Lenard Fairchild

SCOTT CITY - Lenard Fairchild, 93, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses.

He was born May 22, 1909, in Marshall County, the son of Raymond E. and Alta Estella Bennett Fairchild.

A Scott City resident since the spring of 1920, he moved to Russell Springs in 1943 and returned to Scott City in 1989. He was a farmer and rancher, a member of First Baptist Church of Scott City, and a former 4-H leader of the Good Luck 4-H Club at Russell Springs.

On Aug. 12, 1935, he married Thelma L. Roberts at Scott City. She died April 10, 1971, at Scott City. On April 11, 1991, he married Alice May Williams at Lakin. She died April 15, 1997, at Wichita. He also was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Kenneth, Chester, Claudie, Jess and Owen; five sisters, Theo Lowell, Elsie Verbeck, Viva Miller, June Markham and Jessie McClendon; and one great-grandson, Tony Turley.

He is survived by three daughters, Vada Turley of Scott City, Verla Sanders of Wichita, and Delma Calvin of WaKeeney; a son, Darrell Fairchild, Okmulgee, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith and Robert Fairchild officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Butterfield Trail Historical Museum, in care of the funeral home.

John Burgardt Jr.

Rosary for John Burgardt Jr., 85, of Eunice, La., was 7 p.m. Sunday, with funeral to be 11 this morning at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, New Iberia, La. The Rev. Charles Langlois was to officiate. Burial was to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Burgardt died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003, at Eunice Manor Nursing Home.

A native of Topeka, he had lived in Eunice and was formerly of New Iberia. He was retired from Ashland Chemical Co., with 27 years of service. He was a member of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Community in Eunice for 18 years and had a love for gardening and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Ella Lou (Broussard) Burgardt of Eunice; three sons, Kenneth Burgardt of Ingram, Texas, Daniel and Joseph Burgardt, both of New Iberia; three daughters, Mary B. Smith of New Iberia, Kathy Story of Lafayette, La., and Linda Mouton of Scott, La.; two stepsons, Cedric Mouton of Hidalgo, Texas, and John Clyde Mouton of Scott; a stepdaughter, Mona Siebert of Eunice; three brothers, George Burgardt of Arvada, Colo., Joe and Clarence Burgardt, both of Garden City; two sisters, Rosie Knoll of Garden City, and Sister Virginia Burgardt of Great Bend; 11 grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Louise Frank Burgardt; his parents, John Sr. and Barbara Kippies Burgardt; a daughter, Carol Jean Burgardt; three brothers, Jake, Andrew and Pete Burgardt; and four sisters, Sister Katherine Burgardt, Anna Dreiling, Mary Baier and Helen Urich.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation, South/West Louisiana Chapter, Acadiana Branch, 128 Demanade Blvd., Building IV, Suite 109, Lafayette, LA 70503.

Evangeline Funeral Home at New Iberia is in charge of arrangements.

Flora Bethel (Davey) Joss

HOLCOMB - Funeral for Flora Bethel (Davey) Joss, 88, was to be 2 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Burial was to be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

She died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City.

She was born April 16, 1914, near Holcomb, the daughter of James Frederick and Flora Ellen Luckenbill Davey. She graduated from high school at Parker and also graduated from Emporia Business College.

On Sept. 5, 1936, she married Lyle W. Joss at Topeka. They were wheat farmers north of Holcomb for many years. Mrs. Joss enjoyed raising her children and doing various activities such as music lessons and 4-H. She also enjoyed sewing, reading, music, writing, gardening and raising flowers. In her later years, she lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Yukon, Okla.

Her husband died Dec. 30, 1983. She also was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Lloyd, Don, Roy, Glenn and Avis Davey; and two sisters, Loree (Davey) Lee and Christine (Davey) Coop.

She is survived by a son, Vern C. Joss, Loveland, Colo.; three daughters, Myrna Gay Ramsey of Yukon, Ava Jean Obermueller of Corpus Christi, and Deedra Darlene Miller of Aiea, Hawaii; four grandchildren; and a sister-in-law.

Memorials to the Flora Bethel Joss Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Evelyn Lotton

Evelyn Lotton, 95, died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born May 8, 1907, at Bellflower, Mo., the daughter of Edward A. and Susannah Shelton Phillips. She attended Shelton School in Bellflower and graduated from high school in Bellflower.

On Sept. 4, 1929, she married Harry K. Lotton at Columbia, Mo. They lived in southwest Kansas since their marriage and in Garden City since 1942. She worked as a sales clerk at the Gift Nook for six years, and then at Sweetbriar for 20 years, retiring in 1978 as assistant manager.

Mrs. Lotton was a member of First Baptist Church, Dorothy Kinney Circle, and Order of the Eastern Star, serving as past matron. She was a charter member of Sunflower E.H.U. and sang in the church choir for years. She enjoyed knitting, sports, music and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her husband died Oct. 11, 1993. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Shelton and Willis Phillips; and two sisters, Roma Hodges and Martha Cushman.

She is survived by a son, Richard Lotton, Garden City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Carroll Morony officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ernest 'Ernie' Butler

Ernest "Ernie" Butler, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 20, 1924, in Ford County, the son of Charles A. and Theresa Reinert Butler.

A Garden City resident since 1980, moving from Towner, Colo., he was a farmer and rancher. He retired from Kansas State University Research Center in Garden City in 1990.

Mr. Butler was a former Boy Scout Master, 4-H leader and ASCS committee member. He belonged to Lee Richardson Zoo and worked for USD 457 as a school crossing guard.

On March 15, 1948, he married Marie Burnett at Tribune. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, Donald Butler of Towner, Dale and Doug Butler of Holly, Colo.; a daughter, Virginia Cheely of Bison; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett, Earl and Willis.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. MT Wednesday at Assembly of God Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Mike Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Visitation hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, and 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Tribune. Memorials are suggested to Boy Scouts of America or the Center for Basic Cancer Research, both in care of the funeral home in Garden City, 620 N. Main St.

Billie L. Vickery-Porterfield

Funeral for Billie L. Vickery-Porterfield, 72, of Garden City, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Southern Baptist Church, Liberal, with the Rev. Keith Bryant officiating. Burial will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Memory Gardens in Pampa, Texas.

She died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at Collingsworth General Hospital in Wellington, Texas, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Born March 14, 1930, at Big Spring, Texas, she was the daughter of William and Reva Hamm Hawkins.

She moved from Pampa to Liberal in 1977, to Corinth, Texas, in 1986 and to Garden City in 1990. She co-owned and operated Bruce Well Service, Liberal, until 1987, and was a member of Order of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church, both at Pampa. She enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling and being with her grandchildren.

On June 14, 1947, she married T.J. Vickery at Pampa. He died April 15, 1987. She also was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Coleta Bretthauer.

She married Bill Porterfield on Dec. 1, 1990, at New Mexico. He survives. She also is survived by two daughters, Linda Howe-Chenault of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Jodie Forsyth, Wichita; a brother, James E. Hawkins, Pampa; a sister, Robbie Lynch, Alvord, Texas; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home, Liberal, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home, 1212 W. Second, Liberal, KS 67901.

Harry A. Atherton

He was born May 27, 1912, in Rice County, the son of Frank and Mary Hatfield Atherton.

A Garden City resident since 1948, moving from Wichita, he was the owner and operator of Atherton Real Estate and Insurance Co. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Garden City, a past county commissioner and active on several commission boards. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

On Nov. 4, 1933, he married J. Mearl Atherton at Wichita. She died Dec. 29, 1998, at Garden City. He also was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.

He is survived by three sons, Donald Atherton of Wichita, Robert Atherton of Denver, and Dennis Atherton, Salt Lake City; 12 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Linda Bolz officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with full military honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Johns Nursing Home of Victoria, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
