Jose F. Acosta

ULYSSES - Rosary for Jose F. Acosta, 74, of Ulysses, will be 7 tonight at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Louis Hoang officiating. Burial will follow at Elkhart Cemetery.

Mr. Acosta died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Lantern Park Manor in Colby.

He was born Oct. 15, 1928, at San Pedro, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Trinidad and Macedonia Morales Acosta.

Before his retirement, Mr. Acosta was a farmer. He belonged to St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Elkhart.

On Nov. 2, 1952, he married Estefana Hermosillo at San Pedro, Chihuahua. She preceded him in death as did his parents; a brother, Guadalupe Morales; a grandson, Manuel Acosta; and a nephew.

He is survived by two sons, Ramon Acosta of Odessa, Texas, and Alvaro Acosta of Satanta; four daughters, Rita Natividad, Maria Sandoval and Imelda Acosta, all of Ulysses, and Gloria Lujan of Liberal; three brothers, Erasmo Morales of Ulysses, Eladio Morales of Satanta, and Socorro Morales of Fort Stockton, Texas; two sisters, Maria and Martina Aranda, both of Elkhart; 22 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses.

Helen Roberts

ELKHART - Graveside service for Helen Roberts, 86, will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pond Creek Cemetery in Pond Creek, Okla., with the Rev. Terry Koehn officiating.

Mrs. Roberts died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

She was born Jan. 22, 1917, at Rich Hill, Mo., the daughter of George L. and Frona C. Radford Bullock. She spent her early years at Rich Hill and later became a resident of Pond Creek. In 1973, she moved to Cheney and took care of her parents during their illness. She moved to Goddard in 1985, and to Elkhart in 1986.

A homemaker, her special interests included hunting, fishing and cooking. She was a member of Trinity United Christian Church at Cheney.

She is survived by three stepchildren; five sisters, Hazel Martin of Liberal, Maxine Cook of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Darlene Lucas of Wichita, Judy Chatham of Topeka, and Joyce Sparks of Cheney; two brothers, Ray and Jack Bullock, both of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister-in-law; two brothers-in-law; seven nieces; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam Roberts; a brother, George Bullock Jr.; and two nephews.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Elkhart. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Morton County Care Center, in care of the funeral home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Veola Gallaway Stefanski

Funeral for Veola Gallaway Stefanski, 86, was to be 10:30 this morning at Assembly of God Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Ray Holman officiating. Burial was to follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Stefanski died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

She was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Cleburne County, Ark., the daughter of Alford and Minnie E. Moody Criscoe.

A Kansas resident since 1949, moving from Arkansas, she had been a seamstress for a sewing factory in Arkansas. She was a member of Assembly of God Church, Garden City.

Survivors include a son, Edmond Gallaway of Garden City; three daughters, Thressia Philbern of South Fork, Colo., Moleta Cronin of Pierceville, and Syble McDonald of Larned; a sister, Earlene Hornya of LaCrosse; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials to the Veola Stefanski Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home, 620 N. Main St.

Nadeene A. Gooch

TRIBUNE - Funeral for Nadeene A. Gooch, 85, will be 2 p.m. MST Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Charles Ayers officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.

Mrs. Gooch died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.

She was born April 4, 1918, at Leoti, the daughter of Lionel E. and Jessie B. Preedy Gorsuch. A lifetime resident of Wichita and Greeley counties, she graduated from Chillicothe (Mo.) Business School.

On Feb. 7, 1943, she married Harold Gooch at Las Vegas. They were partners in Gooch's I.G.A. from 1948 until her retirement in 1981. He died Nov. 17, 1999, at Tribune. She also was preceded in death by a sister and a daughter.

A homemaker, Mrs. Gooch was a member of First Presbyterian Church, VFW Auxiliary, Greeley County Pride Committee and Cross County E.H.U., all at Tribune, and belonged to Rebekah Lodge at Garden City.

She is survived by two sons, Dewayne Gooch of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dwight Gooch of Tribune; two daughters, Deanne Gound of Leawood, and Dalene Moser of Tribune; and six grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials to the Nadeene A. Gooch Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Agnes O. Williamson

SATANTA - Funeral for Agnes O. Williamson, 87, was to be 10:30 this morning at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Burial was to be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Mrs. Williamson died Friday, May 16, 2003, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.

She was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Haskell County, the daughter of Lester and Laura Lucas Hickman.

On Dec. 8, 1935, she married Francis H.P. "Dutch" Williamson at Sublette. They owned and operated the Modoc Hotel, Williamson Grocery, a furniture store, the Satanta Cafe, Wigwam and other businesses in Satanta.

A lifetime resident, she was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, a former member of Rebekah Lodge and a former den mother of Cub Scouts, all at Satanta. She enjoyed spending time with her family, loved to visit, and took pride in her community and supported many events.

Her husband died Feb. 23, 1972. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Ronald Dean Williamson; and three brothers, Laurence, Lenn and Billy Dwayne Hickman.

She is survived by two sons, Rodney Paul Williamson of Satanta, and Laurence Dale Williamson of La Porte, Colo.; a daughter-in-law; a brother, Oliver Hickman of Ulysses; a sister, Verna Ondesko of White City, Ore.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Satanta Ambulance or Satanta Boy Scouts Troop No. 143, and may be left at Shopping Stop True Value at Satanta or mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

Lena Brainard

Lena Brainard, 94, of Newton, died Thursday, May 15, 2003.

She is survived by three daughters, Susan Diane Ashcraft and Beverly Willems, both of Newton, and Elizabeth Ellen Schneider of Hesston; two sons, Robert Wayne Brainard of Paris, Texas, and Roy Milton Brainard of Garden City; a brother, Ted Nickel, and a sister, Tillie Nickel, both of Oklahoma City; 24 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Church of the Nazarene, Newton.

Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Petersen Funeral Home, Newton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 215 N. Main, Newton, KS 67114.

Norbert F. Kirmer

INGALLS - Norbert F. Kirmer, 79, died May 15, 2003, at his home in Ingalls.

He was born Aug. 1, 1923, the son of Frank and Albina Penka Kirmer in Oden. A lifetime Ingalls resident, he was a farmer for several years and worked for Ingalls Feedyard from 1968 to 2000.

Kirmer was a former Ingalls School Board member and member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. He married Marilyn Ruth Witsken of Dodge City Sept. 14, 1948. She died Aug. 12, 1979.

Survivors include three sons, Joe Kirmer, Cimarron, Phil Kirmer, Ingalls, and Thad Kirmer, Topeka; two daughters, Kathi Weiler, Katy, Texas, and Karol Farrell, Carmel, Ind.; five sisters, Margaret Ann Werner, Spearville, Magdalen Freeburg, Parsons, Carol Brogden, Arizona, Anita Kirmer, Dodge City, and Renne Kirmer, Wichita; and five grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Berneda Kirmer; and one brother, Herman Kirmer.

Vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 903 Central Ave., in Dodge City. Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Cathedral with Rev. Joseph E. Bahr presiding. Friends may call from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel in Dodge City. Burial will be in Greencrest Memorial Gardens in Dodge City.

The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Heart Association, both in care of Burkhart-Ziegler Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.

Daryl J. Hanson

Daryl J. Hanson, 64, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

He was born Oct. 15, 1930, at McPherson, the son of Axel Edward and Kathryn Snyder Hanson.

A longtime resident of the Kingman community, he also maintained a home in Garden City. He was a production superintendent at McCoy Petroleum and a member of the United Methodist Church of Kingman.

On Feb. 28, 1960, he married Doris Nichols at Hamilton. She survives. He also is survived by two sons, Kevin Hanson of Dodge City, and Kelly Hanson of Overland Park; a daughter, Kendra Taber of Hutchinson; two brothers, Marion Hanson of Newton, and Clarence Hanson of Pratt; three sisters, Nita Beal of Des Moines, Iowa, Jetty Chaney of Grimes, Iowa, and Carla Wolf of Salisbury, Md.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul.

Funeral was 10 a.m. May 2 at the United Methodist Church, Kingman, with the Rev. John Schmitt officiating. Burial followed in Walnut Hill Cemetery in Kingman.

Memorials are suggested to the Kingman United Methodist Church Choir Fund or the Kansas Oil and Gas Museum Foundation of Great Bend, both in care of Livingston Funeral Home, 1830 N. Main, Kingman, KS 67068.
