Leona Yost

MONTEZUMA - Leona Yost, 93, Montezuma, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident.

The daughter of Ben D. and Susie (Unruh) Schmidt, she was born Feb. 21, 1909, at McPherson. In 1919, she moved from Las Animas, Colo., to Montezuma.

She and Gerhard N. "George" Yost were married Nov. 13, 1952 at Montezuma.

She was a nurse and a homemaker. She was an assistant for Dr. Hull and Dr. V.A. Leopold for several years.

She was a member of the Church of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Survivors include a step son, Paul Yost, Montezuma; four stepdaughters, Marie Nichols, Macon, and Frances Schmidt, Stella Schmidt and Esther Unruh, all of Montezuma; six brothers, Elmer B. Schmidt, Jesse C. Schmidt, Edwin Schmidt, Harry Schmidt, John Schmidt and Benjamin Schmidt, all of Montezuma; six sisters, Mable Koehn, Ingalls, Hannah Koehn, Luella Harms, Dessie Koehn, Elizabeth Koehn, all of Montezuma, Irene Koehn, Victoria, Texas; 27 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Home Inc. in care of the Montezuma Funeral Home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS. 67867.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Church of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma, with Ministers Charles Schmidt, Norman Koehn and Glen Yost presiding. Burial will be in the North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

Friends may call 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Nellie Katherine "Croft" Burwell

DIGHTON - Nellie Burwell, 92, of 340 S. Lane, Dighton, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at the Eudora Nursing Center, Eudora.

She was born July 21, 1910, at Bluff City, the daughter of Hutchinson and Jeanette Anna "Gonder" Croft.

She lived in Medicine Lodge for four years. Then the family moved to Anthony, and she attended school there through ninth grade. She then attended school in Wichita for two years. Then the family moved to Beeler. She was a mail route carrier, beautician and homemaker.

She was a member of the Beeler Methodist Church.

Oct. 26, 1928, she was married to Ira Burwell of Beeler.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Kent; her parents; two brothers, Arthur and Olin Croft; and one sister who died at birth.

Survivors include one son, Keith, of Tonganoxie; four granddaughers; four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and four step great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today at the Dighton Christian Church, with the Rev. George Bever and Rev. Ben Friesen presiding. Burial will be in the Beeler Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Beeler Methodist Church or the Dighton Christian Church at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Ness City or at the funeral.

Merry Gladys Lucius

TRIBUNE - Merry Gladys Lucius, 95, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born Oct. 18, 1907, at Leoti, the daughter of Charley J. and Lula Matherson Smades.

A lifetime resident of Wichita and Greeley counties, she was owner and operator of the Horace Grocery from 1942 through 1950. She later clerked at several hardware stores in Tribune before retiring in 1992.

Mrs. Lucius was a member of Horace Community Church, where she served as church pianist, was a former 4-H leader and served in the Silver Haired Legislature from 1974 to 1984.

On June 6, 1928, she married Albert Lucius at Syracuse. He died April 13, 1973, at Garden City.

She is survived by a son, Everette A. Lucius, Salmon Arm, British Columbia; a daughter, Mary Lou Kinlund, Tribune; a brother, Earle Smades, Rapid City, S.D.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. MST Saturday at Assembly of God Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Michael Underwood and Gary Dupree officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Visitation hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today, 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to the Greeley County Home Health Care Foundation, in care of the funeral home.

Seraphine Knoblauch

Rosary for Seraphine Knoblauch, 76, of Wichita, will be 7 tonight at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Wichita. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Mrs. Knoblauch died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002.

She graduated magna cum laude and as valedictorian in 1944 at Ransom. She had worked as a bookkeeper for Catholic Social Services, City Cab and Belltone, was a member of Altar Society and Harvest House and was secretary/treasurer for Riverside Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered for many years. She learned to drive after turning 65.

Survivors include three sons, Tom, Washington, D.C., Mark, Tallahassee, Fla., and Matthew, Wichita; a sister, Philomenia Pietz, Garden City; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Salome Kunz Horning; her husband, Thomas H. Knoblauch; two brothers, Albert and John; and five sisters, Salome, Catherine, Anne, Rose and Elizabeth.

Memorials are suggested to the Catholic Care Center, in care of DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary, 201 S. Hydraulic, Wichita, KS 67211.

Walt Bullock

Graveside service for Walt Bullock, 87, will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Franklyn Schroeder officiating.

Mr. Bullock died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born May 24, 1915, on the family farm in northeast Stanton County, the son of Morgan T. and Jennie M. Johnson Bullock. He attended elementary school in the Menno community and later left school to help on the family farm. He then enlisted with the Civilian Conservation Corp., serving from January 1935 until April 1936.

Mr. Bullock lived most of his life in Garden City, where he was a foreman at the Garden City Experiment Station. After 40 years of service to the company, he retired in 1978. He also owned and operated a small farm in Kearny County. He loved to fish, go pheasant hunting, and attend activities at the Eagles Lodge in Garden City where he was a member. He also belonged to the United Methodist Church in Syracuse.

On Aug. 28, 1938, he married Delores Wheeler at Garden City. She died in October 1974. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson; a brother, Lloyd Bullock; a sister, Alice Chambers; and one great-grandchild.

On Aug. 30, 1982, he married Jewel Craig at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by three daughters, Darlene Burnett, Owasso, Okla., Roberta Bridwell, Big Springs, Texas, and Carol Canfield, Lakin; two stepdaughters, Sondra Crump, Manhattan, and Kay Davis, Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, Lester Bullock, Ulysses, and Albert Bullock, Jacksonville, Texas; a sister, Ruth Oliver, Garden City; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Presbyterian Church of Lakin, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Mildred I. Gibson

TRIBUNE - Funeral for Mildred I. Gibson, 82, will be 2 p.m. MST Wednesday at Assembly of God Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Micheal Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mrs. Gibson died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at Greeley County Long Term Care Unit in Tribune.

She was born May 27, 1920, in a sod house in northeast Greeley County, the daughter of John A. and Anna M. Runkle Halfman. She attended Wichita University from 1940 to 1943.

A lifetime Greeley County resident, she was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Assembly of God Church at Tribune, belonged to the Women's Christian Temperance Union at Topeka, was a former Cub Scout Den Mother and served as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Seattle plant during World War II.

On May 7, 1950, she married Howard W. Gibson. He died April 9, 1986, at Wichita. She also was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Survivors include two sons, Howard J. Gibson, Tribune, and Gerald Gibson, Wichita; three sisters, Goldie Coberly, Wichita, Doris Morgan, Tribune, and Esther Munyon, Englewood, Colo.; and five grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 MDT tonight and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to Assembly of God Church, in care of the funeral home.

Lori Piper

ULYSSES - Lori Piper, 39, of Ulysses, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Yates, N.D.

She was born June 27, 1963, at Lamar, Colo., the daughter of Carolyn Sinka.

She is survived by a son, Scott Shoemaker, Ulysses; two daughters, Amanda Keaton, Ulysses, and Brandy Shoemaker, Garden City; her mother, Carolyn Inman, Amarillo, Texas; two brothers, Bogie Foley, Syracuse, and Ted Foley, Spanaway, Wash.; her grandmother, Rose Sinka, Johnson; two grandchildren; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Ian Shoemaker.

Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Mennonite Brethren Church, Ulysses. Nathan Gift, pastor, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Dolores Louise Piper Memorial Fund, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Donald F. Hunt

Funeral for Donald F. Hunt, 92, will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Hunt died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Bethel Home in Montezuma.

He was born Feb. 17, 1910, at Marshall, Ill., the son of Ira and Grace Maurer Hunt. He graduated from high school in Marshall in 1930, from Chicago Technical College in 1935 and from the Utilities Engineering Institute in 1940.

A farmer in the Finney County area since the late 1940s, Mr. Hunt had lived in Wichita and Pierceville before becoming a Garden City resident in 1991. He belonged to Pleasant Valley Methodist Church in Wichita.

On June 4, 1939, he married Catherine Irene Winkler at Connersville, Ill. She died Feb. 17, 1998. He also was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.

He is survived by a son, Dale Hunt, Albuquerque, N.M.; and his guardians, Milo and Marcelle Joyce of Garden City.

Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today and noon until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Bethel Home or Friends of the Lee Richardson Zoo, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
