Elliott
Alan Leroy Elliott, 23, Holton, died Sept. 21, 2003, as a result of a single-vehicle accident east of Whiting. He was born July 3, 1980, at Atchison, the son of Roy and Phyllis Watkins Elliott. He was a 1999 graduate of Atchison County Community High School and attended Northeast Kansas Area Vocational Technical School in Atchison. Mr. Elliott was a lifelong Holton area resident. He had worked at Armstrong Tire in Muscotah and later for Oldham's Farm Sausage in Holton. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Phyllis and John Webster, Holton; his father, Roy Elliott, Horton, a brother, Michael Elliott, Holton; a sister, Pam Elliott, Holton; maternal grandparents, Phillip and Ruth Watkins, Holton; maternal grandmother, Mae Stanbarger, Holton; and a nephew, Phillip Elliott, Holton. Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Muscotah Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alan Elliott Memorial Fund and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, 1101 W. Fourth St., Holton, KS 66436.

Zibell
Zedith Zerelda Zibell, 96, San Diego, Calif., died Sept. 21, 2003, at a nursing center in San Diego. She was born Nov. 14, 1906, at Holton, the daughter of Albert and Winnie Reamer Boettcher. Mrs. Zibell had been a resident of San Diego since 1972, moving there from Topeka to be near her family. She was a former member of the Topeka Bible Church. She married Percy Zibell on Dec. 17, 1941, at Holton. He died Dec. 19, 1985. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Hallie Boettcher and four sisters, Elsie Walton, Gladys Thomas, Dorothy Cooney and Marguerite Kabance. Survivors include a daughter, Carol Cannon, San Diego, Calif.; and a granddaughter. Graveside services were held Sept. 27 in Holton Cemetery.

Woltje
Wanda May Woltje, 72, Meriden, died Sept. 19, 2003, at a Topeka hospital. She was born March 5, 1931, in Gilman City, Mo. Mrs. Woltje was the retired owner and operator of a café in Havensville, retiring in 1983. She and her husband had previously lived in Jamesport, Mo., and in Onaga. She was a member of Jamesport Baptist Church. She married Lemuel A. Woltje on Feb. 10, 1951, in Plains. He died May 16, 1999. She also was preceded in death by a grandson, Robbie Woltje, in November 1974. Survivors include four sons, Ivan M. Woltje, Herington, Charles D. Woltje, Ozawkie, Ernest L. Woltje, Circleville, and Lanny D. Woltje, Holton; two daughters, Pauletta Persell, Herington, and Sandra McAlexander, Meriden; three brothers, Eldon Cox, Trenton, Mo., Dallas Cox, Jamesport, Mo., and Ivan Cox, Plains; two sisters, Lawan Whitman, Belle Garden, Calif., and Elsie Allison, Phoenix, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sept. 23 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Inurnment was in Soldier Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Jamesport Baptist Church and sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, 1101 W. Fourth St., Holton, KS 66436.

Kerns
David S. Kerns, 72, Hiawatha, died Dec. 1, 2003, at a Hiawatha hospital. He was born March 18, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Frank and Grace Thorne Kerns. He was a graduate of Baldwin High School and also graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor's degree in animal science. He later graduated from Purdue University with a master's degree in animal husbandry. Mr. Kerns served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He later worked at various jobs including teaching at Purdue and as an extension agent, a banker and a bookkeeper. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hiawatha. He also was a member of Masonic Lodge AF&AM 13 of Hiawatha, Hiawatha American Legion, Boy Scouts (Silver Beaver) since 1972, Audobon Society, Monarch Watch, Nature Conservancy, National Rifle Association, Hunter Education Instructor, Friends of Boundary Waters Wilderness, National Wild Turkey Federation, National Wildlife Federation, Zenith Chapter 184 Order of Eastern Star of Hiawatha and the Kansas State University Alumni Association. He married Betty Massengill on Aug. 16, 1959, in Otterbein, Ind. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, David S. Kerns Jr. and wife Carol, Wathena, and Brian Kerns and wife Janet, Hiawatha; a daughter, Susan Foster and husband Scott, Holton; and seven grandchildren. Mr. Kerns was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Willard Kerns; and an infant daughter, Janet Marie Kerns. Funeral services were held Dec. 4 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, with Pastor Frank Pritz officiating. Interment followed in Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha. Memorial contributions are suggested in his name and sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S. Seventh St., Hiawatha, KS 66434.

Rotz
Fern Rotz, 93, Hiawatha, died Nov. 30, 2003, at a Hiawatha nursing home where she had been a resident for six years. She was born Nov. 1, 1910, in Mercer County, Mo., the daughter of Elmer and Nellie Miller McQuerry. She came with her family at an early age to Kansas, settling near Hamlin where she grew up and attended school. Mrs. Rotz worked for several years in the lunchroom at Powhattan School. She and her husband also farmed and raised livestock south of Hiawatha for many years before they retired and moved to the city. She was a member of Powhattan United Methodist Church and the UMW at the church. She later was a member of First Baptist Church of Hiawatha and the ABW at the church. She also was a member of Zenith Chapter 184, Order of Eastern Star of Hiawatha, and the KK Community Club of Hiawatha. She married Ralph Rotz on May 17, 1927, at Hiawatha. He died Feb. 5, 1994. She also was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and two sisters. Survivors include a son, Charles Rotz, Independence, Mo.; three daughters, Beverly McKee, Hoyt, Joy Bauman, Chapman, and Kay Wilkes, Groveland, Fla.; two brothers, Don McQuerry, Hemet, Calif., and Leonard McQuerry, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Dec. 2 in Hiawatha Cemetery, with Vern Finley, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hiawatha, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Maple Heights Nursing Home, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 124 S. Seventh St., Hiawatha, KS 66434.

Sewell
Bernice L. Sewell, 91, Goff, died Nov. 30, 2003, at Jackson County Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since May. She was born Nov. 30, 1912, in rural Goff, the daughter of Samuel and Lura Wathen Munsel. She attended Evening Star School at Goff and lived most of her life in Goff. Mrs. Sewell worked as a doctor's receptionist, as a waitress and also at the poultry plant in Goff. She was a member of Horton United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a past member of Goff United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She married Emil Thieme on Dec. 21, 1930. He died May 10, 1963. She married Brutus Sewell in August 1964. He died in March 1993. She also was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Bernard, Harold, Harvey and Sam Jr.; and four sisters, Grace, Muriel, Sarah and Wilma. Survivors include two sisters, Edith Mae Doubleday, Shawnee Mission, and Evelyn Lischka, Hartford, Wisc.; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Roger Gill and Hazel and Gerald Smith, all of Wetmore. Funeral services were held Dec. 3 at Goff United Methodist Church, with Pastor Chris Dodson officiating. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery near Goff. Memorial contributions are suggested in her name and may be sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 1720 First Ave. East, Horton, KS 66439.

Williams
Robert S. Williams, 92, Prairie Village, died Nov. 30, 2003, at a Roeland Park care center. He was born March 8, 1911, at Holton, the son of Edwin J. and Ruth Hayden Williams. He graduated from Holton High School in 1929. Mr. Williams was employed by Quaker State Oil Company and later opened Bob Williams Auto Parts Company in Waldo, which he operated for 34 years, retiring in 1998. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a warrant officer during World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Gratia W. Nakahashi (also known as Sandy Williams) and husband Kenji, New York City. Mr. Williams was cremated. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date at Holton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Hospital Foundation, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, 1101 W. Fourth St., Holton, KS 66436.

Fink
Ella L. Fink, 74, Holton, died Nov. 30, 2003, at the Jackson County Nursing Home in Holton. She was born Jan. 3, 1929, near Alma, the daughter of Herman E. and Anna M. Pageler Hasenbank. Mrs. Fink worked as a cook at the Landon State Office Building in Topeka and the Jackson County Senior Citizens Center in Holton. She also worked for Craig's IGA in Holton. She married Karl L. Fink on Nov. 17, 1944, at Westmoreland. He died July 22, 1997. Survivors include a son, Steven J. Fink, Holton; four daughters, Sylvia J. Spangler, Topeka, Sonya J. Bergman and Shelia J. Murray, both of Mayetta, and Schrita J. Fink, Hoyt; three sisters, Thelma M. Dinger and Edna E. Dinger, both of Galena, Mo., and Lorene L. Strimple, Eudora; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Dec. 2 at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in South Denison Cemetery.

Durham
Charles Marion Durham, 73, Topeka, died Nov. 28, 2003, in Topeka. He was born Dec. 29, 1929, in Delia, the son of Irda Oswald "Pete" Durham and Elsie Mae Malloy. He was a 1947 graduate of Holton High School. Mr. Durham served 10 years in the U.S. Army, in Germany two times and also during the Korean War. He served in the 101st Airborne Special Forces. He was a member of Moose Lodge 555, Legion of the Moose and American Legion Post 400. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Durham, Topeka; two sons, Charles W. Durham, Minneapolis, Minn., and Jim Delsing, Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Debra Pratt and Cheryl Durham, Minneapolis, Minn.; a brother, Eugene Durham; three sisters, Ramona Hamlin, Leona Sisson and Peggy Spalding; and 11 grandchildren, Shawn Durham, Donovan Pratt, Christina Durham, Erik Durham, Andrea Pratt, Troy Gallery, Angela Cooper, Erika Durham, Loni Turner, Katrina Turner, and preceded in death by Gordon James Pratt III. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 5 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Moose Association. Newcomer Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, but is not involved in the service.

Keithline
Kenneth Lee Keithline, 94, Netawaka, died Nov. 28, 2003, at a Holton care facility. He was born May 8, 1909 in Netawaka, the son of Herschel B. and Amelia Nelson Keithline. He graduated from Netawaka High School in 1927 and lived all his life in the Netawaka community. Mr. Keithline worked for Goodyear in Topeka until his retirement. He was a member of the Netawaka United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge in Netawaka and Whiting. He married Ingrid K. Hand on Sept. 17, 1940, in Salina. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Herschel Keithline, Netawaka; three daughters, Billie Winsor, Holton, Colleen Reamer, Delia and Carole Koci, Topeka; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A daughter, Kathryn Lynne Keithline, preceded him in death. Services were held Dec. 1 at Netawaka United Methodist Church. Burial was in Netawaka Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Netawaka United Methodist Church, sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, 1101 W. Fourth St., Holton, KS 66436.

Shinkle
Grace Shinkle, infant daughter of Michael and Kimberly Kent Shinkle, Hoyt, died shortly after birth on Nov. 28, 2003, at a Topeka hospital. In addition to her parents, survivors include five sisters, Jana Sawyer, Kansas City, Mo., and Hannah, Leah, Rachel and Abigail Shinkle, all of the home; three brothers, Luke, Mark and Caleb Shinkle, all of the home; maternal grandparents, James and Barbara Kent, Hoyt; and paternal grandparents, Jack Shinkle, Las Vegas, Nev., and Joy Corine Shinkle, Topeka. Graveside services were held Dec. 1 at Hoyt Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Grace Shinkle Memorial Fund, sent in care of Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, Hoyt.

Jones
Harvey R. Jones Sr., 84, Topeka, died Nov. 25, 2003, at his home. He was born Oct. 26, 1919, in Cushing, Okla., the son of H.W. and Della Chanwell Jones. Mr. Jones was a foreman at the General Mills Elevator from 1952 until he retired in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army from October 1942 to November 1945 with the 134 1st Engineers in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He married Nadine Ann Reser on Aug. 15, 1980, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include three sons, Harvey R. Jones Jr., Dwayne McMillan and Douglas McMillan, all of Topeka; seven daughters, Joyce Rich, Auburn, Wanda Whitfield, Altha, Fla., Donna Beam, Hoyt, Ann Hamlin, Topeka, Pam Dease, Marianna, Fla., Marcia Johnston, Mayetta, and Saundra McMillan, Mattoon, Ill.; 20 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Nov. 29 at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel. Burial was in Zion Cemetery in Tecumseh. Memorial contributions may be made to the Terry C. Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research, 1 Chalmers Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506-3901.

Senner
Harold E. Senner, 88, Topeka, died Nov. 25, 2003, at a Topeka hospice house. He was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Topeka. He was reared in the Netawaka area and graduated from Netawaka High School. Mr. Senner spent a year in the Civilian Conservation Corps in South Dakota, and he and his wife later farmed a number of years in Cloud County. They later lived in Jamestown before moving in 1952 to Topeka, where he worked for Ed Marling Home Furnishings for several years and later for Acme Radio Supply, where he worked until his retirement. He married Sarah M. Meadows on Oct. 10, 1940, in Concordia. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Sarah Jane Wise, St. Joseph, Mo., and Mary Ann Schneider, San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Nov. 29 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Burial was in Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice House, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606, or to the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 S.W. 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604.
