Floyd F. Powers

Vigil service for Floyd F. Powers, 91, will be 8:30 p.m. Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph E. Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military rites conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Mr. Powers died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 8, 1911, at Manistee, Mich., the son of Frank and Blanche Powers Zelinski. He grew up in Manistee, graduated from high school at Lansing, Mich., and earned a degree in marketing from the University of Detroit.

He worked for Chrysler before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. A captain, he served in the South Pacific. After his discharge, he moved to Garden City in 1946 and became a lifelong farmer. His special interests were his work, sports, fishing and reading religious material.

Mr. Powers was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks Lodge, Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9 and the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, and was a lifetime member of National Farmers Union.

On Feb. 8, 1962, he married Frieda C. Gerber at Garden City. She died Aug. 9, 1994. He also was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include two sons, Roger and Gary Powers, both of Garden City; a brother, Leon Zelinski, Castaic, Calif.; and twin granddaughters.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic Catholic Church or Emmaus House, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Mable Darlene Moore

ELKHART - Graveside service for Mable Darlene Moore, 75, a former resident of Elkhart, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Elkhart Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Cunningham officiating.

Mrs. Moore, of Dodge City, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born July 6, 1927, at Olin, Iowa, the daughter of William and Rachel Reid Goarcke. She spent her early years at Olin and graduated from high school at Olwein, Iowa.

She had lived for about 10 years in Maquoketa, Iowa, and another 10 years in Autumwa, Iowa, and had previously resided in Amarillo, Texas; El Paso, Texas; Arkansas City; Hoisington and Elkhart. A Dodge City resident for the past two years, she was a homemaker. Her special interests included watching her grandchildren playing sports, cooking and spending time with her family. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church of Hoisington.

On June 20, 1947, she married Maurice Moore at Lost Nation, Iowa. He died Dec. 30, 1996. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Merle Goarcke; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

She is survived by three sons, Sonny Douglas Moore, Arkansas City, Spencer Dean Moore, Great Bend, and Stuart David Moore, Moscow; a daughter, Sandra Dianne Norton, Dodge City; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Emanuel Lutheran Church of Hoisington, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

William C. Fraze

William C. Fraze, 73, a former Garden City resident, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, in Denver.

He was born May 16, 1929, at Boulder, Colo., and was a resident of Garden City from early childhood until the late 1960s. He graduated from Garden City High School prior to serving in the U.S. Army from November 1946 until November 1949.

He is survived by two daughters, Ceceilia Sherraden, Garden City, and Sue Coester, Girard; two sons, Jan O. Fraze, Woodward, Okla., and Willie C. Fraze, Hays; three grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mazie Blough Fraze Hisey; his father, W.C. Fraze; and his stepfather, Charles Hisey.

Services were conducted Dec. 17 at Denver and officiated by his son, Jan O. Fraze. Burial was in Fort Logan Veterans Cemetery in Denver.

Tony Pratt

Funeral for Tony Pratt, 37, of Stillwater, Okla., was 10 a.m. Monday at St. Johns Catholic Church, Stillwater, with the Rev. Ken Harder officiating. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery, southwest of Stillwater.

Mr. Pratt died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

He was born March 30, 1965, at Stillwater, the son of Francis and Mary Kay Thompson Pratt. He graduated from Stillwater High School and attended Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Okla. He then returned to Stillwater and worked at Moore Business Forms. He was employed at Jack Griffith's Convenience Stores for 10 years as a store manager. Earlier this year, he became the home delivery manager at the Stillwater News-Press, a position he held at the time of his death.

Mr. Pratt had been an active member of the Cowboy Country Jaycees since 1986. He held various positions at the local and state level, including local chapter president, district director of the Oklahoma Jaycees and vice president of the Oklahoma Jaycees Governor's Club. As a Jaycee, he received numerous awards, including Outstanding Club President. He enjoyed all facets of Oklahoma State University sports. His greatest love was spending time with his wife, son, nephews and brothers.

On Sept. 2, 1995, he married Ann Fina at Stillwater. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Zachary Alan Pratt, of the home; and four brothers, Gary and David Pratt, both of Stillwater, Randy Pratt, Garden City, and Scott Pratt, St. Louis. He was preceded in death by an infant child and his grandparents.

Memorials are suggested to the Tony Pratt Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Sissie Harmon, 3404 S. 24th, Chickasha, OK 73018.

Norma J. 'Jean' Taylor

Norma J. "Jean" Taylor, 67, of Hutchinson, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Hospice House.

She was born June 1, 1935, at Hutchinson, the daughter of John William and Odelia Amelia Uphoff Jones. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1953, attended Oklahoma Women's College in Chickasha, Okla., and majored in music at Wichita State University.

A homemaker, she had been a longtime resident of Reno County, moving to Great Bend in 1970 and returning to Hutchinson in May 2002. She was a member of First Church of The Nazarene in Great Bend, was a longtime pianist for the church, belonged to the Hutchinson Iris Club, served on the board of directors and as secretary for the Barton County Historical Society, and was a member of Barton County Genealogical Society.

On Nov. 26, 1955, she married Bernard L. Taylor at Garden City.

She is survived by three sons, Steve, Ottawa, Ill., and Greg and Doug, both of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Valerie Tittel, Hutchinson, and Michelle Clone, Great Bend; a brother, Marlin Jones, Garden City; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Kerry Clone; and a granddaughter, Tessa Tittel.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Church of The Nazarene, Hutchinson, with Dr. Charles G. McCallum officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. Memorials are suggested to Hospice House or Barton County Historical Society, both in care of the mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.

Denise R. Triplitt

Denise R. Triplitt, 42, of Newton, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Newton Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 6, 1960, at Wichita, the daughter of Forest D. "Trip" and Glenda K. Worthington Triplitt. She grew up in Valley Center, graduating from Valley Center High School in 1978. She later graduated from Garden City Community College with a degree in nursing.

Miss Triplitt worked as a registered nurse for Newton Medical Center's surgical unit and was a member of First Baptist Church in Valley Center.

She is survived by her lifetime companion, Retta Underwood, Newton; her parents, Newton; a brother, Dale A. Triplitt, Salina; a sister, Deborah S. Hensley, Newton; seven nephews; six nieces; and two great-nieces.

Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Dec. 31 at First Missionary Church, Newton, with the Revs. Ray Adams and Louise MacClanahan officiating. Burial will be in Kechi Cemetery, Kechi.

Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton. Memorials are suggested to Newton Medical Center or Caring Hands Humane Society, both in care of the funeral home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114.

Melvin E. Schoonover

SCOTT CITY - Melvin E. Schoonover, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 14, 1912, at Scott City, the son of Joseph Lawson and Sybilla Christine Neuenschwander Schoonover.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, he worked for Wright Chevrolet from 1946 until retiring in 1977. He was a mechanic for two years and then served the company as its parts manager for 29 years.

Mr. Schoonover was a member of First Christian Church and Friends Of The Library, both at Scott City, and the AARP.

On May 19, 1934, he married Genevieve M. Rictor at Garden City. She died April 5, 1990, at Scott City. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph, and an infant brother, Walter; and two sisters, Hazel Grube and Della Winderlin.

He is survived by a son, Leo Schoonover, Scott City; two daughters, Verda Dietz, Lakin, and Letha Williamson, Satanta; a sister, Sara Esther Wilkerson, Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with Steven Payne officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are until 5 tonight and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Friends Of The Library or First Christian Church, both in care of the funeral home.

Keith E. 'Gene' Thacker

Keith Eugene "Gene" Thacker, 76, of Russell Springs, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born May 13, 1926, at Leoti, the son of Forrest A. and Sarah M. Thurston Thacker.

A farmer, he was a lifetime resident of Wichita and Logan counties. He belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 318 of Winona and the United Methodist Church.

On Aug. 6, 1950, he married Helen L. Mastin at Weskan. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Larry Thacker, Winona; a daughter, Linda Ayers, Page City; three brothers, Herman Thacker, Canyon Country, Calif., Alan Thacker, Salt Lake City, and Vernon Thacker, Caldwell, Idaho; two sisters, Luverne Keith, Tribune, and Dorothy Robertson, Kuna, Idaho; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Ralph and Paul Thacker.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Kennedy-Koster Funeral Home, Oakley, with the Rev. Paul McNall officiating. Burial will be in Russell Springs Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Butterfield Trail Historical Association or Masonic Lodge No. 318, both in care of the funeral home, Box 221, Oakley, KS 67748.
