Father Reinhard Eck

Father Reinhard C. Eck, age 87, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012. He was born Oct. 20, 1924, in St. Joe Ost, Kansas. He was ordained in his home parish June 8, 1950, by Bishop Mark K. Carroll. Over the past 62 years, he has served many parishes in the Wichita Diocese.

Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Andale. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Bishop Michael O. Jackels will celebrate the Mass.

Survivors include his brothers, the Rev. Ivan C. Eck of Ost, Kan., and George E. and wife Joyce Eck of McClean, Texas; sisters, JoAnn Becker of Garden Plain and Ida Rau of Wichita; 40 nieces and nephews; 155 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 134 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John P. and Anna Thimmesch Eck; brothers, Alphons, Urban, Father Vincent, Rusty and Joseph; and sister, Mary Scripsick.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church starting at 11 a.m.

Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain is in charge of arrangements.

Rhonda (Brozek) Brownfield

Rhonda Ellen (Brozek) Brownfield, 45, of Centertown, Mo., passed away on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at St. Mary’s Health Center, Jefferson City, M.. She was born on Nov. 19, 1966, in Wichita, the daughter of Ronald and Lana (Slaughter) Brozek, Cheney, both of whom survive.

She was married on Nov. 24, 1995, in Little Rock, Ark., to Jim Brownfield, who survives of the home. Rhonda graduated from Cheney High School, Cheney. She then attended Wichita State University, obtaining a degree in accounting. She had worked as a CPA for Arkansas Children’s Hospital, Little Rock, and was employed with Gordon Commercial Real Estate, Jefferson City.

Rhonda loved being outdoors and spending time on the farm, feeding and watching hummingbirds. In addition to her parents and husband, she is survived by two brothers, Scott Brozek and wife Sandy, and Tim Brozek, both of Cheney; one sister, Melinda Henry and husband Travis, of McPherson; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, George and Bonnie Brozek, of Luray, Kan., and her maternal grandparents, Fenton and Grace Slaughter, of Elston, Mo.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. at Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California, Mo. Burial will be in New Hope Cemetery, Centertown, Mo. Officiating will be the Rev. Steve Jones. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice, c/o Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, 100 S. Oak, California, MO 65018. Arrangements are under the direction of Bowlin-Cantriel Funeral Services, California, Mo.

Marcia D. Panek

Marcia D. Panek, 56, retired Dillons employee, died Aug. 5, 2012, surrounded by her family at her home in Garden Plain. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister who enjoyed gardening, decorating, cooking, antiquing and spending time with her family.

She was born Aug. 16, 1955, in Wichita and was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Garden Plain. She was preceded in death by her parents, B.Lyle and Margaret Piland. On Aug. 11, 1973, she married Ed Panek. Other survivors, all of Garden Plain, include their four daughters and their husbands, Lena and Chris Grill, Rachelle and Dwight Haukap, Janelle and Chris Durham, and Lelissa and Mike McKim; brothers, Greg and Brad Piland, both of Wichita; and 12 grandchildren, Caleb, Kyle and Alec Grill, Colby, Collin, Aubrey and Ethan Haukap, Andrew, Elijah and Abby Durham, and Logan and Raegan McKim.

Rosary will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, and Mass of Christian burial will at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, both at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Garden Plain. Friends may call 1-5 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston Funeral Home. Burial will be in the St. Anthony Catholic cemetery in Garden Plain.

Memorials may be made with the St. Anthony’s Pro-Life Outreach, Garden Plain, and the Scleroderma Foundation, both in care of the Funeral Home.

Livingston Funeral Home of Kingman was in charge of arrangements.

Isabel Beard

Isabel Beard, age 91, retired Southwestern Bell Operator, died Wed. Oct. 31, 2012. Services were held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the 47th Street Church of Christ.

She was receded in death by her parents, Karl and Sarah (Kneebone) Korner; husband, Warren F. Beard, Sr.; daughter, Linda Schmidt; sisters, Dorothy Buford, Leona Korner; and granddaughter, Hillary Schmidt.

Survivors include her children, Lauren Massey of Wichita, Rick (Flo) Beard of Haysville, Sara (Kim) Eck, of Wichita, Jim (Merrie) Beard of Norman, OKla.; son-in-law, Kent Schmidt of Wichita; 12 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202 or 47th St. Church of Christ, 601 W. 47th St. S., Wichita, KS 67217.

Webb-Shinkle Mortuary, Clearwater, was in charge of arrangements.

Dean Craft

Dean Craft, 62, of Cheney, died on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, in Cheney.

Craft was born on Sept. 14, 1950, in Eureka, Kan. He was a machinist for Cessna Aircraft Company.

Survivors include three sons, Jeffery Craft of Wichita, Danny Dean Craft and wife, Andrea, of Cheney, and Jason Eric Craft and wife, Melanie, of Bel Aire; two sisters, Ruth Ellen Comer and Emma Jan Taylor; and 13 grandchildren.

Viewing with family present took place Wednesday, Nov. 7 at Wulf-Ast Mortuary in Garden Plain from 5-7 p.m. The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at Wulf-Ast Mortuary.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Roszella Engel

Roszella Ruth Mishler Engel, 93, died on Oct. 30, 2012 in Halstead. She was born on June 2, 1919, in Palmer, Iowa and lived her first 81 years in that state, moving to Cheney in 2000 to be near family, after losing her vision in one eye due to glaucoma.

She married Arthur C. Engel on Feb. 18, 1940. He died Feb. 14, 1980.

Survivors include daughters, Janie Weathers of Beaumont, Texas, Larinda Seagren and husband Wayne of Marion, Iowa; twin sons, Verne Engel and wife Rachel of Raytown, Mo., Verle Engel and his wife Elda of Cheney; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Erna Ricklefs of Pocahontas, Iowa; and special friends, Joyce Hefley, Andrea Wise and Nancy Recker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur Engel; son, Lamont Engel; grandson, Kyle Engel; two sisters; one brother and a daughter-in-law.

Funeral service was at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 2, 2012 at Cheney Baptist Church, Cheney with Reverend Keith Peters presiding. Burial was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov 4, 2012 in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Palmer, Iowa.

Thomas Helten

Thomas J. Helten of Garden Plain, 60, died October 24, 2012 in Hutchinson. H was born July 18, 1952 in Wichita. Thomas worked as a brick tender.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Helten, and brother, Gregory Eugene Helten. Survivors include his mother, Margaret Helten of Garden Plain; brothers, Gene and Kathy Helten of Garden Plain, Gary Helten of Wichita, Kenny and Debbie Helten of Garden Plain, and Danny and Denise Helten of Murdock; sisters, Mary Jane and Gregg Hays of Derby, Barb and Larry Goode of Cheney, and Debbie and Carl Richards of Garden Plain.

Visitation and rosary were Friday, Oct. 26. Funeral Mass was at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain. Interment was at St. Anthony Cemetery, Garden Plain.

Memorials may be sent to St. Anthony Catholic Church, Garden Plain.

Laura Velasquez

Laura Gaynelle (Roberts) Velasquez, 56, made it safely home to heaven, a beautiful crisp morning on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012. Her loving husband, Brian, of 36 years, and her best friend Linda, were by her side at her home in Reading, Kansas.

Laura was born June 3, 1956 in Fayetteville, Arkansas to Robert and Martha (Hendrix) Roberts and was raised in Pittsburg, Kan.

Laura met Brian Velasquez on Oct. 31, 1975 and they married on Jan. 8, 1977. Their love for each other is strong and everlasting. Together they raised their family of eight children primarily in Anthony and Reading.

Laura was a dedicated wife and mother and home educator. She was a member of HSLDA and CHECK.

Laura is survived by her husband, Brian Velasquez of the home; her children, Ellen (David) Young of Osage City, Kyle (Katie) Velasquez of Dayton, Ohio, Anna Velasquez and Zach Martin of Salina, Sharon (Aaron) Kuhn of Essexville, Mich., Charlene (Edward) Patterson of Berryton, Neal and Noah Velasquez of Reading; grandchildren, Aiden Young, Lilly Young, Grace Young and Jana Velasquez; her parents, Robert and Martha Roberts of Pittsburg; a brother, Mark (Kathy) Roberts of Omaha, Neb.; a sister Melody (James) Ellis of Cheney; father in law, Harold Velasquez of Berryton; best friends, Linda and Steve Dick, and Stacy Crow; brothers-in-law, Jonathan (Terry) Velasquez and Christian (Jenee) Velasquez; a sister-in-law, Beth Velasquez; six nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Marlene Ruth Velasquez; sister-in-law, Allison Marie Velasquez and mother-in-law, Lillian Marie Velasquez.

Funeral service was held, 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at the Mt. Pleasant Community Church in Lyndon. Graveside service followed at 4:00 p.m. at Freeport cemetery in Freeport. The family received friends, Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the VanArsdale Funeral Chapel in Osage City. Memorial contributions may be made to the Velasquez Family and sent in care of VanArsdale Funeral Chapel, 107 N. Sixth, Osage City, KS 66523.

Dorothy Graf

Dorothy Alien (Cox) Graf, 82, of Cheney died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012 at Park West Assisted Living. She was born Oct. 20, 1930 to Clarence Everett Cox and Lucille Blanch Palmer. Survivors include Mike and Gail Graf, and Dan and Shirley Graf of Wichita; Charlene and Dennis Lyons, Mark and Linda Graf of Cheney; Kathleen Graf of Aurora, Colo.; Darlene and Dwight Moran of Kingman; Patrick and Jitana Graf of Colwich; 34 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and a brother, Clarence Cox, Charlotte, N.C.

She was preceded in death by husband Ralph Graf; parents Clarence and Lucille Cox; and stepfather, Paul Baird.

A rosary was held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at St. Joe Ost and services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 31 with burial at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Memorials can be made to Starkey’s Wichita and or Heartspring.

Mark Harrison

Mark Vernon Harrison, 59, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012 at Newman Hospital in Emporia, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.

He was born Nov. 5, 1952 in Russell, the son of Jack Vernon and Freda Marie Dudley Harrison. Mark attended grade school in Palco and Cheney, moving to Madison in 1967. He graduated from Madison High School in the Class of 1971 while also attending Vo-tech school in Emporia.

Mark was joined in marriage to Diane Dee Ziegler on Aug. 7, 1971 in Madison. He owned and operated Harrison Body Shop and Auto Repair in Madison with his son, Jason and worked as a contract oilfield pumper. He loved attending his grandchildren’s school and sporting events and spending time with family and with friends. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, car racing and hunting. Mark was a member of the Madison Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Harrison of the home; a son, Jason Dean Harrison of Madison, two grandchildren, Kortnie Diane and Chase Alan Harrison of Madison; a brother, Russell Harrison of Cheney. Mark was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Roger Harrison.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the Madison United Methodist Church. Burial followed services at Number 8 Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the VanArsdale Funeral Home in Madison. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison Volunteer Fire Department or the Madison Chamber of Commerce (Park Fund) and sent in care of the funeral home.

Alice Sittler

Alice Lorraine (Jaax) Sittler, 89, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Oct. 26, 2012. She was born Nov. 8, 1922 to Carl and Sophia (Albers) Jaax at St. Mary’s Aleppo, Kan.

She grew up on a farm near Wichita. She graduated from Maize High School and worked at Cessna Aircraft during World War II. She met her future husband, Louis J. Sittler, at a barn dance at St Mary’s; they were married March 5, 1946 and began their life of farming and raising a family near Garden Plain.

Lorraine loved planning and cooking meals, visiting cousins and friends, polka dancing, watching basketball games, and being with her grandkids and great-grandkids.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Louis, of the home; brother, Carl T. Jr. (Karon) of Wichita; daughters, Rosa Ann (Rich) Kozera and Mary Shankle of Wichita, Virginia (Jerry) Starks, of Keenesburch, Colo., Jane (Jim) West of Stillwater, Okla.; seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren.

Visitation and a Rosary were held on Monday at St. Mary’s Aleppo. Mass of Christian burial and internment were held on Tuesday at St. Mary’s Aleppo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Mary’s Altar Society or to the Garden Plain Senior Center. Wulf-Ast of Garden Plain handled the arrangements.
