Howard K. Walker
1911-2004

Graveside services for Howard K. Walker, 92, Emporia, were Monday, March 29, at Key West cemetery near Lebo.

Mr. Walker died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at the Vintage Manor in Emporia.

He was born Sept. 6, 1911, at Ness City, the son of George I. and Lynda A. Zickefoose Walker. He spent his early life in the Burlington area. He lived in Olivet and farmed for many years.

Mr. Walker worked for the Niles Family Farm for 28 years at Lebo and later worked as a custodian at Iowa Beef Packers in Emporia for many years before he retired.

He married Ruby Schultz McCabe Sept. 16, 1940. She died Feb. 2, 1984.

Survivors include a daughter, Martha E. Shaw, Olpe; a son, Dale D. Walker, De Soto; two stepsons, Roland McCabe of California, and Kenneth McCabe, Council Grove; a sister, Iva Mays, Waverly; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A son, Clifford I. Walker, died in February 2004. Two brothers and two sisters also died earlier.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hand in Hand Hospice, sent in care of the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home, 107 West Sixth, Lebo 66846.

Greta M. Heatherly
1917-2004

Services for Greta Mae Heatherly, 87, were Wednesday, April 14, at Farris-Feuerborn Memorial Chapel, Garnett, with the Rev. George Pasley officiating. Burial was in Garnett Cemetery.

Mrs. Heatherly died Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Golden Heights Living Center, Garnett.

She was born March 9, 1917, in Garnett, the daughter of Anthony Cyril and Isabella (Coats) Britton.

Mrs. Heatherly worked many years on the assembly line at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto. She also worked as a waitress and at Arkhaven Nursing Home in Garnett.

She married John Bell on Aug. 3, 1934. They later divorced. She married James Kenneth Heatherly on July 26, 1947. He died Nov. 13, 1993.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Jane Mersman, Garnett, and Jo Ann Lickteig, Olathe; a sister, Gwen Benus, Olathe; 17 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Cyril Britton; seven sisters, Eva Brownrigg, Ethel Warren, Edith Macklin, Doris Badger, Margery Britton, Jane Britton and Marguerita Lopp; and a grandson.

Randall Leon Shumaker
1947-2004

Services for Randall Leon Shumaker, 56, Englewood, Fla., are private.

Mr. Shumaker died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at his home.

He was born Aug. 3, 1947, in Nevada, Mo., the son of Raymond Leon and Goldie Ruth Cecil Shumaker.

Mr. Shumaker served in the Vietnam War. He was a carpenter and worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto for more than 30 years.

He married Sharon G. McMillian. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Danal J. Shumaker, Norristown, Pa., and Todd A. Shumaker, De Soto; a sister, Karen S. Sibel, Roeland Park; two brothers, Jack R. Shumaker, Leavenworth, and Roy A. Shumaker, Bentley.

A sister, Kathy Wilhm, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Aug. 21 at Cedar Crest Funeral Home, De Soto.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota FL 34238.

Ernestine M. Tripkos
1927-2004

Services for Ernestine Marie

"Stinky" Tripkos, 76, De Soto, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at De Soto United Methodist Church. Burial will be at De Soto Cemetery.

Mrs. Tripkos died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Olathe Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Olathe, the daughter of Ernest and Emma Kelly Hirning.

She was a lifelong De Soto resident.

She was a clerk at the De Soto Post Office for 26 years and served as acting postmaster from 1976 to 1977. She retired in 1990 and spent time at her summer home at Sunrise Beach, Lake of the Ozarks.

Mrs. Tripkos was a lifetime member of the De Soto Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary Post No. 6654 and a member of De Soto United Methodist Church.

She was married to Virgil Tripkos for 50 years. He died June 27, 1998.

Survivors include a daughter, Tina Twidwell, De Soto; a son, Todd Tripkos, De Soto; three sisters, Julia Polfer, Lenexa, Emma Jean Taylor, Eudora, and Lou Davidson, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel in De Soto was in charge of arrangements.

LeRoy D. Raines
1933-2004

Memorial services for LeRoy Dale Raines, 71, Westwood, were Saturday, Sept. 4, at Antioch Church in Overland Park.

Mr. Raines died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Baptist Lutheran Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo.

He was born March 13, 1933, in Ames, Iowa, the son of Ruth Preston Raines and Thurston Crosse.

He served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959 and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Mr. Raines was active in the Shawnee Mission Radio Control Club and the Christian Motorcycle Association and United Side Car Association.

He married his wife Dorothy on June 16, 1956 in Olathe. She died in 1999.

Survivors include four sons, Bill Raines and Tom Raines, both of Liberty, Mo., Jim Raines, De Soto, and Bob Raines, Linwood; a daughter, Karen Carnal, Merriam; a brother, Carroll Raines, Olathe; a sister, Joy Shewchuck, Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family suggests memorials to the Keith Worthington Chapter of ALS, sent in care of Cullen Funeral Home, P.O. Box 931, Raymore, MO 64083.

Ruth V. Connett
1922-2004

Graveside services for Ruth V. Connett, 82, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Connett died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.

She was born Jan. 23, 1922, in Syracuse, Kan., the daughter of Paul and Eudora Walton Womeldorf. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 1940 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Friends University in Wichita in 1943. She also received a master's degree in education from Kansas University in 1966.

Mrs. Connett taught in Lawrence, Parsons, Topeka and De Soto in the special education departments. She was a member and had served as an officer of Tau chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa honorary sorority for female educators. She also was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

She married David Spencer. They divorced. She married James E. Connett on March 17, 1962, in Shawnee. He died May 23, 2001.

Survivors include three daughters, Paula Connett-Crouse, Karen Oberzan and Marilyn Amyx, all of Lawrence; a brother, Harry Womeldorf, Rochester, N.Y.; a sister, Lois McAlister, Shawnee; and four grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care in Douglas County, sent in care of the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1260, Lawrence 66044.

Josephine F. Hensley
1923-2004

Memorial services for Josephine F. Hensley, 81, De Soto, were Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel in De Soto.

Mrs. Hensley died Monday, Oct. 17, 2004.

She was born March, 3, 1923, in Crystal Springs, Miss., the daughter of Louis and Lona Farmer.

She married Chunky Hensley. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, James Hensley; three daughters, Kathy Goodridge, Janet Smith and Teresa Collier; a twin sister, Catherine Turner; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Dortha J. Garrison

Graveside inurnment services for Dortha J. Garrison, 87, Linwood, KS, will be held at 1p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Oak Hill cemetery in Lawrence.

She died on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Medicalodges of Eudora.

Mrs. Garrison grew up in Arkansas. She was a retired secretary at the University of Kansas in the Sponsored Program Accounting Department.

She was very interested in music, crafts and sports. During her high school years, she played the clarinet and the bassoon in the marching band and she also played the piano. She and her husband loved to attend craft shows and the Wednesday evening band concerts in the South Park. She was an avid supporter of her grandchildren’s athletic events at Baldwin High School and also KU sporting events. She loved working in her home and garden.

She was married to Jack Fine in Van Buren, AR. They were later divorced. She later married Kenneth Garrison in Platte City, MO. He preceded her in death on May 17, 2008.

Survivors include two daughters: Rita Fine, of Lawrence, KS, Rebecca Rich, of Hartford, KS, two sons; John Garrison, of Lawrence, KS, Tom Garrison, of Lawrence, KS, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Warren Fine.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Lawrence City Band or the Lawrence Food Pantry and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Kenneth R. Snow
1932-2004

Funeral services for Kenneth R. Snow, 72, Eudora, were Tuesday, Oct. 19, at First Southern Baptist Church in Eudora. Burial was at Eudora Cemetery.

Mr. Snow died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 11, 1932, in Ozark, Ark., the son of Walter and Bonnie Conatser Snow.

Mr. Snow worked for Hercules Inc. in De Soto for 40 years before retiring as a maintenance supervisor in 1992. He was also a beekeeper and produced Snow's Honey. He sold his honey at several local businesses and the Lawrence Farmers' Market.

Mr. Snow was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Eudora and served on the its building committee and brotherhood. He was a past master of the Eudora Masonic Lodge and earned the rank of Life Scout as a youth in Ozark.

He married Patricia Bowers in 1953 in Topeka. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Michael Snow and Brian Snow, both of Eudora; a daughter, LaDonna Russell, Eudora; and seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Fund, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary/Eudora Chapel, 1003 John L. Williams Drive, Eudora 66025.
