Melvin D. Teeter

ULYSSES - Funeral for Melvin D. Teeter, 78, of Ulysses, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Revs. Dennis H. Livingston and Kenneth Lampp officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Teeter died Tuesday, Oct. 8 , 2002, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born Aug. 14, 1924, in southeast Grant County, the son of John Wesley and Mary Hannah Fields Teeter. He graduated from Moscow High School in 1942.

A lifetime resident of Grant County, he was a farmer and rancher. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses, was a former member of the Moscow Lions Club, and enjoyed woodworking, working cattle and spending time with his family.

On Jan. 20, 1945, he married Katie Campbell at Hugoton. She survives. He also is survived by four sons, Earl, Kenneth and Darrell Teeter, all of Ulysses, and Monty Teeter, Johnson; three sisters, Dorothy Nichols, Flagler, Colo., Doris Dye, Rolla, and Margaret Parks, Eureka; three sisters-in-law, Myrtle Teeter of Johnson, Beryl Teeter, Moscow, and Betty Teeter, Ulysses; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Harry, Ross and Ralph Teeter; and one great-granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses or Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Margaret June Palen

SCOTT CITY - Vigil prayer service for Margaret June Palen, 60, will be 7:30 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. David Kraus officiating. Burial will be in Healy Cemetery, Healy.

Mrs. Palen died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at her home in Scott City.

She was born April 16, 1942, at Healy, the daughter of Raymond J. and Margaret Jean West Appel.

A respiratory therapist, she had been a long-term employee of Scott County Hospital and was an Emergency Medical Technician volunteer. She belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

She is survived by a son, Nicolas Todd Palen, Elbert, Colo.; two daughters, Kristi Daily, Scott City, and Kerri Palen, Denver; four brothers, James, David and Terrence Appel, all of Scott City, and Larry Appel, Grant, Neb.; two sisters, Sharon Appel, Denver, and Noreene Jaeger, Garden City; three grandsons; and one granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Scott County Hospital Respiratory Care Unit, in care of the funeral home.

Virginia Jane Whitley

Funeral for Virginia Jane Whitley, 80, of Dodge City and formerly of Ness City, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Ness City, with the Rev. Sue Talbot officiating. Burial will be in Ness City Cemetery.

Mrs. Whitley died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at Trinity Manor in Dodge City.

She was born Dec. 1, 1921, at Dodge City, the daughter of Jack and Elsie Wilkerson Cohoon.

A homemaker, she had lived in Ness County for 50 years before moving to Dodge City eight years ago. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Gradatim of General Federation Women's Club, both at Ness City.

On April 18, 1946, she married Melvin A. Whitley at Dodge City. He died Sept. 12, 1982. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Cohoon.

Survivors include three sons, Bill and Brent Whitley, both of Ness City, and Mark Whitley, Garden City; two sisters, Joan Stelle, Dodge City, and Colene Cobb, Spearville; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City, and until service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the American Alzheimer's Association, both in care of the funeral home, Box 96, Ness City, KS 67560.

Donald D. Graber

Funeral for Donald D. Graber, 67, a former Garden City resident, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Mennonite Church in Pretty Prairie. Lester Zook, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in First Mennonite Church Cemetery, Pretty Prairie.

Mr. Graber, of Hutchinson, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002.

He was born June 26, 1935, at Pretty Prairie, the son of Walter J. and Mabel Stucky Graber. He attended Red Hill Country School, Pretty Prairie High School and Bethel College.

A longtime resident of Reno County, moving there after living in Garden City for 28 years, he was a farmer. He was a member of First Mennonite Church in Pretty Prairie and was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Korea.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Krehbiel Stucky Graber, Pretty Prairie; a stepson, Gerald Stucky, Wichita; a stepdaughter, Jolene Cameron, Manhattan; three brothers, Ron and Richard Graber, both of Hutchinson, and Larry Graber, Topeka; a sister, Neva Crumb, Topeka; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Heritage Chapel, Hutchinson, with the family greeting friends from 6 to 7 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the Church Missionary Fund or Prairie Sunset Home, both in care of Heritage Funeral Home, 528 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Delmar Eugene Pracht

Funeral for Delmar Eugene Pracht, 85, of Belleville, was today at the First United Methodist Church in Belleville, with the Rev. William Brazil officiating. Military rites were conducted by members of the VFW and American Legion posts of Belleville. Burial was in Belleville City Cemetery.

Mr. Pracht died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Salina Regional Medical Center in Salina.

He was born Dec. 9, 1916, on the family farm 10 miles northeast of Arriba, Colo., the son of Will Calvin and Lillie Leona Dyer Pracht. He lived in Colorado until the family returned to Belleville in 1922. After graduation from Belleville High School in 1934, he continued his education, receiving a rural school teaching certificate.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. While in the Army, he served in Africa and Italy, reaching the rank of technical sergeant in the 17th General Hospital at the time of his discharge Nov. 24, 1945.

On May 29, 1946, he married Ada Beryl Gregory at Smith Center. After their marriage, they moved to a farm south of Belleville, later moving to town in 1973. Mr. Pracht worked most of his adult life in the grocery business in Belleville. He also spent a number of years working for Simm's Floral in Belleville and later as a warehouse man for InterMountain Veterinary Supply.

He is survived by two sons, Willis Charles Pracht, Garden City, and Leslie Eugene Pracht, Walnut Shade, Mo.; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; a great-granddaughter; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Verna Willis, Belleville. His wife died in 1983. He also was preceded in death by his parents.

Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, was in charge of arrangements.

Henry Reifschneider Jr.

DIGHTON - Funeral for Henry Reifschneider Jr., 90, a former resident of Lane County, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Lennie Maxwell officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Reifschneider died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.

He was born Jan. 25, 1912, at Kutter, Russia, the son of Henry Sr. and Eva Maylinger Reifschneider. He came to the United States in 1923, settling with his family in Lane County. A lifelong farmer-stockman in Lane County, in his earlier years he worked on the Hineman Jack Farm.

Mr. Reifschneider had been a Great Bend resident since 1991. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the J.O.Y. Center, both at Dighton, and also belonged to the Great Bend Senior Center. His special interests included hunting, fishing and watching professional wrestling.

On April 28, 1934, he married Bertha Karb at Scott City. She died Aug. 4, 1986. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Reifschneider; a grandson; and a brother, Edward Reifschneider.

He is survived by two sons, Gerald Reifschneider, Concordia, and Dale Reifschneider, Louisville; two daughters, Bettie Stithem, Goodland, and Cheryl Broaderway, Great Bend; a sister, Rosa Popp, Denver; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or the J.O.Y. Center, both in care of the funeral home.

Bernard 'Guy' Hughs

Funeral for Bernard "Guy" Hughs, 92, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with John Clyde Stalford officiating. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery, Liberal.

Mr. Hughs died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 17, 1910, at Graham, Mo., the son of Rufus Dwight and Ollie Pearle Cook Hughs. He grew up on a farm near Graham and attended school there.

Mr. Hughs worked for nine years at Beaty Grocery Warehouse in St. Joseph and then moved to Washington State, where he was a military policeman for the atomic bomb project at Hanford during World War II. In 1945, he returned to St. Joseph, operating a service station until moving to Liberal in 1953. He worked for his uncle and eventually took over the business, Fox Roofing, in 1966. After retiring in 1982, he moved to Canon City, Colo. In 1994, he moved to Garden City. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, bowling and watching his favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves.

He married Mina May Hughes at Troy. She died in June 1987. He also was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Wayne, Beryle, Dale and Earle Hughs; and three sisters, Bernice Erma Proffitt, Clarice Irene Parsons and Estella Opal Hughs.

On July 18, 1987, he married Wanda Marie Le Monnier at Lake Tahoe, Nev. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Donna Kay Cunningham, Reno, Nev.; a stepdaughter, Patti Amerin, Plains; a stepson, John Clyde Stalford, Pueblo, Colo.; a brother, Maurice Glenn Hughs, St. Joseph; a sister, Pearle Velma Pride, Mesa, Ariz.; one grandchild; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ralph A. Gropp

LAKIN - Funeral for Ralph A. Gropp, 84, of Lakin, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lakin, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Garden City Area Veterans.

Mr. Gropp died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

He was born Oct. 19, 1917, in northern Kearny County, the son of Albert and Mattie Bopp Gropp. He attended country schools in Kearny County and graduated from Lakin High School in 1936.

During World War II, he was in the U.S. Army from September 1942 to June 1946, serving in the Asiatic and Pacific Theatre. He then returned to Kearny County, later moving into Lakin in 1964. A farmer and stockman, Mr. Gropp enjoyed his work with cattle and also enjoyed stamp collecting. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lakin and the Farm Bureau and was a lifetime member of the VFW.

On Aug. 18, 1971, he married Bessie A. Pearson at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Stanley L. Pearson, Tribune; two daughters, Marian Day, Leoti, and Ardris Londene, Topeka; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Arthur Pearson; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to High Plains Retirement Village, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Lee L. Brown

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Lee L. Brown, 89, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mr. Brown died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Jan. 2, 1913, at Grigston, the son of Harry F. and Otie Anderson Brown. He graduated from Scott City High School and attended Fort Hays State University. He then taught school in Scott County for 10 years.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, he was a rancher and farmer. He belonged to First Christian Church, Christian Men's Fellowship and the Scott City Square Dance Club, all at Scott City, and was a former member of the Kansas Livestock Association. He had served as a church deacon and church trustee.

On July 31, 1937, he married Gertrude Cauthon at Scott City. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Larry L. Brown, Scott City; a daughter, Delores J. Hughes, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ray Brown; and two sisters, Blanche Messenger and Lena Sperling.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church or Scott County Hospital, both in care of the funeral home.
