Alf T.H. Oleson
1916-2004

No services are planned for Alf T.H. "Ole" Oleson, 88, Eudora. He was cremated.

Mr. Oleson died Tuesday, on Nov. 30, 2004, at his home.

He was born Nov. 15, 1916, in Independence, Mo., the son of Arild and Eva Oleson.

He grew up in Wichita and Belle Plaine and graduated from Belle Plaine High School. He graduated from Kansas University School of Pharmacy in 1940.

Mr. Oleson served in the United States Navy as a corpsman with the 72nd Seabees from 1942 to 1946.

He owned and operated Oleson Pharmacy in Eudora from 1946 to 1970 and had many clients in the De Soto area. He also worked at the pharmacy in Tonganoxie during his career.

Mr. Oleson was instrumental in locating a doctor for Eudora and building its first medical facility. He also founded Eudora Development, which paved the way for the Eudora Nursing Center.

He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Eudora.

He was a member of the Kansas State Board of Pharmacy for 64 years, Kansas Pharmacists Association and the American Legion Post No. 14 for 59 years. He was a charter member of the Eudora Lions Club and served on the Board of Directors at Kaw Valley Bank and Eudora Nursing Center.

Mr. Oleson was a member of the Eudora Board of Education for 19 years and served on the Eudora CPA Committee and Eudora Zoning and Planning Board.

He was named Citizen of the Year in 1997 and organized and implemented the Avenue of Flags at Eudora Cemetery.

He married Dorothea Ione Davidson June 1, 1941. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Vicki Downing, Henderson, Nev.; a son, Trig Oleson, Eudora; a brother, Bus Oleson, Arkansas City; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.

Two brothers, Harold Oleson and Bud Oleson, and a sister, Ruby Henshaw, preceded him in death.

Dorothy A. Ingle
1921-2004

Graveside services for Dorothy Arlene Ingle, 83, Parsons, were Tuesday, Nov. 9, at Washington Creek cemetery near Baldwin. Inurnment followed.

Mrs. Ingle died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Labette County Medical Center in Parsons.

She was born Oct. 21, 1921, in Lawrence, the daughter of John Robert and Helen Eunice Ewing Johnson. She grew up in Douglas County on a family farm and attended a country school near Lone Star.

She lived in San Diego before World War II, then returned to Douglas County to work at Sunflower Ordinance Plant near De Soto. She also had lived in Pomona and Ottawa, where she spent most of her adult life. During retirement she and her husband lived in Arkansas, Erie and Parsons.

Mrs. Ingle was a homemaker. She was a member of Church of the Brethren in Parsons.

She married Charles Wesley Ingle Sr. on July 5, 1941, in Lone Star. He died Oct. 6, 2004.

A daughter, Linda Sue Ingle, and a grandson also died earlier.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Ingle, Columbia, Mo., and Charles Wesley Ingle Jr., Lawrence.; and a daughter, Janice M. Ingle, Topeka.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care of Kansas, sent in care of Carson-Wall Funeral Home, P.O. Box 942, Parsons 67357.

Edna Corbin
1922-2004

Services for Edna "Lorie" Corbin, 82, Eudora, were Monday, Dec. 13, at Eudora United Methodist Church. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery in Lawrence.

Mrs. Corbin died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Zarah, the daughter of Harold T. and Bess Edna Leming Piper. She attended Monticello Grade School and graduated from De Soto High School.

Mrs. Corbin worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant for four years during World War II. She also worked for Independent Laundry and retired after 17 years of floral design at Owens Flower Shop in Lawrence. She was a member of Eudora Methodist Church. She was in the church choir, the church Women's Deborah Circle, the church Crocheting Club, Jolly Dozen Card Club, 1900 and Now Club and Eudora Red Hot Red Hat Ladies. She also was active in the Pinecrest Retirement Community in Eudora.

She married Charles Fredrick "Ted" Corbin in 1945, in Lawrence. He died July 29, 1987.

Survivors include a brother, Louis M. Piper, Chatham, Ill.; and two sisters, Virginia Curry, Merriam, and JoAnn Chambers, Dallas.

The family suggests memorials to the church, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1260, Lawrence 66044.

Edward E. Gates Sr.
1941-2004

Services for Edward E. Gates Sr., 63, Linwood, were Wednesday, Dec. 15, at Lawrence Funeral Chapel. Cremation was planned.

Mr. Gates died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at his home.

He was born Feb. 1, 1941, in Leavenworth, the son of John and Mary Wright Gates. He had lived in the Linwood area since 1981.

Mr. Gates served in the U.S. Army in Alaska. He worked at Gould National Battery Factory in Leavenworth and for Berkel and Co. of Bonner Springs until he retired. He then owned and operated Gates Trucking in Linwood.

He married Margaret Wriggley on Oct. 20, 1962, in Leavenworth. They later divorced.

Survivors include two sons, Edward E. "Gene" Gates Jr., Lansing, and David Gates, Leavenworth; a daughter, Patricia Brown, Leavenworth; five brothers, John Gates, North Kansas City, Mo., Lee Gates, De Soto, Charles Gates, Killeen, Texas, Ted Gates, St. Ann, Mo., and Rick Keppler, Leavenworth; two sisters, Mary Wade, Lancaster, Calif., and Carolyn Scott, Killeen; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

An infant son, James Carl Gates, died earlier.

The family suggests memorials to Toys for Tots, sent in care of the funeral chapel.

Leonard Dale Becknal
1937-2004

Memorial services for Leonard Dale Becknal, 67, De Soto, will be 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave., De Soto. Graveside services will follow at 10 a.m. at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Becknal died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Hillside Village Nursing Home.

He was born May 2, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Neil and Elsie Becknal.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda Becknal, of the home; a son, Kevin Becknal, Shawnee; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 8 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Norma June Kessell
1933-2004

A memorial service for Norma June Kessell, 71, Lenexa, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Ave., De Soto. Private graveside services will take place at the Veteran's Administration in Leavenworth.

Mrs. Kessell died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Olathe Medical Center.

She was born May 24, 1933, in Mosby, Mo.

Mrs. Kessell moved to the Lenexa/De Soto area with her husband after retirement from the United States Air Force.

She was a member of the Disciples of Christ.

She married Guy "Bud" Kessell July 1, 1955, in Salina. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Susan Head, Merriam; two sons, Randy Kessell, Lenexa, and Greg Kessell, Olathe; two sisters, Fern Dagley, Mosby, Mo., and Ruth Akin of Iowa; and three grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the American Lung Association, sent in care of the funeral home.

Marjorie A. Daigh
1928-2004

Services for Marjorie Anna Daigh, 76, Lawrence, were Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lawrence.

Mrs. Daigh died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at her home.

She was born Jan. 13, 1928, in Loveland, Colo., the daughter of Lilburn M. and Sarah Lorena Hamer Dowers.

She attended Lawrence schools and graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1945. She later attended Kansas University.

Mrs. Daigh worked at the Lawrence Paper Company in the late 1940s and at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in the early 1950s. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the YTN church ladies club and the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

She married Richard Allen "Dick" Daigh on April 30, 1950, in Lawrence. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Matt Daigh, Eudora, and Eric Daigh, Denver; two sisters, Marion Harris, Lawrence, and Doris Quisenberry, Eudora; and two granddaughters.

A daughter, Diane Michelle Daigh, died in 1957.

The family suggests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church, Lawrence Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, or Hospice Care in Douglas County, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1260, Lawrence 66044.

Charlotte M. Frost
1932-2004

Memorial services for Charlotte M. Frost, 72, De Soto, were Wednesday, Dec. 22, at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, De Soto.

Mrs. Frost died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 29, 1932, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Robert and Lavina Paxton.

Mrs. Frost was a lifelong De Soto resident. She graduated from De Soto High School in 1950. She retired from Continental Can Company in Lenexa.

She married Dale Frost Oct. 27, 1951. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Jack Frost, Lawrence; two daughters, Jill Bush, Topeka, and Jan Nixon, Eudora; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Jean Lucille Harper
1950-2004

Services for Jean Lucille Harper, 54, Lawrence, were Wednesday, Dec. 22, at North Lawrence Christian Church. Private graveside services will be later at De Soto Cemetery.

Mrs. Harper died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

She was born April 30, 1950, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Robert H. and Valeda J. Moll Gordon. She graduated from Issaquah High School in Issaquah, Wash. She received a degree in education from Kansas University.

Mrs. Harper had lived in Lawrence for the last 34 years. She worked at NCS Pearson. She had been an active member of Preceptor Gamma-Beta Sigma Phi sorority since 1998. She was also an active member of S & B Club.

Survivors include her mother, Ozawkie; four daughters, Jeanne Anne Hollis, Ozawkie, and Julie Hayward, Jennifer Harper and Julie Anderson, all of Lawrence; two sisters, Peggy Dittmar, Austin, Texas, and Linda Rixon, Lawrence; and seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to the Jean Lucille Harper Memorial Fund, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
