Ruth E. Hemphill

Ruth E. Hemphill, 89, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at her home in Lawrence.

She was born Dec. 12, 1913, at McPherson, the daughter of Harry and Lillian Fox Colburn. She graduated from McPherson High School in 1931 and from Christ Hospital School of Nursing, Topeka, in 1939.

A Lawrence resident since 1939, moving from Topeka, Mrs. Hemphill worked as a registered nurse at Lawrence Memorial Hospital and as a private nurse, as well as making a home on the family farm. She was a member of Mackey Merry Makers, Oak Ridge Birthday Club, Trinity Lutheran Church and an alumni of the Kansas State Nurses Association.

On March 12, 1939, she married Arthur Hemphill at McPherson. He died Nov. 11, 1979.

She is survived by a son, Michael Hemphill of Lawrence; two daughters, Judith Hundley, a former Garden City resident now living in Eudora, and Linda Buttron of Nortonville; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.

The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or Trinity Lutheran Church, both in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.

Larry Scot Sinclair

KISMET - Larry Scot Sinclair, 42, of Denver and formerly of Kismet, died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Denver.

The son of Larry Clair and Shirley Vanderpool Sinclair, he was born July 13, 1960, at Meade. He grew up in the Kismet area and graduated from Southwestern Heights at Plains.

Mr. Sinclair was a gas field worker with a pipeline company. His hobbies included motorcycles, fishing and hunting, and he enjoyed being with his family.

Survivors include two sisters, Virginia Howard of Hugoton, and Carolyn Deacon of Kismet; and several uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Inurnment will take place later. Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.

Dyckie Wallace

Funeral for Dyckie Wallace, 77, of Topeka, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Topeka, followed by a graveside service at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Wallace died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at a Topeka care center where she had been taken for recuperation following surgery.

She was born Oct. 8, 1925, at Scott City, the daughter of Richard and Iva Juanita Bradstreet. A native Kansan, she had returned four years ago to be near family in the Topeka area and in Garden City.

A successful artist for nearly 40 years in Southern California, her art was a lifelong pursuit but became a livelihood in the 1960s when she and her husband, Hubert, began traveling to art shows throughout the Los Angeles and central coastal areas of California. She was an oil painter of landscapes, scenes of the modern west and symbols of the farming life, and was part of a circle of artists who toured together and produced a series of open home art shows for many years in the South Bay area of Los Angeles.

In addition to her husband, whom she married on Jan. 30, 1943, she is survived by their children, Rick Wallace of Vashon Island, Wash., and Susan Wales of Ponca City, Okla.; two sisters, Lavonna Creviston of Topeka, and June Young of Rialto, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association, 4300 Drury Lane, Topeka, KS 66604.

Beulah Helen Huxman

ELKHART - Funeral for Beulah Helen Huxman, 87, will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Church of God, Elkhart, with the Rev. John Morden officiating. Burial will be 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Arnold Cemetery in Arnold.

Mrs. Huxman died Monday, May 5, 2003, at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart.

She was born March 10, 1916, at Hoisington, the daughter of Charles and Margery Rowe Conkright. In 1917, the family moved to the family farm at Arnold.

After graduating from Arnold High School in 1934, she obtained her teaching certificate and taught in a one-room country school for several years. A homemaker, she also had worked as a cook at Arnold Grade School for a couple of years, was employed at First State Bank in Ransom, and had been a nurse's aide at the care center in Ransom. Later in life, she moved to Elkhart.

Mrs. Huxman was a member of Arnold United Methodist Church and First Church of God at Elkhart. Her special interests included spending Memorial Day weekend at Arnold with her family and attending the Conkright family reunions. She enjoyed spending time with her great-grandchildren, traveling, and playing cards, dominoes and bridge.

On Sept. 14, 1935, she married Edgar J. Huxman at WaKeeney. He died Aug. 20, 1974. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Orval Conkright; and a grandson, Travis Farrington.

Survivors include a son, Gary Huxman of Newton; a daughter, Vada Farrington of Elkhart; two sisters, Vera Jean Huxman of Arnold, and Maxine Giess of Ransom; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law.

There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House of Amarillo, Texas, in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.

Billy Lee Hale

SATANTA - Billy Lee Hale, 76, of Satanta, died Monday, May 5, 2003, from injuries suffered in a farm-related accident in Jay, Okla.

He was born Aug. 12, 1926, at Collinsville, Okla., the son of Henry O. and Cynthia Axton Hale.

Mr. Hale was a retired conductor for the AT & SF Railroad and had operated Hale Tree Trimming Business for many years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Satanta and had served on the Satanta City Council for several years. He enjoyed fishing and taking care of his cattle on his ranch in Jay.

On April 12, 1949, he married Geraldine Evelyn Ables at Bentonville, Ark. She died Nov. 12, 1976. On Jan. 15, 1977, he married Gail Bodine Augerot at Satanta. She died May 18, 2002. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles and Tom Hale; and a half sister, Garnett Jones.

He is survived by four sons, Kenneth L. Hale of LaJunta, Colo., Henry L. Hale of Satanta, Bill D. Hale of St. Helens, Ore., and Jeffrey A. Hale of Scappoose, Ore.; two stepdaughters, Beverly Wasinger of Canon City, Colo., and Blenna Hoenig of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, Russell Hale of California, and Ted Hale of Oklahoma; a sister, Neva Webb of Pryor, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Jeff Miller officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.

Andrea Garcia Flores

Vigil service for Andrea Garcia Flores, 62, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Mrs. Flores died Sunday, May 4, 2003, at her home in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 18, 1941, at Garden City, the daughter of Manuel and Phyllis Pichardo Garcia. She grew up and attended school in Garden City.

In June 1966, she married Jose D. Flores Sr. at Orland, Calif.

Mrs. Flores worked as a cook at El Zarape Restaurant from 1974 to 1988. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. A homemaker, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, reading the Bible and praying the rosary, cooking and flower gardens.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by six sons, Louis Gomez, Manuel Gomez, Jose Flores Jr., Jesse Flores, Guadalupe "Lupe" Gomez and Raul Torres Gomez, all of Garden City; three daughters, Estella Gomez and Beatrice Ramirez, both of Garden City, and Theresa Flores of Utah; six brothers, Secundino "Dino" Garcia, Tony Garcia and Mike Garcia, all of Garden City, Hector Garcia of Houston, Manuel Garcia of Allen, Texas, and Louis Garcia of Wichita; a sister, Ruth Garcia Jurado of Garden City; 32 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lupe Jimenez; a brother, Joey Garcia; and a grandson, Adrian Gomez.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Andrea Garcia Flores Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 412 N. Seventh St.

Lawrence H. McKean

SCOTT CITY - Graveside service for Lawrence H. McKean, 80, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Scott County Cemetery, Scott City, with the Rev. Robert Nuckolls officiating.

Mr. McKean died Thursday, May 1, 2003, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.

He was born Dec. 21, 1922, at Scott City, the son of Harold C. and Jessie Scott McKean.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, he was a carpenter. He belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 284 and Scott County Shrine Club, both at Scott City, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

On Aug. 28, 1940, he married Doris Clark at Scott City. She died June 21, 1984, at Tribune. He also was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Merle McKean; and a sister, Jeanne McKean.

He is survived by a daughter, Pamela Schultz of Escondido, Calif.; a sister, Joyce Morga of St. Louis; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Scott County Hospital, in care of the funeral home.

Janice Marie Everett

A scripture prayer service for Janice Marie Everett, 75, of Albert Lea, Minn., will be 6:30 tonight at Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel, Albert Lea. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Theodore Catholic Church in Albert Lea, with the Rev. Robert Schneider officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Theodore Cemetery.

Mrs. Everett died Friday, May 2, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

She was born Oct. 2, 1927, at Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Dr. Alfred and Ruth Sours Staudt. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterloo and received a bachelor's degree in library science from St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minn.

On April 21, 1960, she married Richard Everett at Waterloo. They had lived in Waterloo; Kansas City, Kan.; Davenport, Iowa; Omaha, Neb.; and in Albert Lea since 1975.

Mrs. Everett had been employed by the Albert Lea Public Library for more than 20 years. She also had been a civilian employee of the U.S. Army serving as a librarian in Germany for two years, and as librarian at St. Ambrose College in Davenport. She was an active member of St. Theodore Catholic Church, was an avid reader, and enjoyed working crossword puzzles, spending time with her grandchildren and family and her pet cat, Sonny.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, William Everett of Annandale, Minn., Richard Everett of Garden City, and Mary Everett of Minneapolis; a brother, James Staudt of Hot Springs Village, Alaska; two sisters, Katherine Staudt of Waterloo, and Annette Cook of Apple Valley, Minn.; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at the funeral chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.
