LOLA M. BEHRENS

Lola Mae Lewis Behrens was born March 13, 1914 and passed away September 15, 2007 at the age of 93. Lola lived in Lakeview Village since August 11, 1975. She was born in Waverly, KS, in Coffey Co. and made her home in the Kansas City area since 1946. Before living in Kansas City, Lola and her husband, Herman F. Behrens, lived in Richmond, MO and Liberty, MO. They left Waverly, KS in 1939. Lola was a former member of the London Heights Baptist Church in Wyandotte Co., Kansas. She was also a Sunday school teacher. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Lenexa, KS for many years. Her husband preceded her in death on September 20, 1988. Herman was a technical editor. He wrote manuals for TWA Trans World Airlines for 30 years. Lola leaves one niece and four nephews and a host of friends and other distant relatives. Services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Visitation will be from 10 – 10:30 with graveside services at 12:30 p.m. at the Waverly Cemetery. DOROTHY S. BLAKE

Dorothy S. Blake, 84, Olathe, Ks passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Visitation will be held 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, October 13, 2007, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Animal Haven.

Dorothy was born in Lexington, KY. She was the 1940-41 runner-up for the Miss America Contest and was the 1940-41 Miss Kentucky.

Dorothy was preceded in death by a son, Robert M. Blake. Survivors include a son, Michael and his wife Rebecca Blake of Overland Park; six grandchildren, Heather Myer, Michelle Kleiber, Cameon Blake, Joshua Blake, Lisa Szostak, and Christopher Shofner.

ALTHEA RIEL

Althea Riel, 86, Overland Park, KS passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2007, at Kansas City, MO. Private graveside services will be at the National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS.

Mrs. Riel was born in New Jersey. She was a grade school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Riel. Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Riel of Mission, KS and Steven Riel of Minneapolis, MN and 3 grandchildren.

TERESA A. FORTUNE

Teresa A. Fortune, 53, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at home. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Friday, October 12, 2007 at the chapel. 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, KS.

Teresa was preceded in death by her father James (Jim) Tierney and an infant son Jacob Lee Releford. She is survived by her mother, Elsie (Loder) Tierney, husband Cliff of the home; three daughters, Kirsten Releford (Brent) Borden, Kansas City, Mo, Maggie Releford, Overland Park, KS, Amy (Mark) Hudson, Kansas City, MO, and a son Andrew (Sara) Releford, Prairie Village, KS; siblings and their spouses Janet (Kim) Wisner, Lenexa, KS, Shelly Charpentier, Overland Park, KS,

Mike (Kristen) Tierney, Kuwait, Tim (Synthia) Tierney Houston, TX, and Dan (Nancy) Tierney, Overland Park, KS, Loving Nana to Caleb Borden and Luke Releford, loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews, and love to her St. Luke’s family. Clyde E. (Dink) Fry, D.C.

Dr.Clyde E. (Dink) Fry, 74, of Shawnee, went home to be with his lord and savior Jesus Christ on September 19th after a sudden heart attack. Dink was born in Kansas City, Missouri and lived all of his life in the greater Kansas City area. He graduated from Central High School in 1952 where he played football and basketball. Clyde received his Dr. of Chiropractic degree from the Cleveland Chiropractic College in 1955. He went into private practice and turned down many offers to play professional baseball including one from the St. Louis Cardinals. Dink continued to play baseball until he was 39 and then started coaching.

Dink was a member of the Grace Christian Fellowship Church where he was an Ambassador, Usher and Greeter. He also was a member of the Young at Heart group, the Kansas Chiropractic Assoc. and worked with Fishers of Men.

He is survived by his wife, of 53 years, Florence E. Baehr Fry, a daughter, Lou Ann and husband Dr. Mark Balderston, and a granddaughter Christi and husband Danny Bartlett (We are sad that you are gone but rejoice that you are with Jesus, and we find peace in knowing we will meet with you again).

Services will be 3pm, Saturday, September 22nd at the Grace Christian Fellowship Church, 7230 Quivira Road, Shawnee. The visitation will be before the service from 2 to 3pm, Cremation.

Dorothy Marie Hartung

Dorothy Marie Hartung, 86, of Lakeview Village Retirement Community in Lenexa died Monday, October 8, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center after a brief illness. Dorothy was born Sept. 18, 1921 in Montrose, MO, to Aloysius and Victoria Arens and grew up in Glasgow, MO. She spent most of her life in Shawnee, KS, where she settled with Walter Henry Hartung after they married in 1940. They raised five children there and were active members of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Dorothy will be remembered for so many things. She was devoted to her family, and watched with joy as it grew to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was strong in her Catholic faith. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with family and friends, and to Germany and Austria in the 1980s. She loved a good polka or a game of canasta. She brought pleasure to many through her talent with sewing and crafts and was a memorable cook, handing down cherished recipes for her award-winning brisket and banana bread, among others. She kept scrapbooks for each family member and devoted a great deal of time to researching the family tree. She also had a ``ministry' of letter writing, keeping up a steady flow of letters to family and friends over decades. Her absence will be keenly felt by many. Dorothy was preceded in death by Walter, her husband of 60 years. She is survived by her children: son, Darryl Hartung and his wife, Ruth, of Marshall, MO; son, Dale Hartung and his wife, Deedra, Ballwin, MO; daughter, Sharon Anderson and her husband, Don, Newark, IL; daughter, Janis Pilcher, Bluffton, S.C.; daughter, Marsha Golladay and her husband, Charles, Lenexa. Grandchildren: Anne Hartung Spenner and her husband, Dan, Overland Park; John Hartung and his wife, Padget, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; James Hartung and his wife, Lisa, Irvine, CA; Nathan Hartung and his wife, Erin, St. Louis, MO; Jennifer Hartung, Kansas City, MO; David Hartung, Washington, D.C.; Daken Engmann and his wife, Nora, London, UK; Matthew Engmann and his wife, Corey, St. Louis, MO; Sean Drane, Plano, IL; Kelly Synek and her husband, Tim, Leawood, KS; Kevin Drane and his wife, Shanin, Oswego, IL; Mary Struve and her husband, Jerry, Aurora, IL; Rhonda and Doug Matlock, Yorkville, IL; Scott and Brooke Anderson, Davie, FL; Mitzi and Rich Gretenchord, Norway, IL; Paula Pilcher, Portland, OR; Laura Pilcher, N. Charleston, SC; Alyson, Caelin, Danielle, and Brooke Golladay, Lenexa, KS. She also had 22 great-grandchildren. Dorothy's sister: Esther Nolke of Glasgow, MO. The wake will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS, with a rosary at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 11311 Johnson Dr. Burial will be at Resurrection cemetery at 83rd St. and Quivira in Lenexa, and lunch will follow at the Parish Center at St. Joseph's. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Sisters Servants of Mary or Catholic Social Service Hospice.

Genevieve M. "Jennie" Cheatham

CHEATHAM - Genevieve M. "Jennie" Cheatham, 81, of Shawnee, Kan., our loving mother, wife, grandmother and great grandmother, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, September 19, 2007. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, with burial in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, at the Chapel. Jennie was born in Kansas City, Mo. and lived in Shawnee, Kan. most of her life. She was employed by Macy's Department Store for 25 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shawnee and a graduate of the Menninger Bible Course. She was also an avid volunteer for many church activities including vacation bible school and St. Mary's food kitchen. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, N. Flem Cheatham, Sr.; two sons, N. Flem Jr. and his wife, Vesta Cheatham, Bill and his wife, Karen Cheatham; a daughter, Brenda and her husband, Gregg Amos; seven grandchildren, Aaron Cheatham, Randy Cheatham, Chris Cheatham, Ashley Harms, Megan Amos, Melissa Amos and Parker Amos; and four great grandchildren. Lillian K. Keating 87, formerly of Shawnee, KS passed away Monday, October 8, 2007, at Mission Springs Assisted Living.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 12, 2007, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Friday at the Church. Lillian is survived by 4 cousins, Mary Kay (Jim) Tompsett of Fremont, NE, Bob (Glenna) Curtin of Osawatomie, KS, Dorathy Lazio of Omaha, NE and Bette Curtin of Kansas City, KS. Also surviving are many nephews, nieces, and friends.

Jeanne L. VanHercke

Jeanne L. VanHercke, 84, Shawnee, KS passed away Friday, September 21, 2007 at Shawnee Gardens Nursing Center, Shawnee, KS. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Monday, Sept. 24 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church; burial in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-7 PM, Sunday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, where a rosary recitation will be at 5:00 PM. Jeanne was born Feb. 14, 1923 in Kansas City, MO to Camiel and Mary (VanOost) Braet. In 1958, Jeanne began working part-time at the Shawnee State Bank. After 29 years she retired in 1988 as vice president. Jeanne was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was active in St. Margaret’s Circle, Keenagers and the Altar Society at the church. She was also a past member of the Belgium-American Club.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters. Survivors include her husband, Edward VanHercke, of the home; son Gary VanHercke and his wife, Angie, Lenexa, KS; daughter, Jan Soetaert and her husband, Rick, Shawnee, KS; sister, Eva VanNieuwenhuyse, Merriam, KS; five grandchildren, Denise, Kristin, Jennifer, Matt and Gina; five great grandchildren, Jacob, Matthew, Riley, Nick and Luke; and many nieces and nephews. Dorothy M. Harnett, 89, Olathe, Ks passed away Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007. Services will be 10;00 A.M., Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee with burial at Mt. Calvary cemetery in Kansas City, KS. Visitation Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M.

Mrs. Harnett was born in Kansas City, MO. She was a plant manager for Wee Winnie Wearables. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Genevieve Jester. Survivors include her husband, Maurice Harnett of Olathe, KS; a son, Fred Hand of Shawnee, KS; 5 grandchildren, Harold Edward Jester, William Earl Jester, Jordon Hillary Hand, Gunnar Hauser Hand and Hayden Benjamin Hand; 5 great grandchildren.

MERLE LEROY KUEKER

Merle LeRoy Kueker, 84, Merriam, KS passed away Sunday, September 23, 2007 at Delmar Gardens of Overland Park. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Trinity Lutheran Church; interment in the Resurrection cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call from 1-2:00 PM, Wednesday at the church. Merle was born Oct. 8, 1922 in Sweet Springs, MO to Louis and Martha (Kurtz) Kueker. He was a veteran of the US Navy and the battle of Le Tai Gulf.
On June 29, 1947 in a double weding, Merle married Betty L. Meyer and Betty’s brother Virgil married Merle,s cousin, Alleen in Sweet Springs, MO. Merle was employed with Southwestern Bell for 35 years, retiring as an engineer in 1984 and was a member of the Telephone Co. Pioneers. Merle and Betty were past members of Zion Lutheran Church for 47 years and currently are active members of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, woodworking and gardening. Merle was preceded in death by his parents, cousin and brother-in-law. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty of the home; two sons, Terry Kueker and his wife, Lori, Overland Park, KS and Gregory Kueker and his wife, Lynn, Kansas City, MO; granddaughter Ashley Kittle and her husband, Dan, Jamaica; niece Carol Dana and nephew, John Meyer.

WILLIAM BYRD “BILL” PARKS

William Byrd “Bill” Parks, was welcomed to Heaven, October 10, 2007. God called him home. What jubilation for Bill! What a “temporary” loss for us!

Bill was born October 12, 1926 in Adair County, Stilwell, OK. He was joined in Holy matrimony to Wilma Dean Williams on January 28, 1947 in Tahlequah, OK in Cherokee County. We love and honor the strong Cherokee lineage Bill has brought to our family. Bill is waiting in Heaven to welcome his wife, Wilma Dean; his daughter, Betty Nevins and husband Kenneth; daughter, Brenda Smith and husband, Jesse; his sister, Carolyn Jamison; grandchildren, Cammie Emberlin and husband, John; Brad Thomas, Brandon Harris, Shelly Miera and husband, Carlos; five great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. His son, William Dean “Billy” preceded him in death at the age of 19 on August 23, 1981.

Bill was a member of the First Assembly of God of Overland Park. Bill had been owner and co-owner of Jayhawk Window Cleaning for over 50 years. The Parks family thanks all the staff at SMMC for helping Bill and the compassion and prayers for his family.

Services will be 10 a.m., Monday at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 – 7 p.m., Sunday at the chapel.

CAROLE KRISTIN JONES

C. Kristin Jones, 63, Shawnee, KS passed away Saturday, September 22, 2007 at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Wednesday, Sept. 26 at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee; burial in Pleasant View Cemetery. Friends may call from 12-1:00 PM, at the chapel.

Kris was born Jan. 4, 1944 in St. Joseph, MO to Kenneth and Louise E. (Boomer) Van De Veer. She earned her BA degree in Business Administration at Emporia State University. After working at Hallmark, Kris worked at Business Mens Assurance for 25 years, retiring in 1994. She is survived by her husband, Al Jones of the home; step-daughter, Kim McCarty, Plattsburg, MO; step-son, Scott C. Jones, Prior Lake, MN; two brothers, Kenneth L. Van De Veer, Jr., The Villages, FL and Willard A. Van De Veer, Overland Park, KS; and two grandchildren, Tyler and Emma Jean Jones.

RAYMOND D. BIRDSALL

Raymond D. Birdsall, 74, of Shawnee, KS, passed away, Friday, October 12, 2007 at his home. Memorial services will be 6 p.m., Thursday, October 18, at the Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Birdsall was born in Kansas City, KS. He was an electrical engineer prior to his retirement. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Birdsall of Houston, TX; his children, Raymond D. Birdsall, III, Diana Cook and Jennifer Birdsall; step-children, Roman Foss and Stephanie Alexander; a sister, Beverly Lamb, Shawnee, KS and six grandchildren.

Spc. Lucas Allen Frantz

Memorial services for Spc. Lucas Allen Frantz, 22, Tonganoxie, KS, will be at noon Thursday, Oct. 27, 2005, at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Park in Tonganoxie. Burial will be in Maple Grove cemetery in Tonganoxie. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005 at the Quisenberry Funeral Home, 4th and Delaware, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Frantz died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, in Mosul, Iraq, while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

He was born Oct. 18, 1983, in Topeka.

He graduated in 2002 from Tonganoxie High School. He was a U.S. Army vehicle commander assigned to the First Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team. Before being deployed to Iraq, he was based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9271 in Tonganoxie.

He married Kelly Lee Qualls on July 16, 2003, in Leavenworth. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include his parents, Tim and Lorrie VanDruff, Rossville; a brother, Matt, Rossville; a sister, Staci VanDruff, Rossville; his grandparents, Karen Hildebrandt, Rossville, and Larry and Helen VanDruff, Tonganoxie.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Lucas Frantz Fund for a memorial to honor him.
