Essie Pauline Sanborn
Essie Pauline Sanborn, 79, of Arkansas City, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at the Medicalodge North Post Acute Care Center. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday Jan. 17, 2007, at the Ozro Falls Cemetery
near Hewins, Kan. Pauline was born in Comanche, Texas, to Burton and Lillian (Renfroe) Parkman, the oldest of four children. She was reared and educated in Texas. She married Lee Dixon at DeLeon, Texas, in 1943. They had one child and were divorced in 1944. She married Robert D. Pappen at Elgin, Kan., in 1946. They had four children and were divorced in 1951. She later married Clifford Carl Lawrence at Hewins, on Aug. 5, 1953. They had one child and farmed outside of Hewins, until 1962, and later lived in Sedan, where they both worked for Chautauqua County until Clifford's death in 1979. She married Maynard Sanborn in 1980 and they lived in Sedan until his death in 1985. She then lived in and around Newkirk, Okla. In September of 2003, she moved in to Medicalodge North and resided there until her death. Pauline was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sedan. Survivors include four sons, John W. Dixon, of Topeka, Leslie G. Pappen, of Topeka, Robert D. Pappen, of Peru, Kan., Clifford C. Lawrence, of Newkirk; two daughters, Shirley Parrett, of Kansas City, Kan., Victoria Pappen, of Arkansas City; a brother, Alvin L. Parkman, of Duncan, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and father of her children, Clifford, in 1979, husband, Maynard Sanborn, in 1985; and a granddaughter, Kimberly Pappen in 1987.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, of Arkansas City.
Ted Biby
Ted Biby, 90, Winfield, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, Wichita. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at Grace United Methodist Church. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Cremation will be effected. Family and friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday. Born Sept. 27, 1916, in Udall, the was the only child of Reuel and Jess (Davis) Biby. He worked as a self-employed carpenter and worked for many contractors. He later worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center doing carpentry and maintenance until retirement. Survivors include his wife, Lois (Akers) Biby; sons, Roger Biby and Parke Biby, Winfield; daughters, Carol Myers, Wichita, and Lela Boyer, Durango, Colo.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials have been established for Grace United Methodist Church and for Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
Vonda Lorine Topper
Vonda Lorine Topper, 72, Burden, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at her home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at the Burden Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Burden Cemetery. Born April 9, 1934, in Isabelle, Okla., she was the daughter of Ralph and Vina Reames. She worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center for a few years and was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Abraham of the home; sons, Mike Topper, Burden, and Dennis Topper, Winfield; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
A memorial has been established with Miles Funeral Service in her name to defray funeral expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
Helen Hoyt Maggard
Helen Hoyt Maggard, 78, Dexter, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Mo. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Dexter Christian Church. Interment will follow in the Dexter Cemetery. Born May 25, 1928, in Hoosier, Kan., she was the daughter of Ben and Bessie (Lower) Booher. She was a retired Wichita business owner, a bookkeeper for the Winfield Livestock Auction and a drill press operator for Boeing Aircraft. Survivors include her sons, Rex D. Hoyt, Dexter, Bryan Maggard, Columbia, Mo.; daughter, Connie Hoyt, Dexter; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Jack D. Hoyt and Lon G. Maggard; and her sister, Martha Faye Musson.
Memorials have been established for the Dexter Christian Church and the Dexter First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.
Marcelle Stahlhut Gosting
Marcelle Stahlhut Gosting, 87, longtime Kildare resident, died, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at the Walnut Place Nursing Home, Dallas. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at the First Christian Church of Newkirk, at the corner of Ninth Street and Walnut Avenue. The Rev. James Hollifield, minister of the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery
Born Nov. 28, 1920, in Newkirk, she was the daughter of Alvin C. and Nina Belle (Frick) Stahlhut. She was employed in the Kay County Court House as secretary to W.R. Hutchins in the County Extension Office. Survivors include her husband, Donald L. Gosting Sr.; a son, Don Gosting Jr., of Dallas; three granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Randy; her parents; her siblings, Calvin Stahlhut, Phyllis Blood and Alverna "Janie" Hillman.

Elizabeth Lessert Jones
Elizabeth Lessert Jones, 83, former Ponca City resident, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, in Saddleback Memorial Hospital, Laguna Hills, Calif. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at the Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Joseph Vas, minister of St. Francis Catholic Church, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery. Friends may call at the fuenral home on Friday. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Born April 16, 1924, in Ponca City, she was the daughter of William Kavanaugh and Ruth Elizabeth (O'Farrell) Lessert. She was employed as a cashier-clerk for nearly 25 years with Alpha Beta Grocery in Costa Mesa. Survivors include one son, Randy Herman, of Glennville, Ga.; one daughter, Rosalea Connor, of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; and two sisters, Marie Koopman, of Ponca City, and Jeannette Arnold of Tahlequah, Okla. She was preceded in death by two husbands, John Phillip Seidlich and Robert Warren Jones; and one brother, Adrian Kavanaugh Lessert.

Carolyn Sue (Howell) Poe
Carolyn Sue (Howell) Poe, 64, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, winged her flight to realms of day, Monday, Jan. 14, 2008. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, at Woodland United Methodist Church in Wichita. Formerly of Norwich, she was born Dec. 22, 1943, in Wichita. Carolyn was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy High School and Friends University. She graduated in 1964 with honors, receiving the Order of the Tower Award. Carolyn was a music teacher in Norwich and taught for 19 years. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star for over 25 years, Past Matron of Ascenath Chapter No. 430, and Della Chapter No. 172 in Kingman. Survivors include her husband, Jimmie L. Poe; daughters and sons-in-law, Sarah and Aaron O'Donnell and Rebecca and Rick Ohlemacher; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Agnes (DeVore) and Thomas Eugene Howell.

Betty J. Landes
Betty J. Landes, 63, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at 3:23 p.m. at Freeman West Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, in the chapel of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City, Mo., with the Rev. Bob Easton officiating. She was born Feb. 10, 1943, in Hoosier, Kan., to Ben Batdorf and Vera Etta (Tousley) Batdorf. Survivors include her sisters, Margaret Karcher, of Webb City, Velma Stilley and husband, Al, of Baxter Springs, Kan., Rosalie Hain, Susie Kincaid, Vera Kay Batdorf, all of Arkansas City, and Alice Gail Batdorf, of Dexter; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, three children, and four sisters.

James M. Miller
James M. Miller, 71, Arkansas City resident, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007, at the Ponca City Medical Center in Ponca City. The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Trout Funeral Home Chapel in Ponca City. James was born on June 26, 1935, at home in Eureka, Kan., to Ralph L. Miller and Mildred (Taylor) Miller. He graduated from Eureka High School where he met Betty Jean Nichols. On June 1, 1956, they married in Eureka. In the late 1950's they made their home in Arkansas City. Together they raised four children: Kurtis, Patty, Kristi, and Keith, who preceded his father in death in 1972. James, known as Jim to family and friends, worked over 30 years until his early retirement at ADM Mill in Arkansas City. During his retirement years he devoted his life to taking care of Betty, his wife of 50 years. Jim was an avid fisherman with Betty as his fishing partner. He also enjoyed playing his guitar with his friends and playing and singing for his children and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Betty Miller, of the home; son, Kurtis and wife, Sharon Miller, of Arkansas City, and their children, Corey and wife, Kelli Miller, of McAlister, Okla., Loretta Sigmon, of Taylorville, N.C., Kelly Miller, of Havelick, N.C., and Timothy Miller, of Arkansas City; daughter, Patricia Wall, of Winfield, and her children, Chantiel Barron, and companion, Dan Canaday, of Winfield, and Taggart and Charissa Wall, of Winfield; daughter, Kristi Newlin and husband, Terry, of Ponca City, and her children, Darci Meyer and husband, Thomas, of McPherson, Mindy Hamrick, of Weatherford, and Ryan Hamrick, of Ponca City; three great-grandchildren, Kaylee and Alissa Sigmon and Tristen Miller; two brothers, Bill Miller and wife, Neola, of Eureka, Kan., and Bob Miller and wife, Phyliss, of Columbia, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Marie; and son, Keith M. Miller.

Betty R. Barton, 74, Arkansas City, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 12007, at Medicalodge North Post Acute Center in Arkansas City.

Donald Adams
Donald Adams, 80, Winfield, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at William Newton Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Winfield. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17. The family will greet friends 6-7:30 p.m. Born May 15, 1926, in Sleeper, Mo., he was the son of William and Stella Mae (Keeney) Adams. He retired from Beech Aircraft where he worked in the heat treat department. Survivors include his son, J.C. Adams, Mobile, Ala.; daughters, Edie Jacobs, Arkansas City, and Lola Potucek, Oxford; five grandchildren; stepson, Gary Taylor; stepdaughter, Pat Hooper; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet "Vi" Adams and his 12 siblings.

Jodi LeAnn Sanderholm
Memorial services for Jodi LeAnn Sanderholm, 19, Arkansas City, who died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at the W.S. Scott Auditorium in Arkansas City. The Rev. Charles Grant, the Rev. Stephen Bailey and Pastor Brad Vogele officiated. Pianist was Stephen Butler.

Madlyn Carol Flickinger
Madlyn Carol Flickinger, 64, homemaker, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2007, at the First Mennonite Brethren Chuch, 8000 W. 21st St., Wichita. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-8 p.m. Sunday with family receiving friends from 4- 6 p.m. Survivors include her husband, Ronald, Mulvane; sons, Mark (Dianne) Flickinger, Arkansas City, and Gregory (Cindy) Flickinger, Mulvane; mother, Lucille Wann, Peck; and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Delbert Wann; and a sister, Doris Anne Bair.

Betty was preceded in death by both parents; two husbands, Bill Potter in 1987 and George Landes in 2002; three infant sons, Bruce Clayton Potter in 1962, twin sons, Randall Deon Potter and Richard Leon Potter in 1964; and four sisters, Mary Lee Batdorf, infant, Audine Huntington, DEtta Wallace, and Melba J. Barber.

Nida L. Arnold
Nida L. Arnold, 89, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Private services will be held. Nida was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Wellington, to Haynes Edward Butler and Bessie Frances (Lewis) Butler. Nida worked for a book publishing company in Tennessee. Survivors include her sister, Doris Crandall, of Arkansas City. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John R. Arnold Jr.; and two brothers, Durward Butler and Gordan Butler.

Samuel J. Stafford
Samuel J. Stafford, 86, formerly of Arkansas City, died Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at the Bentonville Manor Nursing Home in Bentonville, Ark., where he and his wife, Velma Dickson-Stafford had recently moved.
