Mary Shannon-Aue

Mary D. Shannon-Aue, age 61, of Clearwater, farmer-humanitarian, writer, animal rescuer, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008.

Mary Dalmakay Shannon was born on July 9, 1947 in Redlands, Calif., to her parents, David Randolph and Alma Lucille (Furman) Shannon. Her early years were spent in California, until the death of her father in 1951. Soon after, little Mary and her mother moved to the rural Clearwater home of her grandparents, Ernest and Freda (Gustafson) Furman.

Mary’s early years on the farm west of Clearwater were filled with all kinds of learning experiences. She thrived in this rural setting and her love for nature and God’s creatures was born. Mary enjoyed listening to the reminiscing of times past by her grandparents and great aunts and uncles, starting a lifelong interest in history and antiques.

In July of 1964, Mary acquired older siblings: a step-sister, Clarice, and two step-brothers, John R. and Jay; when Alma married her high school sweetheart, widower, John J. Ohnemiller.

Following graduation from Clearwater High School in 1965, Mary attended college for several years, continuing to explore a variety of interests. Through the years, Mary successfully mastered many skills, such as: leather tooling, rock polishing, knitting, crocheting, embroidering, sewing (many times designing her own elaborate patterns), and literary writing (publishing “The Christian’s ‘Cuss’ Book” in 1996) to name a few.

For whatever reasons, lasting relationships alluded Mary. Her three failed marriages: Lonnie Isbell, Jerry Doris, and Larry Aue, while not enduring, all achieved pleasant times with happy memories.

A continuing element throughout Mary’s entire life was her love of animals. Following her mother’s death in 1997, sensing her inner calling, Mary became involved with dogs, focusing on animal rescue.

A Rosary was held at 6 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 10. A funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008 both at St. John’s Catholic Church, Clonmel. Memorials can be made to St. John’s Catholic Church, 18630 W. 71st So, Viola, KS 67149.

In ending, Mary shall be remembered as a generous, multi-talented, strong willed individual with a love for God and His creatures. Mary left an indelible mark on this world and will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her.
