Aloysius A. 'Al' Weilert

LEOTI - Vigil service for Aloysius A. "Al" Weilert, 88, will be 7 tonight at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leoti. Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Marienthal.

Mr. Weilert died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Wichita County Hospital in Leoti.

He was born Oct. 15, 1913, at Catherine, the son of Melchior and Bertha Schmidt Weilert.

A farmer, he had been a Wichita County resident since 1955. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

On Jan. 9, 1934, he married Mary Magdalene Gittlein at Ness City. She died May 23, 1991, at Leoti. He also was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

He is survived by four sons, Donald Francis, Robert Eugene and Micheal Allan, all of Leoti, and Kenneth James, Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Dolores Ann Thomas, Richardson, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 5 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials to the Al Weilert Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Michael Stuart Jantzen

ULYSSES - Michael Stuart Jantzen, 18, of Ulysses, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident west of Ulysses.

The son of Stuart K. and Jewel Mae Redger Jantzen, he was born Oct. 23, 1983, at Ulysses. A lifetime resident of Ulysses, he was a construction laborer and belonged to Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Ulysses.

Survivors include his parents, Ulysses; four sisters, Greta Isaac and Rebekah Jantzen, both of Ulysses, Judith Koehn, Galva, and Rachel Seiler, Middleton, Mich.; his grandparents, Jake and Erma Redger, Clayton, N.M.; three nephews; one niece; five uncles; and four aunts. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Sam and Julia Jantzen; and two uncles.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Grant Mennonite Church, Ulysses. Denton Koehn and Brad Koehn, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Grant Mennonite Church, in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Mary E. Thomas

Funeral for Mary E. Thomas, 77, of Hutchinson, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. The Revs. Alan D. Stambaugh and Ken Hathaway will officiate.

Mrs. Thomas died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Dillon Living Center in Hutchinson.

She was born March 19, 1925, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Chester M. and Georgiana Norris Routledge. She graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1942 and also graduated from Texas Christian University.

Mrs. Thomas was the former owner and operator of Dimitt Nursery in Garden City and had been a teacher in Finney County for 30 years. She had been a Hutchinson resident since 1992, retiring from 17 years of pastoral service in many churches with the United Methodist Churches in the Kansas West Conference.

She was a member of Tenth Avenue United Methodist Church, was active in watercolor and woodcarving classes at Delos V. Smith Senior Center, belonged to the Christian Women's Club and United Methodist Women, and played in the Hays Symphony Orchestra.

On May 29, 1949, she married Melvin Eugene Dimitt at Garden City. He died Feb. 20, 1960. On Aug. 5, 1974, she married the Rev. Roger Thomas. He died Dec. 11, 2001.

She is survived by three sons, David E. Dimitt, Garden City, Roger and Chris D. Dimitt, both of Hutchinson; three daughters, Lee Ann Shook, Ulysses; Terra Sue Hibbert, Hoisington, Sherry Odendahl, Wichita, and Mary Lane Keeling, LaVeta, Colo.; three stepchildren, David Thomas, Wichita, Ronald Thomas, Tulsa, Okla., and Norma Overmiller, Smith Center; a sister, Martha Mullen, Hutchinson; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are 5 to 9 tonight at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or Finney County Historical Society, both in care of the mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Louise C. Reece

Funeral for Louise C. Reece, 97, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Linda Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Reece died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Nov. 19, 1904, at Mankato, the daughter of Charles Ford and Pearl Nees Glick.

A Garden City resident since 1956, moving from Topeka, she was a homemaker. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church and had been treasurer of the currently named Sequoyah EHU from 1948 through 1997.

On June 20, 1940, she married Orval M. Reece at Garden City. He survives. She also is survived by a son, James C. Reece, a brother, Robert Glick, and a sister, Arlene Glick, all of Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Sequoyah EHU, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

'Jo Jo' Martinez Jr.

"Jo Jo" Martinez Jr., 44, of Garden City, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 30, 1958, at Trinidad, Colo., the son of Joe D. Martinez and Delores Serna. He lived in Colorado until he was 8, and the family moved to Garden City where he attended schools.

In April 1980, he married Debbie Smith.

Mr. Martinez worked for the City of Garden City for several years. He then worked in landscaping and tree service until becoming ill about two years ago. He enjoyed fishing, riding his bike and visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by his father and stepmother, Joe "J.D." and Linda Martinez, Garden City; a daughter, Jennifer Long, Kansas City, Mo.; a son, Phillip Calderon, Garden City; two brothers, Ronnie Martinez, Garden City, and Donnie Martinez, Ellsworth; two sisters, Louisa Favela, Garden City, and Victoria Garcia, Lawrence; two stepbrothers, Ron Fry, Garden City, and Merlin Fry, Dodge City; and a stepsister, LaVonda Fry, Garden City. He was preceded in death by his mother, his grandparents and a nephew.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

John N. Dyck

CIMARRON - Funeral for John N. Dyck, 77, of Cimarron, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Valleyview Bible Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Stuart Pederson officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Mr. Dyck died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Dodge City.

He was born Feb. 10, 1925, at Corn, Okla., the son of David H. and Lizzie Nikkel Dyck.

A Cimarron resident since 1985, moving from Corn, he was a farmer, custom harvester, carpenter and mechanic for himself and DeFehr Implement in Oklahoma before retiring in 1993. He was a member of Valleyview Bible Church.

On Sept. 19, 1946, he married Ella E. Vogt at Corn. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Kenneth, Corn, and John D., Piedmont, S.D.; four daughters, Judy Kollmorgen, South Haven, Lois Voth, Newton, Marjorie Mattingly, Cimarron, and Kaylin Salmans, Dodge City; a brother, David Dyck Jr., Reedly, Calif.; two sisters, Elizabeth Kroeker, Corn, and Marie Jantz, Lynchburg, Va.; 22 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry Dyck; and a sister, Mathilda Foote.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Burkhart-Ziegler's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Box 786, Cimarron, KS 67835.

Diane M. Kennedy

Diane M. Kennedy, 55, a former Garden City resident, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at her home in Hutchinson.

She was born July 18, 1947, at Stafford, the daughter of Keith and Anne Dewhirst Elmore. She graduated from Scott Community High School in 1965 and from Kansas State University in 1969 with a degree in sociology.

A Garden City resident since 1972, moving from Wichita, she had lived in Hutchinson since 2001. She had worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor for many years, with her latest employment being at Horizon Mental Health Center in Hutchinson. She enjoyed her job there as a job placement specialist helping people find employment.

Mrs. Kennedy was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Chi Omega sorority at Kansas State University.

She is survived by a son, Courtney T. Kennedy, Topeka; a brother, Dan Elmore, Salina; and a sister, Debbie Campbell, Holcomb. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Colleen D. Kennedy; and a brother, Dennis Elmore.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Linda Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Children's Education Fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Lawrence D. Mangan

TRIBUNE - Vigil service for Lawrence D. Mangan, 72, will be 7 p.m. MST Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tribune. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. MST Friday at the church, with the Revs. Benjamin Martin and Mike Helm officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mr. Mangan died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Bowman, N.D.

He was born July 16, 1930, at Cherryvale, the son of Charles Martin and Gertrude Cane Mangan.

A farmer and stockman, he had several interests in economic development in Greeley County, including Oxtown Cattle Feeders, Tribune By-Products and Tribune Compost Co.

Mr. Mangan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Tribune, the Kansas Livestock Association of Topeka and the National Cattleman Beef Association of Washington, D.C.

On Nov. 4, 1950, he married Dolores Altendorf at Cherryvale. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Stephen, Tribune; three daughters, Mary Ann Wing, Hampton, N.H., Dana Nielsen, Manchaca, Texas, and Lisa Robertson, Tribune; two brothers, Jerry, Paola, and John, Cherryvale; five sisters, Trudy Walsh, Viera, Fla., Emerancia Vanderleest, Colorado Springs, Colo., Marie Untereiner, Phoenix, Rose Ann Power, Las Vegas, and Teresa Mangan, Cherryvale; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Visitation hours are until 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to Greeley County Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
