Mildred E. Barnard

SCOTT CITY - Mildred E. Barnard, 80, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

The daughter of Marjorie A. West Merica Ruth, she was born March 7, 1922, at the home of her grandparents, Samuel W. and Henrietta C. Ludolph West, near Twin Buttes in rural Logan County. In 1930, she moved with her grandparents to Scott City, where she graduated from Scott Community High School.

In 1941, she married Clellan P. Farr and moved to Wichita, where their son, Gary, was born. She later married Virgil Barnard and resided in Liberal and Crested Butte, Colo., before returning to live in Derby, where she ran All Little Friends Pet Cemetery in partnership with the Wallace family. She chose this occupation because of her lifelong love of animals.

She is survived by her son, Gary Farr, Grain Valley, Mo.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, J.D. Merica of Smyma, Ga., and Ron Ruth, Fanshawe, Okla.; an aunt, Florence Whinery, Scott City; two nieces; two nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and eight cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. Greg Wolf officiating.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. until service time Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society of Wichita, in care of the funeral home.

Leo A. Strasser

Vigil service for Leo A. Strasser, 91, will be 7 tonight at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with Bishop Ronald M. Gilmore and the Revs. Joseph Bahr and John Strasser as celebrants. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Strasser died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 12, 1911, on the family farm south of Cimarron, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Bergkamp Strasser.

A Garden City resident since 1922, moving from Hooker, Okla., he farmed in northern Finney County for 30 years, retiring in 1976. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, France and Germany.

Mr. Strasser was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and a charter member of Knights of Columbus No. 2795.

On Oct. 18, 1944, he married Eleanor "Babe" Hipp at Garden City. She died Jan. 28, 1989. He also was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Michael; five brothers, Ben, John, Lou, Tony and Leonard, his twin brother; and three sisters, Lena Heiman, Martha Gerber and Ann Smith.

He is survived by three sons, the Rev. John Strasser of Medicine Lodge, Mark and Steve Strasser, both of Garden City; a daughter, Mary Sue Strasser, Garden City; and two grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Suzanna Unruh

SCOTT CITY - Suzanna Unruh, 94, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.

She was born Aug. 8, 1908, at Copeland, the daughter of Bernard and Marie Schultz Ratzlaff.

A Scott County resident since 1944, moving from Fredonia, she was a homemaker and belonged to Scott Mennonite Church at Pence.

On Nov. 24, 1928, she married Enoch Unruh at Meade. He died Oct. 26, 1982, at Scott City. She also was preceded in death by her parents, 19 brothers and sisters, and two grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters, Lucille Dirks and Vivian Dirks, both of Scott City; two grandsons; one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Scott Mennonite Church, Pence. Richard Koehn, Charles Nightengale and Ervin Nightengale will officiate. Burial will follow in Scott Mennonite Church Cemetery, Pence.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Scott Mennonite Church or Park Lane Nursing Home, both in care of the funeral home.

Ruby Mae Murphy

SYRACUSE - Ruby Mae Murphy, 86, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at her home in Syracuse.

She was born Aug. 30, 1916, at Noel, Mo., the daughter of Howard William and Anna Mae Cantrell Penn. She attended school in Noel.

On May 25, 1935, she married Roy Allen Murphy at Pineville, Mo. He died July 3, 1982. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Benny Joe Murphy; two brothers, Floyd Howard Penn and Sherman Elijah Penn; a sister, Jane Grace Rosemary Murphy; an infant sister, Bonnie Bell Penn; three brothers-in-law; one grandchild; two sons-in-law; and one daughter-in-law.

A Syracuse resident since 1941, Mrs. Murphy was a homemaker and belonged to the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints at Noel. She enjoyed yard work, crafts, quilting, painting, collecting items such as dolls, camping, fishing, listening to country and western music, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include five sons, Bill and Ted Murphy, both of Syracuse, Charles Murphy of Keller, Texas, Bob and Dwain Murphy, both of Garden City; six daughters, Loretta Wilson of Oklahoma City, Lorene Matthews of Lakin, Imogene "Jo" Coghill and Rosalee Wyatt, both of Syracuse, Ruth McCoy of Loveland, Colo., and Linda Dent, Bringham City, Utah; four brothers, Chester William Penn and Frank Albert Penn, both of Noel, Oscar Powell Penn of Cassville, Mo., and Frank Louis Penn of Mansville, Mo.; three sisters, Virgie Ida Minerva Hobbs of Kansas, Louise Penn Hobbs of Southwest City, Mo., and Frieda Nadine Burnett, Gravette, Ark.; one sister-in-law; 33 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 10 a.m. MST Wednesday at Syracuse Cemetery.

Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight and 3 to 8 p.m. MST Tuesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Mary Margaret Walters

Mass of Christian burial for Mary Margaret Walters, 81, of Manhattan, was to be 10 this morning at Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Manhattan, with the Rev. Lawrence Grennan as celebrant. Private burial will take place later in Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan.

Mrs. Walters died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at her home in Meadowlark Retirement Community, Manhattan.

She was born Feb. 5, 1921, at Garden City, the daughter of William D. and Grace Blake O'Loughlin, and grew up on the family farm at Lakin. She attended Kansas State University and was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

In 1943, she married John A. Walters at Laramie, Wyo., while he was in the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Warren. He died in 1973. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Walters was active in the community and had memberships in the KSU Foundation President's Club, Seven Dolors Altar Society Circle Seven and the Manhattan Country Club. She enjoyed participation in the supper club and several bridge clubs, was an avid K-State sports fan and contributed annually to the Ahearn Club.

She is survived by a daughter, Anne Berniard, Lake Charles, La.; two sons, Jim Walters, Colorado Springs, Colo., and John Walters, Manhattan; a sister, Dorothy Sells, Cincinnati; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Meadowlark Retirement Community or Mercy Regional Medical Center, both in care of Irvin-Parkview Funeral Home, 1317 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan, KS 66502.

June C. Phillips

HUGOTON - Graveside service for June C. Phillips, 83, of Hugoton, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hugoton Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating.

Mrs. Phillips died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.

She was born June 7, 1919, in Stevens County, the daughter of Charles E. and Della G. Greenwood Coulter.

A lifetime resident, she was a bookkeeper for Bob's Body Shop, Parker Brother's Pontiac and Coulter Implement Co., all at Hugoton. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary, taught Sunday School for several years, and was a past matron of Eastern Star, all at Hugoton. She enjoyed spending time with her family, bowling, needlepoint, traveling and fishing.

On June 23, 1940, she married Eldon Phillips at Hugoton. He survives. She also is survived by two sons, Donald K. Phillips and Ronald J. Phillips, both of Hugoton; two brothers, Gilbert H. Coulter and Donald K. Coulter, both of Hugoton; a sister, Eula Mae Peterson, Hugoton; a grandson; two granddaughters; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Stephen E. Coulter and Harold A. Coulter; five sisters, Nellie G. French, W. Blanche Webb, Neva J. Coulter, Margaret V. Coulter and Betty Lou Anderson.

Friends may sign the registry until 8 tonight and 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Gena Tabor Leiker

Rosary for Gena Tabor Leiker, 44, will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Leiker died Thursday, Jan. 16, 2003, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born April 21, 1958, at Garden City, the daughter of Eugene and Beverly Post Tabor. A lifetime Garden City resident, she attended Garden City schools, graduating from Garden City High School in 1976.

On April 23, 1976, she married Arlis N. Wright at Garden City. She worked as a nurse's aide at St. Catherine Hospital, both before and after her marriage. She also assisted in surgery. During the 1980s, she was employed by her father in the plumbing business. She attained her journeyman's plumber license with the City of Garden City.

Due to asthma problems, she resigned from the plumbing business and worked at the Finney County Courthouse as a clerk in the Office of the District Court, working there for 12 years. Later, she worked for private practice attorneys in Garden City. At the time of her collapse due to a severe asthma attack, she was employed by Leroy "Pete" Rose as a legal secretary.

Mrs. Leiker was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed embroidery, decoupage, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.

On May 6, 1996, she married John Leiker at Garden City. He survives. She also is survived by a son, Andrew Wright, Garden City; a daughter, Jennifer Cole of Hazelton; a stepson, Casey Harrison, Deerfield; a stepdaughter, Marietta Leiker, Garden City; her parents, Garden City; a brother, Robert Tabor of Lawrence; and three grandchildren.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
