Mary K. Chamberlain

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Mary K. Chamberlain, 82, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Community Christian Church, Scott City, with the Revs. Jeff Arnold and Don Williams officiating.

Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Chamberlain died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born Nov. 22, 1919, at Conway Springs, the daughter of Charles Wesley and Mary Esther Davis Flood.

A lifetime resident of Scott County and Scott City, she was a librarian at the Scott County Library for 12 years before her retirement in 1985.

She was a member of Community Christian Church, So 'n' Sew Club, High Plains Study Club and the Bridge Club, all at Scott City.

On Sept. 6, 1975, she married Ray Chamberlain at Scott City.

He survives.

She also is survived by a son, Ashley Luke, Scott City; three daughters, Linda Pfenninger and Diane O'Neal, both of Hutchinson, and Jessie Randtke, Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, John Wesley Luke; and a brother, Charles W. Flood Jr.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Memorials are suggested to the Future Children's Room at the Scott County Library, in care of the funeral home.

Joan Lois Bowers

Funeral for Joan Lois Bowers, 65, of Marion, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marion, with the Rev. John A. Ryding officiating. Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.

Mrs. Bowers died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Marion Manor.

She was born Dec. 12, 1936, at Tampa, the daughter of Henry and Olinda Brunner Klein.

On Nov. 13, 1955, she married Harold Lee Bowers Jr. at Marion.

He died in 1975.

Mrs. Bowers worked as the Marion City Clerk for 20 years, was the manager of the Marion Senior Center, and belonged to the VFW Auxiliary, Dorcas and the Neo-Century Club.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Lee and Jock Henry Bowers, both of McPherson; a daughter, Susan Denise Soldner, Garden City; three sisters, Arlene Bowers and Kathleen Goentzel, both of Marion, and Henrietta Chestnut of Marquette; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her mother, of Marion.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion.

The casket will be open at the funeral home, but closed at the funeral.

Memorials are suggested to the Marion City Library, in care of the funeral home.

Maxine Osborn Jarvis

Maxine Osborn Jarvis, 84, a former Garden City resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, in Gravette, Ark.

She was born Nov. 15, 1917, at Santa Fe, the daughter of Ray and Lenora Osborn. She attended Garden City schools.

On Jan. 8, 1935, she married Clarence Jarvis at Ulysses.

They moved to Sulphur Springs, Ark., in 1950.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Jim of Gravette and Kenny of Southwest City, Mo.; two brothers, Gene Osborn, San Clemente, Calif., and Ray Osborn, Pensacola Beach, Fla.; a sister, Winifred Koksal, Garden City; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and one sister.

The funeral was Friday in Gravette.

Dilan James Geier

Vigil service for Dilan James Geier, 26, will be 8 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City.

Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Geier died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, in Pueblo, Colo.

He was born Nov. 16, 1975, at Garden City, the son of Duane S. Geier and Linda Sue Austin Starr.

A lifetime resident of Garden City, he attended St. Mary Catholic School in his early years and graduated from Garden City High School in 1994.

He worked for J.A.G. Construction of Garden City.

In his spare time, he worked as a welder and enjoyed working as an auto mechanic.

His special interests included riding his motorcycle, playing pool, restoring old cars and, most of all, spending time with his friends and family.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

He is survived by his fiancé, Norma Santoyo, Garden City; his parents, both of Garden City; a daughter, Devana Geier, Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Lacy Page, Athens, Ga., and Samantha Geier, Garden City; and his grandparents, Alex Geier, Yuma, Ariz., and Rosa L. Geier, Garden City.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, James Austin.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.

Memorials to the Dilan J. Geier Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

William D. Harman

William Dennis Harman, 73, of Folsom, Calif., died Friday, July 26, 2002.

He was born Nov. 12, 1928, at Garden City, the son of Ovid D. and Lois Stringfield Harman.

He graduated from Garden City High School in 1946, earned a degree at Pittsburg State University and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1951, serving in the Korean War.

After the service, he settled in California and worked as a technical editor for General Electric Nuclear Division in San Jose for 21 years.

He was employed as an editor for Aerojet in Folsom for more than eight years before retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the Pinebrook Singers and 49er SIRS.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dolores; his children, Susan Borghi, Gold River, Calif., Laura Erwin, South Carolina, and Tom Harman, San Jose; his sister, Connie Foster, Garden City; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Don Solari.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl Harman.

A memorial service was July 29 in Folsom.

Iva F. Hoffman

HOLCOMB - Funeral for Iva F. Hoffman, 60, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Hoffman died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 25, 1941, at Leoti, the daughter of Ray and Bertha A. Moore Morris.

She grew up and attended schools in Leoti, Scott City and Sublette.

A Holcomb resident, she was a homemaker and had worked for B & B Printing in Scott City for eight years.

She was a member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary Post No. 2279.

Her special interests included collecting Beanie Babies, stuffed animals, gardening, her biblical plate collection and taking care of her dogs.

On Aug. 16, 1958, she married T.C. Hoffman at Garden City. He survives.

She also is survived by a sister, Betty Smith, Scott City; a half brother, Jimmy, and two half sisters, Leona Ray and Leah, all of Washington state; her mother-in-law, M.T. Wheeler, Garden City; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leonard Morris; and a sister, Rethal L. Quezada.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or the Kidney Foundation, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Evelyn Thersia Schlegel

Funeral for Evelyn Thersia Schlegel, 70, Ness City, was to be 10:30 this morning at Sacred Heart Church, Ness City, with the Rev. Gregory LeBlanc officiating, followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Ness City.

Parish vigil was to be 7 p.m. Sunday.

Mrs. Schlegel died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at her home in Ness City.

She was born Aug. 19, 1931, at her parents' home northeast of Ness City, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Rabenseifener Langer.

A lifetime resident of Ness County, she was a homemaker.

She belonged to Sacred Heart Church, Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary Frank Stull Post No. 152 and the Ness County Historical Society, all at Ness City.

On May 26, 1953, she married Walter Schlegel at Ness City.

He died Jan. 13, 1981. She also was preceded in death by three brothers, Leonard, Adolph and Alvin Langer; and a sister, Marie McDonald.

Survivors include a son, Doug Schlegel, Ness City; two daughters, Lynette Grumbein of Alexander and Bonnie Guevara, Garden City; a brother, Edwin Langer, Ness City; two sisters, Anna Wellert, Ness City, and Helen Koestner, Hoisington; and eight grandsons.

Memorials are suggested to the Ness County Historical Society, in care of Fitzgerald Funeral Home Inc., Box 96, Ness City, KS 67560.

Jean S. Olson

Memorial service for Jean S. Olson, 82, of Manhattan, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Manhattan, with the Rev. R. Kenneth Wills officiating.

Private family burial will be in Sunrise Cemetery.

Mrs. Olson died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Hospital, Wichita.

She was born Nov. 8, 1919, at Grenora, N.D., the daughter of Alfred P. and Elsie Dalton Schumacher.

She graduated from North Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree in social work.

A Manhattan resident since 1947, she had been a social worker on the Indian Reservations.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was involved in many community and youth activities including Girl Scouts, MYF, AAUW, Social Club and various bridge clubs.

She enjoyed gardening, needlework, arrowhead hunting, traveling and camping with her family.

On May 25, 1943, she married Raymond V. Olson at Bismarck, N.D. He died March 14, 1985.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marion; and a brother, Peter.

She is survived by a son, Peter Olson, Garden City; two daughters, Nancy Nuttelman, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Susan Metzler, Pitkin, Colo.; two brothers, Charles Schumacher, South Carolina, and Max Schumacher, Great Falls, Mont.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are 7 to 8:30 tonight at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, Manhattan.

Memorials are suggested to the Jean S. Olson Scholarship Fund to be used to assist students at Kansas State University and North Dakota State University, and may be sent in care of the funeral home, 1616 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.
