Michael Murray Wilson

Overland Park - Memorial services for Michael Murray Wilson, 58, Overland Park, will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church, 7023 W. 71st St. in Overland Park. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the church. Inurnment will be in De Soto cemetery at a later date.

Mr. Wilson died May 12, 2008, after a long battle with diabetes.

He was preceded in death by his father Murray F. Wilson and a grandson, Brett Michael Ross. He is survived by his wife of nearly 34 years, Janet Wilson of the home; his mother Phyllis Wilson, Shawnee, step mother Janet Wilson, Phoenix, Ariz.,; sister Cindi Nitschke, Stanley, step brother Peter Hansen, San Francisco, Calif.,; two daughters Susan Ross and husband, Ben, Linwood, and Pam Bull and her, husband, Ed, Des Moines, Iowa; and two grandchildren.

The family suggest contributions to the National Kidney Foundation of Kansas and Western Missouri, 6405 Metcalf Ave,, Suite 204, Overland Park, KS, 66202.

Cedar Crest Memorial Chapel of De Soto was in charge of arrangements.

Dolora "Dee" Ann Wilson

Funeral service for Dolora “Dee” Ann Wilson, 58, Lawrence will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at 9th Street Baptist Church. Private Burial will take place at the Grant Township cemetery in Marion, Kansas.

She was born on Novmeber 3, 1952 in Great Bend, Kansas the daughter of Robert E. and Pauline B. (Kohlman) Pester.

She was an Assistant Property Manager for ARC. She also worked for the University of Kansas at the Watkins Hospital in Medical Records.

She married Robert Lee Wilson, Sr. on June 7, 1980 in Lawrence. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include her mother, of Warrensburg, Missouri; three daughters, Shoheen Bolin, Port Arthur, Texas, Reiko Bolin, Rosebud, Texas, Memarie Pester, Lawrence, KS; two sons, Donald Bolin, Austin, Texas, Robert Lee Wilson, Jr. “Bobby”, and wife, Angela, Lawrence, Kansas; one brother, L. Eugene Pester and wife, Wendy, Stafford Virginia; one sister, Kathlyn K. Sauer, Warrensburg, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Ayanna, Ashley, Lexis, Orandae, Torri, D.J., Gavin, and one on the way. She was preceded in death by her father and granddaughter, Jayla.

The family will greet friends 5-7 p.m. Monday, December 27, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to 9th Street Baptist Church or Lawrence Memorial Hospital- Palliative Care and may be sent in care of the Mortuary.

William "Bill" Goodwin

A Private Memorial Mass for William J. Goodwin, 88, Lawrence, KS was held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. He died Friday, December 24, 2010 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar in Lawrence.

He was born June 23, 1922 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Edward L. and Jessie Baker Goodwin.

Mr. Goodwin served his country in the US Navy during World War II.

He worked as a telephone repairman for New York Bell Telephone Company for 38 years. He retired in 1984. He was a former member of the Communication Workers of America.

He married Ann Kowalinski in Maspath, New York on May 4, 1947. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2002.

Survivors include two sons; Robert L. Goodwin and Martin W. Goodwin, both of Lawrence and one grandson.

Avon Dean Roberts

Funeral services for Avon Dean Roberts, 79, Lawrence will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery. She died December 27, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence.

Avon was born December 16, 1931 in Bagnell, MO the daughter of Delbert W. and Bertie P. (Jeffries) Garrison.

She worked as a keyboard operator at the University of Kansas until she retired in 1996. She was an active member of Sweet Adelines.

Avon married Clarence H. Roberts on June 18, 1949 in Pittsburg, KS. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2001.

Survivors include; two sons, Michael and wife, Barbara, Lewisville, Texas, Larry, Lawrence; one daughter-in-law, Vickie Patzel, Wichita, KS; one brothers, James W., Girard, KS; one sister, Sandra K. Bugni, and husband, Joe, Overland Park, KS; one sister-in-law, Betty Garrison, Frontenac, KS and nine grandchildren, Monica Dibben, Karen Roberts, Jeff Roberts, Melissa Tinker, Laura Johnston, Karmyn Larsen, Chris Hood, Nichole Winmill, Jon Roberts; and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son Jerry in September of 1986 and her brother, Robert. W.

The family will greet friends from 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 until service time at the mortuary in Lawrence.

Memorials may be made in her name to Kansas Cancer Institute and may be sent in care of the mortuary.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Hatton, Dr. Stein and the Fourth Floor Nursing Team at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Doris Jean Kitchen

Memorial services for Doris “Jean” Kitchen, 80, Lawrence, will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community, 4851 Harvard Drive, in Lawrence, KS. She died December 27, 2010 at Pioneer Ridge surrounded by her family.

She was born May 29, 1930 in Smith Center, KS the daughter of Ralph Warren and Mamie (Wurster) Barry.

Jean attended Logan Elementary School in Smith Center, KS. She was valedictorian of Smith County in 1944. She then graduated from Hays High in 1948. In 1950 she received her teaching certificate.

She married Bill Kitchen on September 1, 1951 at the First Presbyterian Church in Smith Center, KS.

Jean taught grade school in Brewster and Erie, Kansas. She was a beloved piano teacher and taught numerous students in Hutchinson, KS from 1965-1978, and then in Manhattan, Kansas from 1979-2002. She was a disciplined pianist and was on a continuous quest for self-improvement. She was an avid journal writer, as well as the author of a series of children’s stories about her youth in Smith Center. These can be accessed at jeankitchen.blogspot.com. She also devoted herself to quilting, crossword puzzles, art, gardening, and being a wonderful mother to her five children.

Jean was a member of the League of Women Voters, Environmental Action of Reno County, the Democratic Party, and was a cornerstone of the Unitarian Universalist Church in Hutchinson.

Survivors include her husband, Bill of Lawrence; her five children, Colleen Dick of Corvallis, OR; Kirk Kitchen of Ypsilanti, MI; Todd Kitchen of Lawrence, KS; Jocelyn Kitchen of Lawrence, KS; Sara Kitchen of Austin, Texas; one sister, Mary Louise Stepp of Smith Center, KS; eight grandchildren, Jean Dick, Connor Dick, Eamon Dick, and Ellie Dick of Corvallis, OR; Mulligan Greenwell, Ida Greenwell, Keegan Matheis and Eleanor Matheis of Lawrence, KS, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial donations to the Konza Prairie Foundation and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Grace M. Hassett

Graveside inurnment for Grace M. Hassett, 85, Lawrence, KS is pending. She died on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born on January 12, 1925 in Tulsa, OK, the daughter of John Curtis and Ruth Luella (Dugan) Buchanan.

Mrs. Hassett was a cook and waitress at Homer’s Drive In in Leavenworth, KS from 1948 to 1962.

She married Thomas L. Hassett on May 12, 1956 in Easton, KS. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1997.

Survivors include son, Earl C. Neal and wife, Caroline; granddaughter, Tracy Spangler; grandson, Michael Neal; eight great grand kids and two great-great grand kids.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Leavenworth and sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Lorraine E. Hammer

Memorial services for Lorraine E. Hammer, 86, Lawrence, KS, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church (2104 Bob Billings Parkway) in Lawrence, KS. Private inurnment will be held at a later date in Memorial Park cemetery in Lawrence. She died on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born on September 10, 1924 in Rydal, KS, the daughter of Archie B. and Ida E. Cartmel Carpenter. She moved to Lawrence from Claflin, KS in 1945.

Mrs. Hammer was a 1948 graduate of the Kansas University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

She retired after 31 years of service in the Physiology and Cell Biology Department of the University of Kansas. She was a certified member of the Electron Microscopy Society.

Since 1946, Mrs. Hammer was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and was a member of the Lutheran Women’s League of the church. She was also a member of the KU Alumni Association, the Gold Medal Club, the KU Retirees Club, Honorary Mortar Board Alumni and the Advisory Board of the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She was a 42 year member of the Cosmopolitan Pals, and a member of IK Chapter of the PEO Sisterhood.

She was married to Lucian B. “Lou” Hammer on February 7, 1947 in Claflin, KS. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons; Robert (wife, Malinda) Hammer, of Thousand Oaks, CA, Gary (wife Julie) Hammer, of Lawrence, KS, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Lou Gilpin.

The family suggests memorials in her name to the Immanuel Lutheran Church and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

Mary Ann Puckett

The funeral service for Mary Ann Puckett, 73, Lawrence, KS, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. She died November 15, 2010 at her home.

She was born on July 5, 1937 in Covington, Oklahoma, the daughter of James Wetzel and Naomi Bannon.

Mary Ann was an air traffic controller for the U.S. Air Force, while she served in the military. She formerly owned a small monogramming and embroidery business in Denver, Colorado. She also worked as an office administrator for Boeing in Wichita.

She married Norman Puckett on February 14, 1985 in Wichita, Kansas. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include one step-daughter, Christina Neavitt and husband, Jeff, Lecompton, Kansas; one son, Tony Wetzel and wife, Betty, Lake Tapps, Washington, one step-son Norman Dean Puckett and companion, Karin, Oak Grove, Missouri; three sisters, Shirley Herpolsheimer and husband, Richard, Mesa Arizona, Judy Gross, Loveland, Colorado and Lorraine Fugate and husband, Gary, St. Charles, Missouri and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, John Thomas Beasley on June 7, 2004.
