Ruth Lorenz

Ruth Lorenz, 98, died Friday, April 13 in Cheney. Funeral service will be held Thursday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cheney with interment following at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Ruth was born November 14, 1913, to Otto and Amanda (Jahn) Wulf in Cheney. Survivors include sister Margaret Mackey of Cheney, children Daryl and Marlene Lorenz of Cheney, David and Joan Lorenz of Jacksonville, Florida, Barbara and John Geuy of Buhler, nine grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Amanda Wulf, brother John and husband Elmer.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cheney; the KS District Lutheran Women’s Missionary League or the Golden Age Home.

Ruth joyfully shared her Christian faith and memories of her will be cherished.

Ennis Woods

Ennis “Tiny” Woods, age 86, of Clearwater, retired after 31 years at Vulcan as Production Foreman, lifelong Roper and Horseman, World War II Army veteran, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, April 12, with family present, 5-6:30 p.m., at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Friday, April 13, at First Baptist Church in Haysville.

He was preceded by his parents, Ennis and Willie Mae (Buchannan) Woods; sisters, Clarice Rich and Winifred Hunter; and brother, John Woods. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Wilma; sons, Jerrel (Andrea) Woods of Mulvane, and Keith Woods of Haysville; brother, Jerrel (Jeanine) Woods of Welling, Okla.; grandchildren, Ty, Lee, and Ryan Woods, Kilee Sanders and Britt Lange; and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 126 S. Delos, Haysville, KS 67060 or Home Health of Kansas, 7607 E. Harry, Wichita, KS 67207.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, was in charge of arrangements.

Ryan Brungardt

Ryan William Brungardt, 30, flight instructor at McAir Aviation, lost his life in a mid-air collision on Friday, March 23. Memorial service was on Saturday, March 31 at Parker Funeral Home in Parker, Colo. A memorial service for the Wichita area is still pending.

He is survived by his wife, Christina Andrews-Brungardt, mother and step-father Terri and Sandy Rogers of Newton, father and step-mother Terry and Kandi Brungardt of Parker, Colo., brother, Travis Brungardt of Parker, Colo., and sister Dusti Rogers of Hutchinson. Ryan also has many extended family members mourning his loss. A memorial has been set up at Legacy Bank, 3711 N. Ridge Rd, Wichita, KS 67205 “Remembering Ryan” because he had no life insurance.

There will be a memorial service in Hutchinson for Ryan Brungardt at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at the Kansas Cosmospher, 1100 N. Plum Street. There will be a lunch following the service at 4906 N. Hesston Road in Newton.

Gale Dixon

Gale A. Dixon, age 89, of Clearwater, passed away Sunday, April 1, 2012.

Gale was born Nov. 1, 1922 in Milan, Kan. He was the last of three children born to his parents William and Mary Alice (Pearce) Dixon. Gale retired from Boeing as a tool design engineer. He served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He was stationed in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe, where he was awarded four bronze stars among other recognitions. He then enlisted in the United States Naval Reserve serving in Korea for four years.

On Oct. 31, 1953, Gale was united in marriage to Mary Maxine Smith in Wichita.

He was a member of Clearwater United Methodist Church.

Gale was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Alice (Pearce) Dixon; wife, Maxine; brother, Albert Dixon; and sister, Ruth Merritt. He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Emberson of Clearwater, Joy Day of New Manchester, W.V., and Karen Loftus of Corona, Calif; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be held, at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 7, at Clearwater United Methodist Church. Memorials have been established with Clearwater United Methodist Church, 130 N. First, Clearwater, KS 67026 and with the Clearwater Lions Club, P.O. Box 381, Clearwater, KS 67026.

Barbara Hunt

Barbara Hunt, 54, of Garden Plain, died Monday, April 2, 2012. She was a school teacher and athletic director for Garden Plain Elementary School.

She is survived by husband, James Hunt; sons, Jimmy, John, and Jerrod; parents, Kenneth and Ermyl Reeder; sister, Laura and Richard Anderson.

Services are Thursday, April 5, at 10 a.m. at Garden Plain Elementary School Gym in Garden Plain. Pastor Doug Hasty will officiate.

Wulf-Ast Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred Yoder

Mildred Fay Van Dolah Yoder, 104, formerly of Cheney, passed away March 27, 2012 at Meadowood Retirement Community in Bloomington, Ind. She was born Nov. 24, 1907, at Belmont, Kan., daughter of Richard Clinton Van Dolah and Clara Ella Austin. She was married to Elwood C. Yoder June 9, 1929 at Cheney. She will be missed after a long life by her sons and their families, Neil Richard Yoder and his wife Elizabeth of Bloomington, Ind., and William Van Yoder and his wife Anita of Loomis, Calif.; and four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Millie is remembered as a teacher of piano and organ and choir director at Trinity United Christian Church in Cheney. She grew up in Cheney and as an adult, she worked more than 60 years helping in that community not only through her music but as a friend and mentor to young people in various stages of their lives. Service to others included the Cheney Emergency Fund, the Golden Age Home Auxiliary, the Cheney Bloodmobile, and Wesley Hospital in Wichita where she volunteered one day each week. She established a scholarship at Cheney High for students going to college. She was a Life Member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a Life Member of the Wichita Area Piano Teachers League.

After her retirement to Bloomington in 1994, she became active in the Meadowood Singers and attended many musical programs at Indiana University. Millie was a member of The Friday Morning Musicale, and established a scholarship for organ students at Indiana University. She researched her family history and joined the Lydia Prescott Chapter, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century and Bloomington Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. During her illness, she was supported by Dolores Spriggs, a friend in her final years, and she will be remembered for her positive spirit and love of music by her family, friends, her helper Diana Scroggins and the staff at Meadowood Comprehensive Care Unit.

Memorial services will be held in Bloomington and at Trinity United Church of Christ in Cheney. Interment will be at the Pioneer cemetery in Cheney. Contributions in memory of Mildred Yoder may be given to the Trinity UCC at 416 Washington Street, Cheney, KS 67025; or to the Indiana University Foundation, with Mildred Yoder Organ Scholarship written in the memo line, and mailed to the Jacobs School of Music Office of Development, 1201 E. Third Street, Bloomington, IN 47405.

A memorial service will be at Trinity United Church of Christ, Cheney, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 20. Yoder, 104, formerly of Cheney, died March 27, 2012.

Betty Buerki

Betty M. Buerki, 88, retired editor for the United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, Tenn., died Monday, March 26, 2012. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 29, at Downing & Lahey Mortuary West in Wichita.

Survivors include her brother, Lynn Buerki (Shirley) of Goddard; nieces and nephews, Dan Buerki (Janice) of Wichita, Pam Buerki Rogers (Rick) of Hutchinson, Tish Buerki Dimick (Ken) of Goddard, Ken Roth of Van Nuys, Calif., Linda Roth Claasen (Glen) of Waxhaw, N.C., and Susan Roth Ritta (Bob) of Central City, Neb.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial has been established with West End United Methodist Church, 2200 West End Ave., Nashville, TN 67203. Tributes may be sent to the family via www.dlwichita.com.

Wilma Funke

Wilma C. Funke, 78, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away March 26, 2012.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; sister, Alice Brown; and her parents, Eulis and Sophie (Kramer) Brown.

She is survived by her sons, Gary Funke, Warren Funke, and Ed (Jennifer) Funke; daughters, Carol Funke, Debbie (Kenny) Helten and Judy (Mike) Leis; grandchildren, Stacy and Justin Koester, Jenni and Zane Ehling, Sarah and Phil Benn, Natalie Leis, Mandy and Omar Williams, Michael and Jessica Funke, Megan and Zak Blakely, Alyssa and Michael Wilson, Laura and Alan Youngers, and Lindsey Funke; and eight great-grandchildren.

Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29, and funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 30, both at St. Anthony Church in Garden Plain. Interment will be at St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Garden Plain.

Memorials may be made to the Friends of Father Philip Allen Seminary Burse Care of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita.

John Hill

John Hill, 92, died March 12 at his home in Norwich. He was born August 8, 1919 in Martinsville, Ind., to George and Lillian Hill. He was an army veteran and a retired carpenter. He married Clara Maxine Vernon.

He was preceded in death by all four of his siblings, his daughter Terry Hill, granddaughter April Gray and grandson Anthony Gray.

He is survived by his wife, C. Maxine Hill and children, Joe, Beth, Lois, Ruth, Patty, Doris, Elosie, Evelyn and John Jr., 19 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 31 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Lanterman Funeral Home in Cheney was in charge of services.

Dale Hosey

Dale Hosey, 86, passed away on Friday, March 23 at his home in Goddard. He was a retired agent telegrapher in Goddard, Garden Plain, and Cheney. Dale was born November 2, 1925 in Rago, the son of James and Elizabeth (Sparks) Hosey. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. On August 28, 1949 he married Virginia Black.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hosey of Goddard; sons, Alan (Cindy) Hosey of Goddard and Lon Hosey of Viola; daughters, Connie (Marc) Payne of Wichita and Gina (David) Owings of Viola; brother, Harold and Chris Hosey of Emporia; sisters, Francine Hargadine of South Hutchinson and Margaret (Morris) Bell of Mill Creek, Virginia; grandchildren, Lisa Hosey, Lon Hosey, Jr., Andrea Hosey, Cara Jarry, Katie Kaufman, Matthew Hosey, Cameron Owings, Jared Richards and Tanner Owings and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents James and Elizabeth Hosey; brothers, Ted Hosey and Donald Hosey; sister, Marilyn Warren and great-granddaughter Chelsie Webb.

The service was held on Tuesday, March 27 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Christian Church in Cheney. Interment was held at Pioneer cemetery in Cheney. Memorial funds can be made out to American Diabetes Association or First Baptist Church in Goddard. Arrangements were made by Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain.

Katharyn Kipp

Katharyn June Kipp of Cheney, 82, died on March 23, 2012.

Funeral service was Wednesday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity United Christian Church in Cheney. She was born on May 17, 1929 in Noble County, Ind., to George W. and Orpha Anna (Moore) Bower.

Survivors include her son, Jerry (Jackie) Gordon of Albion, Ind.; daughters, Lauise (Gilbert) Hoaglan of Wichita and June (Rodney) Gregory of Milton; grandchildren, Chance (Ginny) Gregory, Hope Gregory and Lora (Jay) Alloway, all of Cheney; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren

On Dec. 28, 1973 she married Rev. Adrian D. Kipp, who died in 1997. Also preceding her in death were her parents and six siblings.

Memorials are to the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice and the Trinity United Christian Church.

Julie Mies

Julie Marie Mies, 53, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and daughter passed away Saturday, March 17 after a courageous battle with cancer. Julie was born Sept. 15 1958 in Wichita, the daughter of Donald and JoAnn Martin Leis. She married Gary Mies on Nov. 6, 1976 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Aleppo, and together the proudly ran hole-in-one Holsteins for over 30 years.

She is survived by her husband Gary Mies; sons, Jarrud (Jessica), Brandon (Holly), Philip, and Kelly (Kristi); parents Don and JoAnn Leis; brothers, Max Leis, and Mike (Judy) Leis; sisters, Virginia (Don) Thimmesch and Jolene (Mike) Milford; grandchildren, Thomas, Laney, Ava, Maci, and Logan.

She is preceded in death by a son, Alex.

The Rosary was held March 19 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Garden Plain. Mass was held Tuesday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Garden Plain. Interment was held at St. Anthony cemetery in Garden Plain. Memorials can be made out to St. Anthony Pro-Life Outreach.

Virgil Pauly

Virgil C. Pauly, 90, dairyman and farmer, of Clonmel, passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012. A Rosary was held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Clonmel. Interment will be in St. John’s Catholic cemetery in Clonmel.

Virgil was born on Christmas Day in 1921 in a farmhouse southwest of Clonmel, in rural Viola, Kan. He was fourth of eight children born to his parents, Benedict “Ben” Pauly and Anna (Nilles) Pauly.

Virgil was united in marriage on October 27, 1948, to Cyrilla A. Friess at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Garden Plain, Kan. They made their home in the farmhouse where he was born.

He spent his lifetime as a dairyman and farmer. Even after moving into the retirement home in 1984, he still did field work for his farming sons for several years.

Virgil was a lifetime member of St. John’s Catholic Church. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed bowling, traveling, woodworking and in his later years, gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Anna (Nilles) Pauly; his wife of more than 60 years, Cyrilla; siblings, Gregory, Ralph, Marvin, Marjorie and Mary Pauly, Mildred Werner, and Martha Reno; grandson, Jason Pauly; and great-grandson, Christian Stewart. Survivors include his children, Janice (Alan) Weiss, Nancy Pauly Thompson, Steven (Nancy) Pauly, Kevin (Susanne) Pauly, and Brian (Debbie) Pauly, all of Viola, and Daniel (Sheree) Pauly of Colorado Springs; grandchildren, Heather Stewart, Jeremy Thompson, Lindsay Thompson, Michelle Morrell, Blake Pauly, Ashley Zoglmann, Kendra Peak, Emily Kohler, Andrea Pauly, Katlyn Pauly, Trent Pauly, Tyler Pauly, Lauren Nelson, Michael Pauly, Megan Pauly and Jordan Pauly; and 11 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church, 18630 W. 71st S., Viola, KS 67149.
