Rose E. Smith

SCOTT CITY - Memorial service for Rose E. Smith, 84, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating.

Mrs. Smith died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

She was born July 9, 1918, at Olmitz, the daughter of John and Mary Siedel Springer.

A Scott City resident for more than 60 years, moving from Grigston, she was a retired operating room technician at Scott County Hospital. She was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City.

On Jan. 4, 1939, she married Walter Smith at Scott City. He died Nov. 5, 1984, at Scott City. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by two daughters, Carol Burnett, Scott City, and Cathy Smith, Great Bend; a sister, Mary Boxberger, Hoisington; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital or the American Kidney Foundation, both in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City.

Noble 'Nubs' Melin

Noble Conrad Severin "Nubs" Melin, 91, of Superior, Wis., died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth, Wis.

He was born Jan. 8, 1911, at Grantsburg, Wis., the son of Conrad and Elvira Olson Melin.

A retired carman for the Burlington Northern and former Great Northern Railroads, he had served in the National Guard Medical Corps.

Mr. Melin was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church for 50 years and sang in the church choir. He also belonged to Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 80 and Toastmaster's International No. 1523 of Duluth. He was instrumental in the development of the Superior Speed Skating Club and was a coach during the 1960s and 1970s. He also was a member of the International Brotherhood of Carmen, the Burlington Northern Retirement Association, Burlington Northern Veterans, Billings Park Civic Center and the American Association of Retired Persons.

On Sept. 4, 1937, he married Ann Elizabeth Schold. She survives. He also is survived by three daughters, Marcia Kahl, Seattle, Andrea "Andy" Hackman, Scandia, Minn., and Miriam "Tina" Thompson, Superior; two sons, Dr. Bruce Melin, Garden City, and Paul Melin, Richmond, Va.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Stanley Melin; and a sister, Opal Nolan.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Superior, followed by burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation hours begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at Downs Funeral Home in Superior and in the church Friday one hour prior to the service.

Joyce Sue Sullivan

ULYSSES - Memorial service for Joyce Sue Sullivan, 70, of Denver, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses. Inurnment will follow in Ulysses Cemetery. A memorial service also is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Mary, Denver.

Mrs. Sullivan died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, in Denver.

She was born June 9, 1932, at Oklahoma, the daughter of Albert and Delphia Van Brundt Ryan.

An artist, she had exhibited nationally, most recently in the National Rocky Mountain Watermedia Exhibition in the Foothills Gallery at Golden, Colo.

On Aug. 29, 1951, she married Tom R. Sullivan at Ulysses. He died May 8, 1991.

She is survived by her father of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; two sons, Wade and Mark Sullivan, and two daughters, Jan Sullivan Robinson and Lisa Bailey, all of Denver; a brother, Michael Ryan, Gillette, Wyo.; a sister, Patricia Fort, Ulysses; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Denver Rescue Mission, 1130 Park Avenue West, Denver, CO 80205 or to the donor's choice.

Dr. Krishna Rama Das

Funeral for Dr. Krishna Lingaiah Rama Das, 57 a former Garden City resident, was to be 12:30 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church, Liberal. Cremation was to follow.

He died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Galichia Heart Hospital in Wichita.

He was born Sept. 22, 1945, at Mysore, India, the son of Y.S. Lingaiah and Thayamma Lingaiah. He grew up in an agricultural family, his father being a mayor of Krishnarajanagara, India.

Coming to the United States on a scholarship, Dr. Das received his education at Mysore University and the University of Michigan. His degrees included a medical degree, a master's in psychiatry, and a master's in public health. He was a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and belonged to the American Medical Association, Kansas State Medical Association and several other professional organizations.

Dr. Das had been a clinical assistant professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine at Wichita. He had practiced medicine in Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, New York and Kansas, and had worked at the University of Michigan, University of Kansas and the Meninger Clinic.

A Liberal resident for seven years, having previously lived in Garden City, Topeka and Wichita for another seven years, he was a psychiatrist with Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.

While in India, Dr. Das did much charity work, including building educational institutions in Hosadurga and Mysore, India. He created the TTL Trust in Mysore and also supported various charities in the areas of health care and family shelters. He served as a personal secretary of Honorable Devaraja Urs, former chief minister of Karnataka, India.

Dr. Das was an accomplished scholar of Sanskrit, Hindi and Kannada and had publications in professional journals. His hobbies included reading, composing poems, dining, travel, pursuit of spirituality, and understanding of the human mind.

In 1971, he married Geetha Bali Narasappa Ramadas in India. He married Radha Mandyam Thirumalachar on Nov. 27, 1988, at Bangalore, India. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Chethana Ramadas, Denver; two brothers, Raj Bhushan, New York City, and K.L. Krupashankar, Mysore; and a sister, K.L. Bhagya, Mysore. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Liberal Memorial Library, in care of Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, 1212 W. Second, Liberal, KS 67901.

Kenny Kingston

Kenny Kingston, 66, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 30, 1936, at St. James, Mo., the son of Albert Richard and May Laney Kingston. He grew up in St. James and attended schools there.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from June 1954 to April 1956. After the service, he came to Garden City for a short time before returning to St. James. He moved back to Garden City in 1958.

On May 13, 1960, he married Margaret Martin at Las Vegas. They moved to California in the early 1960s. After living there for a short time, they returned to Garden City.

Mr. Kingston was a self-employed truck driver. He enjoyed watching squirrels, watching CNN, traveling to Las Vegas, playing cards and visiting with people.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jeff Kingston; a sister, Opal Wishon, Holcomb; and four granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wanda June Valley.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Church of the Brethren, Garden City. Chaplain Doug Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by Garden City Area Veterans.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Tracy Arnold

Johnson - Tracy Arnold, 16, of Johnson, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

She was born March 7, 1986, at Johnson, the daughter of Steve and Kathleen Bergkamp Arnold.

A junior at Stanton County High School in Johnson, Tracy was a member of the yearbook staff, Ulysses Sharks Swim Team and the State Vocal Ensemble, was on the SCHS Outstanding Student List, participated in the Academic Contest and the Math and Science Relays, and was a member and officer of Sunflower 4-H Club. She was on the Pom Pon Squad, cross country team, track team and KAYS for three years, and participated in the school musical, was the girl's basketball manager and belonged to SADD for one year. She had served as junior class secretary, sophomore class president, freshman Student Council representative and eighth grade class president. She also was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers, Travis and Andy Arnold, both of Johnson; her grandparents, Wilfred and Anna Bergkamp of Colwich, and Earl and Judy Arnold, Johnson; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her brother, Tony R. Arnold, who also died from injuries suffered in the accident.

Rosary and memorial Mass will be 7 p.m. Sunday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Louis Hoang officiating. Funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Stanton County High School Auditorium, Johnson, with the Revs. Hoang and Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will follow in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Steve Arnold Family Medical Fund, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

Lester J. 'Les' Herrman

ENSIGN - Vigil service for Lester James "Les" Herman, 74, of Ensign, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Dodge City. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City, with the Rev. Ted Skalsky officiating. Burial will be in Ensign Cemetery.

Mr. Herrman died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at his home in Ensign.

He was born April 28, 1928, at Liebenthal, the son of Bartholomew G. Herrman and Dorothy C. Schaffer. The family moved to Garden City in 1941 and to Ensign in 1942. He graduated from high school in Ensign, and attended Dodge City Junior College and Adela Hale Business School in Hutchinson. He then returned to Ensign to work at Nelson Implement.

In 1952, he and his father formed Ensign Implement Co. For the next 42 years, he operated the local John Deere dealership along with his three brothers and one son. Upon retirement, he continued to operate Ensign Implement Co. and farmed with his family.

Mr. Herrman was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 2955, both at Dodge City.

On Aug. 23, 1948, he married Betty J. Pegram at Dodge City. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Chris A. Herrman, Ensign, and Michael K. Herrman, Garden City; a daughter, Lori A. Wade, Dodge City; three brothers, Gerald, Clarence and Donald Herrman, all of Ensign; his mother-in-law, Ensign; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 3231 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Clara Mae Rinehart

KENDALL - Funeral for Clara Mae Rinehart, 66, will be 10:30 a.m. CST Wednesday at Lakin United Methodist Church, with the Revs. David and Linda Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Mrs. Rinehart died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born May 5, 1936, at Durango, Colo., the daughter of Harold and Glendora Wilkin Frizell. She grew up in Durango, graduating from Durango High School in 1954.

On Oct. 16, 1954, she married Glen G. Rinehart at Monticello, Utah. They have lived in Kendall since moving there in 1954. Her special interests included helping her husband with the farm, driving tractors, hauling meals to the field, traveling, snow-mobiling, taking art classes, painting and drawing, cross-stitching, playing piano for her church, and keeping the books for her daughter and son-in-law's business.

Mrs. Rinehart was a member of Kendall United Methodist Church, Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 244 at Lakin, and Social Order of the Beauceant Assembly No. 12 in Dodge City.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Sheri Kay Jones, Lamar, Colo.; a daughter-in-law; two sisters, Juanita Cosslett, Grand Junction, Colo., and Edris Calvert, Monticello; a brother, Robert H. Frizell, Grand Junction; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Ronald D. Rinehart.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to Kendall United Methodist Church, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.
