Jose Penado Orellana

Vigil service for Jose Penado Orellana, 32, of Garden City, will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, officiated by the Rev. Carlos Garcia-Pena, S.J. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Orellana died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Haskell County.

Born Oct. 30, 1969, in El Salvador, he was the son of Ramon and Elena Orellana Penado.

He moved from El Salvador to Los Angeles in 1988. He and Silvia Rojas were married on Feb. 9, 1996, at Huntington Park, Calif. They moved from Los Angeles to Garden City in 1998. A truck driver, he worked for K & L Tank Truck Inc.

Mr. Orellana attended St. Mary Catholic Church. His hobbies included listening to music, working on the computer and spending time with his children and wife.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jose Luis Orellana, and two daughters, Luisa Fernanda Orellana and Samantha Giselle Orellana, all of the home; and his parents, three half brothers and one sister, all of El Salvador.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Jose Orellana Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

William 'Ed' Haller

Funeral for William Edwin "Ed" Haller, 73, of Garden City, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Steuhrenberg officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday in Larned Cemetery, Larned.

Mr. Haller died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at his home.

He was born Feb. 23, 1929, at Hoisington, the son of William Nast and Grace Jessop Haller.

A Garden City resident since 1970, moving from Wichita, he was a retired switchman for Southwestern Bell Telephone. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he was an elder and held numerous offices. He also belonged to Telephone Pioneer of America, was a former Boy Scout leader, served in the U.S. Navy Reserve and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking.

On July 17, 1949, he married Louise M. Hemken at Albert. She survives. He also is survived by two daughters, Janis L. Schaffer and Jean L. Morlang, both of Garden City; a sister, Blanche Button, LaCrosse; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Gruver and Edna Haller.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or Sunshine Nursing Agency, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Cynthia 'Dianne' Hill

LAKIN - Funeral for Cynthia "Dianne" Hill, 48, of Lakin, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wesleyan Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Steve Sparks officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mrs. Hill died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at Holcomb.

She was born Aug. 18, 1954, at Waynesville, N.C., the daughter of David Lee and Betty Jones West. The family moved to Garden City when she was 5, and she attended Garden City schools. After graduating from Garden City High School in 1972, she moved to Lakin.

Mrs. Hill was a member of the Wesleyan Church and the Wesleyan Women, and helped with Vacation Bible School and taught Sunday School classes at the church. A homemaker, she enjoyed her church activities, arts and crafts, painting and spending time with children, especially her grandson.

On Sept. 28, 1974, she married Tom Hill at Garden City. He survives. She also is survived by two sons, Christopher Thomas Hill and Cody Hill, both of the home; a daughter, Alesha Suzanne Hill, Lakin; her mother, Betty Crusch, Clyde, N.C.; a brother, David West, Denver; a sister, Susan Zimmerman, Holcomb; and a grandson. She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the Education Fund for Cody Hill, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

LeRoy C. Higgins

Funeral for LeRoy C. Higgins, 82, of Rolla, was to be 10 this morning at Rolla United Methodist Church, with burial following in Rolla Cemetery. Military graveside rites were to be conducted by the Stevens County Vets Group.

Mr. Higgins died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born March 4, 1920, in Morton County, the son of Clarence and Lily Johnson Higgins. He graduated from high school in Rolla. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he farmed for a short while. He was a retired postmaster of the U.S. Post Office in Rolla, serving from 1949 to 1981.

A lifetime resident of Rolla, Mr. Higgins was a member of First Baptist Church of Rolla and the Elkhart Point Rock Campers Club, a former member of the Elkhart/Rolla Lions Club, and attended Emmanuel Baptist Church of Rolla. His special interests included collecting barbed wire, stamps, coins and arrowheads. He also enjoyed gardening, going to local auctions, having coffee with his friends and telling jokes. He was an avid camper.

On April 3, 1947, he married Norma Lakin at Hugoton. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Royce and Terry Higgins, both of Rawlins, Wyo., and Alan Higgins, Hugoton; two daughters, Judy Williams, Arvada, Colo., and Tina Higgins, Tulsa, Okla.; three brothers, Bill and Eugene Higgins, both of Elkhart, and Jack Higgins, Rolla; five sisters, Opal Erickson, Portland, Ore., Isabel Perry and Jewell Burrows, both of Hugoton, Lola Chambers, Valley Falls, and Dorothy Milburn, Rolla; 10 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Violet Galligher; and a brother, Ernest Higgins.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the donor's choice, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 428 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Louise B. Walker

Louis B. Walker, 77, of Ingalls, died Thursday, Sept. 12, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born Dec. 22, 1924, on the family farm southwest of Pierceville, the son of Tennant Byron and Mary Horton Walker. A lifetime Ingalls resident, he was a Rancher.

He was a member of the Saddle and Rodeo Clubs in both Cimarron and Lakin.

In 1962, he married his wife, Trudy, at Ashland. She died May 24, 1997.

He is survived by one step-son, Walker Daver, Tulsa, Okla.; one step-daughter, Lillian Graham, Tulsa; three sisters, Nannie Biship, Pratt, Irene Woodrow, Lakin, and Stella Eichenauer, Garden City.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; four brothers, Albert William, James Andrew, Willard and Lee Walker; and two sisters, Lizie Davis and Nellie Bornaman.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Cimarron Cemetery, Cimarron, with Rev. Dick Robbins presiding. Friends may call from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Burkhart-Ziegler's Gray County Funeral Chapel in Cimarron.

The family suggests memorials to the Gray County EMS in care of Burkhart-Ziegler's Gray County Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 786, Cimarron.

Martha Frances Batman Williams

Martha Frances Batman Williams, 96, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, in Garden City.

She was born May 10, 1906 in Dallas, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Carrie Willis Brown.

She married Ralph E. Batman Sept. 22, 1926, in St. John. He died Dec. 22, 1965. She married Sidney Williams July 27, 1969, in Great Bend. He died May 14, 1992. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Great Bend.

She is survived by three sons, Ralph E. Batman, Great Bend, Charles L. Batman, and Otis, Elmo E. Batman, Kansas City, Kan.; a daughter, LaWanda Mac Farrell, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a sister, Elsie McGee, Orange, Calif.; two stepsons, Cherril Williams and Chesley Williams, both of Norwalk, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Opal Crabtree, Norwalk, Calif., and Ina Mae Wentzel, Omaha; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; one daughter, Frieda Ilene Orr; two brothers, Leland Brown and Howard Brown; and one sister, Ida Mae Stone.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Great Bend, with the Rev. Mark Pennington officiating.

Visitation hours will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Bryant Funeral Home in Great Bend.

Memorials may be given to First Church of the Nazarene in care of Bryant funeral Home, 1425 Patton Road, Great Bend 67530.

Marilyn Marlene Neiswender

Marilyn Marlene Neiswender, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at her residence in Topeka.

She was born April 14, 1931, in Havensville, the daughter of Claude C. and Edna (Roberson) Reed.

She moved to Topeka in 1937 and graduated from Topeka High School in 1949. She worked for Pelletiers Office, Jane Lee Store, Hallmark, National Reserve Life Insurance Co. and Goodyear Rubber Co. before retiring in 1986.

She was later a secretary for the Topeka Moose Lodge No. 555 form 1987 to 1991. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge No. 1091, American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 1 and Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post No. 1650.

On June 4, 1949, she married Duane A. Neiswender in Topeka.

She is survived by her husband, Topeka; two daughters, Cynthia A. Slocum, Lawrence, and Patricia Mohoney, Meriden; two sons, Michael D. Neiswender, Benton, and David K. Neiswender, Topeka; a brother, Myron M. Reed, Belleville; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Sherrilyn S. Neiswender and Linda K. Neiswender; and a granddaughter, Whitney Paige Mohoney.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Grantville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery in Topeka.

Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka.

Memorials may be given to Grantville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 164, Grantville, KS 66429; Midland Hospice House, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606-2800; or the Moose Lodge No. 555, 1901 N. Kansas Ave., Topeka.

Edmond A. Berndt

Edmond A. Berndt, 86, died in Halsey Hall at the Kansas Soldiers Home in Fort Dodge Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002.

He was born June 3, 1916, in Herndon, the son of Albert E. and Suzanna Gachel.

He was a resident of Scott City from 1953 until his March 2001 move to Fort Dodge. He married Arlene I. Gfeller March 8, 1939, in Colby. She preceded him in death Oct. 31, 1994. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and a retired automotive technician for Helmer's Motors after 25 years.

He is survived by a son, Gary Berndt, upper Arlington, Ohio; a daughter, Carolyn Manke, Bucklin; two grandsons, Dale Manke and Kurt Manke, Bucklin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one son, Derald Berndt; two brothers, an infant and Walter Berndt; and two sisters, Hannah Berndt and Marie Berndt.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City, with the Rev. John Riebhoff officiating. Interment will be at Scott County Cemetery.

Visitation times are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.

Memorials may be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Lutheran Hour in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 401 S. Washington St., Scott City, KS 67871.
