Venna E. Holmes

Graveside service for Venna E. Holmes, 88, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with Dr. Richard P. Frederick officiating.

Mrs. Holmes died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Shawnee County, the daughter of Peter and Lenora B. Fogerty Blocher. In 1916, the family moved to Finney County where they farmed. She attended rural schools through the eighth grade.

On Feb. 19, 1931, she married Johnnie Holmes at Cimarron. They farmed south of Garden City until moving into town to retire in 1970. He died in August 1971. She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Alfred, Dewitt, Lee and Jess Blocher; four sisters, Gladys Cox, Lina Brindlow, Sally Sinclair and Vivian Argyle; a daughter, Lenora M. Johnson; a son, Aubrey G. Holmes; and a grandson.

Mrs. Holmes loved to quilt and sew, and sewed most of her children's clothes. She also loved gardening and picking sandhill plums, canning the produce and making jelly for her family. She was proud to be a homesteader's daughter.

She is survived by three sons, Johnnie Holmes Jr., Garden City, Clyde U. Holmes of Ingalls, and Donald V. Holmes of Holdrege, Neb.; two daughters, Erma M. Faulconer and Jean Bennett, both of Garden City; 19 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association or Gideons International, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ervin E. Henry

Funeral for Ervin E. Henry, 83, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Assembly of God Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Ray Holman officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.

Mr. Henry died Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 10, 1919, at St. John, the son of Lester A. and Minnie I. Baker Henry.

Mr. Henry had worked for Carson Machine Supply in Great Bend for more than 20 years before moving to Garden City in 1957. He continued working for the supply company until 1964 when he founded Henry's Irrigation Engine Service, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1982.

He was a member of Assembly of God Church, and a lifetime member of John J. Haskell VFW Post No. 2279, Harry H. Renick American Legion Post No. 9 and the Senior Center of Finney County, all at Garden City. He also belonged to the AARP and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On May 24, 1941, he married Doris E. Haynes at Macksville. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Ervin "Jim" Henry of Garden City; a daughter, Judy Young of Tribune; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Hospice, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Lorraine Pearce McCarty

Lorraine L. Pearce McCarty, 89, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Oct. 2, 2002.

She was born May 27, 1913, at Cherokee, the youngest of four children born to Gertrude E. Wiles and Wilber O. Ester.

On Dec. 16, 1931, she married Marion R. Pearce. He died in 1953. In 1955, she married C.E. McCarty. He died in 1982. She also was preceded in death by a son, Robert M. Pearce; and a grandson.

Born and raised in Kansas, Mrs. McCarty played the flute, sang in a choir and enjoyed traveling. She had lived in Garden City from 1930 to 1969. While in Kansas, she worked in insurance, rentals, advertising sales and Girl Scouts. After many years of visiting her cabin in Green Mountain Falls, Colo., she moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., full time in 1969 and had lived at the Satellite since 1972. She owned Norton Shoes until 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Phyllis L. Breeding of California; a son, James R. Pearce of Wichita; a stepson, Gregory McCarty; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service was conducted Oct. 5 in Colorado Springs. A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.

Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.

Betty 'Jean' Moshier

Betty "Jean" Moshier, 74, of Garden City and formerly of Amarillo, Texas, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, in Wichita.

She was born Nov. 22, 1928, at Amarillo, the daughter of P.D. and Maude Mitchell Allgood.

For much of her life, Mrs. Moshier was employed in various banks across the state of Kansas. In later years, she became a hostess at the Garden City Plaza Inn.

On Nov. 10, 1942, she married Homer M. Cravens. He died June 21, 1960. She also was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Vernon and Ray Don Allgood. She later married William D. Moshier.

She is survived by a son, Johnny Cravens of Garden City; two daughters, Sandra Droste of Wichita, and Vickie Webster of Cedar Hill, Texas; a sister, Johnnie Faye Rosenbaum of Farmington, N.M.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graveside service was to be 2 p.m. today at Llano (Texas) Cemetery, with Dr. Paul Richardson officiating.

Schooler Funeral Home, Amarillo, was in charge of arrangements.

Irene Stonestreet

Irene Dorn Stonestreet, 92, of Pratt and formerly of Cullison, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at Friendship Manor in Pratt.

She was born March 27, 1911, at Cedar Vale, the daughter of Orville Wells and Ruth Ann Grounds.

A homemaker, she had been a lifetime resident of the Cullison area. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pratt.

On April 27, 1929, she married Dale Stonestreet at Newkirk, Okla. He died June 24, 1963. She also was preceded in death by a son, Gary Stonestreet; and two brothers, Millard and Delbert Wells.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald Stonestreet of Garden City, and Arlie Stonestreet of Cullison; a daughter-in-law; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Ayres-Calbeck Mortuary, Pratt. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Pratt, with the Rev. James Dieker officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, Cullison.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to Sacred Heart School or South Wind Hospice, both in care of the mortuary, 115 E. Fourth, Pratt, KS 67124.

Larrell 'Larry' Harkness

Larrell Evern "Larry" Harkness, 68, died Tuesday, April 22, 2003, in Dodge City.

He was born Dec. 29, 1934, at Florence, Colo., the son of Lloyd Everet and Gladys Elizabeth Noble Harkness. His parents returned to Scott County to try to acquire land of their own to farm. After living a short time in an old box car, the family settled in on the Scott/Finney County line with three quarters of land to their name. He enjoyed working with his father, learning many skills such as welding, flying airplanes and various farming techniques.

After graduating from Scott County High School in 1954, he met Phyllis Jean Bodam while at a skating rink in Garden City. They were married on July 1, 1956, shortly after her graduation from high school. They then moved to his father's farm and the home of his childhood.

A farmer, Mr. Harkness loved his work and the creativity he used when building and fixing things. He and his family enjoyed a variety of animals, many vacations and camping excursions, boating, bowling and skating. He attended Faith Baptist Church of Garden City.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Klent and Donald Harkness, both of Wichita, and Timothy Harkness of Garden City; three daughters, Cheri Van Vleet of Garden City, Debbie Morton of Dodge City, and Janell Brown of Sea Tac, Wash.; a brother, Rex Harkness of Scott County; a sister, Gwen Thatcher of Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Darla Rose.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Lakin Cemetery. The Rev. Pat Nath will officiate.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Faith Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home.

Eddie Lewis Wise

ULYSSES - Eddie Lewis Wise, 54, of Ulysses, died Monday, April 21, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 4, 1948, at Walsh, Colo., the son of James Windol and Otehka P. Caudle Wise.

On Feb. 18, 1978, he married Wanita G. Lucas at Ulysses.

Mr. Wise worked for British Petroleum, was a member of Free Will Baptist Church and Charles B. Hart Post No. 79, both at Ulysses, and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He enjoyed spending time with his family, loved to visit with people and was involved with the youth at his church. He coached ball games, including boys and girls basketball and traveling teams, for 14 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Jeremiah Windol Wise and Jason James Wise, and a daughter, Jessica Evelyn Otehka Wise, all of Ulysses; his mother, Ulysses; three brothers, James "Buddy" Wise and Larry Joe Wise, both of Ulysses, and Michael R. Wise of Midall, Okla.; a sister, Jerilyn Kaye Foncannon of Centerville, La.; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father; two nephews; two nieces; and one great-niece.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Church Of Christ, Ulysses, with the Revs. James Green, Warren Baldwin and Mike Holman officiating. Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Charles B. Hart Post No. 79.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today through Friday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the Children's Education Fund, Cancer Fund or Grant County Recreation (for baseball), all in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Chloris A. Sorenson

Chloris A. Sorenson, 89, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at her home in McPherson.

She was born June 18, 1913, at Concordia, the daughter of Edward E. and Nellie Logan Grout.

A McPherson resident since 1928, she was a retired teacher and a homemaker. She belonged to Free Methodist Church, Home Improvement Club and the McPherson Area Retired Teachers Association.

On June 18, 1935, she married Maurice Sorenson in McPherson. He died Nov. 8, 1994. She also was preceded in death by a son, David.

Survivors include three sons, Lynn Sorenson of Kansas City, Kan., Gayle Sorenson of Houston, and Donald Sorenson of Holcomb; two brothers, Dean Grout of Aiken, S.C., and Elmer Grout of Aurora, Colo.; a sister, Marguerite Armstrong of McPherson; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday at Free Methodist Church, McPherson, with the Revs. Michael Hambley and Tom Mayse officiating. Burial was in McPherson Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Central Christian College of Kansas or Free Methodist Church, both in care of Stockham Family Funeral Home, 205 N. Chestnut, McPherson, KS 67460.
