Wayne Kohler

Wayne Kohler, 88, passed away on Wednesday, November 23, 2011.

Wayne was born June 25, 1923 in Cheney to George and Minnie Dora (Schierenbeck) Kohler. Wayne attended the Cheney schools graduating in 1941. He was a life-long resident of Cheney. On October 17, 1954 he married Doris Ilene Pray.

Wayne worked as a dairyman, farmer and stockman and also retired from Cessna Aircraft in 1989. Wayne was a member of the Trinity United Christian Church. He served on the consistory Board of the Trinity Reformed Church. He served on the Board of the Cheney Coop for several years, and served several years on the Pioneer cemetery Trustees. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clyde and Vernon Kohler.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ilene, of the home in Cheney. Their three children, Margaretta (Rick) Chitwood of Mayfield; Terry (Susan) Kohler of Cheney, Eddie (Elaine) Kohler of Cheney; 13 grandchildren, Ryan (Melanie) Chitwood of Mayfield, Robyn (Zach) Zoglmann of Conway Springs, Rodney (Mattie) Chitwood of Mayfield, and Rachelle Chitwood of Mayfield; Tyler Kohler of Boulder, Colo., Brady Kohler of Lincoln, Neb., Patrick (Janelle) Kohler of San Antonio, Texas, Robby Kohler of Cheney, Cody and Karlee Kohler of Garden Plain, Dakota and Hunter Kohler of Phillipsburg and Elyssa Kohler of Cheney; eight great-grandchildren, Rosalyn, Zane and Zayden Zoglmann, Miranda, Russell and Raylee Chitwood, and Matthew and Mariella Kohler, and sister Dorothy Guestchow of Cheney. Honoree family members, Stephan, Cora, Lakin, and Riley Petz.

Services were held Saturday, November 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Christian Church in Cheney.

Arrangements were made by Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain. Memorials can be made out to Harry Hynes Memorial or Trinity United Christian Church.

Carol Wise

Carol G. (Tjaden) Wise, 92, of Clearwater, farm wife and talented China painter, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011. Graveside services were held at 9 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 26, at Greenwood Cemetery, Oatville, followed by a memorial service at Clearwater United Methodist Church at 11 am.

Carol was born March 4, 1919, in Clearwater, Kan. She was the second of five children born to her parents, Herman L. Tjaden and Osa Germaine (Leedom) Tjaden. Carol was united in marriage to L. Donald Wise on May 4, 1941, in Clearwater. He preceded her in death on Sept. 2, 1993.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, Osa and Herman Tjaden, Sr.; siblings, Herman Tjaden, Jr., and Elsie Steiner. Survivors include her sons, Philip (Donna) Wise, Sidney (Sandy) Wise, and Steven (Maureen) Wise, all of Clearwater; daughter, Donna Lou Wohler of Garden Plain; sisters, Kathleen Mourning of Clearwater, and Mary Lou Morrison of Casper, Wyo.; sister-in-law, Vada Ruth Tjaden; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Clearwater UMC, PO Box 157, Clearwater KS 67026, and Clearwater American Legion Post 93, c/o Lewis Kellogg, 411 S. 2nd, Clearwater, KS 67026.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Phillip Thomas

Phillip D. Thomas, age 55, of Clearwater, retired Air Force Sgt., died Thursday, November 10, 2011.

A Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m., on Monday, November 14, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Haysville. Phillip is survived by his wife of 31 years, Consuelo; his mother, Alice of Kansas City (formerly of Haysville); sons, Charles (Yoko) Thomas of Ladera Ranch, California, Michael (Jessica) Thomas of Arnold, Maryland; daughter, Alice (Martin) Loftus of Crownsville, Maryland; brothers, David (Pam) Thomas of Kansas City, Missouri, Steve (Cheryl) Thomas of Jefferson City, Missouri; grandchildren, Alex, Christopher, Savannah and Michelle Thomas, Marissa and Christian Loftus.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Roger Wentworth

Roger N. Wentworth, 69, retired Boeing Machinist, died Tuesday, November 8, 2011. Services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, November 11, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary.

Memorials: Kansas Food Bank, 1919 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67211 or Union Rescue Mission, 2800 N. Hillside,Wichita, KS 67219 . Roger was born July 23, 1942 in Wichita, Kansas. He was one of 3 children born to his parents, Garold Eugene “Tubby” Wentworth and Mary Louise (Dunn) Miller. He was united in marriage to Janeva “Jan” L. Burkhead on October 17, 1969 in Wichita, Kansas. Preceded by: father, Garold “Tubby” Wentworth; Survivors; wife, Jan; mother, Mary Miller, Clearwater; children: Mike (Dianne) Clearwater, Dwayne (Nelda), Cheney, Dean (Kay), El Dorado, Aldon (Cynthia), Derby; Tammy (Rick) Seglem, Kaw City, OK, Aislynn Wentworth, Wichita; Sisters, Gail Fent, Tulsa, OK., Renee (Van) Tjaden, Clearwater. 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater, was in charge of arrangements.

Juanita Gross

Juanita M. Gross, 90, farmwife, passed away Sunday, Nov 20, 2011.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, with family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., and services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23, both at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel, Clearwater.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Weir Gross, Jr.; parents, Irvin and Anna Shay; brother, Linn Shay; and sister Maxine Dobrovolny. Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn (Julian) Lauterbach of Clearwater; grandchildren, Kurtis (Peggy) Lauterbach of Clearwater, and Kristy (Roger) Pfeifer of Hays; and great-grandchildren, Kolby Lauterbach and Savannah Pfeifer.

Memorials will be at Clearwater Emergency Volunteers, P.O. Box 453 Clearwater, KS, 67026.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Roberta Hare

Roberta M. Hare, 81, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at Sug’s Home Care, Conway Springs, where she had been a resident since March 16, 2007.

Roberta was born Aug., 21, 1930 at Norwich, Kan., the daughter of Clayton Charles Miller and Ruby J. Schoonover. She moved along with her family to Conway Springs at the age of 5 years. She was reared by her father and step-mother Marie Ella Blackburn in Conway Springs and attended Conway Springs public schools. Roberta graduated from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1948.

Roberta was united in marriage to Dean Norman Nighswonger on Sept. 18, 1948 at Wichita, Kan. To this union three children were born: Michael Dean, Cathy Mae and Marie Elaine.

Roberta worked in the aircraft industry for over 23 years. She began at Cessna Aircraft and later worked for Lear Jet as an upholsterer until her retirement in February of 1994.

Roberta later married Alfred Theodore Hare on February 15, 1998 at Conway Springs. They made their home East of Conway Springs. Alfred died Jan. 2, 2000.

Roberta was a member of the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Opal Wheeler; and one son, Michael Nighswonger.

Roberta is survived by two daughters, Cathy Brown and husband Calvin of Katy, Texas, and Marie Troup of Conway Springs; one step-daughter, Sherry Bender and husband Dan of Conway Springs; one brother, Clayton Miller of Atchison, Kan.; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 12, at the United Methodist Church, Conway Springs, with Rev. Michael Roberts, pastor, officiating. Interment was in Conway Springs Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs.

Memorials have been established to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Victor Simon

Victor Simon, 75, passed away November 10, 2011.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Simon of Garden Plain; sons Chris (Barb) Simon of Bellevue, Neb., John (Kathy) Simon of Sedgwick, Bill (Cindy) Simon of Bellevue, Neb., Tony (Nikki) Simon of Braman, Okla., Joe (Terri) Kerschen of Tulsa, Okla., John Kerschen of Garden Plain, Jack (Steffey) Kerschen of Kingman; daughters Karen (Scott) Mathia of Wichita, Debbie Addison of Wichita, Linda (Rick) Wyly of Wichita, Deanna (Jerry) Zoglman of Viola; brothers Lyle (Gerry) Simon of Wichita, David Simon of Wellington; 33 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.

The Rosary was held Sunday, November 13 at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Garden Plain. The Funeral Mass was held Monday, November 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Garden Plain.

Interment was held at St. Anthony cemetery in Garden Plain.

Arrangements were made by Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain.

Pauline Smith

Pauline Smith of Cheney, 101, died on Nov. 8, 2011, in Cheney, Kansas. She was born Aug. 26, 1910 in Kingman County to Paul and Flora Ryniker, who farmed near Norwich. She received her primary education at the Glendale Country School and graduated from Norwich High School in 1928. She then attended Wichita Business College.

On May 11, 1929, she was united in marriage to Karl Smith at the Methodist Parsonage in Kingman. They made their first home near Norwich with Karl’s parents, Willis and Lucy Smith. They farmed in western Kansas for two years before moving west of Cheney. In 1939, they moved to the Paul Ryniker home place north of Norwich, where they farmed until they retired in 1969. In 1970, they bought a summer home on Table Rock Lake near Shell Knob, Mo., where they lived for 10 years. They moved to Cheney in 1980, where Pauline lived until her death.

Pauline was active in the Methodist Church at Norwich and Cheney. She attended church circles, sewed on quiet books and baked pies for the county fair. She was in a birthday club, bridge clubs and extension club. Visiting with friends and neighbors brought her great joy. She was an avid KU basketball fan. Her love of sewing included knitting, embroidery and quilting. She was a fabulous cook.

She is survived by two daughters, Karlene Skillen and her husband Jim of Cheney, and Karen Batie and her husband Bruce of Broomfield, Colo.; two grandsons, Jim Skillen and his wife Amy of Rock Port, Mo., and Brad Skillen of Wichita; two granddaughters, Sarah Wakefield and her husband Mark of Lakewood, Colo., and Amy Nobach and her husband Trent of Grand Rapids, Mich.; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Farris of Edmond, Okla.; as well as many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl, in 1986, and by a granddaughter-in-law Eileen Skillen.

Memorial services for Pauline Smith will be conducted from the United Methodist Church of Cheney on Monday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m.

Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Churches of Norwich or Cheney or the Cheney Golden Age Home.

The Lanterman Funeral Home of Cheney is in charge of arrangements.

Vera Wallace

The graveside service for Vera (Yarberry) Wallace, 81, of Fairview, Okla., will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, at Clearwater cemetery in Clearwater, Kan., with Pastor Joe Rogers officiating. Interment will follow. Born June 11, 1930, Yarberry died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 at Fairview, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Wanda (Bates) Yarberry; and her husband, Glenn. Survivors include her twin sister Verna Culver of Fairview, Okla.; several nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

Linda Danjou

Linda Muriel (True) Danjou was born October 11, 1947 in Wichita, Kan., and departed this life on October 26, 2011 at John Knox Village Hospice House at the age of 64 years and 11 days. Linda was the daughter of Clarence Wendell and Margaret Pearl (lucas) True. She grew up and graduated high school in Clearwater, Kansas.

On September 16, 1967 Linda was united in marriage with Richard F. “Dick” Danjou at the Clearwater United Methodist Church and to this union two sons were born. The Danjou family made their home in Merriam, Kan., until 1970 when they moved to Kansas City, Mo. and in June of 1978 they moved to Pleasant Hill, Mo.

Linda had been a patient account representative in several hospitals in the Jackson and Cass County area. She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Pleasant Hill and a member of the St. Bridget Altar Society.

Linda was a remarkable woman in many ways, she was very artistically talented and was a charter member of the Pleasant Hill Town and Country Art League as well as the league’s first president.

Despite her many health challenges, Linda maintained a positive attitude and her care and concern for those around her was remarkable. She was a loving mother and grandmother and her greatest pride was her family.

Linda and Richard had a 44-year marriage filled with ups and downs but their love, devotion and commitment to one another never waivered, and it was never so apparent as it was the last few years as Linda’s health declined and Richard was always there as the supportive and loving caregiver.

Linda was preceded in death by, her parents, Wendell and Pearl True and one sister, Barbara Simon.

She is survived by her loving husband, Richard F. Danjou of the home. Two sons, Scott R. Danjou and wife Luisa of Camp Lajune, Jacksonville, North Carolina and Kevin Danjou and wife Jennifer of Kansas City, Mo. One brother, Clair W. True of Clearwater, two sisters, Christine Robinson and Ann Leffingwell both of Clearwater, and two grandchildren, other relatives and many, many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 noon, Saturday, November 5, 2011 at St. Bridget Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Casket Bearers are Linda’s nephews, Keith Robinson, Matthew Simon, Greg Leffingwell, John Michael Leffingwell, Nick True and Vance True.

Mary Olive Jones

Mary Olive Jones, 96, of 209 N. Main, Argonia, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Spring View Manor, Conway Springs, KS where she had been a resident since Aug. 31, 2011.

She was born Mary Olive Hettick was born February 15, 1915 at Williamsburg, Kansas to Ray and Lona (Moore) Hettick. Mary Olive attended school at Belmont, Cheney and later Norwich, KS. She graduated from Norwich High School with the class of 1933.

Mary Olive was united in marriage to Melvin Earl Jones on June 13, 1933 at Medicine Lodge. They made their home near Norwich until 1938 when they moved to their farm northeast of Argonia.

Melvin died on June 8, 1983. Mary Olive later moved into Argonia in 1987.

Mary Olive was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister Betty Baynes and one brother Jack Hettick.

Mary Olive was a member of the United Methodist Church in Argonia. She enjoyed attending church and teaching Sunday School, which she did for many years.

Mary Olive is survived by three sons: Robert Jones and wife Joyce of Cheney, Ronald Jones of Kansas City, Fredrick Jones and wife Carolyn of Wellington; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 from the Argonia United Methodist Church, Argonia, with the Rev. Robbie Fall, officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery, Belmont, Kan. Arrangements were by Ebersole Mortuary, Conway Springs. On line condolences and guest book are available www.ebersolemortuary.com.

A memorial has been established to the Argonia United Methodist Church.
