Velma E. Daniels

SYRACUSE - Velma Eulaile Molz Daniels, 91, a longtime resident of Hamilton County, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at the Alterra Sterling House in Salina.

She was born Aug. 19, 1911, on the family ranch in Stanton County, the daughter of Christian N. and Myrtle J. Carter Molz. She attended Stanton County schools.

On Oct. 22, 1930, she married Leslie L. Daniels at Dodge City. They owned and operated Daniels Complete Service, a mechanical and service station, from 1940 until 1970, where she did bookkeeping. They also had the Sears and Montgomery Wards Catalog Store for a number of years.

Mrs. Daniels was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Syracuse and was involved with the Methodist Women Auxiliary and sponsoring the youth. She was Past Worthy Matron for Order of the Eastern Star, Past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge, Grand Cross of Colors Rainbow Girls, and belonged to Business Professional Women's Club, Wesleyan Service Guild and Social Order of the Beauceant No. 170 of Garden City.

She had been a resident of Hamilton County for 67 years before moving to Salina to be near her family.

Her husband died in 1976. She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Dolph, Ralph, Harold and Kenneth Molz; an infant brother; and three sisters, Matilda Gum, Minnie Helmle and Christine Boltz.

She is survived by a son, Gene Daniels, Salina; a daughter, Genevieve Brown, Downey, Calif.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel officiating. Graveside service will follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. MST Wednesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Alterra Sterling House or the First United Methodist Church of Syracuse,, both in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Mary Bess La Rosh

SYRACUSE - Mary Bess La Rosh, 90, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Hamilton County Extended Care Home in Syracuse.

Born April 15, 1912, at Syracuse, she was the daughter of Harry Elmer and Martha Lucile Ward Walter.

She attended Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., where she continued her love of tap and ballet. She later taught dancing in Syracuse and Denver.

A lifetime Syracuse resident, she was a homemaker. She worked in the local dry goods store, the Hamilton County Library and the Presbyterian Church Library. She sang in the church choir, enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, canning and visits from her family, and later spent time studying art with Yvonne Lewis. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa at Cottey College and belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in Syracuse.

On Aug. 30, 1936, she married Leslie N. La Rosh at Syracuse. He died March 2, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Eleanor Walter, Virginia Daugherty, Orrilla Thompson and Harriet Trimble.

She is survived by a sister, Martha Le Bow, Santa Fe, N.M.; a niece and caregiver, Melissa Hartshorn, Syracuse; and several other nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service is scheduled for later. Memorials are suggested to Hamilton County Library, in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Tony R. Arnold

Johnson - Tony R. Arnold, 18, of Johnson, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Johnson.

He was born Sept. 16, 1984, at Johnson, the son of Steve and Kathleen Bergkamp Arnold.

A senior at Stanton County High School in Johnson, he was the senior class president, participated in cross country and the Scholars Bowl for four years, the golf team for two years, and track and HALO for one year, was on the Outstanding Student List, and was the SCHS light and sound coordinator for all activities.

Tony was a member of Sunflower 4-H Club and the Kansas 4-H Aerospace Action Experience Team and participated in Space Camps. He belonged to Boy Scout Troop No. 145, obtained a Life Scout Rank, was a Senior Patrol Leader and was voted by his peers as Order of the Arrow.

He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Travis and Andy Arnold, and a sister, Tracy Arnold, all of Johnson; his grandparents, Wilfred and Anna Bergkamp of Colwich, and Earl and Judy Arnold of Johnson; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Rosary will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Stanton County High School Auditorium, Johnson, with the Revs. Louis Hoang and Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Steve Arnold Family Medical Fund, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

Billie 'Bill' Mansfield Sr.

Graveside service for former Concordia resident Billie E. "Bill" Mansfield Sr., 76, of Crawford, Colo., will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Concordia, with the Rev. Rex Whitney officiating.

Mr. Mansfield died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, at Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta, Colo.

He was born April 13, 1926, at Concordia, the son of Sidney L. and Grace M. Swearingen Mansfield. He grew up in Concordia, graduating from Concordia High School.

On Oct. 18, 1946, he married Betty J. Graham at Goodland. They lived in Glendale, Ariz., before moving to Crawford in 1971. He enjoyed raising chinchillas, repairing various items and traveling with his wife in their motor home. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ronald D. Mansfield, Sneads, Fla., and Billie E. Mansfield Jr., Crawford; a daughter, Laura L. Reiss, Garden City; a brother, Melvin Mansfield, Concordia; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Phyllis Crawford and Beverly Pierce; two brothers, Austin and Lloyd Mansfield; two stillborn brothers; and a sister, Hazel Johnson.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and until service time Friday at Chaput-Buoy Funeral Chapel, Concordia. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of the funeral home, Box 606, Concordia, KS 66901.

Edith A. McClure

Edith A. McClure, 81, of Dodge City, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City.

She was born Feb. 1, 1921, at Deerfield, the daughter of Beadles Nathan and Daisy Dee Lundy Rector, and grew up in the Deerfield area.

On April 4, 1938, she married Charles E. McClure at Syracuse. They lived on the home place near Sublette until moving to a farm north of Montezuma in 1939. Since 1944, they had lived on a farm west of Dodge City.

A homemaker, Mrs. McClure was a member of First Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, Arbor Day Foundation and Senior Friends, all at Dodge City.

Her husband died Jan. 24, 1964.

She is survived by four sons, Don McClure, Dodge City, Larry McClure, Wesley Chapel, Fla., Dale McClure, Lincoln, Neb., and Doyle McClure, Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, Bernard Rector, Garden City, and Blake Rector, Wamego; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City, with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Senior Friends or Hospice of the Prairie, both in care of the funeral home.

Alice Reifschneider

SCOTT CITY - Graveside service for Alice Elizabeth Emma Reifschneider, 89, a longtime Scott County resident, will be 3 p.m. Friday in Dighton Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating.

Mrs. Reifschneider died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Wichita.

She was born April 1, 1913, at Amy, the daughter of Henry and Dorothy Schierenbeck Ehmke.

A retired farmer, she had lived in Scott County until moving to Wichita in 1998 to be with her son. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City.

On June 9, 1939, she married Edward A. Reifschneider at Garden City. He died May 16, 1987, at Colorado Springs, Colo. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, August W. and Herman Ehmke.

She is survived by her son, Rex D. Reifschneider, Wichita; a daughter-in-law; a grandson; a granddaughter; a grandson-in-law; a great-grandson; and four great-granddaughters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, both in care of the funeral home.

Ramon R. Kitson

ULYSSES - Ramon R. Kitson, 74, of Ulysses, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

He was born Nov. 21, 1927, at Turon, to Ewing F. and Delia Beaushaw Kitson, the youngest of nine children. He attended school in Turon and graduated from high school in Stafford.

Mr. Kitson was employed by Stanolind Oil & Gas Co., and later at British Petroleum at Ulysses in the Stano Gas Plant from 1953 until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Ulysses, was active in the Citizens Band Radio and React Club, was a former member of Southwest Wheatbelt Coachmen Club and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

On Feb. 11, 1951, he married Maxine Cromer at St. John. They moved from Hoisington to Ulysses in 1953.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Larry Ray Kitson, Durango, Colo., and Kevin Lynn Kitson, Woodland Park, Colo.; a brother, Manuel O. Kitson, Penrose, Colo.; a sister, Berniece Edwards, Granite Falls, Wash.; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, John J., Eugene, H.F. and E.L. Kitson; and two sisters, Mary Jordan and Lucille Brown.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Dennis Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 6 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Carroll V. 'Bood' Barnes

ULYSSES - Carroll Vincent "Bood" Barnes, 90, died Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2002, in Ulysses.

He was born Dec. 5, 1911, the third son of Ross and Mabel Leirer Barnes.

During World War II, he served as a gunner's mate aboard several merchant ships. He served in the U.S. Navy for 3 1/2 years during the war.

Throughout his life, Mr. Barnes had various occupations, including farming. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he was an elder and served in church leadership on several occasions.

He is survived by Margaret, his wife of 40 years; his children, Larry Barnes, Selah, Wash., Jerry Barnes, Highland, Calif., David Barnes, Woodward, Okla., Douglas Barnes, Bridgeport, Texas, and Sharon Wood, Saratoga Springs, Utah; his brother, Oscar, Ulysses; 30 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Ulysses. Elders Albert Wood and Eric Follis will officiate. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 6 to 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses.
