MARILYN (MARNIE) MOHS CAMPBELL

Marnie Campbell died February 23rd, 2005 at home after a courageous battle with cancer. A celebration service will be held March 1st, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd. Prairie Village, KS 66208, Cremation.
Marnie was born September 12th, 1945 in Seattle, Washington to Myron C. and Betty Gaarenstroom Mohs both of whom preceded her in death. Marnie is survived by her husband Stephen J. Campbell; their son Christopher M. Campbell and his wife Rhonda and their son Cody M. Campbell born February 8th, 2005 of Chandler, AZ. Her brother Michael Mohs and his wife Jane of Dorchester, Ontario Canada and her mother-in-law Mrs. James W. Campbell of Lawrence, KS. Marnie grew up in the Shawnee Mission School District, graduating from Shawnee Mission North in 1963. She attended the University of Kansas and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Language Arts Education in 1967. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. In 1983 she received her Masters Degree in Special Education with honors from the University of Kansas.
Marnie began her career as an English Instructor at Topeka west High School, where she taught for two years. She and Steve moved to Houston, Texas in 1970, while he was in the Air Force for four years. While there Marnie worked for NASA as a technical editor, particularly on air-to-ground transcripts for the Apollo 14 through Apollo 17 moon missions. She especially enjoyed training in the mock-ups of the space capsules to learn technical terms and sequencing of maneuvers.
Following their return to Prairie Village and determination that their son was profoundly deaf, Marnie worked tirelessly for children with disabilities and their families beginning with the Infant Development Center and her good friend Lee Ann Brittan. She and Steve served as co-chairs of the Parent Advisory Council for the Shawnee Mission School District from 1979-80. She assisted in the passage of legislation to create the Kansas Commission for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired and was appointed by the governor to be on the first board. From 1984-1988 she served as a grant project assistant in the Interpreter Training Program at Johnson County Community College.
Marnie began a very meaningful and extremely rewarding career working with children with disabilities in 1988 when she became the director of the Hartley Family Center at the University of Kansas Medical center. Following three years there she became coordinator of the Kansas Infant-Toddler Services for the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment in Topeka. Beginning in 1995 and continuing to the present, she worked for the Kansas State Dept. of Education, as the Early education Program Consultant for children with disabilities from ages 3 to 5. She especially enjoyed traveling throughout the State of Kansas assisting local school districts and organizations in providing appropriate services for children. In her capacity Marnie served on many state, regional and national committees to develop initiatives and implement programs for children.
Marnie was a truly delightful and positive person, who will be greatly missed by her family, friends and colleagues.
The family wishes to extend special appreciation and thanks to Dr. Bernard F. Rice and his wonderful staff who gave Marnie excellent and compassionate care for twenty-seven years and provided her with time to be of service to others.

JOHN J. SYKES

John J. Sykes, Overland Park, KS passed away Thursday, February 24, 2005 at Manor Care Health Services. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Monday, February 28, 2005, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Visitation will be held Sunday, February 27, 2005 from 2-5 PM at Amos Family Chapel of Lenexa. Cremation.
John is survived by his wife Shirlee of the home, his daughter Patricia Fliginger and her husband Brent, two sons John Jr. and his wife Anne, Kevin and his wife Patricia, his sister Constance Smigla and brother Leonard Skirock, and six grandchildren.

MARY CECELIA (MAY) STOCKTON

Mary C. Stockton, 95, Roeland Park, KS passed away peacefully Thursday, February 24, 2005 at Shawnee Gardens Nursing Center where she had been since January 7, 2005. A funeral mass will be held at 10 AM, Monday, February 28, 2005 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5601 Woodson, Mission, KS. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery, Kansas City, KS. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, with a rosary at 6:30 PM. The family suggests contributions to Catholic Charities Hospice.
Mary was born November 6, 1909 to Edward and Elizabeth (Richardson) Lohr. She was a former member of Blessed Sacrament in Kansas City, KS and a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Stockton in 1992; sister Helen Lohr; and brothers, Edward and Harry Lohr. She is survived by her son, Bill Stockton (Kathy), Shawnee, KS and daughter Helen Downing (Jim), Roeland Park, KS; and sister-in-law, Edna Lohr; five grandchildren, Michael Stockton, Amy Stockton, Jay Downing (Joyce), Jon Downing (Becky), and Anne Kemp (Michael); and four great grandchildren, Emma, Anna and Jacob Downing and Addison Kemp who lovingly called her ‘Grandma Wheels’(Arrangements, Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee 913-631-5566)

HELENA M. VERHEAGHE

Helena M. Verheaghe, 79, Overland Park, KS passed away Monday, March 21, 2005, at her home. Private inurnment services will be held at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa, Kansas.

Helena was born in Kansas City, MO. She was past president and secretary of Westbrooke Homes Assn and V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Sidney C. Marjorie ‘Marge’ Swarts

Marjorie Swarts passed away March 5, 2005, at The Grand Court in Overland Park, Kansas. The family would like to invite all her friends to join them in celebrating her life. Friends may call from 6-8:00 p.m.with a rosary recitation at 5:30 p.m. at the Amos Family Chapel, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS on Wednesday, March 9. Marjorie was born in Bradford, in Yorkshire, England. She was preceded in death by her twin sister who died at birth and her husband of over 50 years, John L. Swarts who died in 1997. Marjorie and John met while he was stationed in England during WWII and she was a WREN serving with the Royal Navy. Marjorie became a US citizen in 1957. Working briefly at the Simmons Mattress Co. and selling Luzier’s cosmetics while teaching herself accounting and typing skills. Marjorie took a secretarial job at Veterans Quindaro Homes in October 1958 and very soon became the manager. While there she made many friends and gained the respect of residents as well as local and county officials not just for her tireless efforts in keeping The Homes an outstanding residential community but also for her compassionate support of the elderly as a Wyandotte County Legal Guardian. She retired in December 1994 and was recognized for her many contributions to local organizations and charities including being awarded honorary membership in the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #4 for her longtime support of the local police and their families.
Mourning her passing are her six children: son John Swarts, Prairie Village, KS; daughter Patricia Termini and husband, Stephan Johnson, Overland Park, KS; daughter Therese Iverson and husband, Michael, Shawnee, KS; daughter Jan Swarts, Overland Park, KS; son David Swarts and wife Ann, Lenexa, KS; and son Timothy Swarts and wife Anne, Lenexa, KS; her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Joan Mansell, Bishop’s Stortfort, England; her brother, George Crabtree and wife Charlotte, Saratoga, CA; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
Marjorie enjoyed shopping with her daughters, long lunches with friends, reading and collecting antiques. She will be remembered for her character, wisdom, and her many kindnesses, her love of poetry, her witty newsletters during her 36 years at Qunidaro Homes, and her ‘very proper British accent’.

LARRY JON HATZ

Larry Jon Hatz, 61, of Overland Park Kansas passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at KU Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Sat at The Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Mr. Hatz was born August 20, 1943 to Lawrence and Peggy Hatz in Sabetha, Kansas. He is survived by his wife Carolyn of the home, one daughter; Meredith Hill and her husband Michael, two grandchildren; Madison and McKenzie Baker. KATIE MAST CUTTING

Katie Mast Cutting, 100, passed away March 6th, 2005 at Lakeview Village Healthcare Center. Services will be held Friday, March 11th, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at the Amos Family Chapel of Lenexa. Friends may call from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday the 10th at the chapel.
Katie was born December 29th, 1904 in Jonesville, VA to Jacob C. and Rebecca (Orrick) Mast. She came to northwest Missouri by train in her early childhood years. She married Fred Mast and he preceded her in death in 1964. During World War II, Katie moved to Ft. Riley, Kansas where she worked as a buyer for the Ft. Riley Post Exchange. In 1969 she retired from the fort and moved to the Kansas City area. Katie is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Bennett and her husband Lester of Blue Springs; her sons, Roland Mast of Cherokee, OK, and William Mast of Kansas City, KS. She also leaves 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter Betty Jean Mast in 1926 and her son Everett Mast in 2002. ARTHUR E. MARTENS

Arthur Martens, 84, of Prairie Village, KS passed away March 23rd, 2005 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 26th, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. at the Southminster Presbyterian Church with a visitation following the service. Arthur was born March 23rd, 1921 in Harvey County, KS. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He worked 38 years as the architectural director for Russell Stover Candies. He was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder and was a member of the choir for 48 years. He married Marilyn Utermohlen September 17th, 1944 and she survives him. He also leaves his daughters Barbara Bush and her husband Jack of Denver, CO; Elaine Bell and her husband Don of Eudora, KS and his son Kent Martens and his wife Cindy of Overland Park, KS; as well as his grandchildren Andrew Bell, Eric Martens, Brooke Bell, and Alan Martens. VINCENT T. MCCARTHY

Vincent T. McCarthy of Overland Park, KS passed away peacefully at home Monday, March 7, 2005. Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Wed. March 9, 2005, at the Amos Family Chapel of Lenexa. Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be 10:30 AM, Thursday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Vincent was born in Logan Township Perth County Ontario on Jan. 8, 1927, to Daniel and Elizabeth (Gaffney) McCarthy.

Vince was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Thomas, Joseph, and John. Survivors include his wife, Sandy, Three sons, Paul of Seattle, WA, Kevin of Yorba Linda, CA, Philip of Shawnee, KS, Step-son Greg Foley (Sandy) of Olathe, Step Daughter, Susan Johnson of Overland Park, two sisters, Margaret Morrison of Mitchell, Ontario, Joan (Don) Foster of Shelby Township, MI, One brother, Kenneth (Michelle) of Etobicoke, Ontario, two sisters-in-law, Jane McCarthy, London, Ontario and Alice McCarthy of Shawnee and Alyssa McCarthy of Overland Park, KS, three step grandchildren, Jason Foley of Gardner, KS Jennifer Resner of Gardner, KS and Stephanie Johnson of Overland Park, KS and numerous nieces and nephews.

AUDREY HALE FOGLEMAN

Audrey Hale Fogleman, 97, died on March 22, 2005, in Olathe, KS. She was born in rural Thayer, KS on Jan 31, 1908, the daughter of Thad and Mary Nance Hale.
She graduated from Morehead High School in 1926 and earned her teacher’s certificate from Pittsburg State Teacher’s College. She taught the primary grades in Morehead, KS before marriage and continued to be an advocate for children’s education throughout her life. She married Truman Fogleman on May 21, 1927 and they made their first home in the new oil fields of Seminole, OK. In 1929, they moved to the Wichita, KS area and later to McPherson County in central KS. They moved to Thayer in 1944 and in 1965 to Neodesha, where she lived until 1989, when she moved to The Methodist Home in Topeka. At the time of her death she was living at the Good Samaritan Center in Olathe, KS.

Audrey was very active in the United Methodist Church and on Oct 2, 1940, she became a charter member of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service, which later became the United Methodist Women. She was a fifty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and belonged to the Federated Reading Club of Thayer.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980. She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Jane and Raymond Stafford of Westfield, NJ and Mary Jean Mosman of Lawndale, CA, seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 PM, Friday April 1st at Asbury United Methodist Church in Prairie Village and at 2:00 PM Sat. April 2 at the Neodesha United Methodist Church. ROSEMARY ELIZABETH McVEY KOOKEN LAGOMARCINO

Rosemary Elizabeth McVey Kooken Lagomarcino was born on March 7, 1926 . On her 79th birthday, March 7, 2005, she returned to our Lord’s loving arms after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Rosemary was the oldest daughter of Edward and Teresa McVey, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by Richard A. Lagomarcino, her husband of 24 years, on February 5, 2005. She will be missed every day by her family, which include her son, Donald H. Kooken, Jr, his wife, Joanie, and their children; Kristie, Matthew and Tom. Also, her daughter, Karen M. Santa Cruz, her husband, Steve, and their children; Heather, Nathan, Elizabeth and Kyle. She is also survived by two sisters and three brothers; Louise Carter, Eileen Bolin, and Edward, John and William McVey; and their families.
Rosemary’s treasures in life were her faith and family. She was a member of St. Pius X parish since 1955. She attributes much of this faith building to her family and her 12 years education at St. Vincent’s Academy. Her faith was an inspiration to her children and grandchildren, particularly throughout her illness. After many years of working to raise her children, her greatest joy in her retirement was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her energy and fun-loving spirit to be actively involved in their lives will be cherished memories of our dear mother and grandmother forever.
Visitation will be 6-9 PM, Wednesday, March 9 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, where a Rosary recitation will be at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Thursday, March 10 at the St. Pius X Catholic Church, 5500 Woodson, Mission, KS 66202; burial in the Resurrection Cemetery. RAY B. JOHNSON

Ray B. Johnson, 79, Overland Park, KS passed away Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at Garden Terrace of Overland Park.

Memorial Services will be 3:00 PM, Saturday March 26, 2005, at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church, 9300 Nall, Overland Park, KS. Mr. Johnson was born May 1, 1925, in Taney County, MO, son of Ross and Nellie Johnson. Ray was an Army Air Corp Veteran of WWII and a graduate of the University of Missouri-Rollo. He was a civil engineer. Mr. Johnson worked for the Coastal Geographic Survey, the State of Missouri Highway Department and retired from Black & Veatch after 25 years.

Ray is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Johnson of 49 years, Barbara and Steve Wiener of West Windsor, NJ, Laurie Johnson of Lenexa, KS, Beverly and Tom Kolins of Lenexa, KS and Frank and Leslie Johnson of Richmond, VT, and nine grandchildren Ray has one surviving brother, Donald and Luene Johnson of Bradleyville, MO and many nieces and nephews. EVELYN S. CADWELL

Evelyn S. Cadwell, 82, of Merriam, KS passed away March 8, 2005. Funeral services will be held 2 pm. Friday March 11, 2005 at The Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Evelyn was born March 5, 1923 in Shawnee, KS to Noah and Stella Harnden. She was formerly married to and preceded in death by Ivo F. (Pete) Loftus, and later William R. Cadwell. She is survived by two daughters; Lee Dye and Lynn Sprowl, one son; Pete J. Loftus, one sister; Anna Mae Krasick, 8 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. WILMA ARLENE GRIEBLING

Wilma Arlene Griebling of Kansas City, and formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Health Center, Kansas City, MO, following a brief illness. Her family was at her side.
Wilma was born in Mason City, Iowa, on July 29, 1913. She was the youngest of eight children born to Norwegian immigrants Sophia Louise Sjobakken Mellang and Cornelius Lindor Mellang. She grew up in Mason City, graduated from Mason City High School in 1932, and then attended Mason City Junior College.
On July 2, 1938, Wilma married James William (Jim) Griebling. They built their home in Mason City and initially owned and operated a local ice cream store until her husband went to work for the United States Postal Service. The couple had three children, James Tomas Griebling, Jana Louise Griebling Root, and Tomas Lindor Griebling. Her family was always the greatest joy in her life.
She was the executive assistant to Dean Beam in the administrative offices of the Mason City Junior College (now NIACC). She also worked as the office manager with several Mason City businesses including the chuck Busch Insurance Agency, United Home Bank, and FibraCo.
Wilma spent most of her professional career as a legal secretary working with Judges Mason and Stone in Mason City until her retirement from the bench. She then worked for many years as a private legal secretary with Mr. Fred Ontjes, a prominent Mason City attorney, who practiced law until his death at the age of 91.
For more than 10 years, she served as the director and curator of the Kinney Pioneer Museum in Mason City, a museum dedicated to preserving the history of North Central Iowa. During her tenure, the museum significantly increased its collections and exhibition space, and saw dramatic increases in attendance at special events including antique auto shows, ice cream socials, and historical reenactments.
Wilma was dedicated to community service, and served in a number of leadership positions including President of the Friends of the Mason City Library, membership chair of the Mason City Woman’s Club, and volunteer with the Mason City Red Cross. She was active in the League of Women Voters, and she was a state delegate of the Iowa Republican Party. She served as a notary public, and frequently assisted with absentee voting efforts. She served in all of the Board of Director positions, including Chairwoman, of the North Iowa regional chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers Auxiliary, and was the chapter delegate to several of their national conventions. She also served on the Board of Directors for Public Health Nursing in Cerro Gordo County (IA).
In July of 2003, Wilma and Jim moved to the Kansas City metropolitan area to be closer to their youngest son, Dr. Tomas Lindor Griebling, Assistant Professor and Vice-Chair of Urology and Faculty Associate in the Center on Aging at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
She enjoyed keeping in touch with her numerous long-time friends in Mason City, and getting to know many new friends and neighbors in the Kansas City area.
She loved music and the fine arts, and encouraged her children to pursue their artistic talents. When she was growing up, Wilma played bass saxophone in an all-girl, all-saxophone dance banc that performed throughout the North Iowa area. As a young woman, she was involved in the early development of Mason City Little Theatre (now Mason City Community Theatre). She was a very strong parent-student advocate and often volunteered in activities with the Mason City schools.
An avid gardener, she took great pride in the flower gardens surrounding her homes in both Mason City and Kansas City. Her other favorite pastimes included reading biographies, traveling with her family, and attending theater and music events. She was extremely proud of her Norwegian heritage, and incorporated Scandinavian traditions in family holiday gatherings and her daily life.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, four brothers, three sisters, and her cousin Martha Steensland of Lawler, IA.
She is survived by her husband, James William Griebling of Kansas City, MO; her son James Tomas Griebling and his wife Phyllis of Pequot Lakes, MN and La Feria, TX; her daughter Jana Louise Griebling Root and her husband Dennis of Mason City, IA; her son Tomas Lindor Griebling, MD, of Shawnee, KS; five grandchildren: Christopher Griebling of Hastings, MN; William (Bill) Griebling of Red Wing, MN; Sarah Guilgot of Hastings, MN; Matthew Root of Huntington Beach, CA; and Dagne Root of Edwards, CO; six great-grandchildren; a nephew, Claire Mellang and his wife Helen of Bloomington, MN; a cousin, Anna Webster and her husband Bob of Lawler, IA, and several other cousins.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at 3:00 pm at Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th Street, Kansas City, MO. Plans for a subsequent memorial service in Mason City, IA are currently pending. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Wilma’s honor to the Kansas City Good Samaritan Project, 3030 Walnut, Kansas City, MO, 64108, or the Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second Street SE, Mason City, IA, 50401. The Amos Family Funeral Home, 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS is in charge of arrangements (913) 631-5566.

LAURITA I. SANDERS

Laurita I. Sanders, 81, Overland Park, KS passed away Wed. March 8, 2005, at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Mass of Resurrection will be 10:00 AM, Friday Mar 11, 2005, at the Queen of the Holy Rosary with burial at Resurrection Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM, Thursday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee with a Rosary at 7:30PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation, Gyn/Oncology Fund, 800 West 47th St. Suite 204, Kansas City, MO 64112.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Hays, KS. She was a member of the Queen of the Holy Rosary, and St. Mary’s Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer J. Sanders.

Survivors include a son, David L. and his wife Gloria Sanders of Marietta, GA; a daughter, Linda S. and her husband John M. McMillen of Bellevue, WA; a sister, Lucille Ruder of Overland Park, KS and three grandchildren, John P. McMillen, Jennifer C. McMillen and Kristen R. Sanders. BENNY V. GREEN

Benny Green, 84, of Shawnee, KS passed away March 25th, 2005 at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Services will be held Tuesday March 29th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Friends may call Monday March 28th from 7-8:00 p.m. at the chapel. The family suggests donation to Kansas City Hospice.
Benny was born November 15th, 1920 in Oklahoma City. He served in the Army Air Corps in the Asiatic Theatre during World War II earning two Bronze Stars and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He married Nadine Klempnauer July 17th, 1949. Benny continued working at Green’s Florist in Kansas City, KS until his retirement in 1987. Benny is survived by his wife Nadine; his sons Ken Green (Cyndi) of Shawnee, Gary Green (Sue) of Holden, MO, Steve Green (Carol) of Merriam, and Fred Green (Cheri) of Kansas City, MO.
