Eli Hilderbrand

Eli Hilderbrand, age 18, of Purcell, and currently of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007, in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at the Goldsby Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Greening officiating. Interment will follow in the Washington Cemetery in Washington, Okla. Born April 14, 1989, in Phoenix, Ariz., he was the son of John David Hilderbrand and Shawna Renee Hilderbrand. Eli graduated from Purcell High School in May of 2007. He was presently enrolled at Cowley College in Arkansas City where he was studying to be a massage therapist. Eli was co-founder of the Multicultural Student Union and he played intramural sports. He was employed at the Student Wellness Center. Survivors include his father, John David Hilderbrand, of Avondale, Ariz.; brother, Ty Hilderbrand, of Arkansas City; two older sisters, Holly Wills, of Winfield, and Elizabeth Hyde, of Purcell, Okla.; younger sister, Cheyenne Russell, of Palmer, Alaska; grandparents, Doyle Williams, of Purcell, Chip and Joy Sarchett of Phoenix. He was preceded in death by his mother; and grandparents, Mildred B. Williams and Don Hilderbrand.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson-Little Funeral Home, Purcell.

Gary Lynn "Buffy" Artherton

Funeral services for Gary Lynn "Buffy" Artherton, 71, Arkansas City, who died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007, were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Robert L. Ferris, First Christian Church in Newkirk, officiated. Military honors were by Spencer Ralston Post No. 1254 VFW, Arkansas City. Honorary casket bearers were his family, co-workers and friends.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Jimmie Lee Pingry

Graveside services for Jimmie Lee Pingry, 46, Ashton, who died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, in the Parker Cemetery. Pastor Gale Rider, Mt. Zion Community Church, officiated. Special music was by Tommy James. Casket bearers were Curtis Betzen, Bill Stroud, Adam Ast, Justin Bland, Marc Wynn and Ed Raub. Honorary casket bearers were Kenny Bracken, Darryl Carner, Larry Wilcox, Zeke Wilson, Tim Morrison, Greg Thomas, Gary Wilson, Zack Wilson and Brad Scott.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Anita Louise Esquivel

Mass of Christian Burial for Anita Louise Esquivel, 56, Arkansas City, who died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Charles Seiwert officiated. Interment was in the Riverview Cemetery. Cantor was Marcia Stultz. Organist was Karen Pontious. Altar servers were Devin Zavala, Luke Kuffler, and Lindsay Hull. Casket bearers were Primo Venegas Jr., Gilbert Ramirez, Michael Mora, Alfred Savala Jr., Reuben Garcia and Alex Garcia.
Arrangements were under the diretion of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Elmo L. Meek

Elmo L. Meek, 93, retired owner of Murdock Machine & Engineering Co., died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at Downing & Lahey East. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, in Riverview Cemetery, Arkansas City. Survivors include his son, Mark Alan Meek, Tampa, Fla.; daughters, Mary Margaret Magathan, Cedar Point, Kan., Marcia Lee Dew, Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; sisters, Patricia Winfrey and Mary Ellen Meek; and brothers, Bill and Newell Meek.
Memorials have been established to Margaret Craig Meek Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, c/o WSU Endowment Association, 1845 Fairmount, Wichita, KS 67208. Arrangemetns are under the direction of the Downing & Lahey Mortuary, Wichita.

Charlie Christie, 57, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007.
Arrangements are pending and under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Betty Marie (Wright) Smith

Betty Marie (Wright) Smith, 87, of Arkansas City, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Betty was born June 17, 1920, in Arkansas City, to Floyd E. and Lillian (Morgan) Wright. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1938. She later graduated from Kansas University with a degree in education. Betty taught school for six months right out of college. Later, she taught at Chilloco Indian School for a year. On Aug. 8, 1943, she married Ralph D. Smith in Arkansas City. The couple made their home in Arkansas City most of their married lives. During WWII Betty worked as a Red Cross social worker in the Houston area and as an inspector at Boeing. In Arkansas City, Ralph owned and operated Day's Monument Company while Betty stayed home to raise their two children. Betty was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and various circles. She served many years as a Sunday School leader. She was also a member of P.E.O. BO Chapter, Arkansas City Music and Drama Club, Winnebago and Itasca Box Turtles Travel Club, Spencer-Ralston Post 1254 Ladies Auxiliary, AAUW, Beta Sigma Phi, SCKRMC Auxiliary, and a local Home Extension Unit. She also volunteered as a Campfire leader. Survivors include a son, Steve and his wife, Marianne Smith, of Arkansas City; a daughter, Diana and her husband, Craig Brennecke, of Belton, Texas; two brothers, Morgan and his wife, Joan Wright, of Larned, Willard and his wife, Ann Wright of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Shelena and her husband, Jeff Hall, Rebekah Miller, Tina Brennecke; and one great-grandchild, Leah Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ralph in 2002.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church or the Presbyterian Manor Employee Appreciation Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Martin James Murelio

Mass of Christian Burial for Martin James Murelio, 43, Arkansas City, who died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007, was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Father Charles Seiwert officiated. Interment was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Winfield. Casket bearers were Michael Gonzales, James Gonzales, Jesse Acosta Jr., Danny Gonzales, Joshua Murelio and Tony Acosta. Honorary casket bearers were David Gonzales, Michael Mora, David Ramirez, Anthony Mora, Matthew Mora, Tom Ramirez and Christopher Mora.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

June Delores Doyal

June Delores Doyal, 78, of Vista, Calif., died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at the home of her daughter in Oceanside, Calif. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Generation Church in Oceanside, Calif. Pastor Ben Ferrell will officiate. A private family internment will take place at a later date. June was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Gadsden, Ala., the daughter of Joseph Draper and Lillian Myrtine (Braddy) Doyal. At a young age she moved with her parents and sister to Chattanooga, Tenn. She attended Chattanooga High School graduating in 1948. Following graduation, she worked for a year before enrolling at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., in the fall of 1949. During the years before her marriage she worked for a department store, a wholesale supply company and a law firm. On April 12, 1953, she married Ensign Clarence L. Priddy Jr. at the White Oak Baptist Church, in Chattanooga, Tenn., and as she said, "thus began her life of travel." She spent 21 years as a homemaker and Naval officer's wife. June also worked as a real estate agent in Virginia Beach, Va. She worked as the secretary for the product support division of Hewlett-Packard in San Diego from 1976 to 1993. In recent years, she was instrumental in establishing the Hewlett-Packard Retirees Club. She was a strong and fiercely loving woman who pursued a wide variety of interests and loved to travel. While married and raising a family, she lived in six different states as well as in Japan. In the fall of 1988, she took the trip of her dreams to Australia and New Zealand. She was a creative, talented seamstress and enjoyed making her own greeting cards. In her retirement years, she spent as much time as she could with her daughters and their fami- lies and continued to educate and improve herself. Although the last few years of her life were plagued by ill heath, she will be remembered for her uncommon courage and unfailing devotion to family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. June is survived by her three daughters, Melodie June Parman, and her husband, Jon, of Arkansas City, Kan., Jennelle Lynn Alcorn, and her husband, Michael, of Oceanside, Calif., and Dannene Celeste Kondor, and her husband, Dennis, of Escondido, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Meghann Parman, of Arkansas City, Kan., Emily Parman, of New York, N.Y., Stuart Parman, of Sterling, Kan., Sarah Pultz, of Oceanside, Calif., Joseph Alcorn, of San Diego, Calif., Rebecca Alcorn, of Oceanside, Calif., and Andrew Kondor, and his wife, Carrie, of Beaverton, Ore.; and one great-grandson, Lamont Pultz, of Oceanside, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Joyce Robertson and Norma Jean Doyal.
A memorial has been established with Hospice by the Sea. Contributions may be made in her name directly to Hospice by the Sea, 312 S. Cedros Ave., Ste. 250, Solana Beach, CA 92075.

Donald "Bud" Palmer

Donald "Bud" Palmer, 75, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center of Arkansas City.
Memorial services are pending and will be announced by Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.

Doris Leland

Doris Leland, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at her residence. Funeral services are pending and will be announced by the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.
Ella Beatrice "Bea" Marsh

Ella Beatrice "Bea" Marsh, 72, longtime Arkansas City resident, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, in Sherman, Texas. Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City. The Reverend Joyce Daniel and the Reverend Danny Daniel will officiate. Bea was born July 18, 1936, to Lee and Lugene (McElhiney) Owens. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Arkansas City High School in 1954. She married Rex E. Marsh on Aug. 19, 1956, in Arkansas City. Bea worked as the program manager for KSOK radio in 1955-56, for the "Northwest Arkansas Times" from 1956-58. Bea was the co-owner and of M&S Transport from 1978 until her retirement in 1999. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church, POE Chapter ER, Arkansas City Country Club and the chamber of commerce. Survivors include her husband, Rex, of the home; two sons, Eric Marsh, of Wichita, and Jay Marsh, of Gunter, Texas; one daughter, Hillary Marsh, of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Leigh Maynard, of Ohio, and Beulah Von Banks, Maui, Hawaii; a brother, Lael Dennis Owens, of Tulsa, Okla.; and three grandchildren, Megan Nicole Marsh, Tylee Marie Marsh and Dylan Michael Marsh. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial has been established with the First Presbyterian Church of Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Local Arrangements are being made through Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City. .

Leona Elizabeth Gurnee

Leona Elizabeth Gurnee, 79, of Winfield, Kan., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at Via Christi St.-Francis Hospital in Wichita. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday evening from 5 to 9. Born on Jan. 29, 1929, in Aurora, Mo, she was the daughter of John and Alpha (Garoutte) Sallee. Leona worked as a homemaker all her life. Leona is survived by her husband of 64 years, Victor "Vic" Gurnee, of the home; her sons, Dennis Gurnee, and wife Sandra, of Stockton, Mo., and David Gurnee, and wife Katie, of Makinaw Island, Mi; her daughter, Janis Kay Evans, and husband Walter, of Winfield; her brothers, E.D. Sallee, William T. Dale and Frank Eugene Dale; her sisters, Stella Dale Bugay and Rebecca May Dale; her nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by her infant son, Clifford Gurnee; her brothers, John Benjamin Sallee and Harry A. Dale; and her infant sister, Lillian Anita Dale.
A memorial has been established in Mrs. Gurnee's name for the Davita Dialysis Center in Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service in Winfield.

Gregory David Johnson

Gregory David Johnson, 51, died peacefully in his home in Norman Okla., on Dec. 29, 2007 after a lengthy illness. A memorial service/wake will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at the Marland Mansion, 901 Monument Road, Ponca City. As Greg requested, cremation has been effected. Greg was born Dec. 14, 1956, to Downing and Phyllis Johnson in Ponca City, Okla., where he attended local schools, graduating from Ponca City High School in 1975. Upon graduation, Greg moved to Phoenix, Ariz., to attend De Vry Institute. He later returned to Ponca City to join his father in the family business, Softwater Service, Inc. In 1980 he moved to Arkansas City, to manage the Softwater Service branch there. On Aug. 2, 1982, he married Debbie Tilton, at which time the couple purchased the business there. They had two children, Leslie Anne born Feb. 20, 1977, and Jordan David born Jan. 31, 1986. They later relocated their business to its present location renaming it Quality Water Services and built Quality Mini Storage. Both children actively worked in the family owned business as their father wished. The couple was later divorced. Greg was a successful businessman but always found time for his family and friends. Most memorable to his children are the trips to the ocean and the motorcycles and wheelers always present in their lives and the fun they all had riding together. Greg was also blessed with two grandchildren, Kylee and Konner Johnson. He had recently relocated to Norman, Okla., where his brother, Bruce Johnson, and cousin, Mike Johnson, live. Shortly before Greg died, he took his daughter, Leslie, and granddaughter, Kylee, on a wonderful vacation to Hawaii for their final vacation together. Survivors include daughter, Leslie Johnson, grandchildren, Kylee and Konner, all of Arkansas City; stepmother, Carole Johnson of Ponca City; three brothers, Bruce Johnson and wife, Donna, of Norman, Okla., Kelly Johnson and wife, Cheryl, of Ponca City, and Reid Johnson, of Ponca City; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, stepbrothers and sisters and many lifelong friends. Greg was preceded in death by his son, Jordan Johnson; his mother, Phyllis Johnson; father, Downing Johnson; maternal and paternal grandparents; his nephew, Cory Johnson; and cousin, Doug Westberg, as well as numerous aunts and uncles.
Arrangements are under the diretion of the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman, Okla.

Barbara Jean Jordan

Barbara Jean Jordan, 80, of Santee Calif., died at her home on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at Featheringill College Center Chapel in San Diego, Calif. Born June 19, 1927, in Pontiac, Mich., she was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Jim Jordan of the home, daughters, Chris and Curtis Littrell, of Arkansas City, Lisa and Mike Laterza, of San Diego, Calif., sons, Michael and Karen Jordan, of Murietta Calif., James Jordan, of Quail Valley, Calif., Tim and Doreen Jordan, of La Mesa, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Featheringill Mortuary, San Diego.

Leroy Dean Brinkley

Leroy Dean Brinkley, 78, Winfield, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at his home. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 5, 2008, at Miles Funeral Service, Winfield. Masonic rites will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Friday. The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Born Oct. 17, 1929, in Marion, Kan., he was the son of John Robert and May (Dapron) Brinkley. He worked at McConnell Air Force Base as a supervisor in the heating shop until retirement in 1993. Survivors include his son, John Brinkley, Winfield; daughters, Cledean Jones, Plano, Texas, and Michelle Leeper, Douglass; brother, Harry Cleon Brinkley, Waukegan, Ill.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cletus F. Brinkley; his parents; and brother, Robert Brinkley.
A memorial has been established for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
