Clarence 'Clem' Savolt

Memorial Mass for Clarence M. "Clem" Savolt, 79, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. A private family graveside service will take place later in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mr. Savolt died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at his home in Garden City.

He was born Feb. 4, 1924, at Garden City, the son of John and Eva Kisner Savolt. A lifetime resident of the Garden City and Holcomb areas, he attended Holcomb schools.

Mr. Savolt first worked in farming, working in the sugar beet fields. He then worked for Northern Natural Gas before starting his own business, Savolt Construction. After working for 40 years in construction, he retired in 2000. He spent the last several summers helping at Bob Huber's Produce. He enjoyed his work in construction, spending time in the Colorado mountains, traveling to Las Vegas, doing puzzles and coaching baseball. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church.

In September 1947, he married Anita Baier at Garden City. She died Jan. 21, 1969. He also was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Pete, John, Jake, Joe and Albert Savolt; and four sisters, Myrtle Little, Kate Jacob, Margaret Roth and Sister Anna Marie Savolt.

On Dec. 29, 1970, he married Florence M. Mader at Raton, N.M. She survives. He also is survived by a son, Timothy Savolt, and a daughter, Linda Hendrixson, both of Garden City; a stepson, Randall Mader of Rippen, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Donita Blacksher of Blackhawk, Colo.; a brother, Bill Savolt of New York; a sister, Irene Bledsoe of Alabama; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to St. Dominic Catholic Church or St. Catherine Hospice, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Virgil Milton Barnes

Funeral for Virgil Milton Barnes, 82, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Cousins officiating and the Rev. Donald E. Carter assisting. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Barnes died Monday, May 19, 2003, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

He was born March 26, 1921, at Lakin, the son of Martin and Chloe Greeson Barnes. He grew up in Lakin and attended schools there. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, from May 1942 to October 1945, he returned to Lakin.

On Nov. 18, 1951, he married Ila Wiggans at Bronson. They moved to Garden City in 1966, to Dillon in 1971 and back to Garden City in 1978. He worked for 18 years building highways in Kansas and then worked another 18 years in the oil fields before retiring in 1984.

Mr. Barnes was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Senior Center of Finney County, American Legion, VFW, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, dancing and gardening.

His wife died Nov. 24, 1998. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Vernon Barnes; two sisters, Vada McMichael and Vera Barnes; and a grandchild, Ila Vernice Barnes.

Survivors include two sons, Lyle Barnes of Liberal, and Milton Barnes of North Platte, Neb.; two daughters, Marcia Hill and Janice Parks, both of Garden City; two brothers, Ralph Barnes of Garden City, and Daryl Barnes of Minneola; two sisters, Doris McMichael and Wilda Tallant, both of Lakin; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to RSVP, in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Rosemary Flakus

Altar Society rosary for Rosemary Flakus, 89, of Ellinwood, will be 4 p.m. today at Kimple Funeral Home, Ellinwood, followed by a vigil service at 7 p.m. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellinwood, with the Rev. John Maes officiating. Burial will be in Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery, Ellinwood.

Mrs. Flakus died Monday, May 19, 2003, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.

She was born Feb. 8, 1914, at Hutchinson, the daughter of William J. and Marie Zimmer Hines.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, with the exception of 10 years spent in Wichita, she was an executive secretary for Earl Wakefield Independent Oil Producers in Wichita until 1946 and also worked as a bookkeeper for Home Lumber & Supply at Ellinwood. A homemaker, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar Society, both at Ellinwood.

On June 10, 1946, she married Joseph A. Flakus. He died Nov. 3, 1994. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Leo Hines.

Survivors include a son, Stephen Flakus of Ellinwood; two daughters, Virginia Shults of Webster, N.Y., and Mary Ann Spangler of Scott City; a sister, Caroline Reichuber of Larned; and five grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Central Kansas Medical Center Foundation Inc., in care of the funeral home, 113 N. Main, Ellinwood, KS 67526.

Joseph A. Werner

Vigil service for Joseph A. Werner, 93, of Kinsley, will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Kinsley. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Austin Herrmann officiating. Burial will be in New St. Joseph Cemetery, Offerle.

Mr. Werner died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Edwards County Hospital in Kinsley.

He was born June 11, 1909, at Kinsley, the son of Robert and Frances Kauzer Werner.

A lifelong resident of Kinsley, Mr. Werner was a retired farmer. He belonged to St. Nicholas Catholic Church and St. Edwards Council 2131, and was a former Offerle Co-op Board member and former board member of Ford County ASCS.

On Aug. 17, 1935, he married Helen Louise Burkhart in Hodgeman County. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Ronald Werner of Halstead, and Thomas Werner of Offerle; two daughters, Sue Kramer of Cimarron, and Marietta Strecker of Colby; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at McKillip Memorial Funeral Home, Kinsley. Memorials are suggested to the St. Nicholas Endowment Fund or Edwards County Healthcare Foundation, both in care of the funeral home.

Gladys I. Leatherman

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Gladys I. Leatherman, 86, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Leatherman died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Hays Medical Center in Hays.

She was born May 10, 1917, at Protection, the daughter of Fred and Anna Ratzlaff Nightengale.

A Scott County resident since 1947, moving from Fredonia, she was a homemaker.

On Nov. 24, 1940, she married Jacob F. Leatherman at Fredonia. He survives. She also is survived by three sons, Forrest Leatherman of Fort Lupton, Colo., Rodney Leatherman of Scott City, and Donald Leatherman of Liberal; a daughter, Fayetta Summervill of Hutchinson; six sisters, Viola Wiggers of Moundridge, Elsie Johnson of Scott City, Edna Frank of Copeland, Adalla Johnson of Halstead, Velma Decker of Lehigh, and Virgie Koehn of West Point, Miss.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Stephanie Leatherman; four sisters; and three brothers.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the Scott County Hospital Home Health Department, in care of the funeral home.

Claude Unruh

MONTEZUMA - Claude Unruh, 93, of Montezuma and formerly of Durham, died Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where he had resided for the past three years.

He was born Dec. 1, 1909, in Marion County, the son of Fred P. and Lena Voth Unruh.

On June 14, 1931, he married Della Esther Becker. She died June 4, 1965. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Deloyd Nightengale; four brothers, Herbert, Harley, Paul and Walter; and three sisters, Rhoda, Esther and Marie.

Mr. Unruh was a farmer and a minister. He belonged to the Morning Star Congregation of the Church Of God In Christ Mennonite at Tampa.

On Jan. 28, 1966, he married Leah Nichols at Copeland. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Gary Unruh of Durham, and Willard Unruh of Hesston; four stepsons, Kenneth and Devern Nightengale, both of Copeland, Bob Nightengale of Center, Colo., and Willis Nightengale of Texas; three daughters, Alice Unruh of Moundridge, Lillian Wiebe of Durham, and Anita Schmidt of Montezuma; a stepdaughter, Letha Loewen of Corning, Calif.; a daughter-in-law; 30 grandchildren; and 65 great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Morning Star Congregation of the Church Of God In Christ Mennonite, Tampa. Bruce Dirks, Merlin Wiebe and Donald Koehn, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Logan Cemetery, Tampa.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc. or the Gospel Tract & Bible Society, both in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.

Willard 'Gene' Forsythe

Graveside service for Willard E. "Gene" Forsythe, 66, was to be 2 p.m. today at Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Arley Forsyth officiating and military rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Mr. Forsythe died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Sept. 8, 1936, at Ornogo, Mo., the son of Frank J. and Viola M. Purcell Forsythe. He grew up in Jasper County, Mo., and attended schools there. He served in the U.S. Army in the 1950s.

A Garden City resident since the early 1970s, moving from the area of Webb City, Mo., Mr. Forsythe worked as a self-employed carpenter and Sheetrock hanger. He was a life member of the American Legion, Harry H. Renick Post No. 9.

On March 15, 1976, he married Pauline Lancaster Arwine at Garden City. She died May 23, 1991. He also was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Bobby and Gereld Forsythe.

He is survived by three sons, Randy Seeber of Baxter Springs, Steve Forsythe of Portis, and Randy Forsythe of St. Joseph, Mo.; six daughters, Sheila Haddock of Edwardsville, Debbie Riley of Bonner Springs, Robin Lyon of Tulsa, Okla., Rhonda Forsythe, Brenda Forsythe and Cindy Konwrnsar, all of Webb City; a brother, David Forsythe of Alba, Mo.; a sister, Nancy Smith of Webb City; and 18 grandchildren.

Memorials to the Gene Forsythe Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Ruby Mae Salmans

SCOTT CITY - Funeral for Ruby Mae Salmans, 85, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Lynne Smith officiating. Graveside service will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Larned City Cemetery.

Mrs. Salmans died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center in Wichita.

She was born May 25, 1917, at Rozel, the daughter of Fred and Belva Ricks Spreier.

A Scott City resident since 1972, moving from Hanston, she was a nurse and a homemaker. She belonged to First Baptist Church of Scott City, American Baptist Women and the Gideon Bible Association.

On May 22, 1946, she married Wayne Alvin Salmans at Larned. He died Aug. 27, 1988, at Garden City. She also was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include two sons, Don W. Salmans of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and Stan Salmans of Scott City; two brothers, LaVern L. Spreier of Jetmore, and Everett Spreier of Rozel; a sister, Marjorie Fuller of Garden City; and five grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church or the Gideon Bible Association, both in care of the funeral home.
