Richard E. Avery

Graveside inurnment services for Richard E. Avery, 60, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Avery died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at his home. He retired as a police officer for the Kansas University Public Safety Department after nearly 20 years of service.

Local survivors include a brother, Gary Avery and wife Rita, Lawrence.

Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Robert C. “Bob” Biszantz Jr.

Funeral services for Robert C. “Bob” Biszantz Jr., 64, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, with Chaplain Paul Reed officiating. Cremation will follow the services, and inurnment will be later in Arlington National Cemetery.

Mr. Biszantz died Sunday, January 16, 2011, at his home.

He was born Apr. 19, 1946, in Lakewood, Ohio, the son of Robert C. and Gloria Broadhurst Biszantz Sr.

Mr. Biszantz attended military school from the age of 13 in Gainesville, Georgia. After he graduated he joined the United States Coast Guard, enlisted in the U.S. Navy for four years and returned to the US Coast Guard until his retirement in 1992 due to health. He retired after 27 years of service as a CWO4.

He married Patricia L. Roche on Jan 3, 1981. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Heather W. Meehan and husband Tim, Eagle, Neb., and Sandi B. Howard and husband Brad, Lakeland, Fla.; a brother, John Biszantz, Medina, Ohio; three sisters, Susan Galati, Bowie, MD, Marcia Richling, Medina, OH, and Kati Biszantz, Temecula, Calif.; and three grandchildren, Caleb and Micaela Meehan and Robert Howard.

Friends may call Wednesday from noon to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Assocation, in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana, Lawrence, KS 66044.

Alonzo E. Howard

Graveside services with military honors for Alonzo E. Howard, 87, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Howard died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

He was born Mar. 29, 1923, in El Dorado, Kan., the son of Alonzo and Cordelia Dee Mitchell Howard. He served in the United States Army, where he received the Good Conduct Medal and two Bronze Service Stars.

Mr. Howard was a self-employed painting contractor. He was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church.

He married Marilyn Kay Wales on October 24, 1981, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other surviviors include nine children, Earlene Pone, Colorado Springs, Alonda Martin, Aurora, Colo., Steven Howard and Renee Candies, Denver, Pierre Howard, and Patrick Roberts, Lona Roberts, Heidi Roberts, and Wayne Roberts, all of Lawrence; four sisters, Bessie White, Chicago, Christina Johnson, Lawrence, Dottie Coates, Kansas City, Kan., and Peggy Thompson, Kansas City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Daisy Smith, Mary Kathryn Sweeps, and Barbara Taylor.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alonzo Howard Memorial Fund, in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana Street, Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Susan R. Simpson

Graveside memorial services for Susan R. Simpson, 68, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Simpson died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 12, 1941, in Appleton, Wisc. She attended schools in Appleton, and graduated from Appleton High School. She moved to Topeka in 1977, and to Lawrence in 1980.

Mrs. Simpson worked as a claims processor and supervisor for Blue Cross/Blue Shield for 11 years, retiring in 1995. She attended St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church.

She married Robert L. “Bob” Simpson on Aug. 23, 1980, in Lawrence. He died June 1, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include children James Simpson, Lawrence, Bobbi Kearney and husband John, Valley Falls, and Tina Robbins and husband Brad, Lawrence; and seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lawrence Humane Society, or the Douglas County Friends of Children in Foster Care, in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana Street, Lawrence, KS, 66044.

W. David Fretz

Inurnment will be held at a later date for W. David Fretz, M.D. He died on December 13, 2009 at Medicalodges Eudora.

He was born on January 23, 1947 in Eldorado, KS the son of Isaac K. and Beatrice Keene Fretz.

He was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Vietnam War.

He graduated from Fort Hays State University in 1969. He received his doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

With bright eyes and a quick smile he walked through life. Taught Kansas Tradition as he listened to Max broadcast the Jayhawk games on the radio. A man of principle who had compassion. His passion was learning. The tools he gave to society ranged from being a doctor to being a father. Teaching all of us to be a Jayhawk. Teaching us to live. We learned to cherish life. Every day was a blessing. The Jay Doc went to heaven on his own terms. Through us he lives on as we strive for excellence in life.

He married Deborah “Debbie” Gregory on January 10, 2004. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include three sons, Willie Pless and wife, Rhonda of Edmonton Alberta, Canada, David Fretz, Lawrence, Isaac Fretz, and wife, Fran, Norman, Oklahoma; one daughter, Tracey Elder, and husband, Shannon, Neosho, Missouri; one brother, Fred Fretz, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Shamelle, Mariette, Siarra, Arce, Maria, Ashley, Carter.

Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the W. David Fretz Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Ruth Marie Cyr

Graveside inurnment services for Ruth Marie Cyr, 80, Eudora, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eudora City Cemetery. Cremation is planned.

Mrs. Cyr died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at Medicalodges of Eudora.

She was born Dec. 3, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Noble E. and Ruby O. Casin Nelson. She attended schools in Kansas City, Mo.

Mrs. Cyr was a homemaker, and she and her husband owned and operated the Gilded Cage in Eudora for many years. She enjoyed socializing, music, and country dancing.

She married Thomas E. “Ed” Cyr in 1968 in Nowata, Okla. He died Oct. 23, 1995.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Webb, Lawrence, and Terry Baird, Eudora; three sons, Murl Hicks, Branson, Mo., James Hicks, Mesa, Ariz., and Dennis Hicks, Olathe; a brother Louis Nelson, Kansas City, Mo.; three sisters, Edith Owings, Judy Stanley, and Lela Kruse, all of Raytown, Mo.; ten grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice Advantage, in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, 601 Indiana Street, Lawrence, KS, 66044

Mary Ann King

Services for Mary Ann King, 70, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory. Cremation will follow the service.

Mrs. King died Friday, January 14, 2011, at her home.

She was born June 2, 1940, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Dr. Melvin and Ruth Howard. She graduated from Central High School, and attended Stephens College in Colombia, Missouri. She earned a B.A. in Education from the University of Kansas in 1962.

She taught in the Lawrence school district for 2 years. She married O. Newton King, on August 11, 1962. The couple owned and operated King Pharmacy in Lawrence for more than 30 years. Mary Ann was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and P.E.O, AZ Chapter. Mary Ann “Nana” enjoyed shopping, and spending time with her grandchildren at their Lonestar Lake Cabin.

She is survived by her husband Newton, of the home; daughter, Kim King, Lawrence; son, Christopher King and his wife Megan, Lawrence; five grandsons, Grant and Brenner Gollier, Harrison, Benjamin, and Joshua King, Lawrence.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association, sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044.

Vicky Lynn Hrovat

Memorial services for Vicky Lynn Hrovat, 58, rural Lawrence, are pending and will be announced by Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mrs. Hrovat died Friday, Nov, 18, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Walter R. Gibson

Graveside services for Walter R. Gibson, 85, Lawrence, will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence. Bishop John Haslem will officiate.

Mr. Gibson died Thursday, January 05, 2012, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 15, 1926, in Lawrence, the son of Walter Oliver and Lucinda May Risley Gibson. He was in the United States Army during WWII; he worked for Lawrence Technology in the maintenance department and ran the laundry mat at 19th and Haskell. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints in Lawrence. He enjoyed wood crafting, working on anything with an engine, and working with his hands.

Survivors include two sons, Gene Gibson and wife Sally, Lawrence, and Cecil Oliver Gibson, John Day, Oregon; two daughters, Freda Priest and husband Jeff, Whiting, Kansas, and Patricia Marie Gibson, Lawrence; a sister, Alta May Cruses, and husband Richard, Ottawa; four grandchildren, Matt Britton, John Gorski, Tammy Evans, and Becky Sinclair; two great-grandchildren, August Sinclair and Alexandria Sinclair.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the funeral home.

Charles E. Cullumber

Charles E. Cullumber was born on May 19th, 1928, son of Mary Brown and Clinton Cullumber. The loving husband to Geraldine Hannigan Cullumber for 60 years. The father to Charles Clinton and Gerald Cullumber; Grandfather to Alex Cullumber. Charles served in the Korean War and was later employed at Santa Fe Railroad as an electrician. He retired at the age of 62. He and his wife were residents of Linwood, KS for 40 years before moving to Baldwin City in 1999. He was a member of American Legion Post 228, Baldwin City. He was a friend to many and will be greatly missed.

The family will host a memorial service for Charles on Saturday, January 14th, 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm at the American Legion, 803 High, Baldwin City, KS 66006.

David C. Head

A celebration of life gathering for David C. Head, 50, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the South Park Gazebo.

Mr. Head died Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at his home.

He was born Jan. 28, 1961, in Junction City, the son of Roy and Shari Johnson Head. He is survived by his parents, and cousins Chip Mathes, South Korea, and Mary Liz Bachard, Junction City, and other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to Shari Head, 1416 Conn., Lawrence, 66044, for establishment of a fund to help others in need.

Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Esther E. Oyler

Funeral services for Esther E. Oyler, 98, Rural Baldwin City, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Willow Springs Old German Baptist Brethren Church. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill cemetery at Pleasant Grove.

Friends may call at the home of her daughter, JoAnne Shuck, on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Tifani Delores Cutty

Funeral services for Tifani Delores Cutty, 25, Lawrence, will be at 7:30pm Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.

Ms. Cutty died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at her home.

She was born December 14, 1985 in Lawton OK, the daughter of Tamie Simonsen and John Paul Cutty. Tifani attended Perry High School and completed some online classes.

She Married David Matter in December, 20, 2003 in Lecompton. They later divorced.

Tifani worked for Doug and Marge Lawrence as a behavioral therapist, working mostly with children and young adults with autism.

Surviving family includes her beautiful daughter Journee Matter, mother; Tamie Simonsen and husband Timothy, Perry; father John Paul Cutty and wife Daisy, Lawton, OK; one brother, Timothy Seigler, Bartlesville, OK; one sister, Tisha Fielding, Perry, two nieces, Khloey and Stallina Seigler, Bartlesville , and four nephews, Dustin and Tavor Seigler, Bartlesville, Sterling and Wesley Fielding, Perry.

Friends may call noon to 8 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.

Family suggests memorial contributions go to the Tifani Cutty Memorial Fund, in care of the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana, Lawrence, KS 66044.
