Betty Mertes
Betty O’Neal Mertes, 83, of Conway Springs, Kan., died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008 at Via Christi-St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas.
Rosary was 7 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 17, and funeral Mass was 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, both at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Father Thomas Hoisington as Celebrant.
Survivors include sons, Herald O’Neal of Conway Springs, Kan.; Jerry O’Neal of Clearwater, Kan.; Greg O’Neal of Wellington, Kan.; three daughters, Diann Roth of Conway Springs; Janet Schaefer of Meriden, Kan.; Jacqueline Gates of Colwich, Kan.; one stepson Ronald Mertes of Conway Springs; one stepdaughter, Judy Mertes of California; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great great grandson.
Memorials have been established with the St. Joseph School or the Conway Springs Volunteer Ambulance.

Ravenna Owens
Ravenna H. (Cavener) Owens, 72, formerly of Cheney, retired president of the Wesley Credit Union, died Feb. 14, 2008 at Prairie Sunset Home, Pretty Prairie, Kan.
She was born Oct. 15, 1935 in Duenweg, Mo., the daughter of Forrest and Pearl (Atkins) Cavener. In March of 1964 she was united in marriage to Keith E. Owens in Corte Medera, Calif.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at the United Methodist Church, Cheney, with Rev. Dr. Kenton Van officiating.
Survivors include daughter Erica (Kevin) Hansen of Kingman, Kan., grandson Garic Hansen, sister, Glenda Hendricks of Novato, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established with the Scholarship Fund, United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 237, Cheney, KS 67025.

Harold Varenhorst
Harold K. Varenhorst, 84, Clearwater, retired Boeing supervisor, passed away Monday, Feb. 18, 2008. Visitation is from 9 a.m.-8p.m. Thursday at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Clearwater Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and brothers, Glen and Roy Varenhorst. He is survived by sister, Dorothy Sneed of Winfield; sister-in-law, Jeaninne Varenhorst of Georgia; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established with Clearwater Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 453, Clearwater, KS 67026. Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater, was in charge of arrangements.
Mary Bowlin
Mary Lavonne Bowlin, age 88, formerly of Newton and Towanda, farm wife and former school teacher, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2008.
Mary Lavonne Bowlin was the oldest of three children born to Augie Elton and Bertha Grace (Williams) Nelson. She was born at their home on September 1, 1919. Mary attended Sacket Grove Grade School, a one room school house, northwest of Clearwater and then graduated from Clearwater High School in 1937. While in grade and high school she was active in 4-H. Mary attended Phillips University and graduated with a teaching degree from Friends University. She taught at rural schools near Cheney. During World War II she worked in Washington, D.C. as a civilian for the Navy Department.
In 1946 she married
Homer H. Bowlin and they farmed near Mulvane and then Towanda. She taught school in the Towanda school system for many years. Upon retirement from farming they built a home in Towanda where they lived until she retired from teaching. Mary was a member of the Towanda Order of Eastern Star and served a term as the Worthy Matron.
Homer and Mary moved to Newton to enjoy their retirement. Upon experiencing health problems they moved to Spring View Manor in Conway Springs.
Graveside Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 6 at Whitewater Cemetery, Whitewater, Kan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Towanda United Methodist Church, 103 SW 40th St., Towanda, KS 67144.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Homer. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Adrian Eldon and Valeta Fern Nelson of Clearwater; brother, Melvin Max Nelson of Mulvane and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Freeman
Ruth A. (Demoret) Freeman, age 90, retired head housekeeper at Wellington Hospital, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008. Graveside services were held on Monday, March 3, at 10 a.m. at Clearwater Cemetery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles. Survivors include sons, James Brasher of Ozawkie, Kan.; Ronald Brasher, Robert Freeman and daughter, Glenda Herman, all of Wellington, Kan.; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater, was in charge of arrangements.
Richard A. “Dick” Funke
Richard A. “Dick” Funke, 73, died March 3, 2008, at his home in Kingman, Kan.
He was born June 12, 1934, at Garden Plain, Kan., the son of Charles and Rose Watson Funke. A lifetime resident of the Kingman community, he was a farmer and stockman.
He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Kingman.
In 1953, he married
Doris Brown; she died in 1976. On April 14, 1978, he married
Joyce Youngers at St. Leo, Kan. Other survivors include children Dan (Becky), Goddard, David, (Jodi), Kingman, Dawn Hoffman, Newton, Deb (Bob) Massey, Kingman, Marilyn (Frank) Janas, Palm Desert, Calif.; Gary Rohlman, Derby, Russell Rohlman, Wichita, Mark Rohlman, Valley Center, Lynanne (Jeff) DeGarmo, Valley Center; brother Joe, Prescott, Ariz; sisters Martha Wensinger, Carrolton, Texas, Cecilia Austin, Highlands Ranch, Colo.; 23 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by a son Jay Rohlman in 1993.
Parish rosary will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the St. Patrick Catholic Church, Kingman. Funeral mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Fr. Jim Weldon celebrant. Calling times were 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and will be 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman. Burial will be in the Walnut Hill Cemetery, Kingman.
Memorials may be made with the St. Patrick Church Building Fund and Harry Hynes Hospice, both in care of Livingston Funeral Home, 1830 N. Main, Kingman, Kan. 67068.
Janet Hunter
Janet M. (Warner) Hunter, 38, of 200 W. Park, Viola, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita.
A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, March 4, from the Viola Presbyterian Church, Viola, with the Rev. Shirley Barnum officiating. Visitation with family was Monday evening March 3, at Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs.
Survivors include husband Jim; daughter Erica of the home; stepchildren: Nathan Hunter; Lindsay Cornelson, Kelsey Hunter of Wichita; parents Ron and Barbara Warner of Viola; sister Bobbi Pauly of Conway Springs; grandmother Doris Warner of Viola.
Memorials can be made to the Viola Presbyterian Church, the Viola Baptist Church or to the Viola Little League.

Lewis Niles Kellogg, Jr.
Lewis Niles Kellogg, Jr., age 56, builder/remodeler, passed away Feb. 23, 2008.
He was born on March 8, 1951 in Cambridge, Mass. He moved to Kansas at the age of 12 where he attended Wichita, Robertson and Clearwater Schools. He enlisted in USN (Seabee’s) 1971-1975. He then moved to Chanute, Kan., where he resided for the past 33 years operating Kellogg Construction in Chanute. Lewis was known for his excellent craftsmanship, his concern for stray animals, especially dogs, and his generous willingness to help others. He will be dearly missed by those that knew and loved him.
He is survived by his parents, Lewis, Sr. and Irline (Ellsworth) Kellogg, sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Ray Winter, all of Clearwater; nephews, Christopher S. Reiser, Kevin B. Reiser, Jason S. Kellogg, Jeremy P. Kellogg, Matthew N. Kellogg. Private family services were held. A memorial has been established with the American Diabetes Association, 837 S. Hillside, Wichita, KS 67211.

Raymond Patterson
Raymond Hugh Patterson, age 89, of Clearwater, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008.
He was born July 12, 1918 in El Dorado, Kan., the third of four children born to Hugh and Ruby Ethel (McNary) Patterson. He attended school in El Dorado.
Before his 20th birthday, he would stand in line at the refinery in El Dorado for work. Due to lack of work at the refinery, he decided to join CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp), July 8, 1938 in Kingman, Kan. His record of service documented that he worked at Alcester, S. D., Kelvin, N.D., and his last camp in Hot Springs, Ark., that ended June 25, 1940.
On July 10, 1940, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Kansas City, Mo. Raymond was stationed in Hawaii during the Pearl Harbor attack. He also participated in the occupation of Japan. He served a total of six years when he was Honorably Discharged, as a Sergeant on July 9, 1946.
On Oct. 12, 1946, Raymond was united in marriage to Clara “Alice” Bowmaker in St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Long Beach, Calif.
They moved back to Kansas and lived with his sister, Pauline Nelson. Raymond, with the help of his brother-in-law, Floyd, built their home on two acres that they had purchased in Wichita.
Raymond had a dream to be a farmer, and because of that dream, he and his wife later built their home on 80 acres of land northwest of Clearwater, and eventually purchased even more land for farming.
To supplement the farm income, he worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as an electrician and worked at different job sites such as Missile Bases, Boeing, local high schools, hospitals, and the General Electric Plant in Winfield.
Together, Raymond and Alice raised six children: Bill, Beverly, Gregory, Eric, Mark, and Mary. Gregory died as an infant from encephalitis. Mark was killed in a motorcycle accident on his way to school at the age of 16.
The couple had many happy years together and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 12, 1996.
A Rosary was held on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008 at 7 p.m. at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel in Clearwater. A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clonmel, Kan. Memorials have been established with St. John’s Catholic Church, 18630 W. 71st St., Viola, KS 67149 and Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita KS 67202.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Alice on March 10, 2005; two sons, Gregory and Mark; sisters, Doris Hein and Pauline Nelson. He will deeply be missed by his four surviving children: Bill Patterson (Terri) of Rancho Cordova, Calif., Beverly (Don) Shue of Clearwater, Eric Patterson of Viola, Kan., and Mary (Phil) Mast of Gunnison, Colo.; sister, Nadine Loetel of Kansas City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

John A. Wetta
John A. Wetta, 93, loving husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa, died March 2, 2008. Rosaries were scheduled for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 5. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 6, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colwich.
John was a retired farmer, stockman and Field Queen foreman. He was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Parish, Holy Name Society, and the Knights of Columbus.
John was preceded in death by his grandson, Jaron Barber; parents, Leo and Anna(Spexarth) Wetta; sister, Sister Mary Ann Wetta; brothers Joe, Alphonse, Leo, Ben, Albert.
John is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Pauline; daughters, Gerri (Paul) Hilger, Hutchinson, Becky (Hugh) Nicholson, Sue (Russell) Kessler, Rita (Denny) Kerschen, Goddard; Linda (Bill) Wapelhorst, Paula (Paul) Kear, Colwich; sons Vince (Marilyn), Wellington, Greg (Deb), Steve (Melanie), Gene (Diana), Dick, Wichita; sister, Anna Bergkamp, Colwich; 38 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Memorials have been established with Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Parkinson’s Association.

Elizabeth Leis
Elizabeth “Betty” (Jansen) Leis, 69, retired R.N., of Garden Plain, died April 10, 2008 in Wichita.
She was born October 6, 1938, in Maize, Kan., the daughter of William M. and Theresa M. (Thimmesch) Jansen. On May 4, 1963, she was united in marriage to David Leis. He survives. Other survivors include, sons, Paul “Buck” (Vickie) Leis of Wichita, Darin (Brenda) Leis of Garden Plain; daughters, LuAnn (Gary) Sauber of Wichita, Laura Leis of Austin, Texas; brothers, Albert Jansen of Colwich, Kan., Leeroy Jansen of Wichita; sisters, Delores F. Becker of Conway Springs, Lois A. Becker of Cunningham, Kan., sister-in-law, Carol Jansen of Wichita; two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Marvin Jansen.
Rosary was 7 p.m. Sunday, April 13, and funeral service was 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 14, both at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain, with Father Samuel Pinkerton officiating. Interment was at St. Anthony Cemetery.
A memorial has been established with Garden Plain Pro-life Outreach, or St. Anthony Catholic Church.
