L.E. 'Whitey' Whitesell

TRIBUNE - L.E. "Whitey" Whitesell, 87, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at St. Joseph Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born March 6, 1916, at Milan, the son of Joseph and Georgie Fulkerson Whitesell.

A Greeley County farmer since 1949, he had lived in Arcadia, Fla., since 1980.

Mr. Whitesell was a World War II veteran.

On March 29, 1949, he married Betty Gibson at Raton, N.M. She died in 1978 at Tribune. He also was preceded in death by one brother and one grandchild.

Survivors include a daughter, Lavetta Korf of Lincoln, Neb.; two sisters, Jeanne Sears of California, and Mary Lou Maltoni of Virginia; and two grandchildren.

Funeral was in Arcadia with a private graveside service to take place later in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Memorials are suggested to the Greeley County Boy Scouts, in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, Box 161, Leoti, KS 67861.

Jerry L. Sullivan

ULYSSES - Jerry L. Sullivan, 74, of Ulysses, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.

A celebration of life service will begin at 7 tonight in the South Room of the Grant County Civic Center in Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Louis Hoang officiating. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery.

Mr. Sullivan was born Dec. 10, 1928, at Hickok, the son of Jeremiah P. and Goldie A. Warner Sullivan. He graduated from Grant County Rural High School in 1947.

A lifetime resident of Ulysses, Mr. Sullivan was involved in the family grain business and was a rancher. He was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and served on the board of directors of Sullivan Inc., Grant County Bank, St. Mary's of the Plains and the Grant County Fair Board. He was involved in rodeo, belonged to the PRCA, and devoted his life to many humanitarian causes.

On Oct. 13, 1953, he married Phyllis Torline, with whom he had nine children. On Aug. 1, 1987, he married Leta M. Browder at Colorado Springs, Colo. She survives. He also is survived by three sons, the Rev. Tim Sullivan of Hillsboro, Barry Sullivan of Overland Park, and Keric Sullivan of Ulysses; six daughters, Michele Seeley of Bartlesville, Okla., Marieta Hauser, Marianne Hamer and Maureen Meierhoff, all of Ulysses, Marcia Sullivan of Santa Fe, N.M., and Mona Hooper of New Brockton, Ala.; two stepsons, Jerry and Monte Morrell, both of Pinedale, Wyo.; a stepdaughter, Tammy Burdzinski of Yorkville, Ill.; two brothers, Dr. William R. Sullivan of El Paso, Texas, and Michael P. Sullivan of Las Cruces, N.M.; 23 grandchildren; and 11 stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Dr. Tom Sullivan and James H. Sullivan; and two sisters, Florence Sullivan George and Peggy Sullivan.

Visitation hours are until 5 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to Western Prairie Care Home or Grant County Museum, both in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.

Marie Winget

Marie Winget, 81, of Jetmore, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center in Jetmore.

She was born Aug. 4, 1921, at Novelty, Mo., the daughter of Martin and Nellie Haskin Hunsaker.

A longtime resident of the Jetmore area, she was a homemaker and belonged to the Baptist faith.

On Dec. 31, 1939, she married Norman Winget at Novelty. He died Oct. 29, 1997.

She is survived by a son, Larry Winget of Hugoton; a daughter, Karen Klinge of Garden City; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Jetmore, with the Revs. Gary Winget and Mark Durham officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore.

Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at Beckwith Funeral Home, Jetmore. Memorials are suggested to Hodgeman County Long Term Care Center, in care of the funeral home, Box 663, Jetmore, KS 67854.

Carolyn Ann Burns

SYRACUSE - Carolyn Ann Burns, 52, died Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.

She was born Sept. 4, 1950, at Monroe, Mich., the daughter of Franklin and Helen S. Bonavia Richardson. She attended Ann Arbor (Mich.) High School.

A Syracuse resident since January 1995, she previously resided in Colorado and also had lived and traveled in Europe. She had worked at Roy's Jack and Jill grocery store in Syracuse, at the Social Rehabilitation Service in Pueblo, Colo., and as head cashier at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. She often referred to herself as a "domestic engineer."

On Jan. 1, 1995, she married Bobby Burns at Syracuse. They enjoyed going fishing. She also enjoyed going shopping with her many friends, bowling, collecting various items including Hummel statues and Elvis Presley keepsakes, and having her family over for holidays, with Christmas being her favorite.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Paul Richie Nesbitt Jr. of Spokane, Wash., and Franklin Nesbitt of Las Vegas; two daughters, Denice Richardson of Las Vegas, and Roberta Fitzgerald of Holdenville, Okla.; two stepsons, Marlin Burns of Indianapolis, Ind., and Shawn Burns of Fort Benning, Ga.; a stepdaughter, April Largent of Las Vegas; two brothers, James Richardson of Louisville, Ky., and Kenneth Richardson of Bristol, Colo.; four sisters, Myra Hafics of Syracuse, Cathie Parks and Linda Halstead, of Pueblo, and Judy Hieneman of Woodville, Wash.; 20 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. MDT Saturday at First Christian Church, Syracuse.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home & Monuments, Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.

Forrest 'Joe' Cameron

ELKHART - Memorial service for Forrest L. "Joe" Cameron, 77, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Church of God, Elkhart, with the Rev. John Morden officiating.

Mr. Cameron died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.

He was born May 25, 1925, at Enid, Okla., the son of Ora F. and Velma Burns Cameron. He grew up in Enid, where he attended school and graduated from high school.

On July 23, 1945, he married Helen Barr at Alva, Okla. In 1961, the family moved to Elkhart. He worked as a custom cutter for 25 years, working fields starting at Olney, Texas and continuing to Hettinger, N.D. For the past 37 years, he and his wife have been the owners and operators of Cameron Implement of Elkhart, where he has remained self-employed and continued operating the business until recent health problems. His special interests included playing cards and reading Louis L'Amour books.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Brian Cameron of Elkhart; a daughter, Candise McDonald of Rolla; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert "Bobby" Cameron; and a brother-in-law.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Shriner's Hospital for Children or the Whistle Stop Park, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Arlyn J. Seba

Arlyn J. Seba, 77, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at his home in Garden City.

He was born March 9, 1926, at Rozel, the son of Johann Henry and Louise Fredricka Josefiak Seba. He grew up in Rozel and graduated from Rozel High School.

After serving in the U.S. Army and being stationed in Germany during World War II, he moved to Larned. In 1959, he moved to Garden City to become the manager of Scheuffler Supply. He opened Circle K Auto Parts in Garden City in 1965, and opened Automotive Parts & Equipment Co. in 1979.

Mr. Seba was a lifetime member of John J. Haskell VFW Post No. 2279 of Garden City. He enjoyed being around his grandchildren, his cabin in Colorado, fishing, boating and traveling.

On May 18, 1946, he married Marjorie Louise Franz at Great Bend. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Franz and Kent Seba, both of Garden City; a sister, Opal Andrews of St. John; a brother, Wayne Seba of Denver; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Erwin, Raymond and Leonard.

Funeral will be 9 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Stuehrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with graveside rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Victory in the Valley or St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Lois P. Von Hemel

She was born Aug. 5, 1919, at Wabash, Ind., the daughter of Ross and Josephine Goodboo Watson. She attended Seneca Indian School in Wyandotte, Okla.

Mrs. Von Hemel was known for making the best fried chicken in southwest Kansas at the cafe she owned and operated, the Manter Cafe. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Manter, enjoyed square dancing and horse racing, and was honored to have been chosen as a Pioneer Day Queen.

On Dec. 11, 1939, she married Henry Von Hemel at Syracuse. He preceded her in death as did three sisters, Clorine Watkins, Betty Jean Watson and Alta Von Hemel; and two brothers, Ross Watson Jr. and Bobby Lee Watson.

She is survived by two sisters, Mildred Walker of Manter, and Joan King of Turpin, Okla.; five brothers, Paul Thomas and Billy Dale Watson, both of Miami, Okla., James Farrell of Albuquerque, N.M., Jerry Watson of Elgin, Okla., and Jack C. Watson of Holly, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Velda "Butch" Creamer of Manter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Manter, with the Rev. Kevin Seuser officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. On Sunday evening, the family will greet friends at the Manter Cafe.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.
