Linus Thome

Linus P. Thome, age 85, of Clearwater, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012. A rosary will held Friday, May 25 at 7 p.m., and a funeral Mass will be Saturday, May 26 at 10:30 a.m., both at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church of Schulte, Kan.

Linus was born on August 27, 1926 in Schulte, Kan. He was the fifth of seven children born to his parents, Mike and Catherine (Friess) Thome. He met the love of his life, Mary Ann Clasen, at a Colwich wedding dance and they were married on January 16, 1951, at St. Joseph’s Church in Wichita. Though the years they were able to continue their love of dancing at many more weddings and square dancing events. They resided on a farmstead southeast of Schulte all of their married life, where Linus was a carpenter, dairy man and farmer. He and his brothers helped build many of the buildings on the parish grounds. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

Linus was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Almeda Faker, Leonita Doffing, Sylvester, Clarence and Fred Thome; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Gary Simon; and grandson, Eric Simon. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Ann; children, Gwen (Melvin) Ast of Wellington, Allen (Pat) Thome of Clearwater, Pam (Pat) Koester of Garden Plain, Vicky (Steve) Maechtlen of Pratt, Sandy (Ted) Simon of Andale, Mary Lynn (Tim) Grogan of Clearwater, Jessie (Steve) Goldsmith of Cheney, Ricky (Bonnie) Thome of Clearwater, Lynn (Rick) Wilken of Haysville, and Shelli (Doug) Ridder of Hutchinson; brother, Alvin Thome of Siloam Springs, Ark.; 42 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Claribel L. (Cranston) Rausch

Claribel L. (Cranston) Rausch, age 78, of Colwich, retired bank teller, died May 25, 2012. She was born on June 1, 1933, in Wichita to Paul and Gladys (Hollingsworth/Thoma) Cranston in Wichita. Claribel married Leroy Rausch September 10, 1956.

Claribel worked from the age of 14 at the family owned grocery store in Wichita as a cashier. She was later employed by Maize Food Center for 9 years. She retired from Legacy Bank in Colwich after 20 years of service.

Claribel was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother taking great pride in her family all the way down to the great-grandchildren. Her husband, Leroy, parents and grandson, Chad Rausch, preceded her in death. She is survived by sons, Michael (Linda) of Sulphur, La., and Gregory (Debbie) of Clearwater; daughter, Diana Headley of Wichita; grandchildren, Jerry Rausch (Jamie), Cody Rausch, Colton Rausch, Mitchell Paul Rausch (Lacey), Jana Claire Dixon (Chris), Bradley Ingram (Kym); great-grandchildren, Pierce Rausch, Loren Kate Dixon, Taylor Ingram, Jude Dixon, Logan Joseph Rausch.

Services will be held on Tuesday May 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colwich, officiated by Father Ken Schuckman. Memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society.

Harold Meller

Harold L. Meller, 78, of Wichita and Kaw City, Okla., former freight salesman, retired from United Warehouse, died Saturday, June 2, 2012.

Local service was at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel, Clearwater. Texas Service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 7, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Darrouzett, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Emilie (Miller) Meller; and sisters, Dorothy Meller and Dorothy Ann Phelps. Survivors include his wife, Pat; children, Harolyn (Mark) Cathey, B.J. (Kim) Meller, LeAnn Rosiere, all of Wichita; step-children, Terri (Marck) Powers of White Bluff, Texas, Ernest (Tamie) Boston of Borger, Texas, Bruce Boston of Kaw City, Steven Boston of Wolfforth, Texas, Teresa Phelps of Newkirk, Okla., Karen Burghardt of Ponca City, Okla., and Wanda (Scott) Griffin of Arcadia, Okla.; sister, Jeanette Stephens of Amarillo; brother-in-law, Cliff Phelps of Yukon, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 411 Plummer, Darrouzett, TX 79034, or Heartland Hospice, 3210 W. Kellogg, Wichita, KS 67213.

James ‘Mike’ Powell

James “Mike” Powell, 57, died Tuesday, June 5, 2012, surrounded by his friends and family.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Friday, June 8, at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary Chapel, Clearwater.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean Hughes and Eva Pierpoint. Survivors include his wife, Linda (Fleming) Powell; son, Tyler Powell; and sister, Connie (Greg) Fleming of Clearwater.

Memorials may be sent to DaVita Wichita At Home, 909 N. Topeka St. Wichita, KS 67214.

Richard Brown

Richard (Dick) Brown, 86, passed away May 24, 2012. He was born in Aurora, Ill., to Cora and Earle Brown.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Phyllis; daughter, Susan (Mark Sanny) of Murdock; son, Steve Brown (Connie) of Locust, N.C.; and beloved grandson and best friend, James Sanny (Abi) of Wichita. Richard also leaves a host of loving care-givers both at Cornerstone Assisted Living Facility Ridge Road and at Dr. Troung’s office where he shared his pain, his joy and his jokes.

He served under Douglas MacArthur in the Judge Advocate General’s office in the Pacific in World War II and then came home to marry his childhood sweetheart, Phyllis Mangas. Richard retired after a long career with Lyon Metal Products as a regional manager. He was a master set designer and builder for the Glen Ellyn Theatre Guild in Illinois for years. He was also a Scout Master, band manager, tennis coach and grandfather extrodinare.

Beyond his family and God, Richard loved a good joke and shared them all. He spent his retirement taking care of others including Meals On Wheels, visiting hospitals and care homes, and bringing toys and clothing to battered Women’s shelters. Driven by a strong work ethic he went back to work in his 80s and drove for Lubbers in Cheney for several years. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rosamond Dick and Henry Dick

Rosamond Mary (Erny) Dick, 83, Milton, farmwife and retired bookkeeper, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012. Her husband Henry Nicholas Dick, 86, Milton, farmer and retired owner of Henry Dick Digging, passed away Monday, May 28, 2012.

A double vigil service and rosary will be held Friday, June 1, at 7 p.m., and a funeral Mass for both of them will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, both at St. John’s Catholic Church, Clonmel.

Rosamond was born on Feb. 16, 1929, in Hutchinson. She was the last of three children born to her parents, John and Mary (Berns) Erny. She met the love of her life, Henry Dick, and they married on Aug. 19, 1950, at St. Theresa’s in Hutchinson.

Henry was born on Dec. 6, 1925. He was the fourth of 11 children born to his parents, Bernard and Anna (Depenbush) Dick.

Rosamond was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, James (Elmire) Erny and Louise (Richard) Lang. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Lawrence, Leonard and Sylvester Dick, Angeline (Wilbur) Ingram, brother-in-law Jimmy Sheahan. Both were preceded by their daughter Julianna Dick.

Five children survive: Charles (Nancy) Dick, Rita (Dan) Jones, Steven (Linda) Dick, Norbert (Karla) Dick all of Milton, and Rosanne (Allen) Woolf of Cheney. Henry is survived by his siblings, Alfred (Margaret Ann) Dick, Lucille Sheahan, Wichita, Paul (Aurora) Dick, and Martin (Trish) Dick of Spivey, Daniel (Mary) Dick of Fairfax Station, Va., Doreen (David) Reida of Garden Plain, sisters-in-law Mildred Dick of Parsons, Dorothy Dick of Halstead, and Bernice Dick of Wichita; 20 grandchildren, Jennifer (Brad) Murray, Chad (Kindra) Dick, Erika (Kyle) Grandy, Tyler (Danielle) Dick, Aaron Woolf, Julie (Jarrett) Griffin, Andrea (James) Twedell, Keith Jones, Patrick Jones, Deanna Jones, Rebecca (Barry) Jenkins, Michelle Lane, Amanda (Randy) Daugherty, Lori (Justin) Tayler, Jody (Kyle) Pringle, Stephanie (Joe) Vulgamore, Michael (Sarah) Dick, Martin (Melissa) Dick, Randy (Rachel) Dick, Scott Dick; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Jean Seiwert

Jean Marie Seiwert, 74, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 10. She was a retired employee of Garden Plain State Bank, member of the Daughters of Isabella and the Altar Society at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Alphons and Genevieve (May) Scheer and brother, LaRue Scheer. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Lawrence Seiwert, Jr children: Dale (Linda) Seiwert, Chris (Deanna) Seiwert, Dan (Melissa) Seiwert, Laurie McPhillips, Vickie (Bill) Callahan, Lisa (Keith) Hansen, grandchildren: Nicole, Kim, Megan, Madison, Nicholas, Ty, Cameron, Callie, Christian, Candace, Kelsie, Jacob, Justin, Zachary, Noah, Trey, and Kolten and great-grandchild, Edward, siblings: Maurie (Rita) Scheer, Corrine (Alphonse) Simon, Ruth Peters, Irene (Gary) Laney, Laurie Lee Rawlins, and Eugene (Anne) Scheer.

Rosary was held Tuesday, June 12 at 7, and Mass of the Christian Burial was held Wednesday, June 13 at 10:30; both at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Garden Plain. Services will be officiated by Father Sam Pinkerton. Memorials have been established with the Alzheimer’s Association and The Garden Plain Senior Citizen’s Center.

Enid Hood

Enid Elaine Hood, age 84, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend of Carrollton, Texas, passed away at home on Sunday, June 24, 2012. She was born May 18, 1928 in her home on Hill Farm near Niobrara, Neb., to Earl and Margery Barington.

She attended country school in the hills of Niobrara and then graduated from Niobrara High School. She then taught school in the same country school that she attended while continuing to live where she was born, on Hill Farm. She married John Ellingson in Yankton, S.D., in 1945. They lived in Niobrara and moved to several different locations in Nebraska as John worked for the Chicago and North Western Railroad and was required to move and work at several railroad locations.

They raised four children in Blair and Norfolk, Neb.: Diane, Jim, Lori and Mike.

Enid had a great love of flowers and all living things. Every place that she lived, she had a large room or rooms for indoor plants and flowers. The outdoors always had an elaborate display of flowers, special planters, and yard art.

Enid was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Margery Barington; husband, John Ellingson, Harlan Hood and her daughter Diane McGee. She is survived by her son Jim Ellingson and family of Fort Worth, Texas, daughter Lori Alexander and family of Carrollton, and son Mike Ellingson and family of Goddard; grandchildren, Shaylah and Raini of Fort Worth Texas, Eann, Evan and Ethan of Goddard; and great-grandchildren Treyten, Tyler, Nia, Jordan, Lainey and Cayn of Fort Worth. She loved being around her grandchildren and loved having them visit and seeing them at their varied activities.

A family memorial service to celebrate her life will be held July 1 at a place to be named later in Fort Worth.

Dr. Michael Herndon

Michael Lawrence Herndon, D.V.M., 63, retired veterinarian, passed away June 17, 2012. He was born Jan. 30, 1949, in Wichita.

He attended Friends University and Kansas State University where he obtained a Bachelor Degree in Biological Science (1971) and a Doctorate Degree of Veterinary Medicine (1975). After graduation, he practiced at the Cheney Animal Clinic in Cheney and then established the Herndon Veterinary Clinic in Wichita. His life was fulfilled with great family support and many friends through the years.

He is survived by his amazing parents, Dr. Billy Bob and Mary Lou (Wilkins) Herndon, who he dearly loved; wife Peggy L. (Schulte) Herndon, who not only was his loving wife, but also his best friend and a solid rock in his marriage to her for 35 years; daughters, Carolyn K. Herndon (Greg Henke, Tayler, Katey, and Tatym) of Burrton, Kan., and Jaclyn L. Herndon of Cheney; sons, Joseph M. Herndon, Dustin J. (Brooke) Herndon, and Billy B. Herndon, all of Denver; grandchildren; Raelyn, Caeden, and Cayle. Sister, Sherry (Mike) Elder of Wichita, brothers, Dr. James (Sandy) Herndon of Goddard, Mark (Jolene) Herndon of Goddard; and many nephews and nieces.

A private family service was planned at his request. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Harry Hynes Hospice, 313 S. Market Wichita, KS 67202; the Children’s Miracle Network, 723 N. Mclean Blvd #310 Wichita, KS 67203; or to the Kansas State University Veterinary School in memory of Michael L. Herndon, D.V.M., in care of the KSU Foundation Alumni Division Office, 103 Trotter Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506. His final resting place is at Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Goddard.

Kitty Schisler

Kitty M. Schisler, 86, homemaker from Cheney, died Monday, June 18, 2012. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 22, at Pioneer cemetery in Cheney. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain.

She is survived by a son, Dwayne Lawson of Springfield, Mo., daughter Kitty D. Vielandi of Woodstock, Mo., and four grandchildren.

Richard ‘Dick’ Brown

Richard “Dick” Brown, 86, passed away May 24, 2012. A memorial will be held at Cornerstone Assisted Living, 3636 N. Ridge in Wichita, on June 23 at 2 p.m.

He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 65 years, Phyllis, daughter Susan (Mark) Sanny of Murdock, son Steve Brown (Connie) of Locust, North Carolina and beloved grandchildren James Sanny (Abi) of Wichita, Jennifer (Butch) Lilly and Ashley (Kelly) Davis of North Carolina. He served under Douglas MacArthur in the JAG office in the Pacific in World War II, came home and married Phyllis, eventually retiring from Lyon Metal Products as a regional manager. Richard loved a good joke and shared them all.

Richard started the Cheney Public Library friends group and drove for Lubbers until he was 83.
