Michelle Dawn Polson

Michelle Dawn Polson, 29, of Independence, Mo., died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at Gardner, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. The accident also took the life of her husband, Timothy, who was a former Garden City resident.

She was born Nov. 20, 1973, at Goodland, the daughter of Michael and Pauline Fallis. She graduated in 1992 from Lucas-Luray High School, where she was an academic scholar, and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and criminal justice.

On Feb. 2, 2002, she married Timothy Jake Polson.

Mrs. Polson was employed by the Johnson County Department of Corrections as a case manager and was a member of the United Methodist Church of Luray. She enjoyed spending time with her niece and nephews and playing Frisbee golf with her husband, brother and sister-in-law.

She is survived by her parents, Luray; a brother, Warren Fallis of McPherson; a sister, Tamsel Sharp of Oak, Neb.; her grandparents, Paul and Mildred Autenrieth of Salina, and Veola Fallis of Luray; a niece; two nephews; and several aunts, uncles and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Denzil Fallis.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Luray United Methodist Church, with burial at Vincent Cemetery in rural Luray. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Garden City.

Memorials are suggested to the Michelle Fallis Polson Scholarship Fund or the United Methodist Church of Luray.

Vicki Halbleib Landaal

Vicki Halbleib Landaal, 53, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 25, 1950, at Garden City, the daughter of Lawrence and Maxine Duvall Halbleib. She grew up in Garden City, and attended grade school and high school here.

A Salt Lake City resident for several years, she will be remembered for her laugh and her love of fishing, cooking and a good book.

She is survived by a son, Michael Scott Gimple, Salt Lake City; her mother, Garden City; a brother, Steve Halbleib, Shawnee; a sister, Pat Halbleib Wade, Lenexa; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; a daughter, Michelle Bradley; and a brother, Gordon Halbleib.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from 1 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Velma M. Young

Velma M. Young, 75, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Oct. 17, 1927, at Brickeys, Mo., the daughter of Floyd J. and Stella M. Garris Douglas.

A Garden City resident since 1991, moving from Festus, Mo., she had been a district manager for Beltone Audiology. She was a member of Bible Christian Church of Garden City.

On June 8, 1946, she married Alfred "Jack" Young at Festus. He died Nov. 15, 1980, at St. Louis. She also was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

She is survived by a son, Alfred "Jack" Young of Festus; a daughter, Linda Rose of Garden City; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at Bible Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Mark Ingmire officiating. Additional services will be conducted in Festus, with burial at Methodist Cemetery in Festus.

There will be visitation. Memorials to the Velma M. Young Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Bernice Roberts King

ULYSSES - Bernice Roberts King, 89, of Ulysses, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

She was born July 17, 1913, at Syracuse, the daughter of Leslie and Gertrude Hixon Roberts. She grew up in Syracuse and graduated from high school there.

A Ulysses resident for 69 years, she was a homemaker. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.

On July 7, 1934, she married Leslie D. King at Syracuse. He died May 25, 1995. She also was preceded in death by a son, Dennis King; two brothers, Marvin and Lewis Roberts; and a sister, Ethel Tope.

She is survived by a son, Charles King of Castle Rock, Colo.; a daughter, Marilyn Randle of Ulysses; a brother, Jack Roberts of Syracuse; three sisters, Pearl Rector and Grace Helm, both of Syracuse, and Phoebe Reid of Garden City; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Dora Maxwell

Dora Maxwell, 86, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born Aug. 26, 1916, at Collinsville, Okla., the daughter of John T. and Florence Voss Mathews. She grew up in Collinsville and attended schools there.

On March 28, 1938, she married Kenneth T. Maxwell at Nowata, Okla. They moved to Garden City in 1948.

Mrs. Maxwell worked as a cashier at the State Theatre for 24 years, retiring Sept. 29, 1981. She was a member of First Baptist Church, and belonged to the church circle and Keystone Sunday School class. She also was a member of the Senior Center of Finney County, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the AARP. She enjoyed playing cards, and spending time with her family and friends.

Her husband died Nov. 3, 1968. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Sue Gies and Barbara Page; two brothers; five sisters; and two half sisters.

She is survived by a son-in-law, John Gies of Garden City; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Carroll Morony officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Emojean A. 'Jean' Sanders

Emojean Alice "Jean" Sanders, 79, of Lancaster, Calif., died Wednesday, March 26, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

Born Emojean Shull on Oct. 21, 1923, in Deerfield, she was the youngest of 14 children. She grew up on a farm, married at age 16 and become a homemaker. Her husband of 56 years, Benjamin Ross Sanders, died in 1996.

Mrs. Sanders had lived in Lancaster since 1976. She was known for her love and dedication to her family and for her sense of humor.

She is survived by three daughters, Judi McMurtrey of San Dimas, Calif., and Pat Moore and Jeanette Tigert, both of Lancaster; two sons, Jim Sanders of Fontana, Calif., and John Sanders of San Dimas; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Elnora Smith of Manteca, Calif., and Faye Kraft of Deerfield. She also leaves behind her friend and caregiver, Joanne Ustares and her husband Ben.

Funeral was 3 p.m. March 31 at Joshua Memorial Park & Mortuary in Lancaster.

Ronald L. 'Ron' Ullom

MONTEZUMA - Ronald Lee "Ron" Ullom, 42, of Wichita and formerly of Montezuma, died Friday, April 25, 2003, in Wichita.

He was born June 25, 1960, at Dodge City, the son of Ira Lee and Marlene Blackwelder Ullom. In his early childhood, from 1962 to 1974, he lived in California.

Mr. Ullom was a farm laborer and did construction work. He had previously resided in Montezuma and Salina, attended the United Methodist Church, and loved his family and friends. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping and fishing.

He is survived by a son, Jonas Lee Ullom of Scott City; a daughter, Ginger Leann Ullom of Salina; his parents, Montezuma; a sister, Rhonda Sue Ullom of Wichita; and several uncles, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ira B. and Mary Sue Ullom, and Jacob Ira and Velda Menzie Blackwelder Monninger.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Montezuma, with the Rev. Dick Robbins officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Montezuma.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Urban Ministry Outreach at Wichita, in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Loren E. Whipps

Loren E. Whipps, 92, died Thursday, April 24, 2003 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. Born February 16, 1911, in Belleville, he was the son of Edgar and Lorhetta Mosher Whipps.

He graduated from Belleville High School. He was a teacher and farmer, as well as a graduate of Kansas State University and Colorado State University.

He volunteered for the U.S. Navy Air Corps, serving four years in World War II as a Chief Petty Officer.

He served eight years as KSU Area Extension Economist and two years as Southwest Kansas Area Extension 4-H Specialist in Garden City.

After retirement in 1976, Mr. Whipps taught at Garden City Community College and served for 12 years as a substitute teacher at USD 457.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Tyrian Masonic Lodge, Rotary Club, Midian Shrine Temple of Wichita, Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension Professional Fraternity, Kansas State University Alumni Association, Garden City Horticulture Club, and Garden City Kennel Club.

On June 21, 1953, he married Lucille Rosenberger in Greensburg. She survives. Other survivors include one brother, Leonard W. Whipps.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Quincy Whipps.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Linda Bolz officiating. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City.
