Richard Eugene Hobbs, 64, Arkansas City, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Via-Christi Medical Center - St. Francis Campus of Wichita. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2003, in the Springside Cemetery. Born April 1, 1938, in Perth, he was the son of James Franklin and Maude Bertha (Schwartz) Hobbs. He was reared and educated in Kiowa. Richard married Melva Shafer on May 30, 1963, in Hannibal, Mo. The couple has made Arkansas City their home since. Richard has worked as a mechanic for Earl Haines Motors and later Reedy Ford. He also worked as a mechanic for the Cowley County Road Crew, retiring in 1991. A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Memorial services for Gussie Mounce Mason, 100, who died Friday, March 28, 2003, at Prairie Homestead Health Faculty in Wichita, were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2003, at Prairie Homestead Chapel in Wichita. Graveside services were at 11:30 a.m. Monday, in Parker Cemetery. Born Sept. 27, 1902, in a rural homestead, she was the daughter of Samuel Huston Mounce and Daisy V. (Kirkendall) Mounce. She was a rural schoolteacher who taught many years in Kay County, Okla., and surrounding areas, in Three Sands and Marland-Red Rock area and also taught second grade at Griffenstein Elementary School in Wichita, for 23 years. Memorials have been established with Hospice Care of Kansas, Martinson Avenue Christian Church and Prairie Homestead Health Care Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
