Bessie Crist

SYRACUSE - Bessie Louise Kerns Crist, 70, a Syracuse native, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at her home in Denver.

She was born April 18, 1932, at Syracuse, the daughter of Leslie and Ethel Kerns. She grew up and attended schools in the areas of Holly, Colo., and Coolidge.

Mrs. Crist worked for many years in the elder care field, and also owned and operated her own beauty shop for several years. She loved to dance, and enjoyed various handcrafts and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Crist of Denver; a daughter, Phyllis Reitz Cameron of Los Osos, Calif.; a son, Ron Reitz of Eaton, Colo.; four grandchildren; and four sisters, Marie Thomeczek and Gladys Triplett of McAlester, Okla., and Ruby Schenck and Janet Sena of Holly. She was preceded in death by two sons, John and Jim Lightner; and her parents.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. MST Thursday at the Christian Church in Syracuse. Inurnment will be in Syracuse Cemetery.

Addison Hathaway

HUGOTON - Addison Everett Hathaway, 88, a resident of Park View Assisted Living in Ulysses and a former Hugoton resident, died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

He was born May 17, 1914, at Stroud, Okla., the son of Lorenzo Hall and Lucy Forrester Hathaway.

On Dec. 31, 1938, he married Helen Maxine Nix at Dewey, Okla. She died March 27, 2003. He also was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lawrence, Elzy and Alva Hathaway; and two infant sisters.

Mr. Hathaway was the owner of Culligan Water Conditioning of Hugoton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge, both at Hugoton. He and his wife enjoyed traveling across the United States and also enjoyed sports.

He is survived by three sons, Gary Hathaway of Ulysses, the Rev. Ken Hathaway of Liberal, and Doyle Hathaway of Olathe; a sister, Veva Simpler of Sonora, Texas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Don Koehn officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Helen Hathaway

HUGOTON - Helen Maxine Nix Hathaway, 84, a resident of Western Prairie Care Home in Ulysses and a former Hugoton resident, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.

She was born April 2, 1918, at Worth, Mo., the daughter of Clarence L. and Hazel M. Costin Nix.

Mrs. Hathaway was a former teacher and had served as office manager for Culligan Water Conditioning. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hugoton and Order of the Eastern Star.

On Dec. 31, 1938, she married Addison Everett Hathaway at Dewey, Okla. He survives. She also is survived by three sons, Gary Hathaway of Ulysses, the Rev. Ken Hathaway of Liberal, and Doyle Hathaway of Olathe; a brother, Paul Nix of Hugoton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Costin Nix; and a sister, Thelma Holt.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Don Koehn officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Madean Heyen

MANTER - Funeral for Madean Heyen, 76, of Manter, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Stafford Cemetery, with Richard Foster and Darrel Murphy officiating.

Mr. Heyen died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born Feb. 13, 1927, at Stafford, the son of Cobus John and Martha Rose Verning Heyen. He graduated from Stafford High School in 1945.

Mr. Heyen served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After moving to Manter in the early 1950s, he became a farmer and rancher. He belonged to the VFW and Stafford Church of Christ and was a former member of the Stafford Farmers Union and FFA.

On Nov. 28, 1959, he married June Tindall at Fort Worth, Texas. She survives. He also is survived by a brother, Orlin Heyen of Stafford; six nieces and nephews; and 12 great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Meryle Heyen.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to Stafford Church of Christ or Fields Memorial Wesleyan Church, both in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.

Mike Yount

Memorial service for Mike Yount, 43, of Loveland, Colo., was 2 p.m. Monday at Church of the Good Shepherd, Loveland. Burial was in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Loveland.

Mr. Yount died Sunday, March 16, 2003, from injuries suffered in a snowmobiling accident in Anchorage, Alaska.

He was born March 30, 1959, at Garden City, the son of Donald E. and Viola M. Bullard Yount. He graduated from high school in Greeley, Colo., and received a bachelor's degree in marketing from Regis University in Denver.

A Loveland resident since 1989, moving from Greeley, he attended Crossroads Covenant Church in Loveland. He was an avid football fan and enjoyed spending time with his family.

On March 5, 1988, he married Chris Gibson in Greeley. She survives. He also is survived by his parents, of Greeley; two sons, Grant and Reed Yount, and a daughter, Abby Yount, all of Loveland; a sister, Debbie Barker of Mead, Colo.; and a twin sister, Mickie McKibbin of Greeley.

Memorials to the Mike Yount Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Allnutt Funeral Service, 2100 N. Lincoln Ave., Loveland, CO 80538.

Tommy E. Smith

ULYSSES - Graveside service for Tommy E. Smith, 71, of Ulysses, will be 2 p.m. CST Saturday at Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. Jerry Hacker officiating.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born June 21, 1931, at Vinita, Okla., the son of James Thomas and Vera Bonnie West Smith.

A Ulysses resident since 1998, he was a former resident of Hamilton County. He farmed until 1979 and then worked for the Kearny County Road Department in Lakin for more than 20 years before his retirement. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and the outdoors.

On Jan. 22, 1955, he married Marilyn J. York at Syracuse. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Andy Smith of Ulysses; a daughter, Tammy Smith of Boise City, Okla.; a brother, James Smith of Vinita; two sisters, Lucille Rame Ballance of Oklahoma City, and Cora Kincade of Vinita; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ralph Smith; and a sister, Bonnie Ruckman.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials in memory of Tommy E. Smith may be sent in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Jose Lopez Garza

HUGOTON - Jose Lopez Garza, 73, of Hugoton, died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Aug. 27, 1929, at Orange Grove, Texas, the son of Eliseo and Paula Lopez Garza.

On Nov. 27, 1951, he married Lidia Flores at Lubbock, Texas. They moved from Lubbock to Satanta, and later lived in Sublette and Liberal before moving to Hugoton nine years ago.

Mr. Garza was a farm laborer working for various farmers in the area. He was a member of First Assembly Of God Church in Hugoton.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons, Joe Luis Garza, Victor Garza and Elias Garza, all of Hugoton, Carlos Garza of Ulysses, and Richard Garza of Cassville, Mo.; two daughters, Shirlee Pineda of Great Bend, and Carolina Bojorquez of Hugoton; four brothers, Juan Garza of Alice, Texas, Alfredo Garza of Ulysses, Rodolfo Garza of Rotan, Texas, and Samuel Garza of Kismet; four sisters, Amelia Trevino, Antonia Carabajal and Ofelia Garza, all of Ulysses, and Senyda Garza of San Antonio; 25 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gilberto Garza; three grandchildren, Victoria Rios, Amanda Rios and Marcos Garza; a sister, Hermina Gonzales; and three brothers, Luis, David and Carlos Garza.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Assembly Of God Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Friday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton. A memorial has been established for the family. Memorials may be sent in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.

Helen M. Bleumer

Vigil service for Helen M. Bleumer, 91, of Dodge City, will be 7 tonight at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Wright. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Robert Schremmer officiating. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Cemetery, Wright.

Mrs. Bleumer, a homemaker, died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.

She was born Feb. 2, 1912, in Ford County, the daughter of Louis A. Lix and Nora M. Schmidt. She grew up in Ford County and graduated from St. Mary's Academy.

A lifetime resident of Ford County, she taught school and was a 4-H leader for many years. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church, Altar Society and the Extension Unit, all at Wright, and belonged to Daughters of Isabella and the Dodge City Council of Catholic Women.

On Aug. 25, 1937, she married William A. Bleumer at Wright. He died Feb. 28, 1994. She also was preceded in death by four brothers, O.B., Cletus, Vernon and Gene Lix; and a sister, Mary Louise Snyder.

Survivors include two sons, Farrel Bleumer of Ingalls, and Maurice Bleumer of Wright; two daughters, Karen Steiner of Overland Park, and Francine Kean of Woodland Hills, Calif.; two sisters, Eunice Shipley of Dodge City, and Elinor Mellard of Kansas City, Kan.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 5 p.m. today at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to the Sacred Heart School Endowment Fund or St. Andrew School Memorial, both in care of the funeral home.
