DELAINE SUTHERLAND ROSE
Tuesday July 3, 2007
Hazel “Delaine” Sutherland Rose, 87,of Prescott, Kansas, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at Spring River Christian Village, Joplin, Missouri. She was born September 10, 1919 in LaHarpe, Kansas, the daughter of Arthur and Hazel Edwards Duggan.
She married James Sutherland who preceded her in death July of 1981. She later married Harry Rose who also preceded her in January of 1998.
Hazel graduated from Fort Scott High School and attended Pasadena Community College. She was a member of the Prescott United Methodist Church where she was choir director, UMW, Philo Study Club and EHU. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Arthur Richard Duggan.
Survivors include three sons, James A. Sutherland & Jan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Robert L. Sutherland & Mary of Webb City, Missouri and Glen R. Sutherland & Bonnie of Joplin, Missouri; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, July 7, 2007 at the Prescott United Methodist Church, Prescott, Kansas.
Visitation will be from 7-8 PM, Friday at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kansas.
Contributions are suggested to the Prescott United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Prescott Cemetery.
Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, Pleasanton, Kansas.

KATHLEEN M. BUTTS
Monday July 2, 2007
Kathleen M. Butts, 72, of Mound City, Kansas died Monday, July 2, 2007 at her home. She was born October 9, 1934 in Canton, Ohio, the daughter of Franklin and Elsie Snyder Butts. She worked for a number of years as a legal secretary in the insurance field and also for the International Headquarters of the Church of the Nazarene in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a member of the Pleasanton Church of the Nazarene, and attended the United Methodist Church in Mound City. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Clinton Butts and Franklin Butts Jr. and five sisters, June Needham, Donna Swineford, Phyllis Michelis, Gladys Crim and Barbara Skaggs.
Survivors include her special friend and caregiver, Clara Rogers of Mound City, Kansas; a brother-in-law, George Swineford of Pleasanton, Kansas and twenty-nine nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Jody Swineford and Dianne Redding.
Cremation with Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at the United Methodist Church, Mound City, Kansas.
Contributions are suggested to Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, Mound City, Kansas.

Walter Eugene Cooke
Saturday June 30, 2007
Walter Eugene "Gene" Cooke was born May 19, 1920 at Fort Scott, Kansas the son of Ray and Frances Galvin Cooke. He passed away June 30, 2007 at the Indian Creek Nursing Center in Overland Park, Kansas. He owned and operated the Schlitz Beer Distributorship in Kansas City, Topeka and Lawrence.
Gene was a Navy veteran of WWII. He married Lenore Clark who preceded him in death November 11, 2001.
Graveside Services will be held 1:00 pm Thursday July 5, 2007 at the Fairview cemetery in Fulton, Kansas. Contributions may be made to the Heart Assoc. or Cancer Society.
Services are under the direction of Coffel Schneider Funeral Home at Pleasanton, Kansas

WALDON COX
Monday June 25, 2007
Clifford “Waldon” Cox, 84, of Pleasanton, Kansas, died Monday, June 25, 2007 at Kansas City Hospice, Kansas City, Missouri. He was born December 7, 1922 at Blue Mound, Kansas, the son of Clifford W. and Ruby Zimmerman .
He married Joan Coberly on July 3, 1947 at Pleasanton, Kansas. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year.
Waldon worked as a salesman & sales manager for Cox Motor Company in Pleasanton for 481/2 years. He was also a stockman and enjoyed working with his cattle and loved attending all of his grandchildren’s school and county fair activities.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Pleasanton, the VFW, AF&AM Masonic Lodge and the Pleasanton Housing Authority. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Navy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Worland, Merle & Duard and a sister who died in infancy, Verna Agatha Cox.
Waldon leaves behind his wife, Joan of the home; three daughters, eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, daughters Sandi Carpenter (Dick) and their children, Chad (Tonya) Carpenter, Kadence and Kanyon, Pleasanton, Chase (Tara)Carpenter, Jyllian and Bradley, Pleasanton, Chane Carpenter, Wichita, Kansas, Jane Orr, Jordan and London, Newton, Kansas; daughter, Shelli Schoenhals (Dean), Pleasanton and their children, Jaisha (Rafael) Schoenhals-Murillo and Gabriel and MarcAnthony, Pleasanton, Trae, Rance and Shaila Schoenhals, Pleasanton; daughter Sherri Coffman (Chip) and their children, Gannon, Mason and Preston Coffman, Pleasanton.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 28th, at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kansas. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00, Wednesday, at the chapel. Contributions or suggested to the United Methodist Church or the Pleasanton cemetery Association. Interment will be in Pleasanton Cemetery.
Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, Pleasanton, Kansas.

Grady Franklyn Elder
Tuesday August 21, 2007
Grady Franklyn Elder was born January 23, 1949 in Salina, Kansas to Jean Elder Ethridge and the late Frank G. Elder. Grady died on August 21, 2007 at his home in La Cygne, Kansas. He attended Hedville and Humbarger Elementary, Salina Central High School and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a degree in Art Education in 1971. He played football and wrestled while he earned his degree. Grady taught art and coached wrestling at Prairie View High School from 1972 until he retired in 2003. After his retirement, he remained busy as a real estate agent, licensed in Kansas and Missouri. An avid bowhunter and fisherman, he enjoyed outdoor sports and was a long time member of the Kansas Bowhunter’s Association and Whitetails Unlimited.
He married Linda (Wicke) Elder on January 2, 1971. She survives of the home. They have two daughters, Erica Elder, Austin, Texas and Frankie Howard, son-in-law Mike Howard and his “best buddy,” grandson Ashton Howard of LaCygne, Kansas. Other survivors include sisters Faye Clements and husband Marvin: Hutchison, Kansas, Carol Doran and husband Rick: Harlan, Iowa, Lynne Anderson and husband Clayton: Smolan, Kansas and brothers Bryan Elder and wife Pam: Yukon, Oklahoma, and Lyle Elder: Independence, Kansas, six nieces and fifteen nephews.
A Memorial Party will be held at the LaCygne Community Building on Saturday, August 25th at 6:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made in Grady’s name to “Kids In Need,” a community fund, of which he was a founder. Memorials can be sent to LaCygne City Hall, attention: Kids In Need (P.O. Box 600, LaCygne, KS 66040). Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider, LaCygne, Kansas.

EMILY LORENE KIMZEY

Emily Lorene Kimzey, 85, of Topeka, Kansas, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at Brewster Place, Topeka, Kansas. Lorene and her twin sister, Maxine were born October 19, 1921, near Mine Creek, Linn County, Kansas, the daughter of Ross and Mabel Leonard. At age 3, the family moved to a farm northeast of Pleasanton, KS. She attended Oberlin school and graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1939. The twins were musically talented and entertained their neighbors regularly in their younger days. She married Elvin Kimzey on December 24, 1941 in Nevada, MO. Upon their return to Linn County after WWII, she lived with her family in Pleasanton, Mound City and LaCygne. She moved to Topeka in 1956 where she raised her children, cared for elderly family members, and was employed by Crosby’s Department Stores and Dustins, Inc. until her retirement in 1984. She and her husband spent the next 20 years traveling in their motor home, loving her grandchildren without limitation, and enjoying family and friends. Lorene was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the First Christian Church of Topeka, and an honorary member of the Kansas-Missouri chapter of the Winnebago International Travelers Club. She is survived b y her husband, Elvin of Topeka, Kansas; her sister, Maxine Swanson, also of Topeka; her two sons, Steve of Austin, Texas and Ron of Atlanta, Georgia; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:30 PM, Saturday, August 25, 2007 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, LaCygne, Kansas. Vistiation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Friday at the Chapel. Contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, LaCygne.

RAYFORD D. BLEVINS

Rayford Deyon Blevins, 72, of Pittsburg, Kansas, formerly of Pleasanton, Kansas. died Sunday, August 19, 2007 at Mt. Carmel Medical Center, Pittsburg, Kansas. He was born September 9, 1934 in Sweetwater, Oklahoma, the son of Orville and Billie Howell Blevins. He married Shirley Herring.
Rayford graduated from Pleasanton High School in 1952 and attended Pittsburg State University, receiving an Associate Degree in Refrigeration.
He served on the first Linn County Rural Fire Board, was a former member of the Pleasanton City Council and City Fire Department and a member of the VFW.
He served two years with the United States Army and 18 years in the National Guard and was unit commander of the National Guard unit at Pleasanton.
Rayford also drove a school bus for nine years for the Pleasanton School district.
He managed the local Western Auto store for 16 years before going to work for P&M Coal Company, retiring from P&M in 1990 as a field supervisor.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Pleasanton, Kansas; his step-mother, Evelyn Dodson of Missouri; one son, Norman Blevins of Pittsburg, Kansas; one daughter, Raye Ann Baker of Olathe, Kansas; one brother, Dewayne Blevins of California one sister, Joyce Noakes of Missouri, one grandson, Chris Baker and two great grandchildren, Madison and Jackson
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 24, 2007 at the Coffel-Schneider Chapel, Pleasanton, Kansas. Visitation will be from 6:30-8:00 PM,Thursday at the chapel. Contributions are suggested to the Pleasanton cemetery Association. Interment will be in Pleasanton Cemetery.
Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home, Pleasanton, Kansas.

William A Fleming

William A. “Bill “ Fleming, age 70, of LaCygne, Kansas died Saturday August 18, 2007 at the Miami County Medical Center in Paola, Kansas. He was born April 5, 1937 at Amoret, Missouri the son of Earl Edward and Nellie Mae Bishop Fleming. He was retired from the Kansas Army National Guard. He had worked as a farm manager for Leasure Prairie Farms and as a wood worker. He married Judith Hurd on February 28, 1964 at Fort Scott, Kansas. He was a member of the LaCygne United Methodist Church, cemetery District #4, serving as treasurer, and past president of Rural Water District #3. He was preceded in death by a son Billy Fleming. He is survived by his wife Judith of the home, one son Matthew Fleming and wife Sherri of LaCygne; four brothers: Edward Fleming of Pleasanton, Kansas, Jim Fleming of LaCygne, Joe Fleming of Linn Valley, Kansas and Wilbur Fleming of LaCygne; four sisters: Susanna Fleming of LaCygne, Bonnie Bland of Parker, Kansas, Jessie Russell of Drexel, Missouri and Hazel Robbins of LaCygne; and three grandchildren: Tony, Courtney, and Zackary.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM Tuesday August 21 at the LaCygne United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 PM Monday at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in LaCygne. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association. Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider, LaCygne, Kansas.

Charles Scott Atherton-Sheppard

Charles Atherton-Sheppard, age 21, Pleasanton, Kansas died Friday March 7, 2008. He was born on February 15, 1987 at Fort Scott, Kansas the son of Clint Sheppard and Lisa Atherton. He was currently employed at Wade Quarries. He is survived by his son Weston Scott Sheppard, his mother Lisa Wakefield and husband Gary, father Clint Sheppard, grandparents, June and Otto Eugene Atherton, great grandmother Eva Atherton, sisters, Shelby and Victoria Sheppard, uncle Micah Atherton and wife KC and daughter Gabriel, uncle David Atherton and wife Kristin and children Brody, Avery and Coley, aunt Courtney Atherton Russell and husband Brendon and daughter Jadlynne, aunt Heather Atherton Douty and husband Danny.
A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 7 PM Wednesday at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Kansas. The family suggests contributions to the Charles Atherton-Sheppard Memorial Fund. Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider, Pleasanton, Kansas.

Harold Arthur Andrews

Harold Arthur Andrews, age 89, of Pleasanton, Kansas died Sunday March 2, 2008 at Mercy Health Center , Fort Scott, Kansas. He was born on February 14, 1919 in LaCygne, Kansas the son of Otis and Lora Bible Andrews. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He also was a member of VFW. Harold was a farmer in Linn County, and also worked at the Dari Curl in La Cygne, and worked at the State Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Andrews on January 10, 2008, and a stepdaughter Dorothy Mathias. Survivors include grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Brooklyn cemetery , La Cygne, Kansas. Arrangements Coffel-Schneider, La Cygne, Kansas.

Roy A. Felix Sr

Roy A. Felix Sr., age 76, of Pleasanton, Kansas died Saturday March 1, 2008 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. He was born on September 11, 1931 in Kansas City, Kansas the son of Antonio and Mildred Hare Felix. Roy worked as a truck driver for Roadway Express before retirement. He married Margaret Green on August 17, 1950 at Kansas City, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2006. Also preceding him were two sisters, Lucille Richardson and Pauline Oropeza. Roy was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church and the Teamsters Union. He is survived by a son Roy Felix Jr. of Prescott, Kansas, three daughters: Regina Hamilton of Mound City, Kansas, Lutricia Felix and Paula McClintock both of Kansas City, Kansas, six brothers: Richard, Robert, Raymond, Dean, Frank Felix all of Kansas City, Kansas and Carmello Felix of El Paso, Texas, one sister Mildred Winters of Pleasanton, ten grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday March 5, 2008 at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Pleasanton, Kansas. Burial will be in the Pleasanton Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12 noon until service time. The family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Hospice House. Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider, Pleasanton, Kansas.

Vera Mae Murray

Vera Mae Murray, formerly of Mound City, Kansas died February 29, 2008, at Eastwood Manor in Commerce, Oklahoma, at the age of 80. She was born on August 14, 1927 in Guthrie, Oklahoma, to parents Elwood and Armintha (Towle) Stanbrough.
She moved from Mound City, Kansas to Miami, Oklahoma to be near her daughter and family.
Vera graduated from Mound City High School in 1945 and attended Pittsburg State Teachers College. She was a teacher, homemaker, and bookkeeper, employed at the Pleasanton, KS elevator from 1968-1978 and was City Clerk in Mound City from 1983 to 1991.
Vera was married to Herman LaVern Murray on Dec. 21, 1946. He preceded her in death on April 7, 1997. Also preceding her in death was a sister Ruth Harlow of Mound City, and two brothers Lloyd Stanbrough and Eugene Stanbrough of Mound City. She is survived by one sister, Shirley Stanbrough of Kansas City, Mo; three daughters Marilyn and husband Lanny Hall of Yellville, AR; Tana and husband Charles Beard of Miami, OK; and Martha Smedberg of Newark, CA; six grandchildren Landon Hall and wife Cristine Gonzalez, Casey (Hall) Buonaugurio and husband Mark, Lauren (Beard) Palmer and husband Joe, Chris Beard and wife Heather, Nick Lash, and Jason Lash; and three great granddaughters Isabella, Madeleine, and Katherine.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday March 3, 2007 at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City, Kansas. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery, Mound City. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 PM Sunday at the Coffel-Schneider Funeral Home in Mound City. The family suggests contributions to Hospice of Kansas.
Arrangements: Coffel-Schneider, Mound City, Kansas.
