Irene Woodrow

LAKIN - Irene Woodrow, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, in her home in Lakin.

She was born Sept. 14, 1918, in Pratt County to Byron and Mary Francis (Horton) Walker.

She attended school in Pierceville and Ingalls, living in various places in Kansas most of her life.

On Sept. 4, 1934, she married Alvin E. Woodrow at Dodge City. He died July 1, 1993.

She helped her husband with farming and other businesses. She returned to Lakin in 1992.

Woodrow enjoyed traveling, doing crafts and family activities.

She is survived by one son, James Woodrow, Lakin; three daughters, Wanda Davis, Kansas City, Kan., Verna Arnold, Casper, Wyo., and Reva Wilkerson, Wichita; two sisters, Nancy Bishop, Pratt, and Stella Eichenauer, Garden City; 15 grandchildren; and 43 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Joe Byron Woodrow; one daughter, Peggy Ann Woodrow; four brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakin, with the Rev. Franklyn Schroeder officiating. A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Haskell County Cemetery at Sublette.

Visitation will be 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.

Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church in care of the funeral home.

George A. Heier

PARK - George A. Heier, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Gove County Medical Center in Quinter.

He was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Park to John and Mary Heier.

He was raised in Park and attended South Park Rural School. He married Cecilia Heier May 7, 1940, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Park. She died June 11, 1985.

He was a farmer and stockman. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by three sons, Delbert Heier and Jim Heier, both of Park, and Ed Heier, Great Bend; one daughter, Veronica Hemmert, Garden City; one brother, Ted Heier, Park; three sisters, Clara Uhrich, Quinter; Ida Schwarzenberger, Collyer, and Margaret Zerr, Hoxie; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Tony Heier, Nick Heier and Fidel Heier.

Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. today at Schmitt Funeral Home, Quinter. Rosary service is at 7 p.m. Funeral is 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, in Park. Father Mark Berland will officiate.

Internment is at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, Park.

Memorials may be made to masses or the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery Fund in care of Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 S. Main St., Quinter.

Alice M. Hale

KALVESTA - Vigil service for Alice M. Hale, 58, of Kalvesta, will be 7 tonight at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Ingalls. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Mrs. Hale died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Hodgeman County Health Center in Jetmore.

She was born Feb. 6, 1944, at Walker, the daughter of Herbert Wagner and Leona Randa. She graduated from Wichita State University's Beauty School program.

A Kalvesta resident since 1973, she had been employed with the Census Bureau since 1981 and previously had worked at Credit Bureau Services in Garden City. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and the Pawnee Area Ladies Club. A homemaker, her hobbies included quilting, working on puzzles and going to antique stores and auctions.

On Jan. 4, 1964, she married Jerry Hale at Walker. He survives. She also is survived by two sons, Jerrod Hale, Garden City, and Nate Hale, Ulysses; a daughter, Yolanda Rogers, Ulysses; a brother, Bill Wagner, Hays; one grandchild; and two stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Linda Sue.

Visitation hours are until 4 p.m. today at Swaim Funeral Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to the Alice Hale Medical Fund, in care of First National Bank of Cimarron.

LaVera S. Moore McCubbin

LAKIN - Graveside service for LaVera S. Moore McCubbin, 95, of Lakin, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City, with the Rev. David Bolz officiating.

Mrs. McCubbin died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

She was born Oct. 1, 1907, at Tampa, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Kraus Loeppke. She grew up and attended schools in Tampa and Pretty Prairie, graduating from high school in Pretty Prairie.

A Lakin resident since 1942, she was a homemaker and also sold beauty counselor cosmetics for years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Lakin, was instrumental in getting rural telephones to the residents of Kearny County, and did YWCA work in Lakin and Hutchinson. She served as a 4-H leader for many years, belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star and E.H.U. for more than 50 years, and was a member of Social Order of the Beauceant at Newton. She enjoyed club work, cats and making wedding cakes.

On Nov. 26, 1925, she married Emery M. Moore at Kingman. He died Jan. 17, 1966. She married Lonnie McCubbin on Nov. 20, 1976, at Lakin. He died Sept. 6, 1991. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter-in-law; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; and three brothers, John, Harlan and Ferd Loeppke.

She is survived by a son, Billy Moore, Lakin; a daughter, Betty Cole, Lakin; a stepson, Noel McCubbin, Nickerson; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Wiard, Enid, Okla.; a sister, Elnora Ward, Lakin; two brothers, Harold Loeppke, Lakin, and Archie Loeppke, Dubuque, Iowa; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to High Plains Retirement Village, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Karen Joyce Elkins

ELKHART - Funeral for Karen Joyce Elkins, 65, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Church of God, Elkhart, with the Revs. Jim Cunningham, Ron Wilson and Ronald Crosley officiating. Burial will be in Elkhart Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter BF.

Mrs. Elkins died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice Care Center in Wichita.

A lifetime resident of Elkhart, she was born there Aug. 3, 1937, the daughter of Carl and Velma Bingham McClung. After graduating from high school, she received her associate's degree in 1957 from Colorado Women's College, Denver, and later completed a certificate of study from Amarillo Business College.

On Aug. 29, 1958, she married Kent Elkins at Elkhart. They made their home in Elkhart, where he taught in the Elkhart school system and farmed in Morton County. She continued working as a secretary for her father at McClung Land Co., where she remained until she began starting her family.

Mrs. Elkins was a member of First Christian Church, Coterie (Federated Women's Club) and P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter BF. She volunteered with the Morton County Farm Bureau Board, Elkhart Art Association and Morton County Hospital Auxiliary, delivered Meals on Wheels, taught Sunday School, led Vacation Bible School, and was a Band Booster Mom, camp counselor, 4-H advisor and Girl Scout leader. She also was instrumental in helping establish the Elkhart High School Alumni Reunions for which she chaired the organization committee for several years. She and her husband enjoyed traveling.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dennis; two daughters, Reneé and Carla; a grandson; a sister, Linda Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Elkhart. Memorials are suggested to Morton County Library, Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice of Wichita or the donor's choice, all in care of the funeral home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Floyd H. Bjurstrom

LEOTI - Floyd H. Bjurstrom, 85, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Wichita County Long Term Care Unit in Leoti.

He was born July 26, 1917, at Woodruff, the son of Oscar and Fannie Sammons Bjurstrom. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1941.

A farmer, he had been a Wichita County resident since 1945 and a Wichita County Extension agent from 1945 through 1948. He was a member of Christ Covenant Church at Leoti and the K.S.U. Alumni Association at Manhattan.

On Dec. 5, 1942, he married Elma Reuber at Russell. She died April 16, 2000, at Leoti. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and one grandson.

Survivors include two sons, Leo and Wayne, both of Leoti; two daughters, Mary Ellen Schreck, Leoti, and Pamela Gribben, Hays; three sisters, Audrey Hoffman, Earlville, Calif., Drucella Hunter, Portland, Ore., and Viola Calokerinos, Southgate, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Covenant Church, Leoti, with the Rev. Rick Just and Timothy Jaeger officiating. Burial will be in Leoti Cemetery, with military graveside honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are suggested to Wichita County Hospital or the long term care unit, both in care of the funeral home.

Vivian Helene Box Etrick

Vivian Helene Box Etrick, 97, of Dodge City, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.

She was born Sept. 5, 1905, at Kansas City, Mo.

In October 1927, she married Herbert Nahum Etrick at Cameron, Mo. He died Jan. 13, 1992.

Mrs. Etrick was the owner and operator of a women's retail clothing store in Liberal. She had lived in Dodge City before moving to Liberal in 1952. She returned to Dodge City in 1990. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dodge City and the Soroptimist Club, and in the 1980s was a member and state president of Business and Professional Women.

She is survived by two nephews, Paul Etrick, WaKeeney, and Joseph Etrick, Sacramento, Calif.; and three nieces, Karla Poteet, Dodge City, Mary Hanneman, Garden City, and Sara Etrick, Overland Park.

Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.

Friends may sign the register from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at the funeral chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
