Jessie A. Dugger

CIMARRON - Jessie A. Dugger, 96, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at Trinity Manor Nursing Home in Dodge City.

She was born Aug. 5, 1906, at Ensign, the daughter of Elbert and Mary Heath Proffitt.

On Sept. 29, 1926, she married Clarence Owen Dugger at Lewis. He died March 23, 1993. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Elbert Proffitt; three sisters, Bessie Evans, Lydia Riley and Laura Mackey; a son-in-law; a granddaughter, Tami Lynn Addison; and a great-granddaughter, Tamsen Lea Whitaker.

A Gray County resident growing up on their family farm, she attended school in Gray County. She then spent most of her adult life at their farm home in western Hodgeman County before moving to Cimarron in 1989, then to Trinity Manor in 1998. A homemaker, she was a member of Kalvesta United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son, Leon Dugger, Kalvesta; a daughter, Deloris Addison, Cimarron; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Cimarron, with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens, Dodge City.

Visitation hours are noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Burkhart-Ziegler Gray County Chapel, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to Kalvesta United Methodist Church, Cimarron United Methodist Church or Trinity Manor Nursing Home, all in care of the chapel, Box 786, Cimarron, KS 67835.

Vickie Darlene Small

Johnson CITY - Vickie Darlene Small, 47, a former resident of Moscow, died Saturday, Jan. 4, 2003, at her home in Johnson City.

She was born Nov. 15, 1955, at Clovis, N.M., the daughter of Lawrence Edwin and Jewel Christene Gatlin Stelzig.

On Aug. 6, 1976, she married Fred Small at Sublette. He died Jan. 28, 2000. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Bobby Stelzig; and a grandson, Eric Small.

Mrs. Small was a licensed practical nurse.

She is survived by a daughter, Kristi J. Van Hooser, Johnson; six sons, Larry Small, Satanta, Charles W. Small, Earl Small and Julian Small, all of North Platte, Neb., Fred Small Jr., Liberal, and Robert Small, Hutchinson; two brothers, Gary Stelzig, Newark, Del., and Ricky Stelzig, Amarillo, Texas; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Moscow Baptist Church, with the Revs. Larry Bradford and Tom Massey officiating. Burial will be in Moscow Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Wednesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. A memorial has been established for the family, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Alice E. Borell

DIGHTON - Alice E. Borell, 78, died Jan. 3, 2003, at Lane County Hospital in Dighton.

She was born July 2, 1924, to Fred and Rosa Galliart in Barton County.

She graduated from Dorrance High School in 1942. She married Everett Steinle in January 1945. He died in 1952. She then married Gene H. Borell June 15, 1957, in Dorrance. Borell and her husband moved to Lane County in 1957.

She cooked for the Alamota School for many years and made baby quilts and blankets for the good Shepherd Home in Kansas City, Mo.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Jay Steinle of Faribult, Minn., and Kent Borell of Dighton; two daughters, Judy Morgan of LaCrosse and Kay Conrady of Dodge City; four sisters, Adalene Charvat of Coffeyville, Bernice Duryee of WaKeeney, Karen Lovelette of Morris, Ill., and Rita Showalter of Mulvane; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral is 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Dighton. Pastor James Webster is presiding.

Burial is 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dorrance City Cemetery in Dorrance.

Memorials may be made to Lutheran Hour of National Autism Research Institution in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Box 891, Dighton, KS 67839.

Manuel D. Torres Sr.

COPELAND - Vigil service for Manuel D. Torres Sr., 55, of Copeland, will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Plains. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Monday at the church, officiated by the Rev. Francis Stuart, O.S.B. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.

Mr. Torres died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born March 21, 1947, at Sabinal, Texas, the son of Juan S. and Francisca C. Deleon Torres.

Mr. Torres had worked for Collingwood Grain in Dodge City for 12 years and was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by three sons, Manuel Torres Jr., Montezuma, Phillip Torres, Hays, and John Torres, Des Moines, Iowa; his mother, Copeland; four brothers, Johnny and Joe, both of Garden City, Frank, Goodwell, Okla., and Raul, Hooker, Okla.; six sisters, Lupe Lara and Asencion Ornelas, both of Copeland, Mary Barnhart, Ingalls, Isabel Martinez, Connie Torres and Rosa Montemayor, all of Sublette; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. A memorial has been established for the family, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Margery A. Murray

Margery A. Murray, 86, died Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born June 2, 1916, at Toulon, Ill., the daughter of Marvin W. and Bessie O. Stonier Murray.

A Garden City resident since 1930, moving from Toulon, for many years she had been a secretary and bookkeeper for Smith Sand Co., and also had worked for several other professional offices in Garden City. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Chapter FF P.E.O., Salamagunda, the Presbyterian Women's Association and several bridge clubs in Garden City.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Esther Murray, a niece, Donna Gigot, and two great-nieces, Michelle Gigot and Jill Mayfield, all of Garden City, a great-great-niece and great-great-nephew.

A memorial service is planned for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Dave Sweley officiating. Inurnment will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Dominga 'Sandy' Esquivel

ULYSSES - Dominga "Sandy" Esquivel, 52, died Jan. 3, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital, Ulysses.

She was born Aug. 4, 1950 in Brownfield, Texas to Marcelino and Geneva Pauda. She lived in Ulysses for 29 years as a homemaker.

She married Homero Esquivel July 27, 1968, in Shallowater, Texas.

She was a member of the Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses and enjoyed playing bingo.

She is survived by her husband, mother, Ulysses; two sons, Homer Esquivel, Jr., Piggot, Ark., and Henry Esquivel, Ulysses; four daughters, Antonia Alvarez, Isabel Esquivel, Angielee Esquivel and Andria Esquivel, all of Ulysses; nine brothers, Jesse Joe Pauda, Lubbock, Texas, Mark Pauda, Robert Pauda, Louie Pauda, Jose Luis Pauda, Angel Pauda, Albert Pauda, Bill Pauda and Sammy Pauda, all of Ulysses; three sisters, Geneva Ramos, Irene Sosa and Irma Panda, all of Ulysses; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Vigil service is 7 p.m. Monday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass is 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church, with Rev. Louis Hoang presiding. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the service Tuesday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Memorials may be given to the Dominga "Sandy" Esquivel Memorial Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Norman J. Thompson

Norman J. Thompson, 86, of Garden City, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

He was born Jan. 5, 1916, in southern Finney County, the son of Charles Bowen and Zippie Ellen "Ella" Chappell Thompson. He attended Plymell School and Meade School.

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to Garden City, where he supervised a chicken hatchery for Swift Company. Later, he worked for the Garden City Co-op as the bulk fuel department manager, enjoying the contacts that this job provided with farmers throughout the area. After retiring from the co-op in 1978, he had more time to enjoy another pleasure - fishing - when he wasn't working as a volunteer for the Senior Center of Finney County.

On March 8, 1940, he married Emma Batchelder at Dighton. She died May 13, 1983. He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Henry Lee Thompson, Carl Thompson and Sammie Thompson; and two sisters, Maud Cooper and Elfa Molher.

In November 1984, he married Edna Philbeck. They enjoyed attending numerous Garden City High School and Garden City Community College sporting events, and especially enjoyed watching their grandchildren play basketball for GCHS. She died July 4, 1989.

Mr. Thompson was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Oddfellows, Optimist Club, American Legion, R.S.V.P. and the Senior Center of Finney County for which he also was a former board member. He was a 4-H leader for years with the Lincoln Livewires, a life member of the Finney County Historical Society, belonged to the Good SAM R.V. Club for 13 years, was a member of Garden City Kennel Club and past board member for four years, and volunteered at GCCC basketball games for several years.

He is survived by a son, Harold Thompson, Ulysses; a daughter, Joyce L. Leonard, Colton, Wash.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Senior Center of Finney County, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.
