7 MDT tonight at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials to the Joyce Blue Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878-1253.
Caleb E. Sutton
Caleb E. Sutton died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc. in Montezuma.
He was born Feb. 15, 1914, near Ensign, the son of Alanzo J. and Rosanna (Ryan) Sutton. A farmer and rancher, he was a lifetime resident of Ensign. He married Gevene Gardner Oct. 21, 1938, in Bucklin. He was a member of the United First Methodist Church in Ensign.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Steven Sutton and Martin Menzor, both of Dodge City; two daughters, Marie Walter, Ellinwood, and Wanda Zortman, LaCrosse; a sister, Katherine Sutton, rural Gray County; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Earl Sutton, Lynn Sutton, Lloyd Sutton, Harold Sutton and Albert Sutton; and foster son, Timothy Sutton.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Montezuma, with the Rev. Gene Eshleman presiding. Burial will be in the Cave Cemetery
near Ensign.
Visitation hours will be noon to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Montezuma Funeral Home.

Vernol Anthony Beckman
The funeral service for Vernol Anthony Beckman, 77, of Petersburg, Neb., was Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002, at St. John the Baptist Church in Petersburg. The Rev. Frank Baumert officiated, with the burial in the parish cemetery. Military rites were conducted by American Legion Post No. 334 of Petersburg.
Mr. Beckman died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at his home.
The son of William and Johanna (Starman) Beckman, he was born Nov. 24, 1924, on his family's farm west of Elgin, Neb.
He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in the Pacific theater during World War II, returning to Nebraska after receiving his discharge.
On Feb. 10, 1948, he married Stella Klein. The couple farmed in the Petersburg and Elgin areas before moving to Petersburg.
In addition to being a member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Mr. Beckman was a member of the American Legion Post No. 334 of Petersburg and Sharkey Ruess VFW Post No. 5816 of Elgin. He also served on the Beaver Valley School Board of District 18 and had served on the Farmers Coop Board.
He is survived by his wife of the home; three daughters, Lois Avalon, Garden City, June Racely, Columbus, Neb., and Karen Meikle, Wakefield, Neb.; five sons, Dale, Roger and Jim Beckman, both of Petersburg, Neb., Paul Beckman of Elgin, Neb., and Tom Beckman of Lincoln, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Mark; a brother, Dick; and two grandsons.
Opal N. Hobbs
Opal N. Hobbs, 88, died Thursday, Aug. 22, 2002, at the Scott City Hospital, Scott City.
She was born April 22, 1914, in Copeland, the daughter of J.V. and Minnie Alcorn Josserand. She was a resident of Scott City since 1940, after moving from Dodge City. She was a sales clerk for many years at J.M. McDonald's Clothing Store in Dodge City. She was also a Girl Scout leader and a member of the First Christian Church, Eastern Star, Christian Women's Fellowship, and the Business Professional Women's Association, all of Scott City.
On June 24, 1933, she married L.C. "Red" Hobbs in Cimarron. He died April 24, 1982.
She is survived by daughters, Shirley Rosas of Tacoma, Wash., and Wanda Chase of Eagle Point, Ore.; a sister, Iris June Vaughan of Prescott, Ariz.; a brother, Glenn Josserand of Shelton, Wash.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Tommy Allen; two brothers, Tom Josserand and John Josserand; and two sisters, Hazel Droll and Pauline Johnson.
The funeral services will be 2 p.m. at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. She will be buried in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City. Visitation was Saturday and Sunday, and 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. today.
Memorials may be given to First Christian Church, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.
Evelyn R. Phillips
She was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Wichita County, the daughter of Lee and Clara L. White Fletcher.
She was a resident of Garden City since 1967, when she moved from Leoti. She had been a beautician at both Norma's Beauty Salon and The Plaza Beauty Shop in Garden City. On Oct. 9, 1941 she married Jack w. Phillips in Fresno, Calif. He died February 1962. She was also a member of the First Southern Baptist Church and the Finney County Senior Center, both in Garden City.
She is survived by three nieces, a nephew, seven great-nieces and nephews and six great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral home in Garden City, with the Rev. Richmond Graham officiating. Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, also at Price & Sons Funeral Home. Interment will take place later at the Beulah Cemetery
in Wichita County.

T. Geary Farr
T. Geary Farr, 55, a former resident of Haskell County, died of heart failure Friday, Aug. 23, 2002, at his home in Bartow, Fla.
He was born July 24, 1947, at Shawnee, Okla., the son of Tommy and Lee Farr.
A Bartow resident for 20 years, moving from Indiana, he was in sales and marketing for Hughes Supplies. He belonged to the First Methodist Church and had been the first Eagle Scout in Haskell County.
He is survived by his wife, Jenny Farr; four daughters, Teresa Howell, Sanford, Fla., Tammy Dozois, Clearwater, Fla., Stacey Gager, San Diego, and Kelly Manning, Lakeland, Fla.; his mother, Checotah, Okla.; two sisters, Sherri Miner, Sublette, and Shelli Farr, Cordova, Tenn.; his mother-in-law; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Whidden-McLean Funeral Home, Bartow, with the Rev. John Holloway officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Burial Park, Lakeland.

Helen M. Coffey
ULYSSES - Helen M. Coffey, 95, of Ulysses, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.
She was born Feb. 11, 1907, at Coffeyville, the daughter of Riley Hess and Lillian Barney Miller.
A Ulysses resident since 1919, she graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1925, attended Kansas State University and received her teaching certificate. She taught school in rural Grant County and at Holcomb.
Mrs. Coffey was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Music Club and the Writers Guild, all at Ulysses. A homemaker, she was also an artist, poet, musician and composer.
On Aug. 15, 1935, she married Dr. George McDowell Coffey at Ulysses. He died Jan. 1, 1969. She was also preceded in death by a son, George M. Coffey Jr.; a daughter, Carolyn L. Coffey; a brother; and a sister.
Survivors include three sons, Richard H. Coffey, Ulysses, Roger D. Coffey of Lawrence and Douglas G. Coffey, Waxahachie, Texas; a sister, Frances Wilkes, Hays; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Western Prairie Care Home, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
Rich Allison
Rich Allison, 66, of Pratt, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at Friendship Manor in Pratt.
Born at Cimarron on Sept. 1, 1935, he was the son of Earl B. and Eva L. Sultz Allison.
A Pratt resident for 38 years, Mr. Allison was a drywall contractor. He belonged to Our Savior Lutheran Church at Pratt and was a U.S. Army veteran.
On June 14, 1958, he married Jeanette M. Schindler at Natrona. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Mike Allison, Pratt, and Todd Allison, Belvidere; his mother, Eva Allison Frack, Cimarron; two sisters, LaRue Horton, Deerfield, and Mary Ellen Woods, Garden City; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Monday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Pratt, with the Rev. Michael Schotte officiating. Inurnment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Pratt.
