Martin T. 'Marty' Hendricks Sr.

ELKHART - Martin T. "Marty" Hendricks Sr., 61, a former Elkhart resident, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City.

He was born Nov. 11, 1941, at Killdeer, N.D., the son of Theodore M. and Anna B. Bosch Hendricks. He spent his early years at Manning, N.D., where he attended schools.

A former resident of Minneapolis, he moved to Elkhart in 1967, living there until moving to Enid, Okla., three months ago. He worked in the oil fields and was a farmer.

Mr. Hendricks was a veteran of the U.S. Army. His special interests included spending time with his grandchildren, working as a mechanic in his spare time, dancing, and taking long drives out in the country.

On June 3, 1968, he married Agnes Forbes at Manning. He married Maxine Acker on Nov. 11, 1988, at Perryton, Texas. Both survive.

He also is survived by a daughter, Starla Anderson of Elkhart; a son, Martin T. "Ted" Hendricks Jr., Enid, Okla.; his mother, Anna B. Wix of Dickenson, N.D.; four stepdaughters, Robin Lane of Corpus Christi, Texas, Kim Gibson of Boise City, Okla., Dorothy Wade of Cherokee, Okla., and Roseanna Winner of Amarillo, Texas; a stepson, Curtis Milburn of Elkhart; a brother, Roger Hendricks of Gillette, Wyo.; a sister, Beverly Olson of Cheyenne, N.D.; five grandchildren; 20 stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Kenny Hendricks; a sister, Loretta Kolar; and a stepgranddaughter, Savannah Ketchum.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Elkhart, with the Rev. Michael McAndrew as celebrant. Burial will take place later.

There will be no visitation. Memorials to the Marion Hendricks Sr. Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Sharon Barlow-Brown

Funeral for Sharon D. Barlow-Brown, 66, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Dodge City Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Mike Burns officiating. Cremation has taken place, with inurnment to be near her family in Oregon.

She died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at her home in Dodge City.

Born in Garden City on April 11, 1936, she was the daughter of James Dallas and Maude Foreman Hawkins. She grew up on a farm outside of Holcomb and attended Holcomb schools.

In 1954, she married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence Barlow. They farmed north of Holcomb. After her husband's death on Feb. 13, 1973, the family continued to farm for a short time before moving to Garden City. She then moved to Junction City, Ore., to be close to her parents and siblings.

In 1992, she returned to Kansas to become the warranty clerk for Goff Motors. During this time, she battled cancer. Several years later, she became the office manager for her daughter's American Family Insurance agency. Retiring in 1998, she moved back to Oregon to be close to her sons. After her cancer returned, she moved to Dodge City to stay with her daughter.

She was a member of Dodge City Church of the Nazarene, and enjoyed volunteering, flower arranging, and cooking for family and friends. She was known for her pies and cinnamon rolls.

Survivors include her daughter, Traci Wentling of Dodge City; two sons, Terry and Mitch Barlow, both of Christmas Valley, Ore.; her mother of Junction City, Ore.; four sisters, Marlette Black, Glenda Evenson and Judi Lesan, all of Oregon, and Vicky Barker of New York; a brother, Jim Hawkins of Oregon; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father and an infant sister.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Dodge City Church of the Nazarene, 1700 W. Ross Blvd., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Swaim Funeral Home of Dodge City is in charge of local arrangements.

Mary Eves Fulton

LAKIN - Mary Eves Fulton, 93, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.

She was born May 11, 1909, at Conquest, a small community in northern Kearny County, the daughter of David L. and Jessie Potter Eves. She attended Lakin schools and graduated from Lakin Rural High School in 1927. She began her college work at Emporia Teachers' College and completed it at Fort Hays State College where she received a bachelor's degree.

Of her 36 years of teaching in Kearny County, five years were in District 18, south of the Arkansas River, and the rest were in the Lakin primary grades. After retiring from teaching in 1971, she spent many winters in South Texas with her husband, Martin D. Fulton, whom she married on Oct. 30, 1945, at Raton, N.M.

Mrs. Fulton was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lakin, Kearny County Teachers Association, Kansas State Teachers Association, National Teachers Association and the Kearny County Historical Society.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews including Phyllis and Paul Hendrix of Lakin, Raymond Eves and Dolly Wasinger, both of Garden City, and Ed Eves of Sublette. Her husband died April 15, 1987. She also was preceded in death by her parents and six brothers, Joseph, David, William, Lucius "Luke," Francis and Jim Eves.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Lakin, with the Rev. FrankLyn Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 508 N. Main St., Lakin, KS 67860.

Joseph M. Scriven

Joseph M. Scriven, 88, of Lamar, Colo., died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Sandhaven Nursing Home in Lamar.

He was born Feb. 24, 1914, in Alfalfa County, Okla., the son of Elmer C. and M. Cordelia Scriven.

He is survived by six children, Lester, Allen and Daniel Scriven, all of Lamar, Ileen Scriven of Irving, Texas, Cleon Scriven of Dallas, and Dee Wayne Scriven of Garden City; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 66 years, Cleo Scriven, who died May 23, 2001; a sister, Lexie Allen of Tucson, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Pamela Dawn Scriven; a nephew; and a brother-in-law.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. MST Thursday at Lamar Christian Church, with the Rev. Ian Blacker officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Lamar.

Visitation hours are from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. to noon Thursday at Valley Memorial Funeral Chapel, Lamar. Memorials are suggested to Lamar Christian Church or the donor's choice, either directly or in care of the funeral chapel, 206 S. Fifth St., Lamar, CO 81052.

Howard D. Campbell

Johnson CITY - Howard D. Campbell, 71, of Lakin, died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born July 24, 1931, at Haviland, the son of Herbert Campbell and Lola Hague Campbell Hudgens. In 1949, he graduated from high school at Johnson City.

A farmer in Stanton County for 44 years, he retired in April 2002. He was a member of Manter Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the VFW, served on the Johnson School Board, Stanton County Farm Bureau Board and Johnson ASCS Board, and was a U.S. Marine during the Korean War.

On Nov. 16, 1958, he married Ruby Carter at Ulysses. She survives. He also is survived by three daughters, Sandra Streckfus of Lakin, Shari Campbell of Hutchinson, and Sally Campbell of Holcomb; two brothers, Richard Campbell of Big Bow, and Jim Campbell of Booker, Texas; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Herb Campbell.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Burial will follow at Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City, with military rites conducted.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City, with the family receiving friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or Cal Farley's Boy's Ranch, both in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North, Johnson City, KS 67855.

George William McIver

SUBLETTE - George William McIver, 65, of Sublette, died unexpectedly Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Satanta District Hospital.

He was born Feb. 2, 1938, at Satanta, the son of Oscar and Alice Harlow McIver.

A lifetime resident of Sublette, he was a mechanic for Allis-Chalmers Farm Supply at Sublette for 36 years. He owned and operated McIver's Used Farm Equipment for 14 years before his retirement.

Mr. McIver was a member of the Christian Church and Alcoholics Anonymous, both at Sublette, and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed playing dominoes at Pride Of Life, and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

On July 2, 1960, he married Marilyn Marie Dunham at Satanta. She survives. He also is survived by three daughters, Jeanette K. McPherson and Sarah L. McIver, both of Garden City, and Clara S. Walker of Sublette; four brothers, James McIver of Buhler, Mark McIver of Satanta, Walter McIver of Cheney, and Vernon "Corky" McIver of Alva, Okla.; a sister, Crystal Parton of Satanta; a brother-in-law; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lester McIver; and a sister, Ella Marie Hazelton.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Christian Church, Sublette, with the Rev. David Erwin officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. A memorial has been established for the family, in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Elden 'Pete' James

DIGHTON - Funeral for Elden "Pete" James, 78, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Revs. Lennie Maxwell and Mike Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Shields Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 190 of Dighton.

Mr. James died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born Nov. 30, 1924, at Healy, the son of William Morris and Ella Francis Eaton James. He attended Shields Grade School, graduated from Dighton High School, and attended Kansas State University for one year before serving with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, stationed mainly in the South Pacific.

After his discharge from the service, he went to KSU for two years and then returned to the family farm in Lane County. A lifelong farmer-stockman, his special interests were the farm, KSU athletics and his grandchildren's activities.

Mr. James was a member of the United Methodist Church, VFW Post No. 6438, American Legion Post No. 190, Order of Eastern Star No. 241 and Barney Masonic Lodge No. 279, all at Dighton, was a 32nd degree member of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, belonged to the Kansas State University Ahearn Club, and served as director of Lane County Feeders and Lane County Health Care Foundation.

On Aug. 10, 1947, he married Marjory Kathleen Craft at Garden City. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Alan and John David James, both of Dighton; three daughters, Marianne Donnelly of Topeka, Kathryn Roehl of Dighton, and Judy Elaine James of Garden City; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one daughter, Sue Ellen James.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to Lane County Health Care Foundation, in care of the funeral home, 145 N. Wichita, Dighton, KS 67839.
