Ruth E. Miller

LAKIN - Ruth E. Miller, 74, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin following a recent illness.

She was born Feb. 1, 1928, at Garber, Okla., the daughter of George and Maggie Mae Tuni.

Mrs. Miller and her late husband Glen E. Miller were longtime residents of the Holly, Colo., area. She moved recently to Lakin.

She is survived by two children: a daughter, Glenda Crisostomo, of Guatemala and a son, David Miller, Lakin, and by Alma Plunkett, Coolidge, who was raised as a daughter; two sisters, Elsie Waggerman and Thelma Henderson, both of Garber, Okla.; one brother, Charles Tunis of Garber, Okla. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 24 foster children.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly, Colo.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time Monday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly.

Memorials may be made to the High Plains Retirement Center of Lakin or to Gideons, either directly or through Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Holly, Colo.

Thang Quoc Nguyen

Thang Quoc Nguyen, 30, Garden City, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, as a result of a shooting in his home.

He was born Dec. 31, 1971, in Vietnam, the son of Giang Van Nguyen and Bau Thi Tran.

He lived in Garden City since 1995. He worked at IBP and enjoyed playing soccer. He was a member of the Vietnamese Southern Baptist Church, Garden City.

Along with his parents, he is survived by brothers, Thai Quoc Nguyen, Loi Dac Nguyen, both of Garden City, Binh Quoc Nguyen, Bao Quoc Nguyen, Son Quoc Nguyen, all of Vietnam; sisters, Hong Thu Thi Nguyen and Ann Thi Nguyen, both of Garden City.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Tran officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. to service time Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home.

The family requests no memorials.

Lena Koehn Ratzlaff

MONTEZUMA - Lena Koehn Ratzlaff, 93, of Montezuma, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident since March 9, 1990.

She was born June 25, 1909, at Isabella, Okla., the daughter of David C. and Eva Schmidt Koehn.

On Aug. 15, 1954, she married Joe Ratzlaff at Winton, Calif. He died March 4, 1968. She also was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and four sisters.

A homemaker, Mrs. Ratzlaff was a member of Homeland Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.

She is survived by a stepson, Raymond Ratzlaff, Montezuma; a brother, Dave A. Koehn, Cimarron; five grandchildren, including Mary Lou and Earl, whom she helped raise in her home; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Homeland Mennonite Church, Montezuma. Vernon Koehn, Donald Koehn and Luther Smith, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Homeland Mennonite Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Dorothy A. 'Dot' Mowery

Funeral for Dorothy A. "Dot" Mowery, 53, of Hutchinson, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Hutchinson. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City. Officiants will be the Revs. Tim Soule and David Sweley.

Mrs. Mowery died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, in Harvey County.

She was born Aug. 22, 1949, at Garden City, the daughter of William L. and Margaret Lawrence Lewis. She grew up in Garden City, graduated from Garden City High School in 1967 and from Kansas State University in 1971 with a degree in home economics and earned her master's degree in counseling from Wichita State University.

A Hutchinson resident since 1984, moving from Lawton, Okla., she worked at the Hutchinson Office of Social & Rehabilitation Services. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hutchinson where she served as an elder and deacon. She also belonged to P.E.O. Chapter HQ and was a Pi Beta Phi sorority member.

She is survived by a daughter, Megan Mowery, of the home; her mother, Garden City; and three sisters, Mary Wolf, Overland Park, Pattie McGurk, Great Bend, and Jane Clark, Oklahoma City. She was preceded in death by her father.

Friends may sign the registry book until 9 tonight at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church of Garden City after the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church or the P.E.O. Educational Fund, both in care of the mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Charlie Richard Owens

LAKIN - Charlie Richard Owens, 69, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at his home in Lakin.

He was born May 3, 1933, at Salina, Okla., the son of George Henry and Goldie Mae Black Owens.

On March 17, 1951, he married Delores Lou Cox at Miami, Okla. They moved to Lakin in 1957.

Mr. Owens was employed with Dienst Farms for 20 years and then worked for Popejoy Construction until his retirement in 1995. He was a member of the VFW, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, playing bingo in Garden City, and hanging out with the guys at Auto Source.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Richard Owens, Holcomb; three daughters, Carol Schulz, Lakin, Tammy Craig, Pueblo West, Colo., and Deborah Horwat, Fountain, Colo.; his mother, Goldie Frantz, Lakin; a sister, Glenda Cox, Lakin; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Lakin Wesleyan Church.

A memorial fund in his name has been established at Golden Plains Credit Union.

Linda Kay Yost

Funeral for Linda Kay Yost, 59, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Word of Life Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Gary Don Newman officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Yost died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Dec. 7, 1942, at Duncan, Okla., the daughter of James Dewey and Flossie Fay Pierce Jennings.

A Garden City resident since 1997, moving from Copeland, she was a homemaker. She was a member of Word of Life Church and was past president of the Covenant Women at the church.

On Oct. 1, 1972, she married Mervin Yost at Copeland. He survives. She also is survived by two daughters, Lori Walter and Dana Bullock, both of Garden City; a sister, Betty Childs, Sterling; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Word of Life Church Missions Fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Kenneth E. Canning

ELKHART - Funeral for Kenneth E. Canning, 78, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Elkhart, with the Rev. Dewey Harris officiating. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Elkhart Area Masonic Lodge members.

Mr. Canning died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Feb. 22, 1924, at the Sandy Hook community in Cimmaron County, Okla., the son of John L. and Margaret Thomas Canning and Sarah Belle Canning. He grew up in Cimmaron County and attended schools there.

A lifetime resident of Cimmaron and Morton counties, he was a retired farmer. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elkhart and was a 32nd degree Mason of the Masonic Lodge, Elkhart. His special interests included farming, fishing, music and spending time with his friends and neighbors.

On July 19, 1952, he married Glendene Fay Cunningham at Clayton, N.M. She survives at Vici, Okla. He also is survived by two daughters, Glenda Albert, Oklahoma City, and Kim Shelley of Vici; a brother, Carl Canning, Wichita; a sister, Gladys Geiger, Branson, Mo.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, his mothers and a sister, Margie Cole.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Burn and Trauma Center of Wichita, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Lena Smith

ELKHART - Graveside service for Lena Smith, 97, was to be 11 this morning in Elkhart Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Brackett officiating.

Mrs. Smith died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Morton County Health System in Elkhart.

She was born Nov. 6, 1905, at Green City, Mo., the daughter of Frank and Dela Frazier Lunsford. In 1906, when she was 2 months old, the family moved from Missouri to the Oklahoma Panhandle.

A lifetime resident of southeast Colorado and southwest Kansas, she attended schools in Stonington, Colo.

On March 3, 1927, she married Harry Smith at Richfield. In 1929, they moved to Morton County, where they lived on the family farm north of Elkhart for 70 years. He died in August 1966. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marjorie Wade; a sister, Gladys Heriford; and four brothers, Raymond, Frankie and Pete Lunsford and Dean Brown.

A homemaker, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elkhart, a charter member of Morton County Hospital Auxiliary, belonged to the Kansas Polled Hereford Association and was a 1961 Master Homemaker. Her special interests included baking and crocheting.

She is survived by a son, Bob G. Smith, Elkhart; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters-in-law.

Garnand Funeral Home, Elkhart, was in charge of arrangements.
