Horace J. Allen

Horace J. Allen, 93, of Dodge City, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.

He was born Aug. 18, 1909, at Howell, the son of Charles B. Allen and Lena Merk. He graduated from Dodge City High School.

On Dec. 31, 1940, he married Vivian Blanche Tucker at Yuma, Ariz. They lived in Bellflower, Calif., from 1940 to 1948. While living in California, he worked for Douglas Aircraft during World War II. In 1948, they moved to Dodge City, where he was involved in farming.

Mr. Allen was a member of First Christian Church, Loyal Workers Sunday School class, Odd Fellows, Canton Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, and Encampment, all at Dodge City.

His wife died April 19, 2002. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Lester W. Allen.

He is survived by a son, James R. Allen, Bucklin; a brother, Donald Allen, San Jose, Calif.; three sisters, Edna Reynolds, Dodge City, Pauline Irsik, Garden City, and Eldred Johnson, Whittier, Calif.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with Larry Williams officiating.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.

Mary Ellen Jones

Johnson - Mary Ellen Jones, 74, of Johnson, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born April 6, 1928, at Garden City, the daughter of Merle and Noreen Holmes Dailey. She spent her early years in Garden City until moving to Johnson in 1956.

A homemaker, she was a member of Shelton Memorial Christian Church at Ulysses and the Futorum Club at Johnson, was a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader at Johnson, and enjoyed spending time at the Stanton County Senior Center working on ceramics.

She married Ray E. Jones on March 6, 1959, at Garden City. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Mike Jones, Wichita; a daughter, Carolyn Layman, Dodge City; two brothers, Eldon Dailey, Garden City, and Richard Dailey, Loveland, Colo.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Stanton County Senior Center, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Sierra Cheyenne Winters

Johnson - Sierra Cheyenne Winters, 19-month-old daughter of Tom and Cindy K. Morris Winters of Johnson, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at her home in Johnson following a lengthy illness.

She was born May 22, 2001, at Wichita.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two half brothers, John P. and Chance E. Winters, and a half sister, Heather L. Winters, all of Calhan, Colo.; her grandparents, Ed Winters, Pawhuska, Okla., Bob and Faye Stitzel of Osbourne, and Jim and Velma Morris, Ulysses; her great-grandparents, Velmer and Christine Wise, Ulysses, and Earl and Nita Eaton of Osbourne; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a half sister, Debra D. Winters; and her great-grandmothers, Lena Winters and Bernita Jones.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Church Of The Nazarene, Ulysses, with the Rev. Richard Stafford officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson. Memorials to the Sierra Cheyenne Winters Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

Gerald Duane Rouse

ULYSSES - Funeral for Gerald Duane Rouse, 84, of Ulysses, was to be 10 this morning at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Dennis H. Livingston officiating. Burial was to follow in Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Charles B. Hart American Legion Post No. 79.

Mr. Rouse died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

He was born Sept. 17, 1918, at Kanorado, the son of Leonard and Etta M. Pentico Rouse. He graduated from Goodland High School and spent two years in seminary at Colorado Springs, Colo. He then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

A Ulysses resident since 1947, Mr. Rouse worked at Crocker Theater for 12 years and then was the parts manager at Grant County Implement until retiring after 26 years. He also was a carpenter and cabinet maker and a member of the First United Methodist Church and Charles B. Hart American Legion Post No. 79, both at Ulysses.

On Sept. 1, 1942, he married Roberta Crocker at Colorado Springs. She survives. He also is survived by a daughter, Marsha Sherrod, Joplin, Mo.; a brother, Harold Rouse, Liberal; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Smith.

Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Ulysses or Young Life Ministries, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Clarence 'Whitie' Hilyard Jr.

Funeral for Clarence "Whitie" Hilyard Jr., 76, of Jacksonville, Fla., and formerly of Garden City and El Dorado, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, El Dorado. Burial will follow at the cemetery in Stafford.

Mr. Hilyard died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

He was born Nov. 18, 1926, at Braman, Okla., the son of Clarence and Ruth Foster Hilyard. His family moved to various towns in Kansas and Oklahoma due to their involvement in the oil industry. As a young boy, he worked with his brother and his father in the family oil-casing business. When he was 17, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as a gunners mate on the USS Colorado. He was in 16 major engagements in the Pacific during World War II and received many medals including a Purple Heart.

Mr. Hilyard owned and operated Whi Mar Drilling Co. and for 35 years he owned and operated Western Bit and Supply Inc. in Garden City, Arkansas City and Ponca City, Okla. He had also lived in Hutchinson, Liberal, Wichita and Sarasota, Fla. He attended First Christian Church of El Dorado, was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Shrine Club and K.I.O.G.A. He loved to hunt and fish and was a lifetime enthusiast of golf.

In 1945, he married Nadine Carson in Stafford. She died in 1975. He married Janice Barger Jones in 1975 at Las Vegas. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Mark Hilyard, Ponca City; three daughters, Jann Ziegler, El Dorado, Sue Johnson and Elissa Hilyard, both of Wichita; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson's Foundation or the PGA Junior Golf Association, both in care of Kirby-Morris Funeral Home, 224 W. Ash, El Dorado, KS 67042.

Melvin E. Schoonover

Melvin E. Schoonover, 90, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital.

He was born Sept. 14, 1912, in Scott City and was a lifetime resident of the community.

Friends may visit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral home, 401 S. Washington St., in Scott City.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church. Interment will follow at Scott County Cemetery.

Melvin L. Stoppel

SCOTT CITY - Melvin L. Stoppel, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City. He was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Ellsworth County, the son of Chris and Lucy Fry Stoppel. In 1930, he moved to farm in Scott City, where he was a resident the rest of his life. June 23, 1940, he married Margaret Stickert in Dighton. He was also a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Scott City.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Darrel L. Stoppel, Lurgen, North Ireland; a daughter, Marcine A. Gorman, Meeker, Okla.; a brother, Duane Stoppel, Scott City; three grandsons; three granddaughters; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Leon.

Friends may visit from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Scott City.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Lyle Struehrenberg officiating. Interment will be in Scott County Cemetery, also in Scott City.

Memorials may be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, in care of the funeral home.

Anna C. (Dwyer) Buhrle

SYRACUSE - Anna C. (Dwyer) Buhrle, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.

She was born June 12,1912, in Meade, the daughter of John (Jack) and Mary Belle (Hamilton) Dwyer.

When she was 1, her family moved to Ellsworth, Neb., and in 1917, they moved to Steville, Alberta, Canada. By 1920, her family settled north of Holly, Colo., where she went to school. Later she worked in the Main Café in Lamar, Colo.

She married her husband, Willis F. Buhrle, Dec. 26, 1935, in Lamar, Colo. He died Nov. 29, 1999.

The same year she was married, she and her husband moved to Coolidge, where they lived until 1942. That year, they moved to the family farm south of Syracuse.

She was a mother and homemaker. She enjoyed making crafts and sewing. She was involved in the Bear Creek Extension Club, the Bear Creek Sunday School and literacy programs.

She was a good cook and enjoyed helping people. She also helped her husband on the farm.

Survivors include a son, Larry Buhrle; one daughter, Patricia Holdren, Faulkton, S.D.; one sister, Beulah Glover, Holly, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a daughter, Geraldine Roberts; a grandson, Matthew Buhrle; three brothers, Martin Dwyer, John Dwyer and Walter Dwyer; and five sisters, Isabelle Tripplett, Ella Dickey, Katie Libertus, Augustus Clifton, and Margaret Dwyer.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST, today at the Greene-Fellers Funeral Home and Monuments, Syracuse. Funeral is 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 409 N. Main St., Syracuse, with Rev. William Fitzgerrel presiding.

Graveside committal service will follow the funeral at Syracuse Cemetery.

Memorials may sent to the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home and Monuments.
