Doris Juanita Ham

HUGOTON - Doris Juanita Ham, 93, of Hugoton, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton.

She was born Dec. 3, 1909, at Woodsdale in Stevens County, the daughter of Loyal Luster and Mable Nettie Miller Hogan. A lifetime resident, she was the valedictorian of the class of 1927 of Hugoton High School.

On Aug. 4, 1927, she married Wendell James Ham at her parent's home in Moscow. A homemaker, she also helped her husband with the farm work. He died June 15, 1976. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Vera Frances Ham; a brother, Marvin Miller Hogan; and a sister, Virga Elizabeth Barton.

Mrs. Ham was a member of First Christian Church, had taught Sunday School for many years, was active in the State Farm Bureau, and was a member of the Hugoton Saddle Club, an organization that's first president was her husband. She also belonged to High Point HDU.

She is survived by two sisters, Dessie Wilson and Hazel Timken, both of Hugoton; two nephews; five nieces; five great-nephews; three great-nieces; and 12 great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Hugoton, with the Revs. Jeff Aenk and Larry Bradford officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Margaret L. Hahn

FRIEND - Vigil service for Margaret L. Hahn, 81, will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Hahn died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born March 15, 1921, at Offerle, the daughter of Adam F. and Viola A. Goad Roepka.

A Friend resident since 1941, moving from Kinsley, she recently had moved to Garden City. She was a bus driver and cook for USD 457 and belonged to St. Mary Catholic Church.

On Nov. 22, 1938, she married Laurence C. Hahn at Kinsley. He died June 14, 1997, at Garden City. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Butler; three sons, Norbert, Marion and Stephen Hahn; and three brothers.

Survivors include a son, Leonard Hahn, Friend; five daughters, Mary Predmore, Sun Valley, Nev., Elaine Gross, Salina, Anita Ummel, Garden City, Rose Dixon and Louise Turner, both of Friend; a brother, Bill Roepka, Nickerson; a sister, Betty Scheer, Garden City; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Margaret L. Hahn Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Lewis Mace

Johnson - Funeral for Lewis Mace, 72, of Johnson, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson, with military graveside rites conducted by Johnson VFW No. 3684.

Mr. Mace died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Johnson.

He was born March 15, 1930, at Liberal, the son of Marion and Martha Jane Wheeler Mace.

Mr. Mace was the owner and operator of Sinclair Gas Station and Tire Shop at Johnson, where he also did automotive repair work until a fire destroyed his shop in 1999. After the fire, he continued being active doing some automotive repair work. He enjoyed his work, gardening and tending roses. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp, he served during the Korean conflict.

On Dec. 31, 1955, he married Evelyn Edgar at Kinsley. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Arthur W. Mace, Owasso, Okla., and LeRoy K. Mace, Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Marsha S. Mace, Liberal, and Martha L. Hardin, Cheyenne, Wyo.; a brother, Donnie Mace, Cheney; two sisters, Darlene Mace, Haysville, and Carolyn Fournier, Bartlesville, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Art Card.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.

Leonard L. Mueller

SYRACUSE - Leonard L. Mueller, 83, of Syracuse, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Bartlesville, Okla.

He was born to William and Anna Mueller in Minidoka, Idaho, on Jan. 19, 1919, and moved to western Kansas in 1921. He attended Kearny County country schools and Colorado Springs (Colo.) Bible College.

Mr. Mueller was a member of Syracuse Wesleyan Church, having served on the board and as a Sunday School teacher, as well as serving on the Kansas District Board of the Wesleyan Church. A veteran of World War II, he served in Europe and the Aleutian Islands.

In 1946, he married Ida May Cook and they farmed north of Kendall for many years. She preceded him in death, as did his parents and two siblings.

He is survived by nine siblings; five daughters, Genevieve Springer, Linda Collins, Karen Williamson, Lorna Griffin and Susan Scamihorn; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. MST Friday at the Wesleyan Church, Syracuse. Graveside committal service will follow at Syracuse Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. MST Thursday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Wesleyan Church of Syracuse, Gideon's for Bibles or the World Missionary Press, all in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Claudeane F. Joyce

ULYSSES - Claudeane F. Joyce, 77, of Ulysses, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit, where she had been a resident.

She was born Nov. 6, 1925, at Larned, the daughter of Claude and Lilaha Pryor Bolen. She grew up in Dodge City.

On Sept. 29, 1947, she married Owen Merle Tully. He died in 1965. She married Harry Joyce on May 20, 1983. He died May 27, 2002. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Joyce owned and operated Joyce Tax Service at Ulysses. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, both at Ulysses, and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by two sons, Mark Tully, Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Owen Merle Tully, Satanta; three daughters, Sydney Manderfeld, Evanston, Wyo., Leslie Davis, Durango, Colo., and René DuPree, Hutchinson; two stepsons, Robert Joyce Jr., Aurora, Colo., and Richard M. Joyce, Oakley; a stepdaughter, Rebecca Joyce, Moriarty, N.M.; a brother, James Bolen, Brighten, Colo.; a sister, Lilaha Lea Bolen, Wichita; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Dennis Livingston officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Auxiliary of Ulysses or the Satanta Long Term Care Unit, both in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Shannan Valdez

ULYSSES - Funeral for Shannan Valdez, 33, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Church of Christ, Ulysses, with Warren Baldwin and Galen Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Mrs. Valdez died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at her home in Ulysses.

She was born Dec. 22, 1968, at Ulysses, the daughter of Donald L. and Peggy Watie Phelps, and was a graduate of Ulysses High School.

Mrs. Valdez worked at Grant County Feeders, Ulysses, where she was a pen rider. She was a member of the Ulysses Bit and Spur Club, Little Britches Rodeo, High School Rodeo and the Ulysses 4-H Club.

On Nov. 22, 1996, she married Mike Valdez at Ulysses. He survives. She also is survived by her parents, Ulysses; three sons, Brance Phelps, Bravane Phelps and Brady Valdez, of Ulysses; a stepson, Michael James Valdez, Ulysses; two daughters, Britley Phelps and Sha Ane Valdez, both of Ulysses; a brother, Brandon Phelps, Ness City; a sister, Susanne Phelps, Ulysses; her grandfather, Joe Watie, Jetmore; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jeff Phelps, Dorothy Phelps and Modene Watie.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Garden City Community College Rodeo Team or the Ulysses Bit and Spur Scholarship Fund, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Carlos Herrera Jr.

HUGOTON - Funeral for Carlos Herrera Jr., 69, of Hugoton, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Military graveside service at Hugoton Cemetery will be conducted by the Vets Group of Hugoton.

Mr. Herrera died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, Texas.

He was born Jan. 14, 1933, at Trinidad, Colo., the son of Carlos Sr. and Iola Gregory Herrera.

A Hugoton resident since 1976, moving from Pueblo, Colo., Mr. Herrera worked on a section crew for Santa Fe Railroad for 23 years. He had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

On June 2, 1984, he married Annie Romero at Hugoton. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Curt Herrera, Cerritos, Calif., Robert and Stephen Herrera, both of Garden Grove, Calif.; a daughter, Melody Carpenter, Brea, Calif.; three stepdaughters, Elsie Rivera, Guymon, Okla., Mary Ann Roybal, Hooker, Okla., and Vickey Cordova, Stinnette, Texas; a half brother, Kenneth "Sonny" Doescher, Phoenix; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Rick Herrera, in 1975.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Cancer Fund, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Tiffany Ann Briggs

Vigil service and rosary for Tiffany Ann Briggs, 9, will be 7 tonight at Miller Mortuary, Liberal. Mass of the Angels will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Liberal, with the Rev. Patrick Keyes officiating. Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.

Tiffany, a former area resident, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at her home in Liberal.

She was born June 28, 1993, at Wichita, the daughter of Rod and Michelle Rohn Briggs. She had lived in Ulysses, Parsons and Garden City before moving to Liberal in July 2002. She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Amy and Stacy Briggs of the home; her grandparents, Robert and Gay Beth Briggs of Copeland, and Kenneth and Joyce Rohn of Colby; and her great-grandmothers, Anna Rohn and Rose Mannebach, both of Colby.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Shirley Beth Briggs, in 1999; and two great-grandfathers.

Visitation hours are 4 to 8 tonight at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation or Russell Child Development Center, both in care of the mortuary, 908 N. Lincoln, Liberal, KS 67905.
