Dorothy Mayer

Dorothy L. Mayer, daughter of Mr. Allen & Eva (Aunt) Allen was born July 27, 1926 in Duncan, Oklahoma.

She passed away Wednesday morning, January 11, 2012 in the Anthony Community Care Center at Anthony at the age of eighty-five years.

On July 8, 1954, Dorothy was united in marriage with Ralph Mayer in the Assembly of God Church.

The family made their home in Cheney and later Anthony for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph on April 17, 2009; and a daughter-in-law, Catherine Mayer.

Dorothy will be missed by her children, Roberta Fuqua and her husband, Bryan of Harper, and Wilson Lee Mayer and Howard Ross Mayer, both of Goddard; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; three sisters, Frances, Norma Jean and Barbara, all of Wichita; and other relatives and friends.

Graveside services for Dorothy will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 13, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Norwich, Kan. V. Bruce Smith will officiate.

Memorials in memory of Dorothy may be given to Anthony Community Care Center Anthony, Kan., and may be sent in care of Prairie Rose Funeral Home, 613 W. 14 Harper, KS 67058.

Lana Alexander

Lana S. (Marler) Alexander of Wichita, age 63, retired nurse, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012. Services were at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 11, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel, Clearwater.

She was preceded by her parents, William and Twyla Marler; and companion, Ken Geer, Sr. Survivors include her sons, Troy (Tana) Oliphant of Parkville, Mo., and Jerry (Kristen) Oliphant of Valley Center; daughter, Shannon Hiebert of Edmond, Okla.; sisters, Jan (Douglas) Enge and Billie Marler, both of Augusta; and grandchildren, Logan, Tatum, Cooper, Tru, and Bradi Oliphant.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research, 1 Chalmers Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506-3901.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Rosalie Bressler

Rosalie (Frischenmeyer) Bressler of Bothell, Wash., formerly of Wichita, retired from Boeing and former Wichita homicide detective, passed away Dec. 31, 2011.

Rosalie was born on May 7, 1942 in San Diego, Calif. She was the second of 14 children born to Anthony Fredrick Frischenmeyer and Mary Elizabeth Cooke Frischenmeyer. Rosalie’s passion was reading voraciously, cooking, sports, her family and her dogs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and Tony Frischenmeyer; brothers, Tony, Steve and Bob and sister Trudy Davis. She is survived by the love of her life, husband Dean Bressler of Bothell; children, Brett Graham (Dana), Michele Capps, Rebecca Williams (Robert); grandchildren, Ashley Graham, Jordan Gamble (Dan), Logan Graham (Shannon), Zach Cypert, Chris Capps, Samantha Williams, Kennedy Williams, Mary Beth Graham and Trey Williams; great-grandchildren, DJ and Jerika Gamble; and siblings, Ron (Diane), Teresa Huff (Harold), Carl, Mike, Maureen Kile (Dan), Jim, Roger (Jackie), Betty Callaway (Ron), Pauline (Sherri).

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14, at River Valley Community Church, 321 N, 4th St, Clearwater, with a celebration of her life to follow at the Clearwater Senior Center, 921 E. Janet Ave. Clearwater. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Robert Frischenmeyer Scholarship Fund, c/o Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, P.O.Box 325, Clearwater, KS 67026.

Aaron Keith Carver

Aaron Keith Carver, March 1923 - December 2011, resident of San Juan Capistrano.

After surviving 12 days in ICU, Keith passed away peacefully at Mission Hospital.

Aaron Keith was born and raised in Cheney, Kan., and graduated from North High School in Wichita. He attended Washington University School of Music in St. Louis, and was an accomplished tenor and musician performing on local radio stations and the St. Louis Municipal Opera. Keith later sang on Broadway in New York, Las Vegas, and performed on radio and television.

Army First Lieutenant Aaron Keith Carver served in North Africa, The Middle East, Australia and in the Pacific in World War II, from 1943 to 1946. He met his wife Mayme while stationed in “Base M” in the Philippines. They later married and settled in Southern California, where Keith entertained in many local nightclubs and wrote music. Keith and Mayme Carver raised three children, Mike, Kaaron and Casey. Keith later became a manager of many Ruben’s and Coco’s Restaurants in southern California. He later moved to the K-Mart Corporation where Keith retired at age 73 after losing his wife to cancer 18 years before his death.

He was the only child born to the late Paul and Hattie Carver, and was the beloved husband of Mayme Swank for over 40 years. Keith will forever be remembered by his beloved children Casey Carver and Kaaron Carver and caring cousins David and Enid Stuzman, Tommy and Eldon Coberly, Helen Beth Murdoch, Norma Lyerly, and Millie West-Wickham. He is also missed by many other countless other nieces and nephews, friends, trusted neighbors and family whom were blessed to know him. Keith loved playing the piano, writing and singing compositions, being with his family, hiking, skiing, camping and bicycle riding.

Keith touched the lives of many people with his smile and simple advice, and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial funeral service on Friday, January 13, at 11 am at Fairhaven Memorial Services, 27856 Center Drive, Mission Viejo, CA 92692. www.fairhavenmemorialservices.com.

A lunch will be served to all who attend after the service. Please let us know if you will be attending at the e-mail below. A military graveside service will be performed on Monday, Jan. 16, at the Riverside National Cemetery.

Kenneth Richardson

Kenneth Lee “Kenny” Richardson, 81, of Cheney, passed away, Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012.

Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Monday and funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 10, both at Trinity United Christian Church, Cheney. Burial followed at Resthaven Cemetery, Wichita.

Kenny was born in Cheney on Dec. 21, 1930, the son of the late Park and Lucy (Robinson) Richardson. He graduated from Cheney High School in 1948. Kenny retired from Boeing as a sheet metal fabrication general supervisor after 42 years. He served in the U.S. Marines, was a member of the Cheney American Legion Post 295, and a member of Clearwater Masonic Lodge.

On Jan. 25, 1951, he married Barbara Lee Zerener in Cheney. Kenny was preceded in death by Barbara, his wife of 48 years; a son, Kevin; and 14 siblings. Kenny is survived by his sister, Elnora “Gus” Eshnaur (Lester), Bentonville, Ark; children, Kurt Richardson (Susan) of Wichita, Kip Richardson (Lori) of Augusta, and Kenra Black (Paul) of Wichita; grandchildren, Sarah Reynolds (Joey), Travis, Megan and Jacob Richardson, Ashley Parks, Cole Richardson, and Kristin and Melissa Black.

Memorials may be sent to the Cheney American Legion Post 295.

Leslie Greenwood

Leslie J. “Les” Greenwood of Wichita, 88, retired United States Air Force pilot, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011. Visitation with the family was 6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Downing & Lahey Mortuary West. Service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, at Ascension Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Gustav Greenwood and Alice Ethel Schofield; brother, Jack; sisters, Eileen (infant) and Evelyn. Survivors include his wife, Eleanore; children, Connie Simmons of Austin, Texas, Donna Ward (Jay) of Wichita, Janice Whitman (Ralph) of Lake Stevens, Wash., David Greenwood (Margaret) of Monte Sereno, Calif., Nancy Farinola (Anthony) of Wichita, Barbara Snyder (Brian) of Woodinville, Wash., Diane Volm (William) of Antigo, Wisc., Douglas Greenwood (Leslie) of Goddard, and Kenneth Greenwood (Tisha) of West Chester, Ohio; 26 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with Ascension Lutheran Church, 842 N. Tyler, Wichita, KS 67212. Tributes may be sent to the family via www.dlwichita.com .

Loretta Leis

Loretta Leis, 88, passed away on December 27, 2011.

Loretta was born on July 14, 1923 in Garden Plain. She is preceded in death by her husband Leonard Leis. She is survived by her son, Randall (Joyce) Leis of Garden Plain; daughters, Sharon (Richard) Stump of Wichita, Donna (George) Osner of Conway Springs, Nancy (Tom) Fisher of Garden Plain; sister, Inez Roberts of Wichita; 25 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, one great-great-grandson.

The rosary was held Friday, Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Garden Plain and the funeral Mass was held Saturday, Dec. 31 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Garden Plain. The interment was held at St. Mary’s cemetery in Aleppo.

Arrangements were made by Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain.

Marguerite Desmarteau

Marguerite L. (Holmes) Desmarteau of Haysville, age 81, retired USD 261 teacher, passed away, Monday, Dec. 26, 2011. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, with funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Dec. 30, both at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Haysville.

Marguerite is survived by daughters Louise and Julia Desmarteau, Brenda Redford, like a daughter, and her beloved “Shautzie.” She was preceded in death by her parents, Ora and Edith Holmes, half-brother Edgar Hamilton Woolley, brother, Ora Edward Homes, Jr., sisters Annys Conley and Sarah Belle Simoneau, and husband Melvin.

Marguerite lived life with the grace and dignity we would all be proud to aspire to. She will be missed, but she will live on in our hearts forever. A memorial has been established for the St. Cecilia Catholic Church (Parking Lot Fund) at 1802 W. Grand Ave, Haysville, KS 67060. www.wsmortuary.com.

Dwight Pepperd

Dwight “Pep” Pepperd, 81, of Coldwater, and former Goddard resident, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011.

A celebration of life service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, at Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home in Coldwater, followed by a graveside serve at 11:15 a.m. at Crown Hill cemetery in Coldwater. Visitation will be 1-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at the funeral home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Maxine Heape; daughter, Jenny Polan; and parents, Merrill and Zora (White) Pepperd. He is survived by his current wife, Ruby Pepperd of Coldwater; six sons, Larry Pepperd of Hutchinson, Paul Pepperd of Kingman, Arlen pepperd of Wichita, Scott More of Kingman, Kent Moore of Cunningham, and Kris Moore of Coldwater; one daughter, Michelle Moore of Macksville, Kan.; one brother, Gary Pepperd of Canton, Kan.; two sisters, Margaret Greene of Tucson, Ariz., and Myrna Bumgarner of Coldwater; 16 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorials can be made to the Coldwater Volunteer Fire Department and South Wind Hospice in care of the funeral home.

Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home of Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.

Velma Aldridge

Velma H. (Loger) Aldridge, 86, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2011. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Central Community Church. Interment was in Clearwater Cemetery, Clearwater. Memorials may be made to Central Community Church, Motivator’s Class, 6100 W. Maple, Wichita, KS 67209.

Velma was born May 4, 1925, on a farm in Clearwater, Kan. She was one of three children born to her parents, Henry William Loger and Fern Caroline Maechtlen Loger. She received her education from Clearwater schools, graduating from Clearwater High School. She continued her education for two years at Wesley School of Nursing.

On April 3, 1945, she was united in marriage to Charles William Aldridge, Jr,, in the chapel of Wesley Hospital in Wichita. They moved to Rantoul, Ill., for five months until Charles’s discharge from the Air Force. They moved back to Wichita and resided there the remainder of their lives together. Charles preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 2009.

While in Rantoul, she worked as a secretary for the Chanute Air Force Base. From 1946 to 1949, she was a secretary for the IRS. She was a secretary for South High School in Wichita from 1959 to 1977, before transferring to administration of USD 259, where she remained until retirement in 1989.

Velma was a member of Central Community Church in Wichita. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star, Ninnescah Chapter 423, of Clearwater. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, tole painting, and traveling when still able.

She was preceded by husband, Charles Aldridge, Jr.; daughter, Deborah Thole; parents, Henry and Fern Loger; and brother, Dale Loger. Survivors include her children, Kenton (Beverly) Aldridge of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lynda (Gary) Mast of Derby; twin sister, Vera Kincheloe; son-in-law, Steve Thole; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

John Friend

John Robert Friend, formerly of Clearwater, passed away Saturday Jan. 21, 2012. John was born Aug. 17, 1960, to Robert and Gail Friend. John is survived by his best friend and partner Sue Tedesco; Flynn, her son, of Charleston, S.C.; parents, Robert and Gail Friend of Colorado Springs; and siblings, Larry (Sue), Barb (Jeff), Kevin (Mary), Mark, Gerald (Kelly), Ed (Jenn), and Terri (Rick). John was a beloved brother and a treasured uncle to many nephews and nieces.

John was an avid sportsman. In high school John’s love for sports was apparent in his dedication to and love for wrestling. Later, he took that passion and focused it on his involvement in wheelchair basketball as a player, and later as a coach. Most recently John was a founding member of Team Excel, a deep sea fishing team, and won the South Carolina Saltwater Sportfishing Association’s 2011 Outstanding Angler of the Year. John also deeply enjoyed participating in team billiards, and archery.

John was a charismatic and active member of the community most notably dedicated to teaching those with disabilities how to have full and active lives and spent much of his personal time installing accessibility equipment for those less fortunate than he. Throughout his life John worked in collaboration with hospitals to develop programs for persons with physical disabilities, encouraging participation in snow skiing, water skiing, archery, basketball, and fishing.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking that contributions go to support either Achieving Wheelchair Equality, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, founded to educate the public about the potential of wheelchair users and other persons with mobility impairments, 8163 Greenridge Rd., North Charleston, SC, 29406 or the Roper St. Francis Foundation c/o the Center for Spinal Cord Injury, 316 Calhoun St., Charleston, SC 29401.
