Bernadette Gardiner

Rosary for Bernadette "Berny" Gardiner, 73, of Wichita and formerly of Garden City, will be 7 tonight at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Wichita. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Gardiner, who had worked as a nurse anesthetist for Halstead Hospital, died Saturday, April 12, 2003.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Robert "Bob" Gardiner, Wichita; two stepsons, Tom Gardiner of Richmond, Va., and Mike Gardiner of Peculiar, Mo.; three stepdaughters, Kaye Hahn of Fort Collins, Colo., Susan Clayton of Mullinville, and Bonnie Hagen of Peculiar; a brother, Jim Neville of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; two sisters, Phyllis Simpson of Innisfail, Alberta, Canada, and Sister Marguerite Neville of Chatham, Ontario, Canada; 16 stepgrandchildren; and 14 stepgreat-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Guadeloupe Clinic and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, in care of DeVorss Flanagan-Hunt Mortuary, Wichita.

Dorothy D. Dale

Dorothy D. Dale, 96, a former Garden City resident, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at the Life Care Center in Wichita.

She was born March 4, 1907, at Coldwater, the daughter of George W. and Nellie Haynes Dale.

A longtime resident of Hutchinson, formerly of Garden City, she was a music teacher in the USD 308 Hutchinson schools for more than 42 years, retiring in 1972. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in music education from Kansas State University.

Mrs. Dale was a member of First Congregational Church of Hutchinson, Hutchinson Music Club, Polyphonic Music Club, Tri Delta Sorority at KSU and Mu Phi Epsilon.

She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins, including nephews Jim Dale of Lakin and Roger Dale of Wichita.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. May 3 at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association, in care of Johnson & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory, 300 E. 30th Ave., Hutchinson, KS 67502.

George Ernest Kifer

SCOTT CITY - Graveside service for George Ernest Kifer, 95, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating.

Mr. Kifer died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Dec. 7, 1907, at Beverly, the son of George A. and Lily Schmidt Kifer.

A Scott City resident since 1934, he worked for Lee Hardware Co., Salina, for 42 years and served as city clerk of Scott City for 3 1/2 years before his retirement. He was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City and belonged to the Eagles Lodge at Garden City.

On Dec. 22, 1935, he married Martha Brock Kifer at Scott City. She survives. He also is survived by a son, C. James Kifer of Hays; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Francis and Harry.

Visitation hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.

Dr. M.D. Niedens

Funeral for Dr. M.D. Niedens, 73, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Dave Sweley officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Dighton Cemetery, with military and Masonic graveside rites conducted.

Mr. Niedens died Monday, April 14, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born May 31, 1929, at Dighton, the son of Johnnie A. and Martha E. Bathurst Niedens. He graduated from Dighton High School, Palmer College of Chiropractic and John Thomas College of Naturopathic Medicine.

A Garden City resident since 1952, moving from Orange County, Calif., he was the owner and operator of Niedens Chiropractic Clinic in Garden City.

Mr. Niedens was a member of Tyrian Masonic Lodge and the Elks Lodge and was a former YMCA Board member, all at Garden City. He was the past president of the Kansas Chiropractic Association, a member of Midian Shrine Temple of Wichita, and served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict.

On June 10, 1989, he married Peggy S. Baker at Las Vegas. She survives. He also is survived by a son, M.D. Niedens II of Salina; four daughters, Dawn L. Milner of Derby, Pamela Schremmer of Manhattan, Sheryl Adams of Soloman, and Tina Leister of Salina; a brother, Dr. M.E. Niedens of Scott City; a sister, Alverta Fiscus of Rolla, Mo.; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. M.A. Niedens.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Tyrian Masonic Lodge, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.

Fannie A. Stull

SCOTT CITY - Fannie A. Stull, 81, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

She was born July 25, 1921, at St. John, the daughter of John M. and Fannie M. Woods Cooper.

A Scott City resident since 1952, moving from New Mexico, she worked for Duckwalls in Scott City until her retirement and was a homemaker. She belonged to First Baptist Church of Scott City.

On Sept. 7, 1940, she married Samuel C. Lewis at Bolivar, Mo. She married Paul M. Stull on Feb. 23, 1952, at Scott City. He died Jan. 6, 1991, at Scott City. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Cooper; and a granddaughter, Deanna Wadkins.

Survivors include two sons, Clay Lewis of South Hutchinson, and John Lewis of Abbyville; two daughters, Janice Robins of Sciota, Pa., and Joyce Dearden of Scott City; three stepdaughters, Beth Lile of Gentry, Ark., Arlene Birney of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Pauline Sculley of Emporia; three sisters, Jessie Conklin of Loveland, Colo., Nellie Stotts of Longmont, Colo., and Sylvia Teichmann of Hudson; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating.

Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital, Scott County Home Health, Scott City Clinic or Scott County Health Department, all in care of the funeral home.

Michael D. Rhodes

Michael D. Rhodes, 57, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, after a short illness at Rapid City Regional Hospital in Rapid City, S.D.

He was born June 22, 1946, the son of Guy Alger and Alph Mae Rhodes. He attended high school in Garden City and attended automotive school in Denver.

Mr. Rhodes worked as a welder at Oswalt and C & S Cattle. His hobbies included art, music, automobiles and motorcycles.

He married Donna Moore in 1967. They later divorced.

He is survived by four children, Michael Rhodes, Misty Wishon and Carmen Rhodes, all of Rapid City, and Dustin Rhodes of Garden City; a sister, Vera Mae Porter of Garden City; a brother, Terry Rhodes of Wichita; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Leslie Rhodes and Guy Rhodes Jr.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wheat Lands Convention Center, Garden City.

Hattie Fry

Funeral for Hattie Fry, 95, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Fry died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Sept. 11, 1907, at Pittsburg, the daughter of Ralph Charleton and Hattie Winfred Flaharty Wilson. She grew up and attended schools in Pittsburg, graduated from Pittsburg High School and was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended Pittsburg State Teachers College where she majored in music.

Her love of music led her to teaching piano lessons while in college and she also taught grade school music in Springdale, Ark., and in Dennis. She also served as the church organist and choir director for short periods of time in Parsons and Liberal. From 1966 to 1968, she served as the secretary for Western Kansas Manufacturing Association.

Mrs. Fry was a member of First Christian Church of Garden City and an active member of the Women's Fellowship for many years. She was a lifetime member of Order of the Eastern Star, a 75-year member of Tri Sigma Sorority, and belonged to Daughters of the American Revolution and the Acorn Club.

On Sept. 11, 1929, she married Joseph Dale Fry at Wichita. She and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States and especially enjoyed the Colorado Rockies. A homemaker, Mrs. Fry enjoyed cooking, food preservation, needlework of all kinds and music.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Melvin Dale Sr.,, and a daughter, Jeanette C. Parks, both of Garden City; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ralph Wilson; a sister, Mabel Ritzman; and a great-granddaughter, Tammi Anderson.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Wanna L. Maxwell

HUGOTON - Wanna L. Maxwell, 82, of Andover and formerly of Hugoton, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Wichita.

She was born Sept. 5, 1920, at St. John, the daughter of Roy and Opal F. Williamson Lowry. The family moved from St. John to Hugoton in 1921.

On May 14, 1940, she married Robert Maxwell. He died Oct. 6, 1980. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Cedric Lowry; and a sister, Fayette Lowry.

Mrs. Maxwell worked as a secretary for several businesses in Hugoton, including for the Stevens County Clerk at the court house. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Girod of El Dorado; a brother, Cleston C. Lowry of Hugoton; a sister, Eula I. Smith of Copeland; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, with the Rev. Robert Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Pro-life Clinic in Wichita or the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, both in care of the funeral home, Box 236, Hugoton, KS 67951.
