Harold Lavonn Rhodes

MONTEZUMA - Harold Lavonn Rhodes, 90, of Montezuma, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born March 15, 1912, at Tampa in Marion County, the son of Harry Walter and Lillie Leora Hegle Rhodes.

A farmer and carpenter, he was a member of Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.

On Dec. 27, 1936, he married Mabel B. Mininger at Durham. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Lyle Rhodes, Montezuma, Stuart Rhodes, Scio, Ore., and Mark Rhodes, Windsor, Colo.; four daughters, Berdene Rhodes, Overland Park, Phyllis Koehn and Crystal Koehn, both of Montezuma, and Marilyn Fischer, Scott City; a brother, Lowell "Shorty" Rhodes, Parsons; two sisters, Joan Madsen, Hiawatha, and Geneva Brouhard, Andover; 22 grandchildren; and 48 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Dale, Preston, Jack, Bob, Dean and Carroll Rhodes; and three sisters, Ethel Trumble, Esther Rhodes and Floreine Jantz.

Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Donald Koehn, Cyrus Wedel and Lyndon Toews, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc. or Montezuma Senior Center, both in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Dale E. Saffels

Dale E. Saffels, 81, Topeka, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Midland Hospice House.

He was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Moline, the son of Edwin Clayton and Lillian May Cook Saffels.

Saffels graduated from Moline High School in 1939 and from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. He earned his law degree from the Washburn University School of Law.

He also served in the Army during World War II, commanding the 1373rd Signal Company in France and leaving the Army as a major. He was also a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, holding offices in the local, state and national levels. He was a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and Wichita Bar Foundation and a member of the American Judicature Society, American Bar Association, Kansas Bar Association and the Wichita Bar Association. Saffels was also a member of the Delta Theta Phi and Phi Sigma Kappa fraternities.

In addition to other responsibilities, he was honored as a 1974 distinguished alumnus of Emporia State University, the 1983 Alumnus of the Year for Washburn Law School and received the Distinguished Service Award from the Washburn Law School Association in 1987.

In 1943, he married Winona R. Vahsholtz, and they had three children. They later divorced ,and he married Margaret Elaine Cowger Deiter in 1976.

He was Senior United States District Judge, appointed in 1979 by Jimmy Carter. He also served as county attorney for Finney County, four terms in the Kansas House of Representatives, including a stint as democratic leader of the House, chairman of the Kansas Corporation Commission and member of a private practice. He also ran for governor.

He is survived by his second wife; daughters, Suzanne Dale Gravitt, Virginia Beach, Va.; and Deborah S. Godowns, Leawood; a son, Jim Bradford Saffels, Overland Park; a stepson, Chris Nieman Cowger, Topeka; a stepdaughter, Lynda C. Harris, Dallas, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Penwell & Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th St. in Topeka. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Topeka. A private family burial will take place Tuesday in Moline.

Leo Grasser

Leo Grasser, 69, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis campus, Wichita.

He was born Jan. 12, 1933, in Ford County, the son of Henry and Bernadine "Temaat" Grasser. A farmer and conservation contractor, he was a resident of Wright since 1958 after moving from Hodgeman County.

He was a member of St. Andrews Catholic Church, Wright, as well as a third degree member and past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, council 1862.

Oct. 19, 1957, he married Marilyn Giessel in Dodge City.

His was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Bruce Grasser, Wright, and Gary Grasser, Little River; three daughters, Audrey Scheve, Spearville, Brenda King, Salina, and Amy Grasser, Overland Park; a brother, Gerald Grasser, Garden City; three sisters, Margaret Ruder, Grandfork, N.D., Louise Lampe, Spearville, and Elvera Lorenzen, Hutchinson; and three grandchildren.

Friends may call noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City.

Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrews Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday with the Revs. Robert Schremmer and John J. Maes presiding, and the Rev. Dwaine Lampe assisting. Burial will be at St. Andrews Cemetery, Wright.

The family requests memorials be made to the St. Andrews Cemetery Fund in care of Burkhart-Zeigler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Cindy M. Overocker

Cindy M. Overocker, 17, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, in Finney County due to injuries in an automobile accident.

She was born May 19, 1985, in Coldwater, the daughter of James A. and Deborah L. Gabel Overocker. A lifetime resident of Garden City, she was a waitress at Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Garden City. She is survived by her parents; a brother, Jamie Overocker, Seguin, Texas; a sister, Jennifer Overocker, Garden City; and grandmothers Mary Overocker, Protection, and Reita Gabel, Ness City.

Friends may call noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City.

The service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating. Interment will be at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

The family requests that memorials be given to the Cindy M. Overocker Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.

Alvin Stoppel

Alvin Stoppel, 78, Sublette, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002 at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis campus, Wichita.

He was born Jan. 9, 1924, in WaKeeney, the son of Jacob and Magdelina (Mai) Stoppel.

He married Joan Haflinger Dec. 22, 1946, in WaKeeney. They moved to Holcomb in 1947 and to Sublette in 1956. He was a farmer, Novartis Seed dealer and former co-owner of Stoppel Equipment. He also was a member of the United Methodist Church, Sublette.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sons; a daughter, Alana Mae Stoppel; a brother, Ernest Stoppel; and a sister, Alma Hoffman.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Thomas Stoppel, Sublette, and Michael Stoppel, Derby; three daughters, Mary Ann Barber, Sublette, Pam Zimmerman, Garden City, and Patty Noland, Bartlesville, Okla.; two brothers, Edward Stoppel, Sublette, and Arthur Stoppel, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and eight grandchildren; nine grandchildren.

Friends may call 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Keith Fink presiding. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Alvin Stoppel Memorial Fund on behalf of Special Kids of Bartlesville, Okla., the Make A Wish Foundation or the donor's choice. Memorials may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Harry Allen Brehm

Harry Allen Brehm, 48, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Nov. 19, 1953, in Garden City, the son of Harry Paul and Rosie Bender Brehm. He was a mechanic for Pile Trucking and a lifetime resident of Garden City.

He was a member of the Baptist faith and preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Nancy Ginest and Cheri Hohramann.

He is survived by a daughter, Cristy Clawson, Grants, N.M.; three sisters, Kay Homewood, Russell, Carol Tipton, Kinsley and Aneda Burroughs, Elkhart; and three grandchildren.

Private family graveside services were at 3 p.m. Friday at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating.

Memorials may be sent to the Harry A. Brehm Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St., Garden City, KS 67846.

Bonnie M. Delker

Funeral for Bonnie M. Delker, 92, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Great Bend Church of Christ, with Kevin Plowman officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Park Cemetery, St. John.

Mrs. Delker died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Central Kansas Medical Center Long Term Care of Ellinwood.

She was born Dec. 27, 1909, in Stafford County, the daughter of Walter M. and Bertha Adcock Snell. She graduated from St. John High School and Wichita Business College.

In 1935, she married Orval V. Delker.

Mrs. Delker retired in 1985 after 31 years as a typist for Barton County Abstract and Title Co. She was a member of Church of Christ in Great Bend.

She is survived by a son, David W. Delker, Wichita; two daughters, Merita F. Rice, Pawnee Rock, and Alpha M. Honaker, Denver; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; a brother, Walter W. Snell, Garden City; and a sister, Margaret R. Lambert, Newton. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Fryberger Mortuary Chapel, Great Bend, and from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Saturday at the church. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the mortuary.

Memorials are suggested to Great Bend Church of Christ, in care of the mortuary, 2115 Washington, Great Bend, KS 67530.
