Michael Patrick Strickland
Michael Patrick Strickland, 41, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 12, 1961, at San Antonio, Texas, the son of John and Hellen (Pennell) Strickland, where he lived with his family until 1968, when they moved to Garden City. He has lived in Garden City since.
He worked for more than 20 years in oil fields, first for Post and Mastin, then for Hembree Well Service, then Narco and recently for Murfin Drilling. Mr. Strickland enjoyed fishing an spending time with his children.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Blanche and Gus Sherman and Lee and Vivian Dryden.
Survivors include a son, James Edward Strickland, Garden City; three daughters, Kathleen Louise Strickland, Michaele Lee Strickland and Stevie Ann Strickland, all of Garden City; parents John and Hellen Strickland, The Home; three brothers, Jon, Chris and Terry Strickland, all of Garden City; a great-grandmother, Madge Theile of Coffeyville; and four nieces and one nephew.
Funeral service is 2:30 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Caddell presiding.
A private family burial will take place at a later date at Valley View Cemetery
in Garden City.
Memorials may be given to Children's Education Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
Calling hours are noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to service time on Monday, all at Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.
Raymond Glen Burch
LAKIN - Graveside service for Raymond Glen Burch, 81, was to be 10:30 this morning at Lakin Cemetery, with the Rev. Carley Hazelton officiating.
Mr. Burch died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his home in Lakin.
He was born Nov. 22, 1921, at Seneca, N.M., the son of John and Bertha M. Wilder Burch. Growing up in New Mexico, he attended Grandview Rural School through the eighth grade and Seneca Rural High School for the next two years and graduated from Clayton High School in Clayton, N.M.
From the ages of 15 to 26, he worked on large ranch farms in New Mexico. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. In 1947, he began working for Colorado Interstate Gas Co. After 40 years with CIG, he retired in 1986.
He and Joyce Dean Potts were married Feb. 10, 1950, at Raton, N.M. They moved to Lakin in March 1951. His wife died Dec. 4, 2002. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Royce Gene Burch; a daughter, Janice Darlene Burch; and an adopted daughter, Betty June Landis.
While living in New Mexico, Mr. Burch broke and trained horses and also did blacksmithing between his ranch jobs. After moving to Kansas, he did trucking and welding during his time off from the gas company. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lakin, a lifetime member of the VFW, and also belonged to Sunflower Champs R.V. Club and N.R.A.I.L.A.
He is survived by a daughter, Deborah Foster, Garden City; an adopted daughter, Ellen Carpenter, Bassett, Neb.; a brother, Cecil A. Burch, Athens, Texas; three nephews; a niece; two grandchildren; and two adopted grandchildren.

Doris E. Van Horn
Doris E. Van Horn, 80, of Topeka, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at a Topeka care center.
She was born Jan. 4, 1922, at Lawrence, the daughter of James E. and Nyra Mae Helton Crawford, and grew up in western Kansas. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1939 and attended Garden City Junior College for two years.
Mrs. Van Horn was vice president and trust officer for Citizens National Bank in Emporia for 20 years. She then served as courtroom deputy clerk for the federal Magistrate Court in Topeka until retiring in 1993. She was active in the Topeka Shrine Temple and served on its luncheon committee.
In 1946, she married Vance O. Taylor. He died in 1970. On July 30, 1972, she married Edwin "Eddie" Van Horn. He survives. She also is survived by a sister, June Byrd of Wamego.
Funeral was 11 a.m. Nov. 15 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel with burial following at 2:30 p.m. in Maplewood and Memorial Lawn Cemetery
in Emporia.

Dewitt "Dee" Richman
Dewitt "Dee" Richman, 57, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Halsey Hall in Fort Dodge.
He was born May 5, 1945, at Sparta, Wisc., to William Marshall and Irene Louise (Benson) Richman.
The family lived a variety of places, as Mr. Richman's father was in the U.S. Army, before moving to Garden City when he was in junior high. He graduated from Garden City High School in 1964, and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1967. He worked at Farmland Foods and then as a repairman for Fansler Tire Co.
Mr. Richman enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Kansas Chapter of the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Jessie Richman.
Survivors include his wife, Emilia Richman of the home; a son, Jim Richman of Garden City; three daughters, Marlene Otero, Garden City, Dora Leon, Garden City, and Mary Urrutia, Fort Benning, Ga.; his mother, Irene Richman of Scott City; a sister, Darlene Richman of Scott City; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Vigil service is 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. James E. Baker is the celebrant.
Burial will be at Valley View Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Kansas Soldiers Home in care of Garnand Funeral Home.

Max Liedtke
HOLCOMB -- Max Raymond Liedtke, 58, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, near North Platte, Neb., due to injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.
He was born Sept. 6, 1944, at Glasco, the son of Emil and Marie Knight Liedtke.
A resident of Holcomb since 1965 since moving from Glasco, he was the co-owner and operator of the Well Surveys Co. of Hereford, Texas.
He attended the Church of the Nazarene, Garden City.
On June 15, 1968, he married Diane Barlow at Garden City. She died Sept. 29, 1999. Then on Nov. 11, 2000, he married Katherine Middleton DeMint in Oxford. She died in the same accident with Mr. Liedtke.
Survivors include one son, Marshall M. Liedtke, Oklahoma City; one daughter, Chantell D. Freeman of Costa Mesa, Calif.; two step-sons, Todd DeMint of Oxford and Tyson DeMint of Overland Park; one brother, Lowell Liedtke, Dwight; two sisters, Karen Stocks of Wichita and Elaine Thornburg of Claremore, Okla.; and one grandson, Noah Z. Freeman of Costa Mesa, Calif.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Charles West presiding. Inurnment will be at Valley View Cemetery.
There will be no calling times. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Benincasa House in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City.

NicoleHope Rodriguez
NicoleHope Rodriguez, 12, Garden City, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore, from injuries in an automobile accident that day.
She was born Sept. 5, 1990, in Amarillo, Texas, the daughter of Pascual B. Rodriguez, Jr. and Samantha (Gann) Rodriguez. She attended school in Clio, Mich. and was a member of the Michigan Mustang Wrestling Team who went to state three times. She also was a member of the Michigan Mustang Drill Team. Her family moved to Garden City in 2001 from Amarillo.
At the time of her death, she was a sixth-grader at Bernadine Sitts Intermediate Center and a member of the Southwest Grappler Wrestling Team. Her hobbies were wrestling, singing, listening to music, dancing, collecting Tweetie bird items and spending time with family and friends.
She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Pascual B. Rodriguez III and Antonio R. Rodriguez, both of the home; a sister, HopeNicole Rodriguez, of the home; three grandparents, Virginia Gann, Clio, Mich., and Pascual and Maria Rodriguez, Garden City; two great-grandparents, Paula Garcia, Greeley, Colo., and Miguel Rodriguez, Leoti; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, noon to 4 p.m. Sunday and 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
Her funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Garden City, with the Rev. Tim Kersten officiating, and burial will be at Valley View Cemetery
in Garden City.
