Lavon B. Clark

Funeral for Lavon B. Clark, 85, of Wichita, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Reformation Lutheran Church, Wichita. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Clark, a former area resident, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002.

The daughter of Ira D. and Rosa B. Orf Smith, she was born May 31, 1917, in the Orf family home in Pierceville. She graduated from Lakin High School in 1935, and attended Emporia State Teacher's College, obtaining a degree in education in 1939 and one in commerce in 1940. She began her teaching career in Norwich in 1940, teaching business and physical education. She also taught in Ulysses and at Plainview High School in Wichita.

She received a master's degree in education from Colorado College of Education in Greeley in 1944. In 1945, she accepted a teaching position at Trinidad Junior College in Trinidad, Colo., where she met William E. "Bill" Clark Jr. They were married Dec. 28, 1949, at Scott City.

In July 1950, she and her husband moved to Wichita. In 1951, Mrs. Clark began working as a secretary for the Plainview public schools. She joined the Wichita public schools as a business teacher at Wichita West High School in 1955 and transferred to Wichita Southeast High School when it opened in 1958. She was head of the business department from 1964 until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Bowles, Wichita; and a granddaughter. Her husband died in 1991. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Kansas Humane Society, 4218 Southeast Blvd., Wichita, KS 67210.

Downing & Lahey Mortuary, Wichita, is in charge of arrangements.

Hoyt A. Duncan Jr.

Hoyt A. Duncan Jr., 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002, at West Los Angeles Veterans Hospital.

He was born in Garden City on Feb. 25, 1919.

Mr. Duncan retired from the Seabees in 1960 and from civil service in 1976.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Duncan; a son, Gerald, Llano, Texas; a sister, Myrtle Jaye Dale, Wichita; a brother, James, Garden City; a grandson; and two great-granddaughters.

Burial at sea will be conducted by the Neptune Society.

Bradley C. Post

Bradley C. Post, 37, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 15, 1965, in Wichita to Bill and Carolyn Post of Garden City.

He lived in Jetmore until 1972, when his family moved to Garden City. While in high school, he participated in Boy Scouts and the Bernadine Bell Choir at First United Methodist Church in Garden City, where he was a member.

After high school, he graduated from St. Johns Military Academy in Salina in 1983. He worked in oil fields.

He married Dana Shubert Sept. 15, 1989, in Garden City.

He enjoyed spending time with his children, the outdoors, fishing, hunting, music, art and drawing.

He is survived by his parents; his wife, Dana Post, Garden City; a son, Laramie Post, Garden City; daughters Krystal White, Oklahoma, and Breanna Post, Garden City; a brother, Brian Post, California; a sister, Brenda Jones, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and his grandmother, Beryl Lander, Hutchinson.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The Rev. Deanna Fluck will officiate. Burial will be a private family graveside service at a later time.

Memorials may be made to St. Catherine Hospice in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Janet M. Barlow

Janet M. Barlow, 90, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Center in Garden City.

She was born Nov. 30, 1911, in Ellsworth County, the daughter of Albert and Cordelia Hand Durant.

Her family moved to Holcomb in 1928 when she was a child. She graduated from Holcomb High School in 1928.

She married Merle L. Barlow in Garden City Oct. 11, 1933. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on their farm north of Holcomb.

She was a member of the Holcomb Community Presbyterian Church, where she served on many boards and taught Sunday school.

She also was a 4-H leader and a gardener.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Larry Barlow; a daughter, Diane Liedtke; and a grandson, Sean Barlow.

She is survived by one son, James Barlow of Holcomb; one daughter, Sharon Calhoun Mabe of Upper Marlboro, Md.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be conducted at a later date.

Austin L. Smart

ENID, Okla. - Austin L. Smart, 93, of Enid, Okla., died Nov. 26, 2002 at Methodist Home of Enid.

He was born Sept. 23, 1909 in Utopia, Texas, to James Robert and Leona Elizabeth "Weed" Smart. He moved to California then back to Uvalde, where he graduated from high school. He attended business school in San Antonio, Texas, and Central College in McPherson.

He married Doris E. Eberle May 31, 1933, in her parents' home in McPherson. Soon after, he began teaching and coaching in Tarpley, Texas. He also sold Maytag washers door-to-door in the Hill Country of Texas and graduated from San Marcos Teachers College.

In 1938, he began working for his father-in-law at the Eberle and Company Hardware and Implement Store in Deer Creek. He also farmed north of Deer Creek and operated a Grade A Milking Shorthorn Dairy until 1955, when a back injury stopped him. That December, the family moved back to Texas, where he returned to teaching at the Overage School of Edcouch-Elsa, Texas.

He began his studies toward his Master's Degree at Texas A & I College, Kingsville, and taught high school at Banquete. In 1960, he became the Spanish teacher at Bishop High School, Bishop, Texas. He took summer courses at the University of Colorado and Interamerican University of Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico. He later taught Spanish and history at Deer Creek High School until his retirement.

He enjoyed teaching from the Bible and taught in churches in Deer Creek, Edcouch-Elsa, Bishop and Willow View. He also loved cattle, horses and farming. He received a Grant County Soil Conservation Award.

He was a member of the Deer Creek Lions Club, a Grant County ASCS board member, a member of the Milking Shorthorn Association, the Wheat Growers Association, and the professional education support groups.

At the time of his death, he was a member of the Oklahoma and Texas retired teachers' associations. He was an active member of the Deer Creek Methodist Church and the Willow View United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Irene; and a brother, Marshall.

Surviving are his three daughters, Barbara Dohner, Kingston, Wash., Nancy Webster of Garden City, and Carol Wagner of Nash, Okla.; nine grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Willow View United Methodist Church, 3524 W. Purdue, Enid, Okla. The Rev. Ric Marion will officiate. Burial will follow at the Bayard Cemetery of Deer Creek.

Memorials may be made to Willow View United Church Building Fund, Methodist Home of Enid Activity Fund, or the mission work of the grandchildren in care of the funeral home.

Viola L. Warren

Viola L. Warren, 92, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 10, 1910, at Kenesaw, Neb., the daughter of Roy and Lottie Pearl "Wheeler" Yardley.

She livd her early years in Nebraska and Colorado and moved with her family to Haskell County in 1924. In 1931, the family moved to the Plymell community in Finney County. On Sept. 22, 1929, she was married to Amasa G. Warren in Leoti.

Mrs. Warren and her husband farmed in the Plymell area for 50 years.

She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and doing upholstery work. She also baked many wedding cakes for area residents.

She was a member of the Nazarene Church of Garden City, Ivanhoe Valley Grange, and H.D.U. of Pierceville.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990, her parents, six brothers, two sisters and two great-grandsons.

She is survived by a daughter, Verna Hensley of Garden City; two sons, Vyrl Warren of Pierceville and Jay Warren of Garden City; three brothers, Leonard Yardley and Roy Yardley of Garden City and Virgil Yardley of Fort Dodge; two sisters, Letha Leeper and Evelyn Tabor of Garden City; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene in Garden City, with Pastor Charles West presiding. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene or Alzheimer's Association in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Maurice L. Wisler

Memorial service for Maurice L. Wisler, 82, a former Garden City resident, was 11 a.m. Nov. 9 at Peacock Family Chapel in Lamar, Colo., with Ian Blacker officiating.

Mr. Wisler, of Lamar, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at Prowers Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 31, 1920, at Harper, the son of Curtis Eugene and Getta Lucina Teeter Wisler. He had lived in Garden City in the 1960s.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Thompson, Lamar; a son, Michael Wisler of Lawrence; two daughters, Linda Springer, Lamar, and Denise Wisler, Denver; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and five sisters, Lucille Brown, Pearidge, Ark., Grace Riggs, Pennsylvania, Nina Kent, Sacramento, Calif., Betty Phillips, Anaheim, Calif., and Lois Wisler, Bella Vista, Ark. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Claudine Wisler, in 1982; his parents; two sisters, Frances Fox and Vinita Litsey; and a brother, Howard Wisler.

Mr. Wisler was cremated. Memorials are suggested to the Make a Wish Foundation, Lamar Christian Church or the American Lung Association, either directly or in care of the funeral home, 209 S. Fourth St., Lamar, CO 81052.
