William F. (Bill) Hurst

William F. (Bill) Hurst, son of Fahy and Mina Hurst, brother to Carol Chiles, born Sept. 3, 1927 in Caldwell Kan., went ahead Thursday, May 1, 2008 to be with his savior, Jesus Christ. He is survived by his wife and true love, Betty Lou Hurst, Port Aransas, Texas, son, William F. Hurst III, Goddard; daughters, Julie Kay Wade and Susan Gail Stubbs, both of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Dani, Karissa, Will, Matt, Mary Beth, Brittany, Charlie; daughter-in-law, Beth E. Hurst; sons-in-law, James L. Wade and Robert E. Stubbs, and faithful companions, Britches and Spike.

Bill was a Tau Kappa Epsilon that graduated at Kansas State University on the GI Bill after serving his country in the Navy during WWII. He was a purchasing agent for Boeing where he met bride to be Betty. Bill and family started Wm. F. Hurst Co., Inc. in 1962 and prospered because of faithful and honest service to his customers and staff. He still greatly enjoyed coming into the office to see his extended family.

Bill and Betty fell in love with Arabian horses and were active in the Kansas Arabian Horse Society where Bill served as President for many years. He loved to hunt, fish, ride his horse, Sonny, tell stories and have lunch every Tuesday at the Scotch and Sirloin with his lunch buddies.

Bill and Betty snow-birded in Port Aransas, Texas and moved down full time last spring where they have many friends, all of which are considered part of the extended Hurst family. An Albert Pike Mason and Shriner, Bill was a friend to many and one of the best men the Lord ever blessed us with. We are all a little better because of him and a little less because he has gone ahead. Memorials have been established with: United Methodist Open Door, P.O. Box 2756, Wichita, KS 67201 and W.F. Evelyn Leis

Evelyn J. Leis, age 73, beautician, of Goddard passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2008. She was born March 7, 1935 in Goddard, Kan., the daughter of Raymond and Pauline (Wapelhorst) Schwartz. On May 15, 1954 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Leis in Colwich, Kan. She is survived by son Jeff (Ann) Leis of Oxford, Kan., and daughter Dana (Rick) May of Pagosa Springs, Colo., brother Linus Schwartz, and sister Rosina Rau, both of Colwich, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence.

Rosary was 7:30 May 7 and service is 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, both at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Samuel Pinkerton and Father Joseph Gile officiating. Interment is at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Aleppo, Kan.

Memorials have been established at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or the Lords Diner.

George Obrock

George William Obrock, Sr., age 84, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008.

He was born on June 1, 1923 in St. Louis, Mo., to his parents, Dewey and Freida (Schmidt) Jones. He entered the United States Army Air Force in 1943, during World War II, serving a little over two years.

On July 4, 1946 he was united in marriage to Vallerie F. Elsworth in St. Louis. He worked as a bell captain at the Lassen Hotel and as a salesman for Dairy Bell, Hinneman’s Food and F&E Wholesale Foods in Wichita, with routes throughout Kansas. In 1956, he served as a Clearwater police captain. He was also a former owner/operator of Copa Kitchen in Kingman, Kan. Upon retirement he and Vallerie moved to Arkansas. After her death he lived in Cottonwood Falls, Kan., Liberal, Kan., and of late, the Cherry Village Nursing Home, in Great Bend, Kan. George was a loving and dedicated family man, who cared for people and loved God.

Memorial services were held 10 a.m., Saturday, May 3, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel in Clearwater. A memorial has been established with Cherry Village Nursing Home, 1401 Cherry Lane, Great Bend, KS 67530.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Vallerie; his parents, brothers, Clyde Tuttle and Arthur Obrock. He is survived by his children: Bill Obrock, Jr. of Dodge City, Kan., Bud and Rex Obrock, both of Kingman, Jerry Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz., Linda Price of Rogers, Ark.; Tammy Williams of Los Angeles, Calif., sister, Dorothy Bradshaw of Dupo, Ill.; brother, Edward Obrock of Golden, Mo; 18 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater was in charge of arrangements.

James Rausch

James (Jim) Edward Rausch, 52, maintenance supervisor at Tweeco Products and facilities manager at Precision Pattern, of Garden Plain, passed away on May 1, 2008. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 33 years, Beverly (Weber); daughters, Melissa (Walter) Bleser of Kansas City, Mo., Jannessa (fiancé Matthew Moore) of Shawnee, Kan.; son, Patrick of Manhattan, Kan., parents, Francis and Theresa Rausch; brothers, Mick (Nancy) of Garden Plain, Tom (Donna) of Viola, Don (Laurie) of Ocoee, Fla.; sisters Barb (Jim) Littell of Stillwater, Okla., and Mary (Jeff) Richardson of Viola. He was preceded in death by his mother, JoNell (Petroski) Rausch.

Rosary was 7:30 p.m. May 4 and service was 10:30 a.m., Monday, May 5, both at St. Anthony’s, Garden Plain. Memorials may be sent to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita KS 67202.

Paul Bohning, III

Paul Bohning, III, age 53, devoted father, son and brother, Master of Spades, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008 in Henderson, Nev. Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, May 16, 2008 at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel, Clearwater, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Bohning, Jr.; infant daughter, Alexa. Survivors: mother, Nadine Bohning of Wichita; son, Paul Bohning, IV, of Wichita; brother, Scott (Jean) Bohning of Wichita; sisters, Ann (Lindsay) Dawe of Henderson, Nev., Joy (Jed Rowley) Bohning of Albuquerque, N.M.

Wilfred Dold

Wilfred S. Dold (Willie), 80, beloved brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away peacefully after a long illness and courageous battle on May 15, 2008. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Willie was born Jan. 31, 1928 in Colwich, Kan. to Herman and Katherine Freund Dold. Upon graduation from Andale High School, he volunteered in the United States Navy and proudly served on the USS Shangri-La (CV 38), in the Pacific Theatre with duty in the Marianna Islands on Guam, Tinian and Saipan. He received the WWII Victory Medal, Asian Occupation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon his return from military service, he married Patricia Hays. They were married 58 years, five months, 26 days and now for eternity.

Willie was a long-time farmer and rancher in the Andale, Colwich and Garden Plain, Kan. area. He was a steward of the land and loved every moment and the opportunity to farm. He was a true son of Kansas from “the country of small towns and big churches.” He was committed to the preservation and the economy of these small communities and served on the Renwick School Board and the Garden Plain Coop Board of Directors. He was an avid supporter of Andale and Garden Plain High School sports and a regular attendant at all of his children and grandchildren’s sporting events.

He had a lifelong interest in the children of these communities, took pride in their accomplishments and was a source of encouragement to them to excel in the pursuit of their life dreams.

Surviving are his loving wife, Patricia, and children, Mark (Donna), Raleigh, N.C.; Greg, Vancouver, Wash.; Neal, Cheney, Kan.; Dian (Tim) Pauly, Hutchinson, Kan.; Roch (Linda), Overland Park, Kan.; Kent (Jennifer), Pensacola, Fla.; Kurt, Garden Plain, Kan.; Joan (Mark) Pauly, Viola, Kan.; 33 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Willie is also survived by his sister, Alfreda Passaglia, Littleton, Colo. He was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Dold, Colwich, Kan.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the physicians at Hutchinson Clinic/Hospital, Hutchinson, Kan. and the caregivers at Riverside Village and Harry Hynes Hospice, Wichita, Kan. The professionalism and personal kindness with dignity shown our brother, father and loving husband has been exemplary and reassuring to our family.

Rosary was held at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain, Kan., on May 19. The funeral mass was held on Tuesday, May 20 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain. Burial followed in St. Anthony Cemetery, Garden Plain.

Memorials may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202 and the Renwick Education Foundation, 600 West Rush, P.O. Box 68, Andale, KS 67001-0068.

Danny Ervin

Danny Joe Ervin, 45, process operator for Air Products & Chemicals, and owner of D&D Repair, of Cheney, died May 19, 2008 at Wesley Medical Center. He was born Oct. 25, 1962 in Phillipsburg, Kan., the son of Johnny and Doris (Brooks) Ervin. On Sept. 19, 1981 he was united in marriage to Diane Leiker in Phillipsburg, Kan. Survivors include his wife Diane Ervin, sons, Daniel and Derek, all of the home, sister, Melody Ervin of Lawrence, Kan., and his parents.

Visitation is Thursday, May 22, from 7 to 8 p.m. with the family present, and service is 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 23 at Cheney Baptist Church with Pastor Mark Ogle officiating. Burial is at Fairview cemetery in Cheney.

Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 1653, Topeka, KS 66601-1653. Lanterman Funeral Home, Cheney, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Heier

Mary M. Heier, 73, of Grainfield, Kan., died May 18, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. She was born July 2, 1934 on a farm south of Park, Kan., the daughter of Wendelin and Suzanna (Ochs) Hartman.

On Aug. 2, 1958, she was united in marriage to Francis X. Heier in Grainfield, Kan. Survivors include daughters LeAnn (Virgil) Kuntz of Scott City, Sheila (Roger) Bieberle of Wichita, Vicky (Brad) Joseph of Oakley, Kan., Jacky (Keith) Zerr of Gove, Kan., Shirley Haffner of Park, Kan., Raelene (Cory) Miller of Cheney; brother, Johnny Hartman of St. Joseph, Mo.; sisters, Helen Grace of St. Joseph, Mo., Florence Goetz of Park, Kan.; 19 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Francis, infant son, Leland Francis Heier and brothers Anthony, LeRoy and Tom Hartman.

Funeral is 10:30 Thursday, May 22 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Grainfield, Kan. Interment is at Grainfield Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Mary M. Heier Memorial Fund, c/o Schmitt Funeral Home, 901 S. Main, Quinter KS 67752.

Ralph Pauly

Ralph A. Pauly, 86, farmer and dairyman, of Garden Plain, died Sept. 29, 2008. He was born Oct. 19, 1921 in Clonmel, Kan., the son of Cyril A. and Frances (Jaax) Pauly. On May 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to Doris Dwyer in Clonmel, Kan.

Survivors include his wife, Doris, of the home, sons, Kenneth (Marilyn) Pauly of Wichita, Keith (Carol) Pauly of Clearwater, Ralph, Jr. (Margie) of Woodland Park, Colo., Timothy M.D. (Dian) Pauly of Hutchinson, Kan., Jerry (Cindy) Pauly of Garden Plain; daughter, Dorale (Galen) Gerlach of Mulvane, Kan., brother, Dean Pauly of Viola, Kan.; grandchildren, Alyssa and Jeb Graham, Tonya and Jeff Caldwell, Angie and Rob Bensman, Tara and Greg Sherich, Doug and Stacy Pauly, Brian Pauly, Kim and Danny Ball, Scott Pauly, Chad Pauly, Kayla Harris, Kirsten Pauly, Kurt Pauly, Trae Gerlach, Gage Gerlach; great-grandchildren, Lydia Graham, Katelyn Caldwell, Jake Caldwell, Will Bensman, Tyson Sherich, Sam Ball, Lillian Harris.

Rosary was Wednesday, Oct. 1 and service is 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, both at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain, with Father Samuel Pinkerton officiating. Interment is at St. Anthony Cemetery.

Memorials have been established with St. Anthony Catholic Church or G.P. Senior/Gateway Foundation. Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Garden Plain, is in charge of arrangements.

Donna Veith

Donna S. Veith, 75, mobile home salesperson, of Wichita, died Sept. 29, 2008. She was born April 21, 1933, the daughter of Minor Powers and Catherine Smarsh.

Survivors include son, William (Julie) Veith, Wichita, Kan.; daughter, Emma (Bill) Carpenter, Douglass, Kan.; two grandsons, three great-grandchildren.

Rosary is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at St. Anne Catholic Church, Wichita, with Father Tom Leland officiating. Service is at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, also at St. Anne Catholic Church.

Michael Betzen

Michael William Betzen, formerly of Andale, passed away on Dec. 13, 2008. Funeral service was held Dec. 16 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Hereford, Texas.

He is survived by his brother M.J. “Bud” Betzen of Andale, brother Joe Betzen of Iola, Kan., and sister Anna Ridder, Leoti, Kan.

Walter Lauer

Walter J. Lauer, age 86, farmer and dairyman, of Clearwater, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008.

Walter was born on April 27, 1922 in Blaine, Kan. He was the first of six children born to his parents, Antone Phillip Lauer and Martha Mary Hemmen Lauer. Mr. Lauer served his country in the U.S. Army

On Nov. 15, 1949, he was united in marriage to Bernadine Catherine Simon in St. Mark, Kan. They made their home on the farm near Clearwater and lived there all of their married life. He was a farmer and worked his own dairy farm, and also was an Asgrow Seed dealer. He enjoyed wood working and model trains.

Mr. Lauer was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Clonmel, Knights of Columbia Assembly #0287, Clonmel/Schulte Knights of Columbus #3114, American Legion and National Farmers Organization.

A Rosary was held 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, and a funeral Mass was held 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, both at St. John’s Catholic Church in Clonmel. Memorials have been established in his name with St. John’s Catholic Church, 18630 W. 71st St., So., Viola, KS 67149, and with Alzheimer’s Disease Research Foundation, 1236 Ginger Crescent, Virginia Beach, VA 23453.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kathleen Grist; son, Keith Lauer. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Bernadine “Catherine” Lauer; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Josephine Lauer of Clearwater, Earl and Sherry Lauer, Ronald and Catherine Lauer all of Wichita, Daniel and Melissa Lauer of Clearwater; daughters and sons-in-law, Bernice and William Martling of Whitewater, Kan., Diane and Kevin Denning of Wichita; siblings and their spouses, Linus and Mary Lou Lauer, Geraldine and Alfred Steiner, Winifred and Lawrence Albert, Ambrose and Veronica Lauer, Bernetta and Paul Girrens, all of Wichita.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.

Howard Lindholm

Howard B. Lindholm, 83 of Fort Collins passed away Dec. 7. He was born April 25, 1925 in Wichita.

He grew up on a farm near Cheney. He attended high school in Cheney and went on to graduate from Kansas State University with a degree in Agriculture and Animal Science in 1949.

He met Lorine Fieser at KSU and they were married June 6th of 1948. Howard and Lorine were blessed with 60 years together and celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with family in June. After they were married, he taught Veterans Farm Training in the Cheney area for five years.

He moved to Fort Collins in 1954 to pursue a Masters degree in Animal Genetics at CSU, graduating in 1957. Howard worked with a U.S. Aid project through CSU to help establish an agricultural college in Pakistan from 1959-1963. After returning from Pakistan and working a short time at Woodward Governor he farmed NW of Fort Collins raising hogs and chickens. He operated the Big Willow Poultry Farm from 1969-80.

He was active as a 4-H leader with his four children for 15 years and was also very active with the Larirner County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife Lorine, daughter Charlotte of Oregon, son Wayne and wife Linda of California, son Dale and wife Connie of Fort Collins and daughter Marcia and husband Russ Rhoads also of Fort Collins, and eight grandchildren. Howard is also survived by seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15th at First Baptist Church, in Fort Collins, where Howard and Lorine were longtime members, Godly examples and faithful servants.

Interment was at Grandview cemetery following the service.
