Floyd R. Smith
1921 - 2008

Baldwin City - Funeral services for Floyd R. Smith, 86, Baldwin City, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Baldwin City. Burial will follow at Oakwood cemetery in Baldwin City.

Mr. Smith died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at his home.

He was born May 31, 1921, in Monument, the son of Walter Ray and Iva Letta Barnett Smith. He attended schools in Salina.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army, 348 Engineering Unit, during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He attended electrical school in the Kansas City area. He moved to Quinter, where he owned and operated a filling station and a shoe store. His family moved to Baldwin City in 1953, and he worked for Hercules in De Soto, Winn-Rough Construction Company in Kansas City and also for a construction company in Topeka. He also was an electrician for Ralph Polson in Baldwin City before working at Baker University from 1965 to 1991.

Mr. Smith was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Baldwin City Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and gardening.

He married Doris Rosalie Wilds on Nov. 22, 1945, in Trego County. She died Jan. 20, 2000.

His parents preceded him in death, as did a daughter, Diana Smith, who died in 1948.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris Hinman and husband Keith, Independence, Kan., and Donna Reed and husband David, Baldwin City; three sisters, Beulah Soliz, Detroit, Dorothy Pierce, California, and Esther Johnson, Salina; five grandchildren, Ruthe Douglas, Floyd Hinman, John Hinman, Ryan Reed and Taylor Reed; a great-grandson, Payton Douglas; and a special friend, Evelyn Dalrymple, Baldwin City.

Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin City.

The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church of Baldwin City, sent in care of the funeral home, 712 Ninth Street, P.O. Box 64, Baldwin City, KS 66006.

Kimmy Jo Jennings
1965 - 2008

Stockton, Mo. - Funeral services for Kimmy Jo Jennings, 43, Stockton. Mo., will be Tuesday, May 27, at Brumback Funeral Home in Stockton. Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 26, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jennings died May 22, 2008, at St. John’s Hosptial in Springfield, Mo.

She was born Jan. 4, 1965, to Ronald and Patty Sisson and grew up in De Soto. She married Steven Durwood Jennings Jan. 24, 1987. The couple moved to Stockton in March 1996.

Mrs. Jennings was preceded in death by her parents, Ronald and Patty Sisson.

She is survived by her husband of the home; son, Jake, Stockton; daughter, Bobbie Jo, Stockton; four sisters, Becky Lobner, De Soto, Rhonda Kraus, De Soto; Mona Gower, De Soto; and Terri Berry, Bonner Springs, and many nieces and nephews.

Delores A. McClelland
1935 - 2008

Services for Delores A. McClelland, 72, Eudora, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel in De Soto. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the chapel. Graveside services will be at Eudora City Cemetery.

Ms. McClelland died Sunday, June 29, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born July 10, 1935, in Lawrence. She lived in the Lawrence area all her life. Ms. McClelland retired from Kansas University.

Survivors include two daughters, Debra Schaumburg, Eudora, and Judy Willis, Ozawkie; 14 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Rick McClelland.

Memorials to the family may be sent in care of Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, P.O. Box 101, De Soto, KS 66018.

Helen Ruth Brous
1924 - 2008

Memorial services for Helen Ruth Brous, 83, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bruce Funeral Home in Gardner. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. and burial will be at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens following the funeral.

Mrs. Brous, a longtime De Soto resident, died June 26, 2008, in Dallas, Texas, after suffering a stroke.

She was born July 31, 1924, in Trenton, Mo., to Ralph and Opal Collins. Mr. Brous received her cosmetology license after graduating from high school. She also worked in factories during World War II. She was a loving mother who balanced farming, homework, hunting and fishing.

She married Harold D. Brous March 10, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo. They moved to a farm near De Soto in 1948 and later to Paola's Hillsdale Lake in 1992. For the past nine years, she has lived in Dallas.

Mrs. Brous was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Delvin H. Collins. She is survived by a daughter, Judy Townley, Dallas.

James E. Lobner
1962 - 2008

A memorial service for James E. Lobner, 46, De Soto, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 8, at Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel, 32665 Lexington Avenue, De Soto.

The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel.

Mr. Lobner died Friday, May 2, 2008.

He was born Feb. 10, 1962, the son of Donald and Lois Lobner in Overland Park.

He went to De Soto schools and enjoyed working on old cars, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his parents; two brothers, John Lobner, De Soto, and Mike Lobner, Olathe,; and a daughter JoAnn Lobner, De Soto.

Armand T. Fisher
1922 - 2008

Lawrence - Graveside services for Armand T. Fisher, 85, Lawrence, were Tuesday, May 13, at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, south of Ottawa.

Mr. Fisher died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 16, 1922, in Ottawa, the son of Smith T. and Malinda Elizabeth Berthot Fisher.

He grew up and attended school in Peoria. He graduated from Rantoul High School in 1940.

Mr. Fisher worked for Beechcraft in Wichita before joining the Army Air Corps in September 1942.

He attained the rank of sergeant while serving in the South Pacific in World War II. He was honorably discharged in December 1945.

After the war, Mr. Fisher worked briefly for Beechcraft.

He later worked for Price Oil Co. in Ottawa, Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto, Ottawa Steel Co. and Jack Henry Construction Co. in Ottawa. He retired in 1979 as a diesel mechanic for the Lawrence Paper Co.

He was a former member of Church of the Brethren in Ottawa.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma, of the home; a daughter, Malinda F. Shortt, Lawrence; and a sister-in-law, Retta Mae Bryan, Ottawa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Ramona Darst Wynne, Helen Jenkins Lantis and Gertrude Pope.

The family suggests memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home, P.O. Box 14, Ottawa 66067.

Bonnie D. Athey
1940 - 2008

Funeral services for Bonnie D. Athey, 67, Oklahoma City, were Friday, May 9, at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial was in Overbrook Cemetery.

Mrs. Athey died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Oklahoma City.

She was born Aug. 19, 1940, in Lawrence, the daughter of Roy and Dorothy M. Malone Grammer. She lived in the Lawrence area until 1975. She moved to Tulsa in 1975 and to Oklahoma City in 2008.

Mrs. Athey worked at various jobs in Lawrence including Litwin’s clothing store, a drug store and Hallmark Cards. She attended the Church of Christ in Lawrence and various churches, including Evangelistic Temple and Hillsdale Holiness Church in Tulsa.

She married Jesse Jacob Athey Jr. on Feb. 28, 1955, in Lawrence. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Jeffery Athey, Oklahoma City, and Anthony Athey, Sapulpa, Okla.; a daughter, Bonnita Disch, Kansas City, Kan.; a brother, Frank Grammer, De Soto; and three grandchildren.

Ruby Francis Arnold
1931 - 2008

Graveside services for Ruby Francis Arnold, 77, Lawrence, will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Park cemetery in Lawrence.

Mrs. Arnold died Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Olathe Medical Center.

She was born April 8, 1931, in Polo, Mo., the daughter of Elzie and Edith Starcher. She was a resident of Polo, Mo., Kansas City, Kan., Tonganoxie, De Soto and Lawrence.

Mrs. Arnold was a homemaker and a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

She married Joseph Arnold on Aug. 27, 1973, in Miami, Okla. He died Feb. 25, 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Arnold and William Arnold; seven daughters, Evelyn Laurence, Sharon Cutburth, Cathy Purcell, Fran Bousselot, Mary Glenn, Sue Marshall and Paula Wagner; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Olathe Medical Center, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence 66044.

Travis Edward Shultz
1981 - 2008

Merriam - Funeral services for Travis Edward Shultz, 27, Merriam, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at Bruce Funeral Home in Gardner. Burial will follow in De Soto Cemetery.

Mr. Shultz died May 22, 2008, at his home.

He was born March 13, 1981, in Topeka. He was a 1999 graduate of De Soto High School. He worked in maintenance at Ridgeview Apartments in Olathe and was a member of the Life Church of Olathe.

Survivors include his father Harold “Dewayne” Shultz of Merriam; mother Jannette O’Connell of North Pole, Alaska; brothers Lale Dewayne Shultz of Gardner and Andy Ryan Shultz of Olathe; sister Hearther Deana Shultz of Satanta; grandmother Annabelle Albertin of Goshen, Ark.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Travis Shultz Memorial Fund.

Robert E. Friday
1940 - 2008

De Soto - Memorial services for Robert (Bob) E. Friday, 67, De Soto, were May 12 at Hillcrest Christian Church in Overland Park.

Burial followed at Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens

Mr. Friday died May 5, 2008.

He was born November 22, 1940 in Minneapolis, Minn., to Doris and Evan Friday. He was employed as an electrical engineer with Honeywell where he had worked for more than 40 years. He was a longtime member of the De Soto Planning Commission.

Mr. Friday is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cheryl Friday of the home; son Kevin; daughter Denise; and two brothers Richard and Phillip Friday, Minnesota.
