Donald Gene Brown

Donald Gene Brown, 72, of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, June 11, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home. Don was born Nov. 1, 1934, to Emery W. Brown and Genevieve P. (Ireland) Brown in Winfield, Kan. He attended Winfield Schools, and on Dec. 23, 1989, he married Rogelia T. "Lily" Brown in the Philippines. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Don was a certified welder for Smith-Moon Steel Co. in Winfield and John Morrell Meat Packing in Arkansas City. He later became a flight instructor and managed the Skiatook, Okla., airport. He loved flying and was involved in commercial aviation for 40 years, 35 of those were in agricultural aviation. He owned and operated Brown Aerial Spray at Strother Field and sprayed in eight different states. Don is survived by his wife, Lily Brown, of the home; son, Greg Brown and wife, Brenna, of Denver, Colo.; daughters, Gwen Brown, of Tulsa, Okla., Cathy Brown, of Bentonville, Ark., and Valerie Brown, of Wichita; brother, Richard Brown and wife, Terry, of Grand Prairie, Texas; sister, Marcella Joy, of Wichita; two grandchildren, Michelle Glover and Nicholas Roarke; and several nieces, nephews, and great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Allene Alma Lewman

Funeral services for Allene Alma Lewman, 89, of Arkansas City, who died Saturday, June 2, 2007, were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. The Rev. Steve Chambers of the Central Christian Church of Arkansas City officiated. Interment was in Newkirk Cemetery, Newkirk, Okla.
Beulah M. Stephens

Beulah M. Stephens, 91, of Mountain Home, Ark., formerly of Winfield, Kan., died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Hospice House in Mountain Home. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. at Miles Funeral Home in Winfield on Sunday, June 10, 2007, with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 11, 2007, at Wilmot Cemetery. Born Aug. 15, 1915, in New Salem, Kan., Beulah was the daughter of Irvin and Ora (Stewart) Orand. She married Murl S. Lewis, of Winfield, on Nov. 27, 1935. In 1981, she married Lloyd Stephens, of Hot Springs, Ark. She retired from Benny & Smith Crayola Factory in 1980. Beulah is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Kay Wells, of Mountain Home; daughter-in-law, Marcia Lewis, of Winfield; step-son, Mike Stephens, of Pennsylvania; step-daughter, Mary Light, of Ariz.; grandchildren, Dee Dee Turner, of Mountain Home; Cathy Mora, of Arkansas City; Brenda Ferguson, Steven Lewis, Wanda McCullough, Tom Lewis and Mark Lewis, all of Winfield; brother, Don Orand, of Wichita; sisters, Ogureta Horrocks, of Winfield, Marjorie Fox, of Burden, Patricia Payne, of Ponca City; 12 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; six great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to both husbands, she is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jerald Lee Lewis; and two brothers, John and Jim Orand.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of the Ozarks in care of Twin Lakes Community Foundation at (it's either 33 or 55 -- check and see) Riviera Court, Mountain Home, Ark., 72653. Miles Funeral Service of Winfield was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth A. Henry

Ruth A. Henry, 90, of Lindsborg, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007. She was a retired bookkeeper and homemaker. Born Ruth Arlene Sauer on Nov. 7, 1916, in Salina, Kan., she was the daughter of Arthur P. and Leona Oti (Linkletter) Sauer. On June 13, 1936, she married Leonard Henry at Junction City, Kan. He died on Dec. 2, 1962. Survivors include a son, Michael D. Henry, of Lindsborg; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007, at the Trinity United Methodist Church, Lindsborg. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Bethany Home. Christians Funeral Home, 103 N. Washington, P.O. Box 386, Lindsborg, Kan., 67456, is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles Eugene "Gene" Bell

Charles Eugene "Gene" Bell, 78, of Sedan, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, in Copan, Okla. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 11, 2007, at the Cedar Vale Cemetery in Cedar Vale, Kan., with Father Jerome Spexarth of the Holy Name Catholic Church of Coffeyville officiating. The casket will be closed, but friends may sign the register book from 12-5 p.m., Sunday, June 10, 2007 at the funeral home in Sedan. He was born Sept. 17, 1928, in Burden, Kan., to James Albert and Irene (Majors) Bell. He was a farmer and also worked at the Rodeo Packing Plant in Arkansas City for many years. He married Julie Villegas on July 5, 1986, in Harlingen, Texas. She preceded him in death March 17, 2004. Survivors include a son, Paul Bell, of Texas; two brothers, Jerry Bell, of Wichita, and James Bell, of Minot, S.D.; two sisters, Florence Beall and Joyce Crow, of Arkansas City; one grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Julia; and one sister.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Caney and may be left with the funeral home. The David W. Barnes Funeral Home of Sedan is in charge of arrangements.

William Dean "Bill" McKnight Sr.

William Dean "Bill" McKnight Sr., 65, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at his residence. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, at the Riverview Cemetery. Pastor Gale Rider and Larry Riggs will officiate. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6-8 p.m. Bill was born March 21, 1942, in Arkansas City to Clifford LeRoy and Wanda Netta (Griffin) McKnight. He was reared and educated in Arkansas City, attending local schools. He served in the United States Navy on board the USS St. Paul and the USS Taussig during Vietnam. Bill married Jean Skeggs on April 7, 1983, in Wellington. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Bill worked as a jet engine mechanic for over 25 years at the General Electric Jet Engine Facility at Strother Field. He had attended the Mount Zion Community Church and was a member of the USS St. Paul Association. Survivors include his wife, Jean, of the home; three sons, Joe Puffinbarger, J.D. McKnight, Billy McKnight Jr. and his wife, Christina, all of Arkansas City; three daughters, Virginia Riggs of Arkansas City, Christina and her husband, Scott Digman, of Freedom, Okla., Susan McKnight of the home; one brother, Chet McKnight, of Arkansas City; two sisters, Mary Mackey of Ponca City, Okla., Netta Hershler of Villiages, Fla.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Clifton LeRoy; and sisters, Mildred Larky, Vivian Bilyeu, and Mabel Lambert.
A memorial has been established with Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Charles Frederick Tanner, C.P.A.

Charles Frederick Tanner, C.P.A., 77, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, June 7, 2007, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, June 9, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City. The Reverend Charles Grant will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Charles was born Oct. 4, 1929, to Frederick Leland Tanner and Drudie (Dabies) Tanner in Skeedee, Okla. He attended Newkirk schools and graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1947. He continued his education at Arkansas City Junior College, graduating in 1949 and from Emporia State University in 1951. On April 15, 1949, he married Betty L. Amos in Arkansas City and the couple made their home in Emporia while Charles finished school. They then moved to Lawrence a brief time before settling in Arkansas City in the early 50s. Charles was a certified public accountant and partner of Parman, Tanner, Soule and Jackson CPA's. He served on the Civil Defense over 55 years and was the director for 25 years. Charles was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Chamber of Commerce and other area organizations. He is survived by his wife, Betty Tanner of the home; two sons, Michael Tanner and his wife, Christine, of Arkansas City and Bruce Tanner and his wife, Debra, of Olathe; a sister, Helen Chitwood and her husband, Bill, of Sulphur, Okla.; grandchildren, Brian Tanner and wife, Joyce, of Tulsa, Okla., Erika Hansen and husband, Troy, of Irene, S.D., Audra Tanner of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jeff Tanner of Vermillion, S.D., and Sarah Tanner of Olathe; and five great- grandchildren.
Memorials have been established with the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City is in charge of the arrangements.

Merle Dennis Dwyer Jr.

A graveside service for Merle Dennis Dwyer Jr., 64, of Newkirk, who died Saturday, June 2, 2007, was held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 6, 2007, with Chaplain (Major) Robert Pleczkowski of the U.S. Army, officiating. Interment was at Riverview Cemetery. Military honors were given by the U.S. Marine Corps out of Wichita, Kan. Honorary casketbearers were Bill McKnight Sr., and all of Merle's friends. Casketbearers were Donnie Williams Sr., Donnie Williams Jr., Richard Peat Sr., Richard Peat Jr., Joe Puffinbarger and Billy McKnight. Special music was the "Marine Hymn" rendered by Merrill Womach.

Hazel Claudine (Nugen) Chapman

Hazel Claudine (Nugen) Chapman, 85, passed away at home, surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 6, 2007. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2007, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery near Ashton. The family will receive their friends at the funeral home from 3-5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, June 10, 2007. This very special woman filled her family and friends' lives with love, kindness and compassion. Hazel was born on Jan. 16, 1922, near Medicine Lodge, Kan., to William Henry and Grace Leota (Edwards) Nugen. She was the third youngest born to a family of five boys, and at an early age became quite skilled in cooking, sewing, and dealing with their brotherly pranks. She became her brothers' object of affectionate teasing and loved them so. Hazel married Robert Edward Chapman on Dec. 31, 1943, in Newkirk, Okla. When Bob was called into the Army Air Corps for basic training, she went to work for Boeing Military while waiting for his return. In 1945 he was discharged and they moved to Ashton, Kan., where Bob operated a grain elevator and farmed wheat. Hazel maintained their home and assisted with her husband's two employment transfers between Kansas City and Wichita. They had two daughters. Barbara Ann was born on Nov. 14, 1946, and Judy Lea was born Dec. 8, 1952. Hazel became very involved with the girls' school activities, as room mother, PTA and the Girl Scouts. She was also involved with the Melbrook Christian Church which later became the University Christian Church and is currently the Woodridge Christian Church. After Bob retired they moved to Arkansas City to be closer to their farm. They were active members of the Central Christian Church. Bob died in 1997 and, due to Hazel's failing health, she moved back to Wichita and resided with her youngest daughter and son-in-law in 2002. Hazel enjoyed her last few years watching the hummingbirds and wild turkeys that came into her neighborhood court. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her two daughters, Barbara Ann Lisiecki and husband, Joe, of Wichita, and Judy Lea Brown and husband, Joe, of Wichita; three grandchildren, Tiffany Ann Harrell Hayes and husband, James, of Wichita, Krista Michelle Rapp and husband, Gary, of Wichita and Joe Michael Brown III and wife, Roxanna, of Leavenworth, Kan.; three great-grandchildren, Abbygail Leann Hayes, Michael Jameson Hayes and Marissa Whitney Rapp, all of Wichita; two sisters-in-law, Wilma Jean Nugen, of Wellington, Kan., and Betty Nugen, of Ft Worth, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials have been established for the Woodridge Christian Church of Wichita, Central Christian Church of Arkansas City or Home Healthcare Connection Hospice. Contributions may be made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, P.O. Box 756, Arkansas City, Kan., 67005.

Raymond E. Stalnaker

Raymond E. Stalnaker, 86, of rural Newkirk, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at his apartment at Presbyterian Manor. Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, at the Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Hope Cemetery. The Reverend Michael Roberts will officiate. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Friday Raymond was born Oct. 21, 1920, near Geuda Springs to A.O. and Iva (McCormick) Stalnaker. He was reared and educated on the family farm and attended Arkansas City High School, graduating in 1938. He later graduated from Arkansas City Junior College (Cowley College) in 1940. Raymond worked in Long Beach, Calif., during WWII, building "Liberty Ships." He returned to the family farm after the war and married Patricia Smith on Nov. 30, 1947, in Salina, Kan. The couple made their home northeast of Newkirk along the Kansas-Oklahoma border. Raymond farmed on both sides of the border until his retirement. He was a longtime member of the Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, George K. Stalnaker, of Corpus Christi, Texas and Kevin L. Stalnaker, of Marion, Iowa; one daughter, Sarah Jean "Sally" Armstrong, of Blackwell, Okla.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and five brothers and sisters.
Memorials have been established with Hospice of North Central Oklahoma or the Mount Hope United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

Christine Beth Whitford

Graveside services for Christine Beth Whitford, 33, who died Saturday, June 2, 2007, at her home in Ft. Worth, Texas, were held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Riverview Cemetery, Arkansas City. Musical selections were "Amazing Grace" by Faith Hill and "When I Get Where I'm Going," by Brad Paisley. Pastor Gale Rider of the Mt. Zion Community Church of Arkansas City, officiated. Interment was in Riverview Cemetery, Arkansas City.
Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City was in charge of arrangements.

John B. Nickle

John B. Nickle, 86, of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at his residence. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 9, 2007, at the First Baptist Church of Arkansas City. Burial will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Pastor Stephen Bailey will officiate. John was born Aug. 9, 1920, in Eureka Springs, Ark., to James J.S. and Ida Malinda (Vandorin) Nickle. He was reared and educated in Eureka and Arkansas City. John worked at Steffen's Dairy, prior to WWII, when he served in the United States Army. John married Idabelle C. Shawver on Nov. 16, 1939, in Newkirk, Okla. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. John worked as a roughneck, and a driller for New Era Mill, and then as a jet engine mechanic for General Electric Jet Engine Facility at Strother Field until his retirement. John was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints and the Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers. Survivors include three daughters, Donna Graham, of Arkansas City, Joyce Childs, of Wichita, and Patricia "Patti" Donnell, of Branson, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, William, Curt, and Earl; four sisters, Mary Donnell, Pressie Richardson, Iva Hunter-Denny, and Lula Matthews; and four infant brothers and sisters.
A memorial has been established with the Walnut Valley Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.

William Dean McKnight Sr.

William Dean McKnight Sr., 65, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at his residence. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Riverview Cemetery.
The family will greet friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Derrick Ray Collyar

Derrick Ray Collyar, 44, of Corpus Christi, Texas, formerly of Newkirk, died Saturday, June 2, 2007 at Memorial Regional Hospital, Corpus Christi. Cremation has been effected. Graveside service for his cremains will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, in the Newkirk Cemetery with Danny W. Cornish officiating. Miler-Stahl Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. The family will be at 301 S. Maple, Newkirk, on the afternoon of the service. Derrick Ray Collyar was born Feb. 20, 1963, in Blackwell, the son of Wayne Leroy and June Kay (Perkins) Collyar. He grew up in Newkirk and attended Newkirk schools until he was 16. He then attended Del Mar Vocational Technology School in Corpus Christi, receiving certification as an auto mechanic. He also was employed at the Chapman Ranch.
He is survived by three daughters, Kara Collyar, of Corpus Christi, Katherine Heinz, of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Kelli Collyar, of Abilene, Kan.; one brother, David Collyar, of Richland, Mo; one sister, Tammy Cline of Ponca City; and two grandchildren, David Juarez, of Corpus Christi and Meliyah Heinz of Honolulu. He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents. Honorary bearers will be his best friends while in Newkirk, Terry Horinek, Pat Kiser and Jim Golay.

Raymond Stalnaker

Raymond Stalnaker, 86, of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at the Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m., Saturday, June 9, 2007, at the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Hope Cemetery.

Hazel Chapman

Hazel Chapman, 85, of Wichita, died Wednesday, June 6, 2007, in Wichita. Arrangements are pending and under the direction of Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.

Orville Leonard Bair

Orville Leonard Bair, 79, of Burden, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, 2007, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in the Burden Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. today. The family will greet friends from 6-7:30 p.m. Born June 19, 1927, in Arkansas City, he was the son of Ola Everett and Anna Mae (Wilkerson) Bair. He operated Bair's LP Gas Service, farmed and raised livestock until retirement. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Marie (Goodrich) Bair of the home; son, Roger Bair, Burden; daughters, Linda Raftopoulos, Wichita, Rita Wasinger, Winfield, Melissa Fraley, Burden; brother, Homer Bair, Augusta; sisters, Eula Mae Martin, Dexter, Vivian Shaver, Douglass, and Wanda Mackey, Burden; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Lenora Henderson, Oleta Shields, Beatrice Waymire; and brother, Eugene Bair.
Memorials have been established for Harry Hynes Hospice of Cowley County and the First Baptist Church in Burden. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.

Drayton C. "Flip" Carter, III

Drayton C. "Flip" Carter, III, 42, St. Paul, Minn., died Wednesday, May 30, 2007. A visitation will be held at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home in Roseville, Minn., on Monday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Private interment will be held. He was born in Wellington, Kan. Survivors include his wife, Vanessa; children, Mitchell, Yvonne, August, Zacary, Demetrius, Ina, Rochell and Michael; brother, Chico Ansley; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Drayton Carter Jr. and Ada Jean (Morris) Carter.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements are under the direction of the Mueller-Bies Funeral Home, Roseville, Minn.
