Pelma 'Pam' Gunderson

Funeral for Pelma Jean "Pam" Gunderson, 40, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Charles West officiating.

Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

She died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at her home in Garden City.

Born Nov. 29, 1961, at Clovis, N.M., she was the daughter of Noble J. Sr. and Dixie L. Davis Glover.

She grew up in Clovis and graduated from high school there.

A homemaker, she moved to Garden City in 1986, to Guymon, Okla., in 1995, and returned to Garden City in 2000.

Her special interests included dancing, her grandchildren, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by three children, Billy Glover and Brock Scroggin, both of Garden City, and Shasta Powell, Amarillo, Texas; three sisters, Minnie White and Christina Pickard, both of Garden City, and Rendell Symes, Grand Island, Neb.; three brothers, Noble Glover, John Pickard and Randy Pickard, all of Garden City; her companion, Steve Rothpuss, Garden City; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Charles Harrison Glover III; and a niece.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials to the Pelma J. Gunderson Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Thomas Luther Gorley

Thomas Luther Gorley, 61, of Melrose, N.M., died Wednesday, July 31, 2002, in a grain elevator accident in Melrose.

He was born Dec. 17, 1940, at Price, Utah, the son of Francis Walter and Doris Lucretia Glasscock Gorley.

He spent his youth in various towns throughout the Northwest.

As a teen-ager, he broke his back in a logging accident, but overcame the injury and learned to walk again.

He graduated from high school in Idaho and attended Clovis (N.M.) Community College.

He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1959 and served in Michigan, England, North Dakota, Thailand and New Mexico before retiring in 1979 as a master sergeant. He settled in Clovis, N.M., where he remodeled and built a number of homes.

He worked for Tri-State Industries and at Copies and More, was part owner of a truck stop, owned Tommy's Auto Sales, drove a school bus and was a farmer in the Melrose area.

At the time of his death, he was employed by Melrose Grain and Elevator Co.

Mr. Gorley was a member of the Cannon Air Force Base Catholic parish, where he was active in the RCIA program for 10 years, as well as a Eucharistic minister and lector.

He also taught in the Catholic religious education program.

He served as chaplain of the Army National Guard unit in Portales, N.M., for several years, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clovis, and a lifetime member of VFW Chapter No. 3280.

He loved to travel and enjoyed spending time with his large family.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marlene Loretta Miller Gorley; four daughters, Jane Alford, Fort Mill, S.C., Jeanette Horry, Bosque Farms, N.M., Joanne Rink, Garden City, and Jennifer Gorley, Clovis; five sons, John Gorley, Eliasville, Texas, Joe Gorley of Newton, Jesse, Jerry and Jeffrey Gorley, all of Lubbock, Texas; his mother, Boise, Idaho; seven sisters, Mary Randall, Clarkston, Wash., Doris Telleria, Alice Triplett and Virginia Beall, all of Boise, Cora Holmes, Unalaska, Alaska, Kathy Shelton, Casa Grande, Ariz., and Mable Beatty, Spring Creek, Nev.; three brothers, Dave Gorley, Jordan Valley, Ore., Joe Gorley, Ione, Idaho, and Jim Gorley, Deatsville, Ala.; 16 grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Ben Gorley.

A rosary prayer service is planned for 7 p.m. Sunday at The Chapel, 1500 Thornton in Clovis.

Funeral Mass will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Cannon AFB Chapel, Clovis, with the Rev. Steven Brosk officiating.

Burial will be in Melrose Cemetery with full military honors conducted.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Holy Family Services Birth Center, Route 4, Box 257, Weslaco, TX 78596.

Muffley Funeral Home, Clovis, is in charge of arrangements.

Clarence Henry Wheeler

HUGOTON - Clarence Henry Wheeler, 93, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

He was born Feb. 4, 1909, in Stevens County, the son of Horace and Viola Smith Wheeler.

He attended Haviland Grade School and Goodluck School in rural Hugoton.

A longtime resident of Stevens County, he was a farmer.

He belonged to Bethel Friends Church in Hugoton where he was the treasurer for many years.

He was also on the board of directors of Friends University.

On Aug. 9, 1931, he married Ruth Ellis at Dermott.

She died July 6, 2002.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leslie and Harold; and a sister, Gertrude Bushwieler.

Survivors include two sons, Lewis and Lee Wheeler, both of Hugoton; a brother, Floyd Wheeler, Pratt; a sister, Myrtle Kinser, Haviland; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethel Friends Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Eric Mason officiating.

Burial will follow at Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, Liberal, and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the church where the family will be present to greet friends.

Memorials are suggested to the Bethel Friends Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home, 1212 W. Second, Liberal, KS 67901.

A. Bonnie Myrick

SCOTT CITY - A. Bonnie Myrick, 83, a Scott City resident before moving to Lawrence, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 31, 1919, at Hooker, Okla., the daughter of Fred W. and Ulva Bell Chrispens.

A homemaker, she had been a Lawrence resident since 1970, moving from Scott City.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Scott City, and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, fishing, camping and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

On May 2, 1939, she married Phillip Myrick at Guymon, Okla. He died Dec. 20, 1989.

She is survived by two sons, Phillip Keith Myrick of Lawrence and Ron Myrick of Ponca City, Okla.; two daughters, Sharon Patton of Lawrence and Janice Richardson of Bailey, Colo.; a brother-in-law; two sisters-in-law; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel, Liberal, with the Rev. David Bagwell officiating.

Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Roger Lynn Bergsma

SYRACUSE - Roger Lynn Bergsma, 54, of Syracuse, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

He was born July 31, 1948, at Goodland, the son of Lloyd and Marjorie Jean Newton Bergsma.

After graduating from high school in Fort Worth, Texas, he attended Texas Tech University where he majored in business.

In 1971, he moved to Goodland and worked for First National Bank. Since 1984, he had resided in Syracuse, serving as president of First National Bank.

Mr. Bergsma was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Kansas Bankers Association, where he served as past chairman of the Benefits Committee and Federal Affairs Committee.

He belonged to the Masonic Lodge, was a member and past president of the Syracuse Rotarians, and was a former member of the Hamilton County Hospital Board and the Goodland Chamber of Commerce.

He enjoyed reading and all sports, and had bicycled across Kansas twice.

On March 10, 1990, he married Jeannine Kay Sullivan at Syracuse.

She survives.

He also is survived by his father, Amarillo, Texas; two sons, Bradly Bergsma, Goodland, and Matthew Kuhlman, Syracuse; a daughter, Amy Jo Bergsma, Olathe; a brother, Mike Bergsma, Corpus Christi, Texas; a niece; an uncle; and an aunt.

His mother died in 1982.

He also was preceded in death by an aunt.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at Barney Akers Gymnasium, Syracuse, with the Rev. Neil Blair officiating.

Following the service, all family and friends are invited to lunch at the new Syracuse High School cafeteria at 502 N. Main St.

Graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. MDT Saturday at Goodland Cemetery.

Family and friends may sign the register book and see the memory table from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MDT today and Friday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse.

Memorials are suggested to Goodland Hustlers Basketball or Syracuse Bulldogs Baseball, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Lewis H. Yakel

LAKIN - Funeral for Lewis H. Yakel, 75, will be 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Lakin with the Rev. David Bolz officiating.

Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard and Masonic graveside rites conducted by Emerald Lodge No. 289 of Lakin.

Mr. Yakel died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born Nov. 21, 1926, in northern Kearny County, the son of Fred and Edith Margret Stitt Yakel.

A lifetime Kearny County and Lakin resident, he attended Harmony Hill and Columbia country schools.

He served in the U.S. Army from February 1946 to September 1947 before returning to Kearny County where he worked as a custom cutter and truck driver.

He was co-owner/operator of Yakel Brothers Trucking for many years, and also worked for the past several years with Bless Trucking and Golden Grain.

He enjoyed his work in harvesting and truck driving, working with kids and mechanics.

Mr. Yakel was a member of Masonic Blue Lodge No. 289 at Lakin, Midian Shrine at Wichita, West Santa Fe Trail Shrine Club at Lakin and the Wichita Consistory Scottish Rite.

In 1954, he married Dorothy Williams at Clayton, N.M.

She died in 1966.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Yvonne Yakel; two brothers, Merle and Melvin Yakel; and three sisters, Ruby Yakel, Alice Yakel and Ruth Yakel.

In 1967, he married Donna Douglas at Lakin.

He married Dee Edwards on Feb. 29, 1984, at Clayton.

She survives.

He also is survived by a son, Rick Yakel, Lakin; four brothers, Marvin Yakel, Independence, Mo., Raymond Yakel, Lakin, Wayne Yakel, Eldorado Springs, Mo., and Dean Yakel, Fort Scott; four sisters, Freda Scott, Garden City, Helen Hayzlett and Carmen Hayzlett, both of Lakin, and Carol Yakel, Eldorado Springs; and several stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospital, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Aloys A. 'Ollie' Kisel

LAKIN - Vigil service and rosary for Aloys A. "Ollie" Kisel, 84, will be 7 p.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms officiating.

Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mr. Kisel died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born July 30, 1918, at St. Vincent, Ark., the son of Peter Paul and Caroline Gottsponer Kisel.

He grew up in St. Vincent and attended schools there.

In 1936, he moved to Lakin and worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for a short time.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later moved to Pueblo, Colo., where he worked at C.F.&I. Steel Mill.

He later returned to Lakin, where he worked as a compressor operator and repairman for Colorado Interstate Gas Co.

In 1979, he moved to Wamsetter, Wyo., where he worked as a station superintendent for C.I.G.

He retired in 1983 and returned to Lakin.

Mr. Kisel was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church of Lakin, was a third degree Knights of Columbus, a lifetime member of Sportsman Lake and belonged to the Colorado Interstate Gas Retirement Association. He enjoyed playing cards and traveling.

On Oct. 18, 1941, he married Mary Zakrysek at Canon City, Colo. She died Oct. 8, 1988.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Barbara DeMain; a brother, Carl "Doc" Kisel; and three sisters, Margaret Miller, Rose Cochran and Caroline Hughs.

On Nov. 25, 1989, he married Thelma Stinchcomb at Lakin.

She survives.

He also is survived by a son, Jim Kisel, South Bend, Ind.; a daughter, Carol Grauberger, Lakin; two brothers, Chris Kisel, Hot Springs, Ark., and Joe Kisel, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Marie Fahey, Pueblo, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Memorials are suggested to St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Lakin Pride Committee or the American Cancer Society, all in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
